• Failed install 12.04 on Intel Hardware Raid with Large Partition (> 2TB)

  I have Intel Hardware Raid on the motherboard. I have 10 2 TB HDD that I've configured as RAID 1+0 to be one big 8 TB HDD. Now I'm trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on it. After installing with default desktop installation disk I get a blank screen with a cursor flashing. If I try the alternate guided partitioning option I get error: out of disk. and the grub prompt. If I boot with the rescue disk or such like I can drop into a shell and view the disk. Everything also installs without an issue. Don't know what to do...

• Developing a DVR software using a hardware KIT

  I'm currently thinking about a project for my masters degree graduation. I start researching for options to make my own video streaming software based on a premade hardware kit having not much knowledge about what I'll exactly need that will match my needs. My search led me to the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) cards which seems to be the closest to what I need, but still I can't find out a few basic things so I decide to ask for them here. Currently I haven't find a lot of manufacturers that offers such kits so where I can look and have some options to choose from? There are a lot of DVR products on the market but they already have a software written for them and even if I buy one they just don't give any documentation or sdk's so buying such is not an option I need a DVR card made exactly for software programers and not end users. Are there a preferred manufacturers that provide such kind of devices with good and developer-friendly documentation? Also - I prefer to do all this with Java, is this an option (I think I will make it with .NET too but really prefer Java as a language of choice)

• Disabling hardware checking in the start up

  I have a ubuntu (10.04) on my desktop and it doesn't have monitor. I would like to connect the desktop (ubuntu) via teamviewer from my laptop. However, when the PC is powered, pc gives an error about it could not find monitor and it gets stuck in this error and does not continue. Since the ubuntu started correclty, teamviewer doesnt start to work on ubuntu so that I can not connect to the ubuntu. How can I disable hardware/desktop checking at the startup, so that ubuntu would start normally then I can use teamviewer?

• To Virtual or Not to Virtual

  I recently made a comment "I hate everything virtual" while responding to a SQL server performance question.  I then promptly fired up my Hyper-V development environment to do my proof of concept stuff, and realized that I made the cardinal sin of making a generalized comment about something, instead of saying "It depends". The bottom line is if the virtual environment gives the throughput that the server needs, then it is not that big of a deal.  I just have seen so many environment set up with SQL server sitting in virtual environment sitting in a SAN, so on top of having to plan for loss data, I now have to plan for my virtual environment failing for so many different reasons, thought SQL 2012 High Availability Group should make that easier.  To me, a virtual environment makes sense for a stateless application with big scalibility requirement, but doesn't give much benefit to an application where performance and data integrity are both important.  If security is not a concern, I would just build servers with multiple instances on them to balance the workload. Maybe this is also too generalized a comment, and I'll confess that I'm not a DBA by trade.  I'd love to hear the pros and cons of virtualizing a SQL server, or other examples where virtualization makes total sense (not just money, but recovery, rollback, etc.)

• Ruby SerialPorts Gem

  Using Ruby SerialPorts Gem to interact with hardware. When I write a byte array to the hardware using a program called "Serial Port Monitor" the hardware responds correctly. However, when I write the same byte array using ruby it doesn't work unless I do a read request just before the write request. This device doesn't respond correctly with this sp = SerialPort.new(args) sp.write [200.chr, 30.chr, 6.chr, 5.chr, 1.chr, 2.chr, 0.chr, 244.chr] But it does if I add a read request before the write. Like this sp SerialPort.new(args) sp.read sp.write [200.chr, 30.chr, 6.chr, 5.chr, 1.chr, 2.chr, 0.chr, 244.chr] This works, but I'm at a loss as to why. I should also add that the first snippet does work occasionally maybe 1/10 of the time.

Note: Each of the servers also has two other separate tomcat domains that run different applications Investigated area: There is no Heap Memory Leak and the GC is running fine without any issues over any period of time The current busy thread count corresponds directly to the application usage – weekends and nights have lesser no. of threads compared to business hours ThreadLocal uses a WeakReference internally. If the ThreadLocal is not strongly referenced, it will be garbage-collected, even though various threads have values stored via that ThreadLocal. Additionally, ThreadLocal values are actually stored in the Thread; if a thread dies, all of the values associated with that thread through a ThreadLocal are collected. If you have a ThreadLocal as a final class member, that's a strong reference, and it cannot be collected until the class is unloaded. But this is how any class member works, and isn't considered a memory leak. The cited problem only comes into play when the value stored in a ThreadLocal strongly references that ThreadLocal—sort of a circular reference. In this case, the value (a SimpleDateFormat), has no backwards reference to the ThreadLocal. There's no memory leak in this code. Can anyone please let me know what could be the cause of this and what to be monitored?

• Where to find information about ubuntu compatible or certified hardware/PC models

  I am buying a new desktop PC in early 2013, anyway this question should apply to someone intending to buy a new laptop/ultrabook as well. This machine is not meant for gaming, and if I ocasionally do it, I can survive with minimum graphics. However I may need some heavy multimedia edition or multitasking at times, so basically my greatest priority is a good processor, after that perhaps average graphic card (if onboards are not enough, I am still not informed enough about that), at least 4GB of RAM with possibility of expansion. I know there are some PC models specially designed to ship with Ubuntu, which is the OS I use the most these days. However, most people around me use Windows and some software with unsupported versions for Linux and not having a Windows license becomes a bit problematic. Given that, I would like to find information about which PC models or even manufacters currently on the market have the best compatibility with Ubuntu, I am still undecided between building my own desktop or buying a pre-made model, so I would like to find information both for certified models and certified hardware or even Ubuntu partners that may work closely with Canonical. Where to find this information in order to make sure that I will have a good experience with Ubuntu on my new PC in the years to come?

• Has the hardware in my modem gone bad?

  I contacted CenturyLink about my modem recently and received useless and unrelated information. The problem seems to be that the modem will no longer save settings, the web interface is unusable except in internet explorer for some reason, and the modem keeps resetting. CenturyLink claimed it had to do with signal strength but I checked and it is currently between good and outstanding according to this. All of the lights remain green even when it starts acting up and I lose internet and shortly before it crashes and reboots. Does anyone have any idea what is going on or what I can do to fix it? (Asking CenturyLink again is obviously not going to help.) Update 1: Accessing the syslog from the web interface causes a crash. When I read about the Python VM, the PyPy project, the advancements in JVM technology, Google V8, the Erlang VM, I really get excited about these amazing pieces of technology, and really want to get my hands dirty building them or contributing to one of these projects. I need to know.. what are the things (language, concepts, algorithms, math, etc?) I need to know/learn to be able to build a virtual machine any books or other resources that will be helpful career prospects for a virtual machine engineer (but this is least important for me for now) (one more side question: somewhere I'd read something like JVM is on the cutting edge of virtual machine technology -- that it is the most advanced VM so far -- is that true?) Please give me a LONG answer detailing all that you know.

  I know you have to have mac os x to use xcode and thus to develop/compile apps for the iphone. And I'm not exactly wanting to go the hackintosh way, so I'm looking at buying a used mac. What specs are recommended. If I buy a cheap mac mini that has only 1gb of ram would that be enough? (I'm not talking about using that to create the graphics/audio, I'll use my normal windows/ubuntu pc for that). I'm just talking about being able to use xcode and write applications. I'm trying to spend the least amount I can without running into problems developing the app.

• Hardware issues on Samsung NF208 (NF210)

  I'm trying to get Ubuntu 10.10 running on my wife's Samsung NF208 (same spec as NF210, but shipped without OS), and I have run into a pile of problems: At first, there were problems with audio, display brightness, and WiFi, so I reinstalled Ubuntu from scratch. After reinstalling, the audio has started working but the WiFi loses network access all the time and then it takes 5-10 minutes for it to reconnect to the network. Also, display brightness is at its lowest. I have tried to use the brightness command but it won't run. Is this system utterly incompatible with Ubuntu, or are there working WiFi and display drivers for it somewhere? I have googled for days but haven't found anything useful. Help me. Update: I never got it working properly. I came across lots of useful tips and tricks over at the forum linked to in the accepted answer but I just wasn't able to get it working and stable enough for the intended use. • Cloudstack virtual machines can't communicate with virtual routers when they are on different hosts

  I'm using Cloudstack 2.2.14 on a Ubuntu 10.04 set of hosts, and I have a problem on my setup. I have two hosts running. When a virtual router is created on host 1 and a virtual machine using that virtual router is created on host 2, or vice versa, I have no connectivity at all on the virtual machine. First of all, I have to setup the network manually on that virtual machine -usually DHCP is working, but not here-. Then, I can't ping to the virtual router from the virtual machine or vice versa. When both virtual router and virtual machine are created on the same host, everything works! Maybe those packages are being filtered somehow? I have no clue on how to proceed. Both hosts can communicate directly outside the virtualization.

• C++ vtable resolving with virtual inheritance

  I was curious about C++ and virtual inheritance - in particular, the way that vtable conflicts are resolved between bass and child classes. I won't pretend to understand the specifics on how they work, but what I've gleamed so far is that their is a small delay caused by using virtual functions due to that resolution. My question then is if the base class is blank - ie, its virtual functions are defined as: virtual void doStuff() = 0; Does this mean that the resolution is not necessary, because there's only one set of functions to pick from? Forgive me if this is an stupid question - as I said, I don't understand how vtables work so I don't really know any better.

We found another virtual desktop tool that is completely free for everyone to use, called mDesktop. It’s a lightweight, open source program that allows you to switch among multiple desktops using hot keys and specify open programs or folders to be active on all desktops.   Hi, I have installed Windows Virtual PC 2007 on my Windows 2003 R2 Server. I have installed a virtual Windows XP. I have configured the virtual PC to use Shared Networking (NAT) I have disabled the firewall on the virtual windows XP The problem: I am unable to PING from Windows 2003 (the host) to the Windows XP (virtual) I do have normal traffic from the virtual to the internet Could this problem be related to routing? How I can I fix this network configuration to allow for the following traffic: 1. From Virtual to Internet 2. From Host to Virtual 3. If possible, from Internet to Virtual on pre-defined ports (port forwarding?) Thanks

The first service I wanted to move to the commercial SSL cert was Webmin/Usermin... • VSS Post Backup failures for Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 virtual machines

  We've been seeing strange errors with Volume Shadow Copy services on our Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 host. It appears to be failing on a strange mountpoint in the C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ folders, which I believe is used by VSS to mount a writeable image file. To summarize: The Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Writer continually goes into a failed retryable state The Virtual Server log reports errors during the Post Backup phase VSS reports errors backing up a mount point of unknown origins The mount point causes NTFS and ftdisk errors The host is x86 Windows Server 2003 Standard, SP2. The virtual machine is the same. Both use basic disks. Here is the writer state: Writer name: 'Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Writer' Writer Id: {76afb926-87ad-4a20-a50f-cdc69412ddfc} Writer Instance Id: {78df98e2-bf19-4804-890b-15865efef3bd} State: [11] Failed Last error: Retryable error From the Virtual Server log: Virtual Server - Vss Writer - Event ID: 1035: The VSS writer for Virtual Server failed during the PostBackup phase. The guest shadow copies did not get exposed on the host machine, after mounting all the virtual hard disks of the virtual machine VMACHINE. From the Application log: VSS - None - Event ID: 12290: Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: GetVolumeInformationW( \\?\Volume{fb84bae7-87f5-11dd-9832-001cc4961ca6}\,NULL,0, NULL,NULL,[0x00000000], , 260) == 0x0000045d. hr = 0x00000000. From the System log: Ntfs - Disk - Event ID: 55: The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ {fb84bae7-87f5-11dd-9832-001cc49.... My current theory is that VSS creates a mount point for an image file of the VHD, then the software panics for some reason, leaving everything in an inconsistent state. Removing the mount point doesn't resolve the problem. All of the other disks check out fine with CHKDSK. There's no exclusion option for VHDs or to turn off online backups. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or point me in the right direction for getting more information about the mount point and it's origins? I haven't been able to trace what application is creating that mount point.

• Move "XP Mode" from Windows Virtual PC to VirtualBox?

  I installed "XP Mode" in Windows 7 (which uses Windows Virtual PC to host XP). I have now discovered that VirtualBox, which I have installed on the same Windows 7 machine, refuses to run at the same time as Windows Virtual PC (it gives me an error about not running multiple visualization programs). Is there any way I can convert the "XP Mode" image so that it will run inside VirtualBox instead of Windows Virtual PC? That way I will be able to run XP as well as other VM's at the same time.

• How to talk to a virtual host on a guest OS?

  Let's say there is a host OS (Mac OS X) and a virtual machine running Ubuntu as guest OS. The guest OS has the IP 192.186.56.101 and some virtual hosts, e.g. ubuntu.server So, how to really map a request to the virtual host ubuntu.server on the guest OS? I tried: Configure the host OS in /etc/hosts to map ubuntu.server to 192.186.56.101 On the guest OS we have the trouble. It accepts the request for 192.186.56.101 which is not ubuntu.server and therefor the ubuntu.server virtual host will never be requested. Just the localhost on the guest OS. It might surely be possible to simply then use 192.168.56.101. But this would only work for one host per guest OS. Any idea? Or is there a bug in my train of thoughts?

• How to hide a program that is running on a virtual machine?

  Some softwares contain tests to see if they are running on a virtual machine. It's very unpleasant to see alert messages such as "Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine." and have your software stopped! There is a lot of legal reasons to override such tests. Moreover such limitations are (most of the time) not written in User License Agreement. So... how to hide a program that is running on a virtual machine? I'm using a Virtual Private Server (VPS) with Hyper-V... I'm administrator of the Operating System (Windows 2003) installed on this VPS, not administrator of Hyper-V.
