  • Set certain WSUS updates to auto-install

    We're running a WSUS server for the simple purpose of caching updates. Since we are a very small network of all "power users", we've got the domain group policy for WSUS updates on the clients set to prompt for download/install. i.e. We don't want updates to install without our knowledge. But there are a few cases where it would be nice to be able to set a certain update to auto-install. e.g. Windows Defender updates, Malicious Software Removal Tool, Outlook Junk Email Filter, etc. Basically all the silly little updates that you would always install anyway and don't require a restart. Is there a way to set the general policy to prompt for download/install, but auto-install certain regular updates? P.S. WSUS itself does have the facility to auto-approve certain updates.   • Can't upgrade my Ubuntu server, it gets stuck on openjdk-6-jre-headless

    I am using Ubuntu Server. When I do: apt-get upgrade it gets stuck on: Setting up openjdk-6-jre-headless (6b20-1.9.7-0ubuntu1) ... Why? And what can I do to stop it? I tried removing it with apt-get... I get this error: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. I resized the disk of Windows 7 from 25 GB to 50 GB: VBoxManage modifyhd Windows\ 7\ Pro.vdi --resize 50000 0%...10%...20%...30%...40%...50%...60%...70%...80%...90%...100% PROBLEM: I can' grow the partition, neither with Windows 7 itself nor with GParted: It looks like VirtualBox does not tell the client OS about the new size. What additional step is necessary?

  • Tell Tomcat to drop requests instead of dying "All threads (150) are currently busy"

    My Tomcat 6.0.26 sometimes dies saying: SEVERE: All threads (150) are currently busy, waiting. Increase maxThreads (150) or check the servlet status ... then Tomcat shuts down, and users can't access the webapp until I restart Tomcat manually. Some of the threads indeed take a long time to execute, it is by-design, not a thread-gone-wild problem. I know I could increase maxThreads, but that is not a viable solution, because the server might receive requests even more requests. QUESTION: Instead of dying, can I tell Tomcat to just drop requests when maxThreads is reached and the AJP/1.3 backlog is full? The problem is that when I check my DNS, I get this error: MX records shall not point to an alias defined by a CNAME Because of this error, it look like I can't send mails from some internet providers.

  • Thinkpad CPU temperature reaches 100°C after 10 minutes of heavy use

    Less than two years ago, I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad R500. When using the CPU heavily, it sometimes decides to reboot. I am using Linux, and a widget shows me the CPU temperature. The PC usually reboots when the temperature of the first core gets over 100°C Since I switched from Ubuntu 2010.10 32bit to Ubuntu 2011.04 64bit, it crashes much more often. I survive using these techniques: When in the office, I use a laptopcooler. When outside, I underclock to 800 MHz, by doing so it does not get too warm. QUESTION: Is it normal that a Thinkpad crashes if the CPU is at 100% for more than 10 minutes? How can I use the full power of my computer, for instance when showing CPU-hungry business intelligence tools to clients? The computer does not really feel that hot. Maybe the sensor itself is reporting wrong temperatures? Can I tell the BIOS to ignore it?

    I'm running a PgSQL 8.1 on a CentOS 4.4 system (not upgradable unfortunately). There's a Java app running on top of the PgSQL daemon and we got to reindex the database every 2 months or so. Also important: the database isn't growing. It looks like the bloat is now coming faster than before and this tends to increase.     Each block on a SSD has a finite number of writes. This is mitigated on modern drives by "spreading" the writes around as you use the drive. I'm wondering if you partition a SSD into several partitions (a Mac using Boot Camp, for example) if this measure is defeated somewhat - can the writes be spread across the entire drive? Or are they contained strictly within the partition boundaries? Any SSD controller engineers here :)?

  • How to link to a subfolder of a share?

    On my Windows XP server, a folder called Share2 is shared. It contains a subfolder called folder3. The guest account is protected by a password, which means network users have to type the guest password to access it. When a user types \\server\Share2 in his file explorer, he is prompted for a password. When a user types \\server\Share2\folder3 in his file explorer, an error appears. He is not even prompted for a password. This is problematic because I want to link to this particular folder. How can I link to folder3? Notes: - Both Desktop shortcuts and HTML links in IE7/8 give an error if I link to folder3, but work if I just link to Share2. - Using the file:// syntax instead of the \\ syntax leads to the same results. - Password setting per http://www.lancelhoff.com/how-to-password-protect-a-shared-folder - Not using "Simple File Sharing" - The error message is ???????????????????????? which means "could not find it. check the path and try again". No English Windows around to try, sorry! It is easy to reproduce the problem though, so can anyone post the English error message for the sake of searchability? Thanks!

  • 502 Bad Gateway error after failed requests using Passenger

    I've got a staging server running nginx 1.0.5 using Rails 3.1 under Passenger 3.0.9. The problem is that a request sent just after one where there's an application error return 502 Bad Gateway. To test it I've set up a simple controller with an action that just raise a dummy exception. One request will show the Rails error message and the next one will show nginx 502 Bad Gateway error, then it goes back to the Rails application error, etc. While investigating this problem I've found out that load testing the application (which increase the number of application processes) make that issue disapear. That is until the extra processes are shutdown, then it reappear. I've tried setting the passenger_min_instances option, but doing so doesn't change anything and in this case each time an application error happen one instance is killed while after load testing all instances are kept alive. P.S.: Some people on my team told me that they've seen the 502 error even when there's no application error but I've not been able to reproduce that. Update: Just found out how to display the responses status codes using ab and most of them are 502!

    I am deploying Linux/Firefox on a corporate Kerberos network. I followed this Kerberos-on-Firefox procedure but still Firefox does not connect via the company's Kerberos. I am using Firefox 3.0.18 on RedHat EL Server 5.5 Here is what I did: Run kinit on the command line to create a Kerberos ticket Check with klist: the ticket is valid until tomorrow, service principal is krbtgt/[email protected]. In Firefox, set network.negotiate-auth.trusted-uris and network.negotiate-auth.delegation-uris to .dc.thecompany.com. Load the company's portal page via its full hostname: http://server37.thecompany.com/alfresco. (note: server37 is actually the machine I am running Firefox on, but that should not be a problem I guess) PROBLEM: the company's intranet portal still serves me the login/password page. The same portal correctly uses Kerberos on Internet Explorer/Windows 7 machines, same settings, and shows the user's personal page. The server does not see any Kerberos request coming. Did I do something wrong? I enabled NSPR_LOG_MODULES=negotiateauth:5 as explained here, but the log file stays empty.

    I'm using KVM and libvirt on my host (Debian lenny) + 2 bridges per guest (one for mgmt, one for public traffic). That setup isn't stable at all, sometimes I can do pings to a management ip, sometimes not. I don't know if my bridging paramateres are correct, could you check ? or if there is anything wrong ... Please also note that interface on guest doesn't flap and that I got not logs on my host.   • MegaCli newly created disk doesn't appear under /dev/sdX

    After having successfully added 2 new disks in a new RAID virtual drive (background initialization done), I would have exepected it to appear under /dev/sdh but it's not there (so, unusable). The system is running a CentOS 5.2 64 bits, HAL and udev daemons are running, not records of any sdh apparition under the messsage log file or in dmesg, only MegaCli do see that virtual drive. Any idea ?   • Mapping an sFTP connection to a Windows drive?

    I'm looking for a way to map an sFTP connection to a Windows (Vista) drive. In other words, a tool that would add a new drive (let's say N:) to my computer, that would directly point to my remote server via sFTP. That way, "N:\my_dir\file.txt" would actually be something like "/home/user/my_dir/file.txt" on the remote server. Reading the file on Windows would download it, and writing content in it would upload it...network transfers being made via sFTP. I'm aware of Novell NetDrive, but it has various issues with long filenames, and seems to corrupt UTF-8 files content depending on the BOM. Do you know about any reliable alternative ? Thanks ! Edit : I have complete control of the remote server, except that it's remote enough for me not to be able to physically access it.

  • RPM with RHEL: install 2 version of same package / different arch

    I think the title is pretty self explanatory :) Is it possible, under RHEL (v 5) to install 2 instances of the same packages with 32 bit support for one and 64 bits support for the other one? Obviously, the running host has a 64 bit kernel and has the compatibility libraries required. (in this case, we would need a 64 bits JDK and a 32 bits one). If yes, are there any special rpm flag to use (change of installation directory for instance)? Thanks in advance,

  • Trancoding a video with vlc and the MPEG-4 codec with a video bit rate

    When I try to trancode a video with vlc using the MPEG-4 codec and a video bit rate, I get the following error : Either both buffer size and max rate or neither must be specified Here is the command line I used : vlc -vvv myvideo.m2ts --sout-ffmpeg-strict=-2 --sout '#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,vb=2000,acodec=mp4a,ab=96}:standard{access=file,mux=mp4,dst=/path/file.mp4}' It seems that I can't specify a video bit rate with the MPEG-4 codec. (If I remove the vb option, it works). So how can I specify a video bit rate with the MPEG-4 codec ?

  • There is a porn domain pointing to my site

    Let's say example.com is my real site, and fooexample.com is the porn site. fooexample.com are pointing to my ip. Now you could think, just don't mind it right. Well the thing is that they are driving load of traffic. Not only that, but my main domain example.com become unavailable after a couple of minutes and the only domain that work is either fooexample.com or none of those 2. What i have done so far was using mod_rewrite to redirect the porn site to google but my domain still become unavailable. Blocking the ips served no result either. I hope someone will be able to help me because this is a huge problem right now. Thanks.
