  • Chrome Time Track Is a Simple Task Time Tracker

    - by ETC
If you don’t need advanced project tracking but still want to track how long it takes you to finish certain tasks or projects, Chrome Time Tracker is a free Chrome extension with a dead simple interface. Install the extension and a Time Track icon appears in your toolbar. Click it to create new tasks, delete old tasks, and start, stop, and reset your task timers. When the timer is running the icon changes to indicate you’re on the clock; pause the timer and it toggles back to the default icon. Hit up the link below to grab a copy. • monkey patching time.time() in python

    - by user84584
Hello guys, I've an application where, for testing, I need to replace the time.time() call with a specific timestamp, I've done that in the past using ruby (code available here: http://github.com/zemariamm/Back-to-Future/blob/master/back_to_future.rb ) However I do not know how to do this using Python. Any hints ? Cheers, Ze Maria

  • How to back up a network volume to my Time Capsule?

    - by Mike
I have a Time Capsule that I'm using for my backups. I have a network volume (coincidentally on the same time capsule) that I'd like to back up as well. How can I tell Time Machine to back up network volumes in addition to my main laptop hard drive? PS: yes, I know this setup isn't ideal. It'll incur 2x network overhead when backing up the network volume, plus my data won't be safe in the event of a drive failure since both copies will be on the same disk. However, it will give me some small amount of safety in the event I accidentally delete files on the network volume, among other things.

  • Strict Pomodoro and other time management Chrome extensions

    - by kerry
I have recently begun using the Pomodoro Technique to increase my productivity. However, I still find myself getting sucked in to the vortex of useless information that is the internet. With that in mind I began searching for a useful chrome extension to replace the Android Pomodoro app I have been using to manage my ‘doros. I even considered writing it myself. Luckily, I stumbled on one that had a similar featureset to what I was looking for. Strict Pomodoro is an excellent Chrome extension for practicing Pomodoro. Though lacking a few key features, such as the ability to set the duration of your pomodoros and breaks, it still has a key feature that helps me stay on task. It blocks time sucking websites. You can set filter lists and it will keep you from accessing them during a Pomodoro. Effectively reminding you to stay on task. Also, the author readily admits that it was quickly put together and new features may be added down the road. For now, it is still an excellent option. For those of you who do not practice Pomodoro but are trying to stay on task. The StayFocusd extension will effectively manage the amount of time you spend on useless (non-productive) sites. It also has a rich feature set that may be better for your work habits. OK, breaks over. Time to get back to work. 25 minutes at a time.

  • How to code Time Stop or Bullet Time in a game?

    - by David Miler
I am developing a single-player RPG platformer in XNA 4.0. I would like to add an ability that would make the time "stop" or slow down, and have only the player character move at the original speed(similar to the Time Stop spell from the Baldur's Gate series). I am not looking for an exact implementation, rather some general ideas and design-patterns. EDIT: Thanks all for the great input. I have come up with the following solution public void Update(GameTime gameTime) { GameTime newGameTime = new GameTime(gameTime.TotalGameTime, new TimeSpan(gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.Ticks / DESIRED_TIME_MODIFIER)); gameTime = newGameTime; or something along these lines. This way I can set a different time for the player component and different for the rest. It certainly is not universal enough to work for a game where warping time like this would be a central element, but I hope it should work for this case. I kinda dislike the fact that it litters the main Update loop, but it certainly is the easiest way to implement it. I guess that is essentialy the same as tesselode suggested, so I'm going to give him the green tick :)

  • Daylight saving time: Annoying and pointless [closed]

    - by polemon
Daylight saving time is a big annoyance for me. Not just from the standpoint, that I never know when we set our clocks an hour ahead or an hour back. Setting the clock ahead or back disturbs my time organization, and is responsible for my bad mood around that day. From the standpoint of a programmer, it's no less annoying. you always have to check whether it isn't "that date" in the year, when you have to work with local time. I hear people have the same views on this that I have. also, I don't see any benefits from it. The supposedly added "extra hour" of sunlight; I don't feel that. In case you live in a region where daylight savings is observed (like in Germany, where I live), please tell me how you manage the annoyances that come with it, and (if possible) how to get rid of it, once and for all...

  • Real-time chat in Ruby on Rails

    - by Skydreamer
First, I'm sorry because I know this question has been asked many times but I'm still looking forward to finding the answer to my problem. I'd want to implement a Real-time chat for my Rails app but I can't really host the server which handles the sockets. I've tried Faye but it needs a server. I've also heard of pusher but it's limited to 20 users at a time on the chat and I can't really be sure they won't be more. I've thought of irc but I think I can't really embed it into a rails app, maybe it needs sockets... So here's my problem, can I implement a real-time chat without owning a server ? What can you advice me ? Thank you for your answers.

  • Gentoo server time issue, can't manually set time, NTPD won't correct, too big of a time difference

    - by kevingreen
So, my server is living in the future, unfortunately I can't get lottery numbers, or stock picks out of it. It thinks this is the time: Thu Nov 7 04:07:18 EST 2013 Not correct, I tried to set the time manually via date in a few ways # date -s "06 NOV 2013 14:48:00" # date 110614482013 -- same output, same problem Which outputs Wed Nov 6 14:48:00 EST 2013, but when I check the date again, it's still set to Nov 7th 0400 or whatever. I checked my system messages, and I see this pop up often: Nov 7 03:54:00 www ntpd[4482]: time correction of -47927 seconds exceeds sanity limit (1000); set clock manually to the correct UTC time. Which makes sense, we're way off the correct time. But I can't seem to manually fix it. So now what? Also, I'm wondering if my hardware clock is setup correct, hwclock doesn't return any values. Would that be causing issues? This is a virtualized server, I don't have direct access to the hypervisor, but I can talk to who does, assume I can explain myself well enough. Thanks

  • How to start and maintain an after-work project

    - by Sam
I work as a full time developer. My workplace, however, is very limiting in the technologies and programming languages I can use. All of the work is done in C++. It is clear that C++ is rapidly losing (or maybe already lost) its leading position. (please don't flame me, I have years and years of C++ experience, and I love this language, I am merely stating a fact). I have a few ideas for java/android projects as well as a project I would like to implement in C#. I see this as a way for me to stay current with the job market's trends and I hope that it will help me find my next job in a more up to date area. So here's the problem, my normal workday is 10-11 hours, after finishing with the kids and house chores I get about 1-2.5 hours before I am too tired to think much less code. at that point I am going to bed frustrated, disappointed with myself for not being able to stick with my plans, and then I wake up the next morning to do it all again. I have a few hours more during the weekends but clearly I would need to do something different if I want to reach any of my goals. Is there any way for me to make better use of the time I have? Did any of you guys have a similar problem, and had succefully resolved it?

  • Linear time and quadratic time

    - by jasonline
I'm just not sure... If you have a code that can be executed in either of the following complexities: (1) A sequence of O(n), like for example: two O(n) in sequence (2) O(n²) The preferred version would be the one that can be executed in linear time. Would there be a time such that the sequence of O(n) would be too much and that O(n²) would be preferred? In other words, is the statement C x O(n) < O(n²) always true for any constant C? If no, what are the factors that would affect the condition such that it would be better to choose the O(n²) complexity?

  • How should I manage my time?

    - by Tathagata
There are times when just one bug that keeps eating away your time like hell ... for example this one. I generally end up wasting hours and realize I've gone terribly behind my schedule and not completed other tasks. With n number of tabs open in the browser, I end up posting the question in stackoverflow as a last resort. What are some time management techniques that lets you stop, rewind and get back in action when faced with a road block?

  • [Erlang - trace] How to trace for all functions in an Erlang module except for one?

    - by Dlf
I wanted to trace for all functions in an erlang module, with dbg:tpl, but one of the internal functions took up 95% of the trace file. I then wanted to exclude only that single function and found that it was not as easy as I thought it would be. I know there are great pattern matching possibilities for arguments when tracing. Is there a similar possibility to apply pattern matching for functions? eg.: {'=/=', '$2', function_name} I am open for outside-the-box solutions as well! Thank You!

  • Convert 12hour time to 24Hour time

    - by RwardBound
    I have hourly weather data. I've seen the function examples from here: http://casoilresource.lawr.ucdavis.edu/drupal/node/991 I'm altering the code to account for airport data, which has a different URL type. Another issue with the airport weather data is that the time data is saved in 12 hour format. Here is a sample of the data: 14 10:43 AM 15 10:54 AM 16 11:54 AM 17 12:07 PM 18 12:15 PM 19 12:54 PM 20 1:54 PM 21 2:54 PM Here's what I attempted: (I see that using just 'PM' isn't careful enough because any times between 12 and 1 pm will be off if they go through this alg) date<-Sys.Date() data$TimeEST<-strsplit(data$TimeEST, ' ') for (x in 1:35){ if('AM' %in% data$TimeEST[[x]]){ gsub('AM','',data$TimeEST[[x]]) data$TimeEST[[x]]<-str_trim(data$TimeEST[[x]]) data$TimeEST[[x]]<-str_c(date,' ',data$TimeEST[x],':',data$TimeEST[2]) } else if('PM' %in% data$TimeEST[[x]]){ data$TimeEST[[x]]<-gsub('PM', '',data$TimeEST[[x]]) data$TimeEST[[x]]<-strsplit(data$TimeEST[[x]], ':') data$TimeEST[[x]][[1]][1]<-as.integer(data$TimeEST[[x]][[1]][1])+12 data$TimeEST[[x]]<-str_trim(data$TimeEST[[x]][[1]]) data$TimeEST[[x]]<-str_c(date, " ", data$TimeEST[[x]][1],':',data$TimeEST[[x]][2]) } } Any help?

  • Laptop takes a long time to boot after Grub menu

    - by Andres
I am running a Asus R401VJ laptop (Latin America version of N46VJ) that has a Core i7 CPU and 8GB RAM. After my Grub menu, which is displayed for 2 seconds as I set it up, I'm getting a black screen with a blinking white cursor that is increasing my boot time to about 60 seconds. After a while Ubuntu runs fine, I just want to reduce my boot time. I don't know if this has something to do with my never used Nvidia 2GB GeForce GT 635M graphics card. Always when I tried to install the driver, I ended up with a ~600x800 screen resolution, and I fixed it by deleting a file called: xorg.conf from the /etc/X11/ directory, following a suggestion that I read in another forum. I would appreciate detailed answers, I'm still new at Ubuntu.

  • Managing time for success in the industry? [closed]

    - by nvillec
So about a year ago I decided to pursue programming, specifically game development, as a career. I've always been a pretty avid gamer, from chucking turnips at Shy Guys' faces in the 90s, to downing Heroic Deathwing last week. Just recently though, I've been spending a LOT of time playing games and it's starting to show in my programming classes. Yesterday after a discouraging exam, I put my foot down and vowed to myself to keep the gaming:coding ratio in favor of the one that will hopefully pay the bills later on. I realize that knowing games well is a key part of being a good developer, but as I've been recently shown, there's a threshold of pixelated indulgence that must not be crossed if I'm ever going to land my dream job. I'm assuming many of you are quite enthusiastic about games as well. What advice would you give an aspiring programmer regarding time management? Thanks!! (Also, I'm brand new to Stack Exchange...if this belongs somewhere else, I'm happy to move it)

  • Effects of automated time tracking/monitoring [closed]

    - by user73937
What are the effects of monitoring the developers' computer usage? (Which program they use - based on the title of the applications - and how much time in a day they use the keyboard and mouse.) Would it has any positive or negative effects on productivity, morale, motivation, etc? It will not have any direct impact on the developers' salary or their performance review it's just for curiosity. The developer and their manager will only see the results. Would it change anything if only the developer is allowed to see the results? The developer can disable the monitoring (for privacy) but it won't count as work time (in the monitoring program).

  • Reduce boot time between grub menu and login screen

    - by Sudheer
I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS version which used to boot fast at beginning but not i loads very slow. I searched for this but can't find suitable answers. so i want to reduce my boot time which is now around 1min 12sec (boot chart) overall but i noticed its taking a longtime after grub menu and before login screen. A Blank screen appears after grub waiting... then login screen appears. I want to know a way to reduce that blank screen time(or if possible remove) and get login screen as fast as possible. I already removed several of my startup applications. Getting desktop after log-in is fast. I don't want to remove unity and install light desktop envinorments like Xfce and Lxde. Here is my boot-chart image Thanks in advance

  • Matab - Trace contour line between two different points

    - by Graham
Hi, I have a set of points represented as a 2 row by n column matrix. These points make up a connected boundary or edge. I require a function that traces this contour from a start point P1 and stop at an end point P2. It also needs to be able trace the contour in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. I was wondering if this can be achieved by using some of matlabs functions. I have tried to write my own function but this was riddled with bugs and I have also tried using bwtraceboundary and indexing however this has problematic results as the points within the matrix are not in the order that create the contour. Thank you in advance for any help. Btw, I have included a link to a plot of the set of points. It is half the outline of a hand. The function would ideally trace the contour from ether the red star to the green triangle. Returning the points in order of traversal.

  • Time Machine/iMac loses all trace of external hard drive after a few days

    - by Bill
First time posting, also a Mac newbie (recent windows convert) so I'm hoping I can get some help here :) I have a Hitachi Deskstar drive in an external casing that I got from ebuyer. (its one of those unknown fairly cheapish enclosures) connected via firewire. I hook it up and it works fine, but then at some point over the next week or so I'll realise that my last update was 3 days ago or so. At this point the Mac will not recognise the drive as existing and the only thing to do is switch off and on the external enclosure. It then works fine for a while. If I had to guess I'm assuming its powering down or something when the Mac goes into standby? Is there anyway to solve this?
