  I'm looking for a script, functioning like the Google homepage that fetches data from a database rather than the internet. This is not intended to be a search engine, but a repository of jokes that can be pulled depending on the keywords typed. No sophisticated search techniques are required - keyword based is perfectly fine. If some mechanism of up/down-voting jokes can be incorporated, that would be fantastic, but I'm presuming that will be an entirely different game.

• Run external application on markdown source in ikiwiki

  Can I add a button to each wiki page in ikiwiki which launches an external application (on the client side) or script with the markdown code of the current page as input? Edit: I didn't realize that it might be complicated to do it on client side as Zenklys' answer suggested. So perhaps I should describe more concretely what I have in mind: I want to have two buttons: "Get LaTeX" and 2. "Get pdf". Clicking on "Get LaTeX should generate a LaTeX file and the browser should simply open or download that file. Analogously for the pdf. It would even be ok, to have a button "Generate LaTeX" instead, which generates the LaTeX code and changes after the generation to "Get LaTeX" which simply points to the LaTeX file. So it is not really necessary to do the generation of the files on client side. Would be ok, if this is done (on a temporary folder) on server side. For the LaTeX resp. pdf generation I want to use a custom wrapper script for pandoc, let's call it mymarkdown2latex resp. mymarkdown2pdf.

• Web-based CMS for mobile app

  I'm just about to start developing a mobile app which needs to be fed from a CMS. I started designing the tables when I thought there must be something out there which could save me a load of time and let me concentrate on the mobile side of things. So, I'm looking for a CMS that will let me create hierarchical "pages" which will just be 4-5 database fields with a simple front-end to allow to edit and update them. I don't mind having to write some code to layout the database and forms etc, any saving on starting from scratch would be good. The only requirement is that I be able to access the data via some sort of web service, REST, JSON, XML, anything really... Can anyone suggest anything that might help? Thanks, J

  I am looking for a specific content management platform that would display themes for my application. Requirements are as folllows: Any user can upload content, but has to be approved by an administrator When the user uploads the content, an external application is called to generate a thumbnail I could create this using codeigniter or something, but I would much prefer to use an existing system. I have experience with Drupal (seems a little bloated for my needs), and Wordpress (I'm using it as main website right now). Maybe I need a plugin for WordPress instead of another CMS. WordPress currently blocks uploads of my file type. I can modify it, but it's a pain to update it every time WordPress has a new release.

  We are looking for some PHP-based auction software to start off with and I have have been scouring the net many times and am almost ready to purchase phpprobid as this seems to be the best and most feature rich of the lot; only bad things I have read is the lack of after-sales customer service. Others I have also looked at include: AJ Auction Software WeBid GuruScript Auction PHP Auction (enuuk). Many of them turn me off by having unprofessional sites which makes me think their software will be the same and be rubbish. Many also don't go into detail with the feature set like PHP Pro Bid does. So before we purchase PHP Pro Bid I was wondering if I missed something good? Thanks!

  I want to build a database for my no-profit association, and i was planning to do it by myself. But then i realize that really i don't have the time to buid a solid, secure system. So i was thinking, maybe like cms do exist, maybe there are also database management systems. I mean a layer of abstraction over the database that allow you manage data, manage access to data, create widgets with and expand the data. Maybe with a frontend to use this data and a backend to manage it. that is a cms but not based on pages and post but on data! Moreover, i would like some standard solution, because my IT management position ends this year, so i need something that will be easy to use and expand even by someone that is not a developer. So do exist something that fit my need? PS: i would really like some modern and visually pleasant solution, javascritp and ajax heavy and that relies the fewest is possible on server and reloading of the pages.

  I am serching for a script (preferably in PHP) or an external solution which lets me create an "url shortener" with advanced reports. We have been using Google Short Links for a while: it works really well, but it lacks reporting (it only displays a counter with the total number of redirects). Our setup is as follows: "go.mydomain.com" points to the web service, and we can create links such as "go.mydomain.com/product1". What I'm looking for is a similar service (or self-hosted solution) but with advanced reports, so we can track redirects by day, month, etc, distinguish between mobile and desktop users (very important!) and so on.

  I am developing a forum for a research project, i am using Vanilla forum (though i am not tied to this yet). Another feature of this site will be a personal journal/diary/blog. Only the user and administrators will have access to the journal. The journal does not need any advanced features. Does anybody have any suggestions on software/script that could easily be integrated with Vanilla forum for this purpose?   How can I go about/what is the best way of estimating what kind of server resources I will require at the launch of a new project. Let's say for instance I'd gathered 10k users email addresses that opted-in to be informed when we launch. I didn't really want to go for a cloud solution at the moment. Should I just get a reasonably-specced dedicated server and go from there, or should I be looking at services like Amazon EC2? Or should I start out with EC2 for the fully-flexible resources, then once things stabilize I'll be able to sort a fixed hosting deal that is adequate elsewhere? Sub-question: What's a good way of estimating what load a particular application will place on the server per user?

• fault tolerant uploading tool

  I'm setting up a wordpress site for a friend who has some somewhat large audio files (150M)... He's on a bad connection and I'd guess it'll take him a while to upload those files with the normal wordpress way. I'm looking for a tool that I can install on the server that allows uploads and is also fault tolerant... for example if you loses his connection, or power, or whatever it'll pick up where it left off. I realize web technologies probably don't do that, but perhaps flash or something? Any ideas?

• Looking for Your Next Challenge...Don't Stretch Too Far

  In my role as a Recruiter at Oracle I receive a large number of resumes of people who are interested in working with us. People contact me for a number of reasons, it can be about a specific role that we may be hiring for or they may send me an email asking if there are any suitable roles for them. Sometimes when I speak to people we have similar roles available to the roles that they may actually be in now. Sometimes people are interested in making this type of sideways move if their motivation to change jobs is not necessarily that they are looking for increased responsibility or career advancement (example: money, redundancy, work environment). However there are times when after walking through a specific role with a candidate that they may say to me - "You know that is very similar to the role that I am doing now. I would not want to move unless my next role presents me with the next challenge in my career". This is a far statement - if a person is looking to change jobs for the next step in their career they should be looking at suitable opportunities that will address their need. In this instance a sideways step will not really present any new challenges or responsibilities. The main change would be the company they are working for. Candidates looking for a new role because they are looking to move up the ladder should be looking for a role that offers them the next level of responsibility. I think the best job changes for people who are looking for career advancement are the roles that stretch someone outside of their comfort zone but do not stretch them so much that they can't cope with the added responsibilities and pressure. In my head I often think of this example in the same context of an elastic band - you can stretch it, but only so much before it snaps. That is what you should be looking for - to be stretched but not so much that you snap. If you are for example in an individual contributor role and would like to move into a management role - you may not be quite ready to take on a role that is managing a large workforce or requires significant people management experience. While your intentions may be right, your lack of management experience may fit you outside of the scope of search to be successful this type of role. In this example you can move from an individual contributor role to a management role but it may need to be managing a smaller team rather than a larger team. While you are trying to make this transition you can try to pick up some responsibilities in your current role that would give you the skills and experience you need for your next role. Never be afraid to put your hand up to help on a new project or piece of work. You never know when that newly gained experience may come in handy in your career. • Hosting files with support for file tagging / keywords

  I have a large (approx. 25GB) collection of files I would like to host online for people to view or download. I have a spare computer I can use as a dedicated server for these files. I'm looking for a method of, or piece of software for, hosting my files where I can assign tags or keywords to the files, and people viewing my files online can search the collection via the tags. By way of approximate solutions I've found so far, I see that there is software such as Collectorz.com or Readerware for creating databases of one's books / music / movies, and these databases can be searched by tags or keywords, and the databases can be made available and searchable online; this would suit my purposes except that my files are not necessarily books, music, or movies, and I want the files themselves accessible online, not a database describing my files. A commercially-available solution like the ones above would be acceptable, but I'd prefer to have the whole setup under my control (i.e. I'd like to either implement it by hand, or use commercial software that doesn't rely on using the company's servers, paying them a continued fee, etc.). The current extent of my internet experience is designing a few Google Sites, so I know there's a fair chance I won't understand the answers I receive, but I'm always happy to have a summer project :)
