  • Simple 2d game pathfinding

    - by Kooi Nam Ng
So I was trying to implement a simple pathfinding on iOS and but the outcome seems less satisfactory than what I intended to achieve. The thing is units in games like Warcraft and Red Alert move in all direction whereas units in my case only move in at most 8 directions as these 8 directions direct to the next available node. What should I do in order to achieve the result as stated above?Shrink the tile size? The screenshot intended for illustration. Those rocks are the obstacles whereas the both ends of the green path are the starting and end of the path. The red line is the path that I want to achieve. http://i.stack.imgur.com/lr19c.jpg

  • How to Install the MATE Desktop & Go Back to GNOME 2 on Ubuntu

    - by Chris Hoffman
If you long for the days of GNOME 2 and just can’t get along with Unity or GNOME 3, MATE is here to save you. It’s an actively developed fork of GNOME 2, and it’s easily installable on Ubuntu. MATE isn’t available in Ubuntu’s repositories, but the MATE developers offer an official repository for Ubuntu. Unlike some methods that recommend you use Linux Mint’s repository on Ubuntu, this won’t mess up your system. • Geek Deal: Refurbished Kindle Fire for $139; Today Only

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you’re looking to pick up a Kindle Fire on the cheap, Amazon is offering them–refurbished with a 1-year warranty–for $139. $139 is an even better price than we see on our local Craiglist (where Kindle Fires usually go for $180 or so) and it comes with a 1-year warranty. We’ve purchased several Kindle Keyboard units through Amazon’s refurbished warehouse deals over the last two years and, frankly, we can’t tell them apart from the brand new ones–if you’re looking to pick up a Kindle Fire this is a great deal. • Starting it back up again

    - by Mickey Gousset
After a couple of year hiatus from blogging at Geeks With Blogs, I’m back!  I’m still blogging about Visual Studio 2010 and TFS 2010 over at Team System Rocks (soon to undergo some major revisions), so expect to see some cross postings from there. Here though, I expect to focus on System Center technologies (mostly System Center Operations Manager and System Center Service Manager, with some of the others thrown in there too, as that is my day job now..  I’ll also use this blog to start tracking my foray into Windows Phone 7 development.  I’ve decided to go the game programming route first.

  • BlissControl Is a Settings Management Dashboard for Popular Social Networks

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
BlissControl is a simple web app that organizes the different settings menus of over a dozen social networks and services into a streamlined dashboard to help you change your profile pic, privacy settings, and more. Much like previously reviewed NotificationControl and MyPermissions (which help you check and set email notifications and app permissions, respectively), BlissControl also takes the very convoluted menus of web-apps and social media sites and makes them super easy to navigate. You can easily click right through the page you need on Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and more–you’ll no longer need to visit each service and click through a maze of menus to get to the right place to change your password or swap your profile pic. BlissControl is simply a dashboard that directs you to the appropriate page within the service you already use–you never share your login credentials with BlissControl. Hit up the link below to take it for a spin. • The Internet from a 1990s Point of View [Video]

    - by Asian Angel
Are you ready for a retro look at the Internet? Then prepare to journey back in time to 1995 with this video and its view of the early days of the Internet. From YouTube: Trine Gallegos hosts this segment shot in 1995 when the Internet was first becoming an icon. This is an interesting look back at how clunky the applications were. I don’t even think they were using a computer mouse yet. • 6 Great Alternative Browsers for Your Android Device

    - by Chris Hoffman
Android’s default browser, named “Internet,” is a very simple browser that’s tied to your Android OS version. Other, third-party browsers offer more powerful interfaces, greater configurability, and more frequent updates. Unlike on Apple’s iOS, Android browsers can implement their own rendering engines, although not all do. That Firefox app isn’t just a shell over the stock browser, like it is on iOS – it brings Mozilla’s Gecko to Android. • Use open-source programs in your company?

    - by eversor
Is there any cons of making your employees use open-source programs in your company? I am planning to start a bussiness and I wonder why companies usually work with proprietary software, as Microsoft Word to quote the most famous one. Why do not they use Open Office (or Libre Office) etc.? From my point of view, you can save a lot of money and help the open-source community by, for instance, giving them part of your benefits in form of donations. I do not know any (medium-big) company that does this. Probably you could give me some examples, just to prove that this model of open-source usage/collaboration works rocks.

If I counted correctly, there are 173(!) videos from this year’s conference, and a total of 467 videos from this and previous years. I’ve watched a lot of sessions from the major conferences that include .NET material, and NDC consistently has the best presentations in my opinion. There are lots of my favorite speakers: Crockford, Uncle Bob, Damian Edwards, Venkat Subramanian, Hanselman (I’m interested in seeing if he still thinks “poop” is funny, or got that out of his system at TechEd ;), Cory House (hey, KC!), the .NET Rocks Guys and more, so check it out!

  • Google I/O 2012 - High Performance HTML5

Google I/O 2012 - High Performance HTML5 For years we built web apps that far outpaced the capabilities of the browsers they ran in. Just as the browsers were catching up HTML5 came on the scene - video and audio, canvas, SVG, app cache, localStorage, @font-face, and more. Now the browsers are racing to stay ahead of the wave that's building as developers adopt these new capabilities. Is your HTML5 app going to ride the wave or be dashed on the rocks leaving users stranded? Learn which HTML5 features to seek out and which to avoid when it comes to building fast HTML5 web apps. This session will be live captioned. From: GoogleDevelopers Views: 91 1 ratings Time: 01:02:07 More in Science & Technology

  • How can I get textures on edge of walls like in Super Metroid and Aquaria?

    - by meds
Games like Super Metroid and Aquaria present the terrain with the other facing parts having rocks and stuff while deeper behind them (i.e. underground) there's different detail or just black. I would like to do something similar using polygons. Terrain is created in my current level as a set of overlapping square boxes. I'm not sure if this rendering method will work such a system for creating terrain but if anyone has ideas I'd love to hear them. Otherwise I'd like to know how I should re-write the terrain rendering system so it actually works to draw terrain in this manner...

  • What Easter Eggs have you placed in code?

    - by Scott
I know it is illegal to place Easter eggs in code via Microsoft's quarrel with the law a few years back. Microsoft has decided that if you place Easter eggs in code, it is an immediate grounds for termination, but they are still out there in the wild. I know I put my name in the code a lot that will never show up to the users, but it is always fun to do. So, what Easter eggs have you seen or placed in your programs/code? One of mine was: Query = [Current_Step] = 'Scott Rocks'
