  • UTP cable for telephone line possible?

    - by Chris
Hi, One of my customers has build a new house with pre-installed cables for internet. The only thing he didn't think about was installing a cable for his telephone line. Behind his desk, he has a "spare" UTP cable, my question. Can this cable be used to replace a telephone line. This client has a internet and telephony contract, using a experiabox phone/internet modem. Any help would be great. I knowe I have to use a RJ11 plug.

  • New CAT5 cable run is unstable - bad jacks? Bad cable?

    - by BeemerGuy
This is a little project I'm doing at home. I wanted to wire two rooms together (basically, the router is one room, and the switch is in the second room). So I ran a CAT5 between the two rooms, and wired an RJ45 jack in each room. I then hooked up the two jacks with two CAT5 cable to run it through the cable tester, and all 8 wires seem good. Now, when I connect the switch and the router, the connection is unstable -- I ping the router and it barely holds on for two pings before it disconnects, and stays in that unstable state. Just to make sure the router and the switch are ok, I connected them with long wire between the two rooms and the connection is absolutely stable, and pings continuously. What could be the cause for the unstable connection? Especially that it pings a few times, so there IS a connection. But why is it unstable? And how come the cable tester says it's ok, but it's unstable?

  • Does HDMI cable "quality" actually affect transmission?

    - by TheDeeno
I really don't want to pay a ridiculous price for a "name brand" HDMI cable if it doesn't really do anything for me. I'm just curious: now that most transmission is digital (packetized) is there such a thing as a "quality" cable? I suspect that if the cable works at all, I'm safe saying I have a quality connection. I just want to double check. Some of these reviewers complain that generic cables "create noise, lack bandwidth, can't handle X, etc". I'm skeptical of these reviews. If the logic for HDMI cables and quality can be applied to cables in general, please elaborate on that as well.

  • Computer to Tv cable question

    - by Keith D
Hi all. Heres my query : I have a PC with all the usual outputs and a couple of TVs in the house with inputs to connect to a computer. Now, what i would like to do is get rid of cable TV and using the input into the spliters in the basement,( ie. where the input cable from outside actually feeds the system ) have the computer become the "Cable supplier" ( so to speak ) and have the output ( via some sort of box ) from the computer, convert what is on my monitor into an RF signal that is then fed into the cables in my house and ultimately to each TV / room . I don't know if there is such an item but would welcome any thoughts you might have on such a set up. I am not into HD or the like, so the picture quality needs only to be watchable, not HD. I don't want to have to set up seperate cables to feed the audio on each TV. Thanks in advance!

  • USB cable model for Kodak EasyShare Z740

    - by Robert Munteanu
I've lost the original USB cable for my Kodak EasyShare Z740, and I can't figure out which model I should replace it with. I did not find the original parts, as the camera is pretty old. I did find the cable on the Kodak site, but I I've tried both mini-USB and micro-USB and neither fit. Alternatively, bonus points for pointing out a dealer in Bucharest, Romania which has the original part. N.B. I do use a card reader now, but I find it more convenient to use the cable.

  • How can you tell a USB cable version?

    - by Keltari
Here is a question a student asked me in one of my A+ certification classes: How can you tell a USB cable version? I honestly dont know the answer, I cant find one either. USB cables are rated for versions 1, 1.1, 2, and now 3. I have seen their versions on the packaging, but never marked on the cable itself. Since the respective versions are manufactured differently, there is a difference between them. So, how can you tell? On Wikipedia: USB cables v.2 and earlier do use a "twisted pair" method, but doesnt specify if the cables themselves are the same or different. Is the cable rating system for v.2 and earlier just marketing hype?

  • PC power supply & normal range for voltages reported in BIOS hardware monitor?

    - by Chris W. Rea
I'm trying to diagnose whether my computer has an ample power supply. Sometimes when I play a video-intensive game, both monitors lose the video signal, even though the computer remains on and sound playing. A theory I have is: the video card isn't getting sufficient power. I can't imagine it's overheating because the machine is well-ventilated and the video card isn't hot to touch when this happens. Anyway, in my PC's BIOS there's a Hardware Monitor page, and among other voltages reported (such as CPU, DRAM, South Bridge, etc.) I can see the following values: 3.3V 3.152V 5V 4.944V 12V 11.872V Are those the voltages used by peripherals? What voltage should I be referencing if I want to know what my video card (PCI Express) is consuming? What is the normal range of values reported for those? My values above appear to be under by approximately 4.5%, 1.1%, and 1.1% respectively. Is that cause for concern? How else should I be determining if my power supply is "right-sized" for my PC and video card, or am I perhaps barking up the wrong tree?

  • Desktop PC does not power up on power button

    - by hIpPy
When I press the power button on my desktop, it does not power up completely. Before I press the power button, I see lights on the motherboard. Everything is normal. On power button press, the fans on the cpu, graphics card and motherboard start to spin a little for a second or two and then they stop. No beeps during this process. It has been doing this for a while now but it used to start up after some trials. Once it starts up, I have NO issues at all like random shutdowns so it is not an issue with OS. I'm just guessing here but it seems as if the PSU (Antec TP2-550ATX) is dying out and does not have enough power now - just a guess. It's an old desktop assembled in 2005 but I have maintained it well. Any ideas? Please help. Thanks. Below is the complete configuration. • Access Home Network Server via External Address (DSL vs Cable)

    - by Dominic Barnes
For the last few months, I've been using a server on my home network for basic backups and hosting some small websites. Up until this past week, I've been using Comcast (cable) as an ISP and now that I've moved into an apartment, I'm using AT&T. (DSL) I've set up dynamic DNS and I can verify it works externally. However, I can't seem to access the public address from within the local network. Is there something DSL does differently from Cable that makes this frustration possible?

  • What is the best way to keep a VGA cable plugged into a laptop

    - by Ryan B
I am looking for the best way to keep a VGA cable plugged into a laptop for an extended period of time. The laptop doesn't have the female end threads like you may see on a video card. Between the VGA port location and my hand size, I knock the cable out often. I am working on getting a docking station, but not sure when it would be ordered (work-related). I found an adapter, but not sure if it will work. Thanks

  • Multiple cable adapter setup not working - VGA to smartphone. All cables tested and work

    - by Christopher Rucinski
Issue Pictured overhead projector setup does not work. #1 - #2 - #3 - Phone. All cables are tested and work! The issue is the HDMI connection between cable #2 and #3. With all other cables, the screen will automatically be displayed onto the projector screen. No extra work needed. With the pictured setup, the smartphone screen is not displayed onto the projector screen. What is the issue with the HDMI connection?? Background We recently had to do presentations at work (school), but the administration only provided VGA means of hooking up to it. Mostly likely reason probably dealt with cost. Anyways, there are several teachers that have brand new Samsung Series 9 ultrabooks (or similar). You know, the ones without VGA support. So I bought an adapter for those ultrabooks. Cable #5 in the picture below. However, both my coworker and I have been wanting to just display our phone screens on the projector. This I knew would require some extra work. What I have VGA cable to projector (cables go through the wall) For laptops HDMI to VGA cable For laptops MHL adapter For 11-pin microUSB phones microHDMI to VGA cable For ultrabooks 11-pin to 5-pin microUSB adapter For older 5-pin microUSB phones) Equipment Projectors 1 projector with VGA and HDMI input (issue is coworkers forget to switch sources) 1 projector with VGA only input Laptops 2 new Samsung ultrabooks w/o VGA or HDMI support 1 ultrabook with VGA and HDMI support several other laptops with at least VGA support 1 tablet with 11-pin microUSB at least 1 new phone with 11-pin microUSB at least 1 old phone with 5-pin microUSB Tested VGA cable (#1) to laptop Good VGA cable (#1) to HDMI adapter (#2) to laptop Good VGA cable (#1) to microHDMI adapter (#5) to laptop Good Projector to HDMI cable (not shown) to MHL adapter (#3) to Galaxy Note 3 smartphone Good VGA cable (#1) to HDMI adapter (#2) to MHL adapter (#3) to Galaxy Note 3 smartphone Does not work!! Extra Notes The 11-pin MHL adapter will not fit inside the 11-pin to 5-pin microUSB adapter so older phones can be displayed on the screen.

  • DH61AG's mythical 2 pin 19v power socket and is too low of votage bad?

    - by Nick Orton
I have an intel dh61ag motherboard. It has an external 19v power adapter. It also has a 1x2 pin 19VDC internal power connector. Now I cannot find a psu or adapter or anything that will plug into this. In an intel forum, one person said that he plugged half of a 2x2 psu connector in and it worked. Since this would deliver 12v into a socket that asks for 19v, I suspect that this is a bad idea. I don't know much about hardware. Can anyone explain to me why this would be a bad idea?

  • Computer sometimes doesn't boot after power failure, what should I replace?

    - by user1416256
I have a new computer that behaves strange after a power failure. When I switch off the computer it will not boot anymore. Completely unplugging the computer for about an hour cures the issue for the next boot. The internal leds are working I have no idea where to start looking. What, in your opinion could be the cause of this strange behaviour ? My best bet would be to replace the power supply Would that be a good place to start ?

  • Cable management techniques

    - by cornjuliox
How do you manage the giant jungle of cables behind your PC? When you have 2 or more PCs next to each other, you wind up with this giant mess cables that's a pain in the neck to clean especially when both computers are running 24/7 and any fidgeting with the cables is likely to cause data loss and/or angry users. So far I've tried masking tape, cable ties and plain old string but none have been very effective. The masking tape kept the cables in place, but over time they ended up leaving this awful sticky residue on the sides of the cables that just won't come off gets all over your fingers and is horrible horrible horrible. I have nightmares about that stuff. We used cable ties and 'folded' up some of the longer cables so that they weren't any longer than they needed to be, but this meant that the position of some of our devices like the keyboard and the mouse were essentially 'fixed' until we removed the ties. The string didn't work much differently and required that we tie them properly or risk it coming loose. I would switch to a wireless keyboard and mouse, but I don't want to have to deal with the added expense of batteries, even the rechargable ones. Plus I don't want them to die on me at a crucial moment (happened to me once while playing Firearms _<). How do large offices and data centers manage their masses of cable?

  • VGA Cable gave me an Electric Shock when connecting a Projector to a Laptop

    - by Felipe Luarte
Yesterday I was trying to connect a Viewsonic Projector to my Samsung RC420 laptop... I followed this steps: I Plugged the Projector to a power source, in parallel I did the same thing with the laptop. Then I turned on the laptop, but not the Projector (this one turns a bright light when is connected to a power source). I put the VGA Cable to the Projector (this one being still turned down) and then when I was getting close to the VGA port of the Laptop... BAM! A big spark appear between the port and the cable! Immediately the whole electricity of my floor went off. A part of the port in my laptop kind of... melted down. It seems to be where the spark started. The same thing happened to the part of the cable involved. Now I'm using the laptop, and it seems that there is no problem in it, I haven't connect anything to the VGA port yet. And the projector is still working to, well... it turns on, and I haven't connect anything yet too. The projector was connected to the power source by a homemade electric extension.

  • Computer making strange sound when turned on, ever since power outage

    - by Dot NET
Recently we experienced a power outage, and the PC was off. However, once the power came back, I switched on the PC and heard a strange noise - almost as if the hard disk or fans were struggling to work. I can't really describe the sound, but it's a laboured, loud sound almost like a jack-hammer. This has been persisting ever since the power outage, however the noise stops after around 10 minutes or so, and doesn't start again until the computer is turned off and on again. At first I thought it had something to do with the HDD, but all my files are intact, chkdsk did not report any issues and performance is 100% unchanged, even in games (so the gfx card is fine, and so is the HDD most likely). My PC setup basically has around 3 cooling fans, but I'm not sure if it's one of these either as the noise actually stops after 10 minutes or so, and if I leave the PC on for 4 hours (for example) the noise never starts again. It's there solely when turning on the PC. I haven't got a UPS, and it's important to note that the computer was not on when the power went out - it was merely plugged in. I then promptly unplugged the PC once the power was out, and only plugged it in again when the power came back. Could it be the power supply? Unfortunately I can't open my tower as I would void the warranty. Are there any tests which I could carry out without voiding the warranty?
