I would like to know if Apple Magic Mouse works on Windows 7 (x86/x64) on non-Apple computers.
Here are some checklists:
x64 compatibility
left click
right click
middle button?
vertical scroll
horizontal scroll
bind additional gestures to keystrokes?
are any usage problems?
In case it works please advise on how to get the drivers.
Hi!
I have a website that I will be hosting DNS for (testing purposes at first and then it will have some limited traffic).
I have set up DNS so that site.tld has an A record to the actual IP but I don't know what to do about www.site.tld.
Both site.tld and www.site.tld will point to the same server / application so my logic tells me to add a cname record so that www.site.tld becomes an alias for site.tld,
BUT, I've been checking my settings with intodns.com and if I only add a CNAME for the www.site.tld it gives me the following error:
ERROR: I could not get any A records for www.cexa.ro!
(the error clears once I do an A record for www.site.tld to point to the actual IP)
I don't know if there is a "rule" that "www." should always be an A record even though it's actually pointing to the same IP / application.
Thanks for helping me understand this!
I installed MacPorts on OS X 10.5 and I found out that when I connect to the computer using SSH and use mc - Midnight Commander - the HOME and END keys do not work.
I have to mention that I'm using putty and I am able to use the keyboard very well on Linux machines like Fedora, Ubuntu,...
Here is putty keyboard configuration (a configuration I found to be optimal over time):
Backspace key: 127
Home/End keys: Standard
Function keys: Xterm R6
Cursor keys: Normal
Numpad: normal
Terminal type string: xterm-color
I'm looking for a command line solution/script that does these changes, this make much easier to create a prepare OS script for configuring a new OS.
I'm looking for a small WiFi router that I could use to create my own wireless network when I travel.
I'm also interested in a router that has very good signal/antenna and that is easy to take with you.
I'm using Windows x64 and I'm not able to make msysgit to work using pagent authentication.
Here are some details:
Putty is working without pagent without any problems.
I have only one key loaded in pagent
SSH auth using putty to [email protected] works (not shell allowed)
The problem is that:
plink -v -a -ssh [email protected] git version
FATAL ERROR: Network error: Connection timed out
I would like to know if by cutting a micro-SIM in order to bring it to a SIM size it will be possible to use it in a iPad.
Please advice only if you tried and failed or succeeded. Not in theory.
How can someone connect to a VM console via SSH, without being an admin on VM-host.
This means that you should be able to see the guest boot screen and grub menu in a ssh session.
That's important because in some cases you may need to fix the VM without having access to the VM-host admin console.
Mainly this is about how you can have your own VM-guest which you can fully control but without having access to VM-host.
Every time I initiate an ssh connection from my Mac to a Linux (Debian) I do get this warning:
No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.
This also happens for tools that are using ssh, like git or mercurial.
I just want to make a local change to my system in order to prevent this from appearing.
Note: I do have X11 server (XQuartz 2.7.3 (xorg-server 1.12.4)) on my Mac OS X (10.8.1) and it is working properly, I can successfully start clock locally or remotely.

I have the different versions of the same application added several times in the dock but the application icon and title is identical.
I cannot change the icon or the file name because they are recreated each time I rebuild.
OS X is displaying only the application name as a tooltip not the path.
Is there a solution for this problem?
I just want to setup a system wide environment variable, JAVA_HOME for all users, including root user.
Requirements:
accessible to normal users
accessible to root
always loaded, not only for bash (gnome-terminal does not start a bash by default)
to work on Ubuntu, Debian and optionally Red Hat
great if addition could be easily scripted
So far here is the no-list:
/etc/profile.d/java.sh - not executed if you start a new console from gnome-terminal
/etc/profile - same as above
~/.profile - current user only, also any solution assuming ~ would not be acceptable because home directory could be on NIS, and JAVA_HOME could be different.
I want to save a program's output (stdout) to a file but still be able to see the output on the screen in realtime.
I need a solutions for both Linux and Windows.
I discovered that when I do ssh to a machine using OS X 10.6 and use mc I do not see the graphical line drawing characters.
This does not happen if I open terminal and start mc.
I'm connecting using putty configured to use xterm-color, configuraton that works just fine if I do ssh to a linux machine.
The mc from OS X is version 4.7.0 (installed using macports).
What locale returns:
LC_CTYPE="C" <== ssh
LC_CTYPE="UTF-8" <== Terminal.app
ssh: mc display bits shows: 7-bit ASCII (changing does not help, it defaults to the same value)
Terminal.app: mc display bits shows: UTF-8
The environment shows TERM=xterm-color in both cases Terminal.app and ss but mc looks different.
I filed a bug to mc with this information at http://www.midnight-commander.org/ticket/2339
I have a problem with my Ubuntu 11.04 installation. I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 from Windows, it worked fine for days, but today it won't boot.
When I start the machine, GRUB loads. There is the Windows 7 loader, I select Ubuntu from there and after that, I should see the Ubuntu GRUB menu, where I'd select the mode to boot Ubuntu. However, I can't see that anymore. I directly get to a GRUB terminal.
Can anyone help me with this? How would I recover my data or reset the boot loader?
I do have my work laptop at home and I want to share an USB printer in order to be able to print to it from my MacBook.
Currently Windows 7 is refusing to share the printer because the computer is part of a domain and it tells me that I need to join a homegroup in order to be able to do that. Also it tells me that he cannot create this homegroup and this group has to be create by another Windows 7 computer from my network. As you can imagine I do have only one Windows computer on my home network.
How can I solve this problem?
I wasn't able to activate my gizmo5 number because Google Voice activation(verification) requires you to enter two dial tones (DTMF) and they did not work at least not with these two variants:
Using gizmo5 PC client
using fring from Iphone as gizmo5 SIP client
Redirecting gizmo5 to a US mobile number
None of the above methods worked for me. Any ideas?

I am looking for a single line that does return the pid of a running process.
Currently I have:
ps -A -o pid,cmd|grep xxx|head -n 1
And this returns the fist pid, command. I need only the first number from the output and ignore the rest. I suppose sed or awk would help here but my experience with them is limited.
Also, this has another problem, it will return the pid of grep if the xxx is not running.
It's really important to have a single line, as I want to reuse the output for doing something else, like killing that process.

I would like to know how to disable and enable Microsoft Security Essentials from the command line.
This is a common procedure on build machines in order to speed-up the build process.
I want to be able to open Excel XML files in Excel but without assigning XML directly to Excel. There are lots of XML files that are not Excel files and I don't want to open all of them in Excel.
The file has proper header for opening in Excel but currently it does open Internet Explorer that asks me if I want to open the file with Excel, save or cancel. I just want to open it without two another annoying windows.
I do have a third party product (Jira) that has Active Directory integration via LDAP.
I want to enable Jira administrators to edit group memberships and have them syncronized inside Active Directory.
This currently works but I needed to use a Domain Administrator service account in order to do this.
The question is how can I do this without giving the entire Domain Administrator permission to the service account.
Here is the following use case: wanting to ssh server1 in 3 scenarios:
server1 is on current network, go for it
server1 is not on current network and you need to use a gateway (gw1) to access it, not a big problem as you can use ~/.ssh/config to define tunnelling for this
you are on a network that does not allow you to access the first gw1, so you'll use gw2 for that.
Desired outcome: be able to use the same command and be able to connect to the server.
I have a range of cells and I want a formula that says if all these contains the same values or not.
Usually for two cells I would use if but I want a solution that would work for ranges. I don't want to have 20 IFs one under another.
