  • How can I see logs in a server after a kernel panic hang ?

    - by Low Kian Seong
I am running a production gentoo Linux machine, and recently there was a situation where the server hung in my co-located premises and when I got there I noticed that the server was hung on what appeared to be a kernel panic hang. I rebooted the machine with a hard reboot and was disappointed to find out that I could not find a shred of evidence anywhere on why the machine hung. Is it true that when I do a hard reboot the messages itself will get lost or is there a setting I can do somewhere say in syslog-ng or maybe in sysctl to at least preserve the error log so that I can prevent such mishaps from happening in the future ? I am running a 2.6.x kernel by the way. Thanks in advance.

  • need for tcp fine-tuning on heavily used proxy server

    - by Vijay Gharge
Hi all, I am using squid like Internet proxy server on RHEL 4 update 6 & 8 with quite heavy load i.e. 8k established connections during peak hour. Without depending much on application provider's expertise I want to achieve maximum o/p from linux. W.r.t. that I have certain questions as following: How to find out if there is scope for further tcp fine-tuning (without exhausting available resources) as the benchmark values given by vendor looks poor! Is there any parameter value that is available from OS / network stack that will show me the results. If at all there is scope, how shall I identify & configure OS tcp stack parameters i.e. using sysctl or any specific parameter Post tuning how shall I clearly measure performance enhancement / degradation ?

  • Hostname problems in CentOS 5.5

    - by spoon16
I just set up a CentOS 5.5 machine on my local network and attempted to modify the hostname by editing /etc/sysconfig/network file. When I'm logged in locally the change to the hostname is reflected and seems to be working fine. When I open a SSH session via PuTTY from Windows this is what I see at the prompt: [root@? ~]# cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes HOSTNAME=mini.local [root@? ~]# sysctl kernel.hostname kernel.hostname = ? [root@? ~]# hostname ? [root@? ~]# hostname -f hostname: Unknown server error A couple of other symptoms that may be helpful in troubleshooting this problem. I can ping the CentOS box from my Windows machine via IP but not hostname. Also, my Netgear router does not display the hostname when I view the "Connected Devices", I do see the mac address and the proper IP listed though. How can I make it so that the hostname is properly propagated throughout my network?

  • Server not sending a SYN/ACK packet in response to a SYN packet

    - by jeff
Using iptraf, tcpdump and wireshark I can see a SYN packet coming in but only the ACK FLAG is set in reply packet. I'm running Debian 5 with kernel 2.6.36 I've turned off window_scaling and tcp_timestamps, tcp_tw_recycle and tcp_tw_reuse: cat /etc/sysctl.conf net.ipv4.tcp_tw_recycle = 0 net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse = 0 net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling = 0 net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps = 0 I've attached an image of the wireshark output. http://imgur.com/pECG0.png Output to netstat netstat -natu | grep '72.23.130.104' tcp 0 0 97.107.134.212:18000 72.23.130.104:42905 SYN_RECV I've been doing everything possible to find a solution and have yet to figure out the problem, so any help/suggestions are much appreciated. UPDATE 1: I've set tcp_syncookies = 0 and noticed I am now replying with 1 SYN+ACK for every 50 SYN requests. The host trying to connect is sending a SYN request about once every second. PCAP FILE

  • kill SIGABRT does not generate core file from daemon started from crontab.

    - by Guma
I am running CentOS 5.5 and working on server application that sometimes I need to force core dump so I can see what is going on. If I start my server from shell and send kill SIGABRT, a core file is created. If I start same program from crontab and then I send the same signal to it the server is "killed" but no core file is generated. Does any one know why is that and what need to be added to my code or changed in system settings to allow core file generation? Just a side note I have ulimit set to unlimited in /etc/profile I have set kernel.core_uses_pid = 1 kernel.core_pattern=/var/cores/%h-%e-%p.core in /etc/sysctl.conf Also my server app was added to crontab under same login id as I am running it from shell. Any help greatly appreciated

  • Staggering java linux process startup to prevent OOM

    - by ctennis
I am running a number of java processes on a single Linux machine. From a memory and computing standpoint, everything is fine when things are static. However, periodically we use a configuration management package up upgrade the jar or war files, and restart the java process. The problem is, that is restarts them all relatively quickly, and so we get 10 or so java VMs restarting all at the same time (we use daemontools for the service stops/starts), which wreaks havoc on the machine, in terms of OOMs or just really slow. This is because it's spawning the JVM 10x at the same time. Other than trying to stagger the startups, is there a smarter way of handling this? Maybe a sysctl tuning performance parameters, or a JVM parameter?

  • Ways to remotely reboot a Linux system

    - by dualed
I had a remote server running Debian Sarge that experienced some HDD failure and I meant to reboot it hoping that fsck could repair the errors automatically. I eventually drove out there and replaced the faulty disks... But I was wondering: What other ways are there to force a Linux system to reboot that do not require hard drive access? What I had tried: shutdown -r now Did not work, as shutdown is a program that would have to be loaded from disk, the error shown in the terminal was bash: /sbin/shutdown: Input/output error init 6 same as above telinit q same as above kill -2 1 This did not print an error, but did not work either. (However, it is possible that the Sarge init did not implement SIGINT, the sarge manpages did not mention it. So it could work in a more recent version of Debian) This guide on PCFreak.net. However, this failed at sysctl, which was not in memory either.

  • Cannot redirect ip traffic with iptables to new ip on linux centOS

    - by Kiwi
today I able to migrate some of the game servers to another server and needed some help to redirect the traffic from old ip to the new one. SERVER1 1.1.1.1 ----- (internet ) ----- SERVER 2.2.2.2 I asume to use iptables to perform this, for that used this rule on my centOS box in the server1. /etc/sysctl.conf: net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p udp --dest 1.1.1.1 --dport 27015 -j DNAT --to-destination 2.2.2.2:27015 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -d 2.2.2.2 -p udp --dport 27015 -j SNAT --to 1.1.1.1 But the client cannot connect to the server from the old ip, the redirection don't started.

  • afp/smb transfers caps at 2 megabytes/sec, wireless N

    - by RD.
I wanted to transfer files between two mac computers. The network is wireless-N and both computers have wireless-N modules in them. The problem is that when I transfer files between them, via file sharing (afp) the network speed caps at 2 megabytes/sec. Just downloading files from the internet I can get faster speeds, so this isn't a constriction of my wifi bandwidth, it appears to be a constriction of the protocol being used. My wifi-n is set to 130mbits, so I should see real world transfer speeds around 12-16 megabytes/sec I did this command on both computers sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0 which is supposed to lower tcp overhead, but this did not affect it. How can I get the speed I am expecting?

  • Deactivate SYN flooding mechanism

    - by mlaug
I am running a server that is running a service on port 59380. There are more than 1000 machines out there connecting to that service. Once I need to restart the service all those machines are connecting at the same time. That made some trouble as I have seen that log entry in kern.log TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 59380. *Sending cookies*. Check SNMP counters. So I changed sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies to 0 because the endpoints to not handle tcp syn cookies correctly. Finally I restarted my network to get the changes in production Next time I had to restart the service, the following message was logged TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 59380. *Dropping request*. Check SNMP counters. How can I prevent the system for doing such actions? All necessary counter measures are done by iptables...

  • Tcp window size won't go above 130048

    - by Roger
I have 2 servers set up with about 80ms latency between them. Both are centos 6 and run a java app that transfers data from on location to another. Both are on 1gbps connections. I have been trying different sysctl settings and different send & receive buffer settings in java but no matter what I set them to, I cannot get the tcp window size to go above 130048 in the tcp dumps. This equates to roughly 13mbps which is the actual throughput I am getting.

  • Ubuntu server 9.10 freezes up after ~10 minutes - unconventional

    - by L33tCh
There is a topic by essentially the same name, but my answer leads to another question which I would like answered so... My case is as follows: I connect through SSH to my server... no problems for many months on Ubuntu Server 9.04. Eventually I decided to updgrade and straight away I get the 10 minutes freeze problem. I went through all the possible fixes (many can be found here but my quick fix, the only that worked, leaves me with no real answer as to why and how to properly correct it... As ridiculous as it sounds... while I leave a keyboard plugged in... it runs without flaw. Can anyone make sense of this? For the sake of completeness, (although none of the following made any difference upon subsequent completion), some of the permanent changes I have made while trying to correct the issue are: replacing samba config file with 9.04 backup, booting with noapic and modifying sysctl.conf, just uncommenting additional settings for enhanced security.

  • Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-Install RPM for Oracle Linux 6 has been released

    - by Lenz Grimmer
Now that the certification of the Oracle Database 11g R2 with Oracle Linux 6 and the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel has been announced, we are glad to announce the availability of oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall, the Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-install RPM package (formerly known as oracle-validated). Designed specifically for Oracle Linux 6, this RPM aids in the installation of the Oracle Database. In order to install the Oracle Database 11g R2 on Oracle Linux 6, your system needs to meet a few prerequisites, as outlined in the Linux Installation Guides. Using the Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-install RPM, you can complete most of the pre-installation configuration tasks. which is now available from the Unbreakable Linux Network, or via the Oracle public yum repository. The pre-install package is available for x86_64 only. Specifically, the package: Causes the download and installation of various software packages and specific versions needed for database installation, with package dependencies resolved via yum Creates the user oracle and the groups oinstall and dba, which are the defaults used during database installation Modifies kernel parameters in /etc/sysctl.conf to change settings for shared memory, semaphores, the maximum number of file descriptors, and so on Sets hard and soft shell resource limits in /etc/security/limits.conf, such as the number of open files, the number of processes, and stack size to the minimum required based on the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Server installation requirements Sets numa=off in the kernel boot parameters for x86_64 machines Please see the release announcement for further details and instructions. Also take a look at Ginny Henningsen's "How I Simplified Oracle Database Installation on Oracle Linux" article on the Oracle Technology Network for a general description on how to perform the installation of the Oracle Database on Oracle Linux. While the article refers to Oracle Linux 5 and the former "oracle-validated" package, the steps for Oracle Linux 6 are still very similar (we're looking into updating that article for Oracle Linux 6).

  • OpenVPN, Server 12.04, connect to machines in home LAN behind VPN server

    - by inexion
Problem: I've set up a working OpenVPN server, and am able to connect to it from anywhere using my mac laptop and tunnelblick. When I connect in, I'm assigned an IP address of 10.8.0.x, the server is 10.8.0.1, so I have no problems SSHing into it. Once SSHd in, I can even ping other machines (obviously) on my home network (192.168.1.x). Desired outcome: What I want, is, to connect to the VPN server, and instead of getting a 10.8.0.x address, I get a 192.168.1.x on my home network. I can't figure out how to talk to the OTHER machines on my home network WITHOUT being SSHd in to the VPN server. I'd like to just connect to my VPN server, then be a part of my home network. Attempted solutions: I've read that I need to set up routes, and/or enable IP forwarding. I enabled IP forwarding using sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 and that doesn't seem to have done anything. I've also uncommented a line in the OpenVPN's server.conf file: # Push routes to the client to allow it # to reach other private subnets behind # the server. Remember that these # private subnets will also need # to know to route the OpenVPN client # address pool (10.8.0.0/255.255.255.0) # back to the OpenVPN server. push "route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0" ;push "route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0" But still no luck, I still get a 10.8.0.x address... I've also read I may have to add routes to the router itself, but haven't tried that. Any help appreciated, thanks!

  • Setting up shared connection

    - by Calvin Froedge
I have a network that is connected to the internet via a switch connected to a router. I have it setup like this so I can work on the new network without causing problems on the old. Anyway, I'm trying to enable internet connection sharing. Internet comes to server like this: Modem - Router - Switch - Ubuntu 11.10 (Eth0) I want to share the connection through Eth1 (Eth1 - Managed Switch - Clients). Here is my config for /etc/network/interfaces: I have a DHCP server running on Eth1. Here is my config: ddns-update-style none; option domain-name "myserver.local"; option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.2, 8.8.8.8; default-lease-time 600; max-lease-time 7200; authoritative; subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { interface eth1; range 192.168.1.3 192.168.1.254; option routers 192.168.1.1; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255; } Here is /etc/network/interfaces: # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp #Used for internal network auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 network 192.168.1.0 Here is /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 myserver.isp.com server 192.168.1.2 server.myserver.local server myserver.local In /etc/sysctl.conf, I've set the following: net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 Finally, in /etc/rc.local, I've set the following: /sbin/iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT /sbin/iptables --table nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE When I ping 8.8.8.8 (google's DNS) from a client that is authenticated with my DHCP server (they have been assigned a local ip, like 192.168.1.10), I get a timeout. How can I debug this further to figure out where my problem is?

  • Swap, Swapiness and Standby: swapping starts when waking up

    - by mdo
I'm running running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo W500 (Core2Duo T9400, 4GB Ram) Current kernel: 3.2.0-32-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 26 21:33:09 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- but the problems exists since a couple of months, surviving quite a few software (includig kernel) updates I regularly put my machine into suspend-to-ram (S3) and when the machine comes back up Ubuntu starts to swap out processes. I was able to observe that the used swap-space starts to grow right after the box returns. See munin graphs below, the gap (obviously) shows the timeframe in STR. Needless to say that the box becomes unusable while swapping, load goes up beyond 10. What I've done so far: lowered swappiness from default (60) to 10 (via /etc/sysctl.conf: vm.swappiness=10) -- this has improved the situation much, but sometimes the problem comes back, I have not found a trigger (like memory usage) for this for now lowered swappiness to 5 -- perhaps this has brought an improvement again Before going to STR the box ran stable without (swapping) problems for hours. Today when the issue showed up again I used this script (- http://stackoverflow.com/questions/479953/how-to-find-out-which-processes-are-swapping-in-linux) to find what processes have the most used swap space. The result after the swap orgy is like that (all PIDs with more than 10M usage): Overall swap used: 2121344 kB ======================================== kB pid name ======================================== 439520 17491 java 208148 22719 firefox 136640 4337 /usr/bin/quodli 120852 5271 chrome 81832 5264 chrome 74284 17003 chrome 65368 16960 chrome 57088 3675 chrome 56184 30923 chrome 54412 11331 chrome 54264 3878 chrome 51508 18382 chrome 50088 3163 zeitgeist-fts 49772 15543 chrome 41344 15355 compiz 35040 1161 mysqld 32124 18374 chrome 30940 11339 chrome 30044 5752 chrome 28780 4235 plugin-containe 24576 31246 empathy-chat 23840 17703 chrome 22512 3207 ubuntuone-syncd 21588 1937 ntop 18336 2021 asterisk 17200 3915 chrome 13964 1935 Xorg 12036 10679 chrome 11104 30782 empathy 11056 2889 python 10932 16565 knotify4 The java instance at the top is IntelliJ. IntelliJ, Firefox and Chrome also were all used right before the box was put to STR. So my question is: can I somehow prevent these swapouts AND why do they happen? Is it perhaps related to some misidentification of idle processes? I'm not looking for resolutions like: turn off swap buy more RAM Thanks in advance!

  • How to install Oracle Database 11g Express Edition on Ubuntu 12.10?

    - by Praneeth Pj
I installed the Oracle database following the steps mentioned in this blog. Downloaded 11g express edition Created a new user oracle under the group dba. Following steps are executed using this. Unzipped oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm.zip and then converted the rpm to the Ubuntu package by running: sudo alien --scripts -d oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm Created /sbin/chkconfig file and added the entries as specified there. Created /etc/sysctl.d/60-oracle.conf and added the entries as specified in the same link as above. Running the commands: ln -s /usr/bin/awk /bin/awk mkdir /var/lock/subsys touch /var/lock/subsys/listener .deb generated in step 3: sudo dpkg --install oracle-xe_11.2.0-2_amd64.deb Left the default values as it is: sudo /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure Set the following env variables in ~/.bashrc file: export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe export ORACLE_SID=XE export NLS_LANG=`$ORACLE_HOME/bin/nls_lang.sh` export ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH export PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH Running the commands: chown -R oracle:dba /var/tmp/.oracle chmod -R 755 /var/tmp/.oracle chown -R oracle:dba /tmp/.oracle chmod -R 755 /tmp/.oracle Starting Oracle Database 11g Express Edition instance: sudo service oracle-xe start sqlplus / as sysdba and got the following: SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.2.0 Production on Thu Jan 3 09:41:58 2013 Copyright (c) 1982, 2011, Oracle. • Banshee doesn't like opening websites

    - by Allan
I have come across two bugs (which will be added to launchpad if it's not resolved here) When I open any of the websites in Banshee Amazon or Miro Guide as soon as the site is finished loading it crashes Banshee. If I play any video local or remote it will show 1 frame maybe 0.5 sec of video then I get a black screen and audio continues in the backgound. Specs & Details I have a Fujitsu Amilo 1718 laptop with 2 gig of ram (original 1 gig) graphics is provided by ATI Radeon Xpress 200M (don't laugh it works with compiz....just) I have a link to the output of banshee --debug Here Don't have time to read? • How can I get FreeNAS to respond to libvirt shutdown requests

    - by ptomli
    I have a KVM VM of FreeNAS 0.7.1 Shere (revision 5127) running on Ubuntu Server 10.04 and I'm unable to convince the VM to shutdown from the host virsh shutdown freenas I would expect this to send some ACPI? trigger to the VM and FreeNAS then do what it's told. I'm not a FreeBSD fundi so I don't really know what packages or processes to poke to get this running. I have tried to convince powerd to run, but the VM cpus don't have the required freq entry Sysctl HW $ sysctl hw hw.machine: amd64 hw.model: QEMU Virtual CPU version 0.12.3 hw.ncpu: 1 hw.byteorder: 1234 hw.physmem: 523116544 hw.usermem: 463806464 hw.pagesize: 4096 hw.floatingpoint: 1 hw.machine_arch: amd64 hw.realmem: 536850432 hw.aac.iosize_max: 65536 hw.amr.force_sg32: 0 hw.an.an_cache_iponly: 1 hw.an.an_cache_mcastonly: 0 hw.an.an_cache_mode: dbm hw.an.an_dump: off hw.ata.to: 15 hw.ata.wc: 1 hw.ata.atapi_dma: 1 hw.ata.ata_dma_check_80pin: 1 hw.ata.ata_dma: 1 hw.ath.txbuf: 200 hw.ath.rxbuf: 40 hw.ath.regdomain: 0 hw.ath.countrycode: 0 hw.ath.xchanmode: 1 hw.ath.outdoor: 1 hw.ath.calibrate: 30 hw.ath.hal.swba_backoff: 0 hw.ath.hal.sw_brt: 10 hw.ath.hal.dma_brt: 2 hw.bce.msi_enable: 1 hw.bce.tso_enable: 1 hw.bge.allow_asf: 0 hw.cardbus.cis_debug: 0 hw.cardbus.debug: 0 hw.cs.recv_delay: 570 hw.cs.ignore_checksum_failure: 0 hw.cs.debug: 0 hw.cxgb.snd_queue_len: 50 hw.cxgb.use_16k_clusters: 1 hw.cxgb.force_fw_update: 0 hw.cxgb.singleq: 0 hw.cxgb.ofld_disable: 0 hw.cxgb.msi_allowed: 2 hw.cxgb.txq_mr_size: 1024 hw.cxgb.sleep_ticks: 1 hw.cxgb.tx_coalesce: 0 hw.firewire.hold_count: 3 hw.firewire.try_bmr: 1 hw.firewire.fwmem.speed: 2 hw.firewire.fwmem.eui64_lo: 0 hw.firewire.fwmem.eui64_hi: 0 hw.firewire.phydma_enable: 1 hw.firewire.nocyclemaster: 0 hw.firewire.fwe.rx_queue_len: 128 hw.firewire.fwe.tx_speed: 2 hw.firewire.fwe.stream_ch: 1 hw.firewire.fwip.rx_queue_len: 128 hw.firewire.sbp.tags: 0 hw.firewire.sbp.use_doorbell: 0 hw.firewire.sbp.scan_delay: 500 hw.firewire.sbp.login_delay: 1000 hw.firewire.sbp.exclusive_login: 1 hw.firewire.sbp.max_speed: -1 hw.firewire.sbp.auto_login: 1 hw.mfi.max_cmds: 128 hw.mfi.event_class: 0 hw.mfi.event_locale: 65535 hw.pccard.cis_debug: 0 hw.pccard.debug: 0 hw.cbb.debug: 0 hw.cbb.start_32_io: 4096 hw.cbb.start_16_io: 256 hw.cbb.start_memory: 2281701376 hw.pcic.pd6722_vsense: 1 hw.pcic.intr_mask: 57016 hw.pci.honor_msi_blacklist: 1 hw.pci.enable_msix: 1 hw.pci.enable_msi: 1 hw.pci.do_power_resume: 1 hw.pci.do_power_nodriver: 0 hw.pci.enable_io_modes: 1 hw.pci.host_mem_start: 2147483648 hw.syscons.kbd_debug: 1 hw.syscons.kbd_reboot: 1 hw.syscons.bell: 1 hw.syscons.saver.keybonly: 1 hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch: 0 hw.usb.uplcom.interval: 100 hw.usb.uvscom.interval: 100 hw.usb.uvscom.opktsize: 8 hw.wi.debug: 0 hw.wi.txerate: 0 hw.xe.debug: 0 hw.intr_storm_threshold: 1000 hw.availpages: 127714 hw.bus.devctl_disable: 0 hw.ste.rxsyncs: 0 hw.busdma.total_bpages: 32 hw.busdma.zone0.total_bpages: 32 hw.busdma.zone0.free_bpages: 32 hw.busdma.zone0.reserved_bpages: 0 hw.busdma.zone0.active_bpages: 0 hw.busdma.zone0.total_bounced: 0 hw.busdma.zone0.total_deferred: 0 hw.busdma.zone0.lowaddr: 0xffffffff hw.busdma.zone0.alignment: 2 hw.busdma.zone0.boundary: 65536 hw.clockrate: 2808 hw.instruction_sse: 1 hw.apic.enable_extint: 0 hw.kbd.keymap_restrict_change: 0 hw.acpi.supported_sleep_state: S3 S4 S5 hw.acpi.power_button_state: S5 hw.acpi.sleep_button_state: S3 hw.acpi.lid_switch_state: NONE hw.acpi.standby_state: S1 hw.acpi.suspend_state: S3 hw.acpi.sleep_delay: 1 hw.acpi.s4bios: 0 hw.acpi.verbose: 0 hw.acpi.disable_on_reboot: 0 hw.acpi.handle_reboot: 0 hw.acpi.cpu.cx_lowest: C1 Processes $ ps ax PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND 0 ?? • How does ps show the argv for all processes on Mac OS X?

    - by DNS
I'm trying to identify when a particular process is running, based on its arguments, on Mac OS X. There may be several processes running with the same name, but only one will have the arguments I'm looking for. The processes are not owned by the same user who will be running my code. They will not have modified their argv in any way. The 'ps' command shows exactly the information that I need. But I would greatly prefer not to have to spawn 'ps' and parse its output. I originally tried the solution from this question, using sysctl, but it turns out that only works for processes you own; see my other question for more info. So how does ps obtain argv information for processes owned by other users?

  • No client internet access when setting up these iptables rules

    - by Siriss
I have read many other posts but cannot figure this out. eth0 is my external connected to a Comcast modem. The server has internet access with no issues. eth1 is internal and running DHCP for the clients. I have DHCP working just fine, all my clients can get an IP and ping the server but they cannot access the internet. I am using ISC-DHCP-SERVER and have set /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server to INTERFACE="eht1" Here is my dhcpd.conf file located in /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf ddns-update-style interim; ignore client-updates; subnet 10.0.10.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 10.0.10.10 10.0.10.200; option routers 10.0.10.2; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220; #OpenDNS # option domain-name "example.com"; default-lease-time 21600; max-lease-time 43200; authoritative; } I have made the *net.ipv4.ip_forward=1* change in /etc/sysctl.conf here is my interfaces file: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp iface eth1 inet static address 10.0.10.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 10.0.10.0 auto eth1 And finally- here is my iptables.conf file: # Firewall configuration written by system-config-firewall # Manual customization of this file is not recommended. *nat :PREROUTING ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :POSTROUTING ACCEPT [0:0] -A POSTROUTING -s 10.0.10.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE #-A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 59668 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.10.2:59668 COMMIT *filter :INPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0] -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -p icmp -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -i eth1 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 53 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m udp -p udp --dport 53 -j ACCEPT -A FORWARD -s 10.0.10.0/24 -o eth0 -j ACCEPT -A FORWARD -d 10.0.10.0/24 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -i eth0 -j ACCEPT -A FORWARD -p icmp -j ACCEPT -A FORWARD -i lo -j ACCEPT -A FORWARD -i eth1 -j ACCEPT #-A FORWARD -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp -d 10.0.10.2 --dport 59668 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -j REJECT --reject-with icmp-host-prohibited -A FORWARD -j REJECT --reject-with icmp-host-prohibited COMMIT I am completely stuck. I cannot figure out why the clients cannot access the internet. Am I missing a service? Is a service not running? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried to be as thorough as possible but please let me know if I have missed something. Thank you!
