  • Capturing and Transforming ASP.NET Output with Response.Filter

    - by Rick Strahl
During one of my Handlers and Modules session at DevConnections this week one of the attendees asked a question that I didn’t have an immediate answer for. Basically he wanted to capture response output completely and then apply some filtering to the output – effectively injecting some additional content into the page AFTER the page had completely rendered. Specifically the output should be captured from anywhere – not just a page and have this code injected into the page. Some time ago I posted some code that allows you to capture ASP.NET Page output by overriding the Render() method, capturing the HtmlTextWriter() and reading its content, modifying the rendered data as text then writing it back out. I’ve actually used this approach on a few occasions and it works fine for ASP.NET pages. But this obviously won’t work outside of the Page class environment and it’s not really generic – you have to create a custom page class in order to handle the output capture. [updated 11/16/2009 – updated ResponseFilterStream implementation and a few additional notes based on comments] Enter Response.Filter However, ASP.NET includes a Response.Filter which can be used – well to filter output. Basically Response.Filter is a stream through which the OutputStream is piped back to the Web Server (indirectly). As content is written into the Response object, the filter stream receives the appropriate Stream commands like Write, Flush and Close as well as read operations although for a Response.Filter that’s uncommon to be hit. The Response.Filter can be programmatically replaced at runtime which allows you to effectively intercept all output generation that runs through ASP.NET. A common Example: Dynamic GZip Encoding A rather common use of Response.Filter hooking up code based, dynamic  GZip compression for requests which is dead simple by applying a GZipStream (or DeflateStream) to Response.Filter. The following generic routines can be used very easily to detect GZip capability of the client and compress response output with a single line of code and a couple of library helper routines: WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); which is handled with a few lines of reusable code and a couple of static helper methods: /// <summary> ///Sets up the current page or handler to use GZip through a Response.Filter ///IMPORTANT:  ///You have to call this method before any output is generated! /// </summary> public static void GZipEncodePage() {     HttpResponse Response = HttpContext.Current.Response;     if(IsGZipSupported())     {         stringAcceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"];         if(AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate"))         {             Response.Filter = newSystem.IO.Compression.DeflateStream(Response.Filter,                                        System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress);             Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "deflate");         }         else        {             Response.Filter = newSystem.IO.Compression.GZipStream(Response.Filter,                                       System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress);             Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "gzip");                            }     }     // Allow proxy servers to cache encoded and unencoded versions separately    Response.AppendHeader("Vary", "Content-Encoding"); } /// <summary> /// Determines if GZip is supported /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public static bool IsGZipSupported() { string AcceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"]; if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(AcceptEncoding) && (AcceptEncoding.Contains("gzip") || AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate"))) return true; return false; } GZipStream and DeflateStream are streams that are assigned to Response.Filter and by doing so apply the appropriate compression on the active Response. Response.Filter content is chunked So to implement a Response.Filter effectively requires only that you implement a custom stream and handle the Write() method to capture Response output as it’s written. At first blush this seems very simple – you capture the output in Write, transform it and write out the transformed content in one pass. And that indeed works for small amounts of content. But you see, the problem is that output is written in small buffer chunks (a little less than 16k it appears) rather than just a single Write() statement into the stream, which makes perfect sense for ASP.NET to stream data back to IIS in smaller chunks to minimize memory usage en route. Unfortunately this also makes it a more difficult to implement any filtering routines since you don’t directly get access to all of the response content which is problematic especially if those filtering routines require you to look at the ENTIRE response in order to transform or capture the output as is needed for the solution the gentleman in my session asked for. So in order to address this a slightly different approach is required that basically captures all the Write() buffers passed into a cached stream and then making the stream available only when it’s complete and ready to be flushed. As I was thinking about the implementation I also started thinking about the few instances when I’ve used Response.Filter implementations. Each time I had to create a new Stream subclass and create my custom functionality but in the end each implementation did the same thing – capturing output and transforming it. I thought there should be an easier way to do this by creating a re-usable Stream class that can handle stream transformations that are common to Response.Filter implementations. Creating a semi-generic Response Filter Stream Class What I ended up with is a ResponseFilterStream class that provides a handful of Events that allow you to capture and/or transform Response content. The class implements a subclass of Stream and then overrides Write() and Flush() to handle capturing and transformation operations. By exposing events it’s easy to hook up capture or transformation operations via single focused methods. ResponseFilterStream exposes the following events: CaptureStream, CaptureString Captures the output only and provides either a MemoryStream or String with the final page output. Capture is hooked to the Flush() operation of the stream. TransformStream, TransformString Allows you to transform the complete response output with events that receive a MemoryStream or String respectively and can you modify the output then return it back as a return value. The transformed output is then written back out in a single chunk to the response output stream. These events capture all output internally first then write the entire buffer into the response. TransformWrite, TransformWriteString Allows you to transform the Response data as it is written in its original chunk size in the Stream’s Write() method. Unlike TransformStream/TransformString which operate on the complete output, these events only see the current chunk of data written. This is more efficient as there’s no caching involved, but can cause problems due to searched content splitting over multiple chunks. Using this implementation, creating a custom Response.Filter transformation becomes as simple as the following code. To hook up the Response.Filter using the MemoryStream version event: ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformStream += filter_TransformStream; Response.Filter = filter; and the event handler to do the transformation: MemoryStream filter_TransformStream(MemoryStream ms) { Encoding encoding = HttpContext.Current.Response.ContentEncoding; string output = encoding.GetString(ms.ToArray()); output = FixPaths(output); ms = new MemoryStream(output.Length); byte[] buffer = encoding.GetBytes(output); ms.Write(buffer,0,buffer.Length); return ms; } private string FixPaths(string output) { string path = HttpContext.Current.Request.ApplicationPath; // override root path wonkiness if (path == "/") path = ""; output = output.Replace("\"~/", "\"" + path + "/").Replace("'~/", "'" + path + "/"); return output; } The idea of the event handler is that you can do whatever you want to the stream and return back a stream – either the same one that’s been modified or a brand new one – which is then sent back to as the final response. The above code can be simplified even more by using the string version events which handle the stream to string conversions for you: ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformString += filter_TransformString; Response.Filter = filter; and the event handler to do the transformation calling the same FixPaths method shown above: string filter_TransformString(string output) { return FixPaths(output); } The events for capturing output and capturing and transforming chunks work in a very similar way. By using events to handle the transformations ResponseFilterStream becomes a reusable component and we don’t have to create a new stream class or subclass an existing Stream based classed. By the way, the example used here is kind of a cool trick which transforms “~/” expressions inside of the final generated HTML output – even in plain HTML controls not HTML controls – and transforms them into the appropriate application relative path in the same way that ResolveUrl would do. So you can write plain old HTML like this: <a href=”~/default.aspx”>Home</a>  and have it turned into: <a href=”/myVirtual/default.aspx”>Home</a>  without having to use an ASP.NET control like Hyperlink or Image or having to constantly use: <img src=”<%= ResolveUrl(“~/images/home.gif”) %>” /> in MVC applications (which frankly is one of the most annoying things about MVC especially given the path hell that extension-less and endpoint-less URLs impose). I can’t take credit for this idea. While discussing the Response.Filter issues on Twitter a hint from Dylan Beattie who pointed me at one of his examples which does something similar. I thought the idea was cool enough to use an example for future demos of Response.Filter functionality in ASP.NET next I time I do the Modules and Handlers talk (which was great fun BTW). How practical this is is debatable however since there’s definitely some overhead to using a Response.Filter in general and especially on one that caches the output and the re-writes it later. Make sure to test for performance anytime you use Response.Filter hookup and make sure it' doesn’t end up killing perf on you. You’ve been warned :-}. How does ResponseFilterStream work? The big win of this implementation IMHO is that it’s a reusable  component – so for implementation there’s no new class, no subclassing – you simply attach to an event to implement an event handler method with a straight forward signature to retrieve the stream or string you’re interested in. The implementation is based on a subclass of Stream as is required in order to handle the Response.Filter requirements. What’s different than other implementations I’ve seen in various places is that it supports capturing output as a whole to allow retrieving the full response output for capture or modification. The exception are the TransformWrite and TransformWrite events which operate only active chunk of data written by the Response. For captured output, the Write() method captures output into an internal MemoryStream that is cached until writing is complete. So Write() is called when ASP.NET writes to the Response stream, but the filter doesn’t pass on the Write immediately to the filter’s internal stream. The data is cached and only when the Flush() method is called to finalize the Stream’s output do we actually send the cached stream off for transformation (if the events are hooked up) and THEN finally write out the returned content in one big chunk. Here’s the implementation of ResponseFilterStream: /// <summary> /// A semi-generic Stream implementation for Response.Filter with /// an event interface for handling Content transformations via /// Stream or String. /// <remarks> /// Use with care for large output as this implementation copies /// the output into a memory stream and so increases memory usage. /// </remarks> /// </summary> public class ResponseFilterStream : Stream { /// <summary> /// The original stream /// </summary> Stream _stream; /// <summary> /// Current position in the original stream /// </summary> long _position; /// <summary> /// Stream that original content is read into /// and then passed to TransformStream function /// </summary> MemoryStream _cacheStream = new MemoryStream(5000); /// <summary> /// Internal pointer that that keeps track of the size /// of the cacheStream /// </summary> int _cachePointer = 0; /// <summary> /// /// </summary> /// <param name="responseStream"></param> public ResponseFilterStream(Stream responseStream) { _stream = responseStream; } /// <summary> /// Determines whether the stream is captured /// </summary> private bool IsCaptured { get { if (CaptureStream != null || CaptureString != null || TransformStream != null || TransformString != null) return true; return false; } } /// <summary> /// Determines whether the Write method is outputting data immediately /// or delaying output until Flush() is fired. /// </summary> private bool IsOutputDelayed { get { if (TransformStream != null || TransformString != null) return true; return false; } } /// <summary> /// Event that captures Response output and makes it available /// as a MemoryStream instance. if (!IsOutputDelayed) _stream.Write(buffer, offset, buffer.Length); } } The key features are the events and corresponding OnXXX methods that handle the event hookups, and the Write() and Flush() methods of the stream implementation. All the rest of the members tend to be plain jane passthrough stream implementation code without much consequence. I do love the way Action<t> and Func<T> make it so easy to create the event signatures for the various events – sweet. A few Things to consider Performance Response.Filter is not great for performance in general as it adds another layer of indirection to the ASP.NET output pipeline, and this implementation in particular adds a memory hit as it basically duplicates the response output into the cached memory stream which is necessary since you may have to look at the entire response. If you have large pages in particular this can cause potentially serious memory pressure in your server application. So be careful of wholesale adoption of this (or other) Response.Filters. Make sure to do some performance testing to ensure it’s not killing your app’s performance. Response.Filter works everywhere A few questions came up in comments and discussion as to capturing ALL output hitting the site and – yes you can definitely do that by assigning a Response.Filter inside of a module. If you do this however you’ll want to be very careful and decide which content you actually want to capture especially in IIS 7 which passes ALL content – including static images/CSS etc. through the ASP.NET pipeline. So it is important to filter only on what you’re looking for – like the page extension or maybe more effectively the Response.ContentType. Response.Filter Chaining Originally I thought that filter chaining doesn’t work at all due to a bug in the stream implementation code. But it’s quite possible to assign multiple filters to the Response.Filter property. So the following actually works to both compress the output and apply the transformed content: WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformString += filter_TransformString; Response.Filter = filter; However the following does not work resulting in invalid content encoding errors: ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformString += filter_TransformString; Response.Filter = filter; WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); In other words multiple Response filters can work together but it depends entirely on the implementation whether they can be chained or in which order they can be chained. In this case running the GZip/Deflate stream filters apparently relies on the original content length of the output and chokes when the content is modified. But if attaching the compression first it works fine as unintuitive as that may seem. • how do I access XHR responseBody from Javascript?

    - by Cheeso
I've got a web page that uses XMLHttpRequest to download a binary resource. Because it's binary I'm trying to use xhr.responseBody to access the bytes. I've seen a few posts suggesting that it's impossible to access the bytes directly from Javascript. This sounds crazy to me. Weirdly, xhr.responseBody is accessible from VBScript, so the suggestion is that I must define a method in VBScript in the webpage, and then call that method from Javascript. See jsdap for one example. var IE_HACK = (/msie/i.test(navigator.userAgent) && !/opera/i.test(navigator.userAgent)); if (IE_HACK) document.write('<script type="text/vbscript">\n\ Function BinaryToArray(Binary)\n\ Dim i\n\ ReDim byteArray(LenB(Binary))\n\ For i = 1 To LenB(Binary)\n\ byteArray(i-1) = AscB(MidB(Binary, i, 1))\n\ Next\n\ BinaryToArray = byteArray\n\ End Function\n\ </script>'); var xml = (window.XMLHttpRequest) ? new XMLHttpRequest() // Mozilla/Safari/IE7+ : (window.ActiveXObject) ? new ActiveXObject("MSXML2.XMLHTTP") // IE6 : null; // Commodore 64? xml.open("GET", url, true); if (xml.overrideMimeType) { xml.overrideMimeType('text/plain; charset=x-user-defined'); } else { xml.setRequestHeader('Accept-Charset', 'x-user-defined'); } xml.onreadystatechange = function() { if (xml.readyState == 4) { if (!binary) { callback(xml.responseText); } else if (IE_HACK) { // call a VBScript method to copy every single byte callback(BinaryToArray(xml.responseBody).toArray()); } else { callback(getBuffer(xml.responseText)); } } }; xml.send(''); Is this really true? The best way? copying every byte? For a large binary stream that's not gonna be very efficient. There is also a possible technique using ADODB.Stream, which is a COM equivalent of a MemoryStream. See here for an example. It does not require VBScript but does require a separate COM object. if (typeof (ActiveXObject) != "undefined" && typeof (httpRequest.responseBody) != "undefined") { // Convert httpRequest.responseBody byte stream to shift_jis encoded string var stream = new ActiveXObject("ADODB.Stream"); stream.Type = 1; // adTypeBinary stream.Open (); stream.Write (httpRequest.responseBody); stream.Position = 0; stream.Type = 1; // adTypeBinary; stream.Read.... /// ???? what here } I don't think that's gonna work - ADODB.Stream is disabled on most machines these days. In The IE8 developer tools - the IE equivalent of Firebug - I can see the responseBody is an array of bytes and I can even see the bytes themselves. The data is right there. I don't understand why I can't get to it. Is it possible for me to read it with responseText? hints? (other than defining a VBScript method)

  • Search multiple datepicker on same grid

    - by DHF
I'm using multiple datepicker on same grid and I face the problem to get a proper result. I used 3 datepicker in 1 grid. Only the first datepicker (Order Date)is able to output proper result while the other 2 datepicker (Start Date & End Date) are not able to generate proper result. There is no problem with the query, so could you find out what's going on here? • Calling Web Services in classic ASP

    - by cabhilash
Last day my colleague asked me the provide her a solution to call the Web service from classic ASP. (Yes Classic ASP. still people are using this :D ) We can call web service SOAP toolkit also. But invoking the service using the XMLHTTP object was more easier & fast. To create the Service I used the normal Web Service in .Net 2.0 with [Webmethod] public class WebService1 : System.Web.Services.WebService { [WebMethod] public string HelloWorld(string name){return name + " Pay my dues :) "; // a reminder to pay my consultation fee :D} } In Web.config add the following entry in System.web<webServices><protocols><add name="HttpGet"/><add name="HttpPost"/></protocols></webServices> Alternatively, you can enable these protocols for all Web services on the computer by editing the <protocols> section in Machine.config. The following example enables HTTP GET, HTTP POST, and also SOAP and HTTP POST from localhost: <protocols> <add name="HttpSoap"/> <add name="HttpPost"/> <add name="HttpGet"/> <add name="HttpPostLocalhost"/> <!-- Documentation enables the documentation/test pages --> <add name="Documentation"/> </protocols> By adding these entries I am enabling the HTTPGET & HTTPPOST (After .Net 1.1 by default HTTPGET & HTTPPOST is disabled because of security concerns)The .NET Framework 1.1 defines a new protocol that is named HttpPostLocalhost. By default, this new protocol is enabled. This protocol permits invoking Web services that use HTTP POST requests from applications on the same computer. This is true provided the POST URL uses http://localhost, not http://hostname. This permits Web service developers to use the HTML-based test form to invoke the Web service from the same computer where the Web service resides. Classic ASP Code to call Web service <%Option Explicit Dim objRequest, objXMLDoc, objXmlNode Dim strRet, strError, strNome Dim strName strName= "deepa" Set objRequest = Server.createobject("MSXML2.XMLHTTP") With objRequest .open "GET", "http://localhost:3106/WebService1.asmx/HelloWorld?name=" & strName, False .setRequestHeader "Content-Type", "text/xml" .setRequestHeader "SOAPAction", "http://localhost:3106/WebService1.asmx/HelloWorld" .send End With Set objXMLDoc = Server.createobject("MSXML2.DOMDocument") objXmlDoc.async = false Response.ContentType = "text/xml" Response.Write(objRequest.ResponseText) %> In Line 6 I created an MSXML XMLHTTP object. Line 9 Using the HTTPGET protocol I am openinig connection to WebService Line 10:11 – setting the Header for the service In line 15, I am getting the output from the webservice in XML Doc format & reading the responseText(line 18). In line 9 if you observe I am passing the parameter strName to the Webservice You can pass multiple parameters to the Web service by just like any other QueryString Parameters. In similar fashion you can invoke the Web service using HTTPPost. Only you have to ensure that the form contains all th required parameters for webmethod.  Happy coding !!!!!!!

  • Extjs to call a RESTful webservice

    - by VSC
Hello, I am trying to make a RESTful webservice call using Extjs. Below is the code i am using: Ext.Ajax.request({ url: incomingURL , method: 'POST', params: {param1:p1, param2:p2}, success: function(responseObject){ var obj = Ext.decode(responseObject.responseText); alert(obj); }, failure: function(responseObject){ var obj = Ext.decode(responseObject.responseText); alert(obj); } }); but it does not work, the request is sent using OPTIONS method instead of POST. I also tried to do the same thing using below code but result is the same: var conn = new Ext.data.Connection(); conn.request({ url: incomingURL, method: 'POST', params: {param1:p1, param2:p2}, success: function(responseObject) { Ext.Msg.alert('Status', 'success'); }, failure: function(responseObject) { Ext.Msg.alert('Status', 'Failure'); } }); But when i tried to do the same thing using basic ajax call ( using the browser objects directly i.e. XMLHttpRequest() or ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP")) it works fine and i get the response as expected. Can anyone please help me, as i am not able to understand what i am doing wrong with extjs ajax call?

  • JSON/PrototypeJS - why does this only work SOMETIMES?

    - by koko
    This is driving me nuts! I'm getting some JSON from my server: {"id262":{"done":null,"status":null,"verfall":null,"id":262,"bid":20044,"art":"owner","uid":"demo02","aktion":null,"termin_datum":null,"docid":null,"gruppenid":null,"news":"newsstring","datum":"11.06.2010","header":"headerstring","for_uid":"demo01"}, "id263":{"done":null,"status":"pending","verfall":null,"bid":20044,"id":263,"uid":"demo02","art":"foo","aktion":"dosomething","termin_datum":"11.06.2010","docid":null,"gruppenid":null,"datum":"11.06.2010","news":"newsstring","for_uid":"demo01","header":"headerstring"}, "id261":{"done":null,"status":null,"verfall":null,"id":261,"bid":20044,"art":"termin","uid":"demo02","aktion":null,"termin_datum":"25.06.2010","docid":null,"gruppenid":null,"news":"newsstring","datum":"11.06.2010","header":"headerstring","for_uid":null}} This is how my JS looks like: var user = 'demo02'; new Ajax.Request('myscript.pl?someparameter=value', { method:'get', onSuccess: function(transport){ var db_json = transport.responseText.evalJSON(), propCount = 0, someArray1 = [], someArray2 = [], otherArray = []; //JSON DEBUG console.log('validated string:'); console.log(transport.responseText.evalJSON(true)); for(var prop in db_json) { propCount++; if ( (db_json[prop].art == 'foo') && (db_json[prop].for_uid == user) ) { someArray1.push(db_json[prop]); } else if( (db_json[prop].art == 'foo') && (db_json[prop].uid == user) ) { someArray2.push(db_json[prop]); } else if( db_json[prop].art == 'log' ) { otherArray.push(db_json[prop]); } } if(someArray1.length>0) { someArray1.map(function(el){ $('someArray1target').innerHTML += el.done; //do more stuff }); } if(someArray2.length>0) { someArray2.map(function(el){ $('someArray2target').innerHTML += el.done; //do more stuff }); } }); Sometimes, it works perfectly. Sometimes, i get my JSON String (it appears in Firebug's "answer"-tab), but it won't log the JSON in console-log(). I'm not getting any errors and javascript is still working. Next time after reloading, it might work, but it might not. I cannot remotely imagine why this only happens sometimes!

    For some reason the function is freezing along with firefox until it fully retrieve the stream from requested site. Is there any mechanism to prevent freezing, so it works as expected? in XUL <statusbarpanel id="eee_label" tooltip="eee_tooltip" onclick="eee.retrieve_rate(event);"/> Javascript retrieve_rate: function(e) { var ajax = null; ajax = new XMLHttpRequest(); ajax.open('GET', 'http://site.com', false); ajax.onload = function() { if (ajax.status == 200) { var regexp = /blabla/g; var match = regexp.exec(ajax.responseText); while (match != null) { window.dump('Currency: ' + match[1] + ', Rate: ' + match[2] + ', Change: ' + match[3] + "\n"); if(match[1] == "USD") rate_USD = sprintf("%s:%s", match[1], match[2]); if(match[1] == "EUR") rate_EUR = sprintf("%s:%s", match[1], match[2]); if(match[1] == "RUB") rate_RUB = sprintf("%s/%s", match[1], match[2]); match = regexp.exec(ajax.responseText); } var rate = document.getElementById('eee_label'); rate.label = rate_USD + " " + rate_EUR + " " + rate_RUB; } else { } }; ajax.send(); I tried to put window.dump() right after ajax.send() and it dumped in the console also after the request is completed.

  • IdHTTP XML, getting xml, help please

    - by user1748535
Already some day I can not solve the problem. Help than you can. I'm using Delphi 2010, and I can not get through IdHTTP XML document from the site. I always had the answer 403 / HTTP 1.1 and text/html (need text/xml) When using MSXML all well and getting XML file. But I need a proxy, so need idhtop. When using the synapse does not change. Work with msxml: CoInitialize(nil); GetXML:={$IFDEF VER210}CoXMLHTTP{$ELSE}CoXMLHTTPRequest{$ENDIF}.Create; GetXML.open('POST', '***************', false, EmptyParam, EmptyParam); GetXML.setRequestHeader('Host', '***************'); GetXML.setRequestHeader('User-Agent', 'Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6.13'); GetXML.setRequestHeader('Content-Type', 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded'); GamesBody:='***************'; GetXML.send(GamesBody); Form1.Memo2.Lines.Text:=GetXML.responseText; ResultPage:=GetXML.responseText; if Pos('error code', ResultPage)=0 then begin CoUninitialize; how to set up IdHTTP? All settings have changed 100 times Or a connection to a proxy MSXML?

  • Retrieving image from database using Ajax

    - by ama
I'm trying to read image from database with Ajax, but I could not read the xmlhttp.responseText to the img src. The image is saved as binary data in database and also retrieved as binary data. I'm using Ajax in JSP, because I want to give the user the ability to upload images and I will view the last uploaded image, on mouse over action the Ajax will be activated and get the image back, the problem is in reading the img from the response. This is the Ajax function: function ajaxFunction(path) { if (xmlhttp) { var s = path; xmlhttp.open("GET", s, true); xmlhttp.onreadystatechange = handleServerResponse; xmlhttp.send(null); } } function handleServerResponse() { if (xmlhttp.readyState == 4) { var Image = document.getElementById(Image_Element_Name); document.getElementById(Image_Element_Name).src = "data:" + xmlhttp.responseText; } } I also got exception in the server: 10415315 [TP-Processor1] WARN core.MsgContext - Error sending end packet java.net.SocketException: Broken pipe at java.net.SocketOutputStream.socketWrite0(Native Method) at java.net.SocketOutputStream.socketWrite(SocketOutputStream.java:92) at java.net.SocketOutputStream.write(SocketOutputStream.java:136) at org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket.send(ChannelSocket.java:537) at org.apache.jk.common.JkInputStream.endMessage(JkInputStream.java:127) at org.apache.jk.core.MsgContext.action(MsgContext.java:302) at org.apache.coyote.Response.action(Response.java:183) at org.apache.coyote.Response.finish(Response.java:305) at org.apache.catalina.connector.OutputBuffer.close(OutputBuffer.java:281) at org.apache.catalina.connector.Response.finishResponse(Response.java:478) at org.apache.catalina.connector.CoyoteAdapter.service(CoyoteAdapter.java:154) at org.apache.jk.server.JkCoyoteHandler.invoke(JkCoyoteHandler.java:200) at org.apache.jk.common.HandlerRequest.invoke(HandlerRequest.java:283) at org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket.invoke(ChannelSocket.java:773) at org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket.processConnection(ChannelSocket.java:703) at org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket$SocketConnection.runIt(ChannelSocket.java:895) at org.apache.tomcat.util.threads.ThreadPool$ControlRunnable.run(ThreadPool.java:685) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619) 10415316 [TP-Processor1] WARN common.ChannelSocket - processCallbacks status 2

  • Retrieve JSON with stackoverflow API

    - by ArtWorkAD
Hi, I want to retrieve the information of my stackoverflow profile as JSON using the api. So I use this link http:/api.stackoverflow.com/1.0/users/401025/. But when I make the request I get a file containing the JSON data. How do I deal with that file using javascript? Here is my code (http://jsfiddle.net/hJhfU/2/): <html> <head> <script> var req; getReputation(); function getReputation(){ req = new XMLHttpRequest(); req.open('GET', 'http://api.stackoverflow.com/1.0/users/401025/'); req.onreadystatechange = processUser; req.send(); } function processUser(){ var res = JSON.parse(req.responseText); alert('test'); } </script> </head> The alert is never fired and req.responseText seems to be empty. Any ideas?

  • Jquery and Ajax Post issue

    - by Jerry
Hello guys I am trying to add a click event on the element that is return from the server via ajax. Apparently, I have to attached my js file inside my return response instead of my main script. Is this the best practice? Do I have to create the separated js file to add event on the return text?? Example: My Jquery - selectWeek.js $(document).ready(function(){ //handle ajax.. var url="sendSchedule.php"; $.post( url, {week:input}, function(responseText){ $("#ajax").html(responseText); }, "html" ); // click on #add button $("#add").click(function(){ //do something return false; }); }); My main page <script type="text/javascript" src="JS/selectWeek.js"></script> </HEAD> <BODY> //the code that trigger ajax is omitted <div id=ajax> //the response text will be inserted here </div> </BODY> </HTML> response from the server // display html (omit) // Do I have to attach the same js file to let #add listen the event? <script type="text/javascript" src="JS/selectWeek.js"></script> <form> <input type='button' id='add' value='add'/> </form> I am not sure if i make my question clear. I want to know if I need to add events on the return text. Do I have to add js file link on the return text or there is a way to do it on the main page. Thanks for any reply.

  • Preserve whitespace and formatting for text returned from $.get jquery call

    - by desigeek
I have a jquery $.get() call in my app that requests an entire web page. In the callback function, I access a div in the returned page, get its data and show it on my page. The problem is that the text I get from the div does not preserve the source formatting. If the div in the requested page had say an ordered list, then when i get that text and display on my page, it shows up as a paragraph with items inline instead of being shown as a list. I do not know whether the problem is how $.get() is getting the data or in my displaying of the data. //get the page $.get($(this).attr('href'), function(data){ callbackFunc(data,myLink); }, "html"); function callbackFunc(responseText, customData){ //response has bg color of #DFDFDF var td = $("td[bgcolor='#DFDFDF']", responseText); //text to show is in div of that td var forumText = $('div', td).text(); //append new row with request data below the current row in my table var currentRow = $(customData).parent('td').parent('tr'); var toAppend = "<tr><td class='myTd' colspan='3'>" + forumText + "</td></tr>"; $(currentRow).after(toAppend); } The response data shows up like ABC in the new row I add to my div while the source page div had A B C I should add that this script is part of an extension for Google Chrome so that is my only browser that I have tested on

  • can javascript process binary data?

    - by Johnny
admit me describe my questions in situation-oriented way: assume IE is still the dominate web browser(the firefox have document for binary processing): the XMLHttpRequest.responseText or XMLHttpRequest.responseXML in ie desire txt or xml/xhtml/html,but what about the server response the xmlHttprequest whith MIME TYPE application/octet ? would the response string all little than 256 ?(every char of that string < 256), thanks very much for a straight answer, i have no webserver env,so i don't know how to test it out. because use txt or xml have a issue of character set encode, and i don't know how to process #[[[CDDATA node of one encoded xml(ex : utf-8,ascii,gb18030) with javascript, when i getNodeText, does the docObj return me byte or decoded char ? if it was decoded char which according to the header indicated charSet in the httpresponse , it would be all wrong. to avoid mess up with charSet ,i would like the server to response octet data and force strings data to be encoded as utf-8 but another charSet in the binary format. if the response is octal, so i guess the browser would not try to decode the response"txt" does this weird? or miss understanding the fundamental things? EDIT: I believe the question is asking this: Can Javascript safely process strings that aren't encoded in Unicode? What are the problems with trying to do so? EDIT: no no no , i means if http-header: content-type is "application/octet" , would the ie try to decoded it as (16bits Unicode | ie local setting charset ) when i get XMLHttpRequestobj.responseText use javascript ? or it(ie) just wrap every single byte of the response body as a javascript string, then every char in that string little than or equal 256 (char<=256), am i talking Mars language? sadly, if i were Marsizen,i would come as tourist without fuzzy questions. however i am in a country which share at least one property with Mars : RED

  • Jquery cant get facebox working inside ajax call

    - by John
From my main page I call an ajax file via jquery, in that ajax file is some additional jquery code. Original link looks like this: <a href="/page1.php" class="guest-action notify-function"><img src="/icon1.png"></a> Then the code: $(document).ready(function(){ $('a[rel*=facebox]').facebox(); $('.guest-action').click( function() { $.get( $(this).attr('href'), function(responseText) { $.jGrowl(responseText); }); return false; }); $('.notify-function').click( function() { $(this).find('img').attr('src','/icon2.png'); $(this).attr('href','/page2.php'); $(this).removeClass('guest-action').removeClass('notify-function').attr('rel','facebox'); }); }); So basically after notify-function is clicked I am changing the icon and the url of the link, I then am removing the classes so that the click wont be ran again and add rel="facebox" to the link so that the facebox window will pop up if they try to click the new icon2.png that shows up. The problem is after I click the initial icon everything works just fine except when I try to click the new icon2.png it still executes the jgrowl code from the guest-action. But when I view the source it shows this: <a href="/page2.php" rel="facebox" class=""><img src="/icon2.png"></a> So it seemed that should work right? What am I doing wrong? I tried adding the facebox code to the main page that is calling the ajax file as well and still same issue.

  • How to implement a 'safe' periodical executer without using the Rails helpers?

    - by Robbie
I am very new to Ruby on Rails and was never really big on writing JavaScript, so the built in helpers were like a tiny silce of heaven. However I have recently learned that using the helper methods creates "obtrusive javascript" so I am doing a tiny bit of refactoring to get all this messy code out of my view. I'm also using the Prototype API to figure out what all these functions do. Right now, I have: <%= periodically_call_remote(:url => {:action => "tablerefresh", :id => 1 }, :frequency => '5', :complete => "load('26', 'table1', request.responseText)")%> Which produces: <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ new PeriodicalExecuter(function() {new Ajax.Request('/qrpsdrail/grids/tablerefresh/1', {asynchronous:true, evalScripts:true, onComplete:function(request){load('26', 'table1', request.responseText)}, parameters:'authenticity_token=' + encodeURIComponent('dfG7wWyVYEpelfdZvBWk7MlhzZoK7VvtT/HDi3w7gPM=')})}, 5) //]]> </script> My concern is that the "encodeURIComponent" and the presence of "authenticity_token" are generated by Rails. I'm assuming these are used to assure the validity of a request. (Ensuring a request comes from a currently active session?) If that is the case, how can I implement this in application.js 'safely'? It seems that the built in method, although obtrusive, does add some beneficial security. Thanks, in advance, to all who answer.

  • javascript read a text file

I have looked everywhere and surprisingly can't find a good solution to this! I've got the following code that is supposed to read a text file and display it's contents. But it's not reading, for some reason. Am I doing something wrong? FTR, I can't use PHP for this. It's gotta be Javascript. var txtFile = new XMLHttpRequest(); txtFile.open("GET", "http://www.mysite.com/todaysTrivia.txt", true); txtFile.send(null); txtFile.onreadystatechange = function() { if (txtFile.readyState == 4) { // Makes sure the document is ready to parse. alert(txtFile.responseText+" - "+txtFile.status); //if (txtFile.status === 200) { // Makes sure it's found the file. var doc = document.getElementById("Trivia-Widget"); if (doc) { doc.innerHTML = txtFile.responseText ; } //} } txtFile.send(null); } Any good ideas what I'm doing wrong? It just keeps givimg me a zero status.

  • Need help with jQuery/AJAX call in Safari/Mac

    - by protohominid
I've got something that works perfectly in FF and MSIE but it's not working properly in Safari. It's a form with selects that get updated via AJAX/jQuery from a MySQL DB. In Safari, when you select the first item, it correctly loads the options for the next select menu; however, when you choose one of those (which loads new options in a subsequent select menu), the whole form resets and is broken from that point on. Does anyone know of a Safari bug that would cause this? Here's the JS: $(document).ready(function(){ $("#searchForm select").change(updateSearchForm); }); function updateSearchForm() { $.ajax({ url: '/elements/search_form.php?ajax=true', data: $('#searchForm').serialize(), error:function(xhr, err){ alert("readyState: "+xhr.readyState+"\nstatus: "+xhr.status); alert("responseText: "+xhr.responseText); }, success: function(data) { $("#searchForm").html(data); $("#searchForm select").change(updateSearchForm); } }); } I can post the relevant PHP/HTML for the form, but it's lengthy. I'm relatively new to JS so I'm not sure where to start debugging this... TIA

It's basically a widget that other folks can put on their own websites that grabs a line of text from my website and displays it on theirs. The problem is that it really can't be server-side since I've got zero control over everyone else's sites that use this.

  • Javascript document.open asynchronous?

    - by Alex Schneider
So on my site there is a Javascript function that will load a new site from the server via XMLHttpRequest. After that it replaces the current page with the new one: var post = new XMLHttpRequest(); post.open('POST', data); post.onload = function() { var do = document.open("text/html", "replace"); do.write(post.responseText); do.close(); goOn(); } function goOn() { console.log($('img:visible')); } Some could assume that after do.close() the document has changed and is ready. But it is not, e.g. if i load very much/big data/responseText the function goOn() only logs an empty result. Obviously goOn() gets in that case called before the DOM is ready to be read! Unfortunately the is no "ready" event fired after write() finished.... How can i be sure it is finished? /EDIT: goOn() logs this to Chrome Console: [prevObject: p.fn.p.init[1], context: #document, selector: "img:visible"] context: #document length: 0 prevObject: p.fn.p.init[1] selector: "img:visible" __proto__: Object[0] But if i right after that type $('img:visible') into console manually it shows me all images....
