  • How do I make a full screen scrolling messagebox or window?

    - by chobo2
    Hi First let me start of saying I know absolutely nothing about c++ and I am really just more interested in getting this to work then learning c++(I got enough on my plate to learn). So basically I am trying to make a terms of service for my windows mobile 6 professional application but it seems I need to use c++ to do it. After hours of searching I found a solution but it developed for windows mobile standard. So they somehow used c++ to make a message box and on standard devices(ie non touch screen phones) the message box can have like scrolling. For some reason this is not the case with professional devices(touch screen devices). So my message box goes off the page and you can never accept or decline the terms. So your stuck and on the screen forever till you do some sort of soft restart. http://www.mobilepractices.com/2008/10/setupdll-sample-and-walkthrough-terms.html The above link is the tutorial but here is the actual file that seems to display the message. #include "stdafx.h" #include "ce_setup.h" // This is a variable containing the text to be displayed // in the Terms & Conditions dialog TCHAR Message[] = _T("TERMS & CONDITIONS\r\n ") _T("Selecting YES you're accepting our terms & conditions.\r\n") _T("This is just a sample application.\r\n") _T("From http://www.mobilepractices.com\r\n") _T("You can replace this text with your own.\r\n") _T("We're using a setup.dll to show this dialog.\r\n") _T("Extra line to force vertical scrollbar.\r\n") _T("Extra line to force vertical scrollbar.\r\n") _T("Extra line to force vertical scrollbar.\r\n") _T("Extra line to force vertical scrollbar.\r\n") _T("Extra line to force vertical scrollbar.\r\n") _T("Extra line to force vertical scrollbar.\r\n") _T("Last line.\r\n") ; // This function will be called when the user // tries to install the cab. According to its return // value the installation continues or is cancelled. // As this could be called more than once // (i.e. if there is not enough space on the target) // we should take care about fFirstCall parameter // to show the dialog only once. codeINSTALL_INIT Install_Init( HWND hwndParent, BOOL fFirstCall, BOOL fPreviouslyInstalled, LPCTSTR pszInstallDir ) { if (!fFirstCall || ::MessageBoxW(0, Message, _T("SplashScreenSample") , MB_YESNO) == IDYES) return codeINSTALL_INIT_CONTINUE; else return codeINSTALL_INIT_CANCEL; } So I want to change this to something that can scroll. Can I use like a panel control since I know what has scroll or something else? Thanks

  • Guide.BeginShowMessageBox wrapper

    - by Daniel Moth
    While coding for Windows Phone 7 using Silverlight, I was really disappointed with the built-in MessageBox class, so I found an alternative. My disappointment was the fact that: Display of the messagebox causes the phone to vibrate (!) Display of the messagebox causes the phone to make an annoying sound. You can only have "ok" and "cancel" buttons (no other button captions). I was using the messagebox something like this: // Produces unwanted sound and vibration. // ...plus no customization of button captions. if (MessageBox.Show("my message", "my caption", MessageBoxButton.OKCancel) == MessageBoxResult.OK) { // Do something Debug.WriteLine("OK"); } …and wanted to make minimal changes throughout my code to change it to this: // no sound or vibration // ...plus bonus of customizing button captions if (MyMessageBox.Show("my message", "my caption", "ok, got it", "that sucks") == MyMessageBoxResult.Button1) { // Do something Debug.WriteLine("OK"); } It turns out there is a much more powerful class in the XNA framework that delivered on my requirements (and offers even more features that I didn't need like choice of sounds and not blocking the caller): Guide.BeginShowMessageBox. You can use it simply by adding an assembly reference to Microsoft.Xna.Framework.GamerServices. I wrote a little wrapper for my needs and you can find it here (ready to enhance with your needs): MyMessageBox.cs.txt. Comments about this post welcome at the original blog.

  • MyMessageBox for Phone and Store apps

    - by Daniel Moth
    I am sharing a class I use for both my Windows Phone 8 and Windows Store app projects. Background and my requirements For my Windows Phone 7 projects two years ago I wrote an improved custom MessageBox class that preserves the well-known MessageBox interface while offering several advantages. I documented those and shared it for Windows Phone 7 here: Guide.BeginShowMessageBox wrapper. Aside: With Windows Phone 8 we can now use the async/await feature out of the box without taking a dependency on additional/separate pre-release software. As I try to share code between my existing Windows Phone 8 projects and my new Windows Store app projects, I wanted to preserve the calling code, so I decided to wrap the WinRT MessageDialog class in a custom class to present the same MessageBox interface to my codebase. BUT. The MessageDialog class has to be called with the await keyword preceding it (which as we know is viral) which means all my calling code will also have to use await. Which in turn means that I have to change my MessageBox wrapper to present the same interface to the shared codebase and be callable with await… for both Windows Phone projects and Windows Store app projects. Solution The solution is what the requirements above outlined: a single code file with a MessageBox class that you can drop in your project, regardless of whether it targets Windows Phone 8, or Windows 8 Store apps or both. Just call any of its static Show functions using await and dependent on the overload check the return type to see which button the user chose.// example from http://www.danielmoth.com/Blog/GuideBeginShowMessageBox-Wrapper.aspx if (await MyMessageBox.Show("my message", "my caption", "ok, got it", "that sucks") == MyMessageBoxResult.Button1) { // Do something Debug.WriteLine("OK"); } The class can be downloaded from the bottom of my older blog post. • Old school trick that I forgot

    - by DavidMadden
    If you have to support some older Winforms you might like to remember this.  When opening a MessageBox to display that the user entered incorrect information, if you are doing so from a dialog, catch the DialogResult of the MessageBox and then set  this.DialogResult = DialogResult.None; to prevent the dialog from closing if you want the user to try again.  Otherwise, it will close the dialog box and return to the section of code that called it.Note:  You do not have to catch the DialogResult from the MessageBox.  You can still set this after the return from the call to the MessageBox.  Just make sure to do either but exiting the body of the dialog itself.

  • Checking timeouts made more readable

    - by Markus
    I have several situations where I need to control timeouts in a technical application. Either in a loop or as a simple check. Of course – handling this is really easy, but none of these is looking cute. To clarify, here is some C# (Pseudo) code: private DateTime girlWentIntoBathroom; girlWentIntoBathroom = DateTime.Now; do { // do something } while (girlWentIntoBathroom.AddSeconds(10) > DateTime.Now); or if (girlWentIntoBathroom.AddSeconds(10) > DateTime.Now) MessageBox.Show("Wait a little longer"); else MessageBox.Show("Knock louder"); Now I was inspired by something a saw in Ruby on StackOverflow: Now I’m wondering if this construct can be made more readable using extension methods. My goal is something that can be read like “If girlWentIntoBathroom is more than 10 seconds ago” 1st attempt if (girlWentIntoBathroom > (10).Seconds().Ago()) MessageBox.Show("Wait a little longer"); else MessageBox.Show("Knock louder"); So I wrote an extension for integer that converts the integer into a TimeSpan public static TimeSpan Seconds(this int amount) { return new TimeSpan(0, 0, amount); } After that, I wrote an extension for TimeSpan like this: public static DateTime Ago(this TimeSpan diff) { return DateTime.Now.Add(-diff); } This works fine so far, but has a great disadvantage. The logic is inverted! Since girlWentIntoBathroom is a timestamp in the past, the right side of the equation needs to count backwards: impossible. Just inverting the equation is no solution, because it will invert the read sentence as well. 2nd attempt So I tried something new: if (girlWentIntoBathroom.IsMoreThan(10).SecondsAgo()) MessageBox.Show("Knock louder"); else MessageBox.Show("Wait a little longer"); IsMoreThan() needs to transport the past timestamp as well as the span for the extension SecondsAgo(). It could be: public static DateWithIntegerSpan IsMoreThan(this DateTime baseTime, int span) { return new DateWithIntegerSpan() { Date = baseTime, Span = span }; } Where DateWithIntegerSpan is simply: public class DateWithIntegerSpan { public DateTime Date {get; set;} public int Span { get; set; } } And SecondsAgo() is public static bool SecondsAgo(this DateWithIntegerSpan dateAndSpan) { return dateAndSpan.Date.Add(new TimeSpan(0, 0, dateAndSpan.Span)) < DateTime.Now; } Using this approach, the English sentence matches the expected behavior. But the disadvantage is, that I need a helping class (DateWithIntegerSpan). Has anyone an idea to make checking timeouts look more cute and closer to a readable sentence? Am I a little too insane thinking about something minor like this?

  • How to differentiate between exceptions i can show the user, and ones i can't?

    - by Ian Boyd
    i have some business logic that traps some logically invalid situations, e.g. trying to reverse a transaction that was already reversed. In this case the correct action is to inform the user: Transaction already reversed or Cannot reverse a reversing transaction or You do not have permission to reverse transactions or This transaction is on a session that has already been closed or This transaction is too old to be reversed The question is, how do i communicate these exceptional cases back to the calling code, so they can show the user? Do i create a separate exception for each case: catch (ETransactionAlreadyReversedException) MessageBox.Show('Transaction already reversed') catch (EReversingAReversingTransactionException) MessageBox.Show('Cannot reverse a reversing transaction') catch (ENoPermissionToReverseTranasctionException) MessageBox.Show('You do not have permission to reverse transactions') catch (ECannotReverseTransactionOnAlredyClosedSessionException) MessageBox.Show('This transaction is on a session that has already been closed') catch (ECannotReverseTooOldTransactionException) MessageBox.Show('This transaction is too old to be reversed') Downside for this is that when there's a new logical case to show the user: Tranasctions created by NSL cannot be reversed i don't simply show the user a message, and instead it leaks out as an unhandled excpetion, when really it should be handled with another MessageBox. The alternative is to create a single exception class: `EReverseTransactionException` With the understanding that any exception of this type is a logical check, that should be handled with a message box: catch (EReverseTransactionException) But it's still understood that any other exceptions, ones that involve, for example, an memory ECC parity error, continue unhandled. In other words, i don't convert all errors that can be thrown by the ReverseTransaction() method into EReverseTransactionException, only ones that are logically invalid cause of the user.

    This is a sample code for getting Email accounts which are configured in Outlook 2007. This is developed using native code of VSTO. We can also implement is using 3rd party libraries like Redemption. Dim olAccounts As Outlook.Accounts = Globals.ThisAddIn.Application.ActiveExplorer().Session.Accounts Dim acc As Outlook.Account MessageBox.Show(“No. of accounts: ” & olAccounts.Count.ToString) If olAccounts.Count > 0 Then ReDim emails(olAccounts.Count) For Each acc In olAccounts MessageBox.Show(“Name: ” & acc.UserName & “Email: ” & acc.SmtpAddress) Marshal.ReleaseComObject(acc) Next Else MessageBox.Show(“There are no accounts in Outlook”) End If  Hope this helps!

  • .NET socket timeout - blocking on Close method

    - by Mark
    I'm having trouble implementing a connect timeout using asynchronous socket calls. The idea being that I call BeginConnect on a Socket object, then use a timer to call Close() on the socket after a timeout period has elapsed. This works fine as long as the socket is created on the GUI thread - the Close method returns immediately, and the callback method is executed. However, if the socket is created on any other thread, the Close method blocks until the default IP timeout occurs. Code to reproduce: private Socket client; private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Creating the socket on a threadpool thread causes Close to block. ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem((object state) => { client = new Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Stream, ProtocolType.Tcp); IAsyncResult result = client.BeginConnect(IPAddress.Parse("144.1.1.1"), 23, new AsyncCallback(CallbackMethod), client); // Wait for 2 seconds before closing the socket. if (result.AsyncWaitHandle.WaitOne(2000)) { MessageBox.Show("Connected."); } else { MessageBox.Show("Timed out. Closing socket..."); client.Close(); MessageBox.Show("Socket closed."); } }); } private void CallbackMethod(IAsyncResult result) { MessageBox.Show("Callback started."); Socket client = result.AsyncState as Socket; try { client.EndConnect(result); } catch (ObjectDisposedException) { } MessageBox.Show("Callback finished."); } If you remove the QueueUserWorkItem line, creating the socket on the GUI thread, the socket closes instantly without blocking. Can anyone shed some light on what's going on? Thanks. Edit - System.Net trace output seems to be different depending on whether it's being connected on the GUI thread or a different thread: Trace from non-blocking close when using GUI thread Trace from blocking close when using non-GUI thread

  • Beginner - C# iteration through directory to produce a file list

  • New TabItem Content ActualHeight crashes Xaml Window

    - by Jack Navarro
    I am able to create new TabItems with Content dynamically to a new window by streaming the Xaml with XamlReader: NewWindow newWindow = new NewWindow(); newWindow.Show(); TabControl myTabCntrol = newWindow.FindName("GBtabControl") as TabControl; StringReader stringReader = new StringReader(XamlGrid); XmlReader xmlReader = XmlReader.Create(stringReader); TabItem myTabItem = new TabItem(); myTabItem.Header = qDealName; myTabItem.Content = (UIElement)XamlReader.Load(xmlReader); myTabCntrol.Items.Add(myTabItem); This works fine. It displays a new grid wrapped in a scrollviewer. The problem is access the TabItem content from the newWindow. TabItem ti = GBtabControl.SelectedItem as TabItem; string scrollvwnm = "scrollViewer" + ti.Header.ToString(); MessageBox.Show(ti.ActualHeight.ToString()); // returns 21.5 ScrollViewer scrlvwr = this.FindName(scrollvwnm) as ScrollViewer; MessageBox.Show(scrollvwnm); // Displays name double checked for accuracy MessageBox.Show(scrlvwr.ActualHeight.ToString()); //Crashes ScrollViewer scrlvwr = ti.FindName(scrollvwnm) as ScrollViewer; MessageBox.Show(scrollvwnm); // Displays name double checked for accuracy MessageBox.Show(scrlvwr.ActualHeight.ToString()); //Also Crashes Is there a method to refresh UI in XAML so the new window is able to access the newly loaded tab item content? Thanks

  • C# XAML get new width and height for Canvas

    - by Jack Navarro
    I have searched through many times but have not seen this before. Probably really simple question but can't wrap my head around it. Wrote a VSTO add-in for Excel that draws a Grid dynamically. Then launches a new window and replaces the contents of the Canvas with the generated Grid. The problem is with printing. When I call the print procedure the canvas.height and canvas.width returned is the old value prior to replacing it with the grid. Sample: string="<Grid Name=\"CanvasGrid\" xmlns=\"http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation\">..Lots of stuff..</Grid>"; // Launch new window and replace the Canvas element WpfUserControl newWindow = new WpfUserControl(); newWindow.Show(); //To test MessageBox.Show(myCanvas.ActualWidth.ToString()); //return 894 Grid testGrid = myCanvas.FindName("CanvasGrid") as Grid; MessageBox.Show("Grid " + testGrid.ActualWidth.ToString()); //return 234 StringReader stringReader = new StringReader(LssAllcChrt); XmlReader xmlReader = XmlReader.Create(stringReader); Canvas myCanvas = newWindow.FindName("GrphCnvs") as Canvas; myCanvas.Children.Clear(); myCanvas.Children.Add((UIElement)XamlReader.Load(xmlReader)); //To test MessageBox.Show(myCanvas.ActualWidth.ToString()); //return 894 but should be much larger the Grid spans all three of my screens Grid testGrid = myCanvas.FindName("CanvasGrid") as Grid; MessageBox.Show("Grid " + testGrid.ActualWidth.ToString()); //return 234 but should be much larger the Grid spans all three of my screens //Run code from WpfUserControl.cs after it loads from button click Grid testGrid = canvas.FindName("CanvasGrid") as Grid; MessageBox.Show("Grid " + testGrid.ActualWidth.ToString()); //return 234 but should be much larger the Grid spans all three of my screens So basically I have no way of telling what my new width and height are Any Ideas

  • No value given for one or more required parameters in connection initialisation

    - by Jean-François Côté
    I have an C# form application that use an access database. This application works perfectly in debug and release. It works on all version of Windows. But it crash on one computer with Windows 7. The message I got is: System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException: No value given for one or more required parameters. EDIT, after some debugging with messagebox on the computer that have the problem, here is the code that bug.The error is catched on the cmd.ExecuteReader(). The messagebox juste before is shown and the next one is the one in the catch with the exception below. Any ideas? public List<CoeffItem> GetModeleCoeff() { List<CoeffItem> list = new List<CoeffItem>(); try { OleDbDataReader dr; OleDbCommand cmd = new OleDbCommand("SELECT nIDModelAquacad, nIDModeleBorne, fCoefficient FROM tbl_ModelBorne ORDER BY nIDModelAquacad", m_conn); MessageBox.Show("Commande SQL créée avec succès"); dr = cmd.ExecuteReader(); MessageBox.Show("Exécution du reader sans problème!"); while (dr.Read()) { list.Add(new CoeffItem(Convert.ToInt32(dr["nIDModelAquacad"].ToString()), Convert.ToInt32(dr["nIDModeleBorne"].ToString()), Convert.ToDouble(dr["fCoefficient"].ToString()))); } MessageBox.Show("Lecture du reader"); dr.Close(); MessageBox.Show("Fermeture du reader"); } catch (OleDbException err) { MessageBox.Show("Erreur dans la lecture des modèles/coefficient: " + err.ToString()); } return list; } I think it's something related to the connection string but why only on that computer. Thanks for your help! • Windows7 Installer takes priority how to move it back during installation using C#?

    - by shahjapan
    I've a custom Action on Deployment project of .NET Applicaiton, which contains custom dialogbox to enter certain parameters, on invalid parameters I've shown MessageBox.Show - but its being hide by installer window, I tried windows forms too with Activate, TopMost, Focus,bring2front, etc serveral options but it comes by default behind the windows installer window and due to this user is not able to identify why installing process is not finishing - because actually its waiting for user to read the MessageBox and press OK. I've tried to implement IWin32Window with the handler of MsiExec Process, and shown the Messagebox but still its not working, anyone has idea ??? Here is my installer.cs function defination, public override void Install(IDictionary stateSaver)

  • SslStream.ReadByte() blocks thread?

    - by alex
    I'm trying to write an Imap4 client. For that I use a SslStream to Connect to the Server. Everything's fine until I send the "Login" command. When I try to get an Answer to it, SslStream.ReadByte() block the thread. The result is that my programm crashes always. Whats happening here?? Code: if (ssl) { s = stream; } int cc = 0; MessageBox.Show("entered"); while (true) { int xs = s.ReadByte(); MessageBox.Show(xs.ToString()); if (xs > 0) { buf.Add((byte)xs); cc++; if (xs == '\n') { break; } if (cc > 10) MessageBox.Show(en.GetString(buf.ToArray())); } else { break; } } MessageBox.Show("left");
