case-specific mod rewrite on Wordpress subdomain multisite

I have split a Wordpress blog into multiple category-specific blogs using subdomains, as the topics in the original blog were too broad to be lumped together effectively. Posts were exported from the parent www blog and imported into the subject-specific subdomain blogs. I believe .htaccess provides mod rewrite for all subdomains (including the original www) in a single .htaccess file. I use .htaccess to perform 301 redirect on post categories to the relevant post on the subdomain's blog. eg: RedirectMatch 301 ^/auto/(.*)$ http://auto.example.com/$1 The problem I have is that the category has been retained in the permalink structure in the subdomain blog, so that www.example.com/auto/mercedes is now auto.example.com/auto/mercedes. The 1st URL is redirect to the 2nd, but unfortunately, the 2nd URL is redirected to auto.example.com/mercedes using the same rewrite rule, which is not found, as the permalink on the subdomain's blog retains the parent category of auto. The solution would be to adjust the permalink structure in the subdomain's WP settings, so that the top level category does not duplicate the subdomain. My question would be: how do I then strip a section of the original (www) blog's post URL from the subdomain's URL when redirecting? eg: How do I redirect www.example.com/auto/mercedes to auto.example.com/mercedes? I'm assuming this would be a regular expression trick, which I am not great at. Update: I might have to use: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !auto.example.com$ in the default Wordpress if loop in .htaccess, and seperate my custom subdomain redirections into a second if loop section.

"# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time." my question is when and where the module loading job done? my first guess is some init scripts in /etc/init.d/ but grep got none. then i think it might be the init ramdisk, but after decompress it, i found conf/modules which is different with /etc/modules. any idea? thanx.

GIMP Slow Startup

Is there any way to speed up GIMP's startup time on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit 1.6 [Dual] Intel Processors? On XP [different computer], it loads in less than 3 seconds. On Vista, it takes 20 seconds: 2 Seconds (other - fonts, brushes, etc) 18 Seconds (extension-script-fu) It just freezes at extension-script-fu. Looking at ProcessExplorer (or Task Manager, whatever), I see that it's not taking any CPU. EDIT: it does seem to be taking 50% of the CPU. It gets stuck for about 18 seconds, then starts working again, and the actual GIMP program pops up [...finally]. I have the latest stable version running (I think). I tried it with XP SP2 Compatibiliy mode and/or Run As Administrator, but that didn't help. EDIT: One way would be to disable script-fu. Does anyone know how to disable it at startup? (NOTE: Just wanted to point out that the title and the tags are the same. :D )

Rails - Help with rake task

I have a rake task I need to run in order to sanitize (remove forward slashes) some data in the database. Here's the task: namespace :db do desc "Remove slashes from old-style URLs" task :substitute_slashes => :environment do puts "Starting" contents = Content.all contents.each do |c| if c.permalink != nil c.permalink.gsub!("/","") c.save! end end puts "Finished" end end Which allows me to run rake db:substitute_slashes --trace If I do puts c.permalink after the gsub! I can see it's setting the attribute properly. However the save! doesn't seem to be working because the data is not changed. Can someone spot what the issue may be? Another thing, I have paperclip installed and this task is triggering [paperclip] Saving attachments. which I would rather avoid.

.htaccess redirect question

I have a slight problem with .htaccess redirect. I have a dynamic site with 2 levels of variables - content="type -(alpha)" and ID="number" but this is very not seo friendly what I really would like to create is a rewrite rule that generates a "friendly" url for serach engines & users alike. Very much like WordPress does. Each ID is already unique (obviously) and on creation is creating a unique "permalink" field so for example ID=1 has a "permalink field" as "2009/10/27/page title" and ID=100 would be "2010/10/27 page title". I would like folder/wall.php?content=type&ID=number to redirect to folder/permalink.php/html/htm (don't mind a non dynamic extension) Any clues? - this is not right (I know) but it also "breaks" my css file RewriteEngine On RewriteRule wall/content/(.*)/ID/(.*)/ wall.php?content=$1&ID=$2 RewriteRule wall/content/(.*)/ID/(.*) wall.php?content=$1&ID=$2

Converting Complicated Oracle Join Syntax

I have asked for help before on porting joins of this nature, but nothing this complex. I am porting a bunch of old SQL from oracle to postgres, which includes a lot of (+) style left joins. I need this in a format that pg will understand. Building a plug-in for Windows Live Writer

This tutorial will show you how to build a plug-in for Windows Live Writer. Windows Live Writer is a blogging tool that Microsoft provides for free. It includes an open API for .NET developers to create custom plug-ins. In this tutorial, I will show you how easy it is to build one. Open VS2008 or VS2010 and create a new project. Set the target framework to 2.0, Application Type to Class Library and give it a name. In this tutorial, we are going to create a plug-in that generates a twitter message with your blog post name and a TinyUrl link to the blog post. It will do all of this automatically after you publish your post. Once, we have a new projected created. We need to setup the references. Add a reference to the WindowsLive.Writer.Api.dll located in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Writer\ folder, if you are using X64 version of Windows. You will also need to add a reference to System.Windows.Forms System.Web from the .NET tab as well. Once that is complete, add your “using” statements so that it looks like whats shown below: Live Writer Plug-In "Using" using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using WindowsLive.Writer.Api; using System.Web; Now, we are going to setup some build events to make it easier to test our custom class. Go into the Properties of your project and select Build Events, click edit the Post-build and copy/paste the following line: XCOPY /D /Y /R "$(TargetPath)" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Writer\Plugins\" Your screen should look like the one pictured below: Next, we are going to launch an external program on debug. Scenario: There are two entities say 'Books' and 'Book Reviews'. There can be multiple books and each book can have multiple reviews. Each review and book should have a separate permalink. Books and Reviews can be added by users using separate input forms. As soon as any book/review is added it should be accessible by its permalink. Anyone can point me in the right direction on how should this be implemented?

Internationalization of static pages with Rails

I feel like I'm missing something really simple and I keep spinning my wheels on this problem. I currently have internationalization working throughout my app. The translations work and the routes work perfectly. At least, most of the site works with the exception of the routes to my two static pages, my "About" and "FAQ" pages. Every other link throughout the app points to the proper localized route. For example if I select "french" as my language, links point to the appropriate "(/:locale)/controller(.:format)." However, despite the changes I make throughout the app my links for the "About" and "FAQ" refuse to point to "../fr/static/about" and always point to "/static/about." To make matters stranger, when I run rake routes I see: "GET (/:locale)/static/:permalink(.:format) pages#show {:locale=/en|fr/}" and when I manually type in "../fr/static/about" the page translates perfectly. Wordpress and Dynamic Programming Php

I have geography pages for two types of business listings. Each page goes from state, county, city, but I need to have the same geography shared between two types of business. My two business types are dentist and chiropractors. I am trying to have a permalink structure like this: enter code here xyz.com/dentist/alabama enter code here xyz.com/dentist/alabama/polk-county/ enter code here xyz.com/chiropractors/alabama/ enter code here xyz.com/chiropractors/alabama/polk-county/ I originally was going to load the geography as pages and subpages, but with that method I cannot get the permalink separated by the type chiropractor and dentist. So now I have created a custom post type one for chiropractor and one for dentist which give me the permalink xyz.com/dentist and xyz.com/chiropractor. My question is now how to handle my category geography page. I was wondering if in wordpress it is possible to create a shell page such as xyz.com/dentist/[state]/ and then through php dynamically build a page for each state? So where it shows [state] it will be replaced with the actual state such as alabama, california etc when that specific page is viewed. But the shell page is just 1 page in the database. If so could someone give me a basic explanation on how to instruct a programmer to do this? Thank you.

FeedValidator & Feedburner get 404 when accessing wordpress RSS feeds when permalinks are enabled.

I'm helping a friend set up a self-hosted Wordpress blog + feedburner and I'm seeing a problem with the feeds that I'm finding somewhat mysterious. Using the default permalink structure (e.g., ?p=123) everything works as expected; I can follow the feed in Google reader, navigate to it manually, and set it up in feedburner. However, once I switch away from the default permalink structure, feedburner and feedvalidator both report that accessing the feed is returning HTTP-404 and Google reader no longer shows new posts (I'm assuming for the same reason), but I can navigate to the feed using a browser. When I do that it appears as though nothing is wrong; there is a feed there and it contains all the posts I expect it to have. I've re-started the feedburner & reader set-up from the beginning after changing the link structure, so I don't think they're doing anything silly like looking at the feed at its old address. I've seen people with similar problems in various other places but there doesn't seem to be a good answer anywhere.

smarter character replacement using ruby gsub and regexp

Hi guys! I'm trying to create permalink like behavior for some article titles and i don't want to add a new db field for permalink. So i decided to write a helper that will convert my article title from: "O "focoasa" a pornit cruciada, împotriva barbatilor zgârciti" to "o-focoasa-a-pornit-cruciada-impotriva-barbatilor-zgarciti". While i figured out how to replace spaces with hyphens and remove other special characters (other than -) using: title.gsub(/\s/, "-").gsub(/[^\w-]/, '').downcase I am wondering if there is any other way to replace a character with a specific other character from only one .gsub method call, so I won't have to chain title.gsub("a", "a") methods for all the UTF-8 special characters of my localization. I was thinking of building a hash with all the special characters and their counterparts but I haven't figured out yet how to use variables with regexps. What I was looking for is something like: title.gsub(/\s/, "-").gsub(*replace character goes here*).gsub(/[^\w-]/, '').downcase Thanks!

Why is Django reverse() failing with unicode?

Here is a django models file that is not working as I would expect. I would expect the to_url method to do the reverse lookup in the urls.py file, and get a url that would correspond to calling that view with arguments supplied by the Arguments model. from django.db import models class Element(models.Model): viewname = models.CharField(max_length = 200) arguments = models.ManyToManyField('Argument', null = True, blank = True ) @models.permalink def to_url(self): d = dict( self.arguments.values_list('key', 'value') ) return (self.viewname, (), d) class Argument(models.Model): key = models.CharField(max_length=200) value = models.CharField(max_length=200) The value d ends up as a dictionary from a unicode string to another unicode string, which I believe, should work fine with the reverse() method that would be called by the permalink decorator, however, it results in: TypeError: reverse() keywords must be strings

Honor Whitespace padding to display columns in fixed width <select>

I am trying to create the effect of columns in a dropdown by padding text with whitespace as in this example: <select style="font-family: courier;"> <option value="1">[Aux1+1] [*] [Aux1+1] [@Tn=PP] </option> <option value="2">[Main] [*] [Main Apples Oranges] [@Fu=$p] </option> <option value="3">[Main] [*] [Next NP] [@Fu=n] </option> <option value="4">[Main] [Dr] [Main] [@Ty=$p] </option> </select> According to this blog, it's possible. The problem is the whitespace is contracted so that the columsn don't line up. SAme results in FF, IE6 and Chrome. What am I missing?
