  • What is the best website width? [on hold]

    What is the best website width? I can't decide between 1200px max-width and 1236px....with 300px sidebar as enough or 320px? I personally like wide website, my current website is 1236px; but I hear it's considered very wide for eyesight and all those gadgets keeping in mind... The website is for reading - I mean, mostly articles with around 3000 words on average per page, so no matter - whether they look wide, whether they love to scroll down :) Also - what to decide about Banner size / sidebar? Probably the 300px I can put a 300px banner, but on 320px sidebar I could put 336px banner, if necessary...

  • download speed is fast but transfer rate is slow

    I've just changed ISP and I'm pretty disappointed with the transfer rate. My previous connection has a download speed of 1.08 Mb/s as seen from this site: http://speedtest.net and the download transfer rate is about 100kb/s for sites that doesn't limit their bandwidth. Now my connection has about 2Mb/s download speed but the transfer rate is dancing from 20-50kb/s . I was expecting a speed much higher than this because of the download speed that I'm getting when I'm testing. The question is what's the difference between transfer rate and download speed, is it normal to have a high download speed but low transfer rate, should the download speed be proportional to the transfer rate?

  • Wget - if / else download condition?

    I want wget to prefer a certain filetype over another, if the files have the same basename. For example: if foo.ogg available, don't download foo.mp3 the way i use wget so far to crawl/automatically download (if anyone is interested): wget -Dfoo.com -I /folder/ -r -l 1 -nc -A.ogg,.mp3 -i http://www.foo.com/folder/ but this, of course, gets me .mp3 AND .ogg files. It often also gets me image files like .png which i didn't want in the first place, and discards them afterwards. Any Ideas? (Syntax-Explanation: -D: download only from this Domain -I: download only from this subfolder of Domain -r: recursive (follow links and directory structure) -l 1: follow only 1 link deep -nc: no clobber = download only if file doesn't exist -A: accept/download only all *.ogg and *.mp3 (discard necessary html-files) -i: download-url/starting point)

    I see that the most time on computer I loose just for searching a suitable software. How you do it? what is your way to find a software? you first go on Forum?, google? Which torrent site? which P2P prog.? website, server? my problem - my way is: For example: "I need a software that have function remote and also leaves you to copy and paste (drag and drop - file manage). And after few hours searching on Google I download LOGMEIN pro2, but than I see that is just trial. so if I need to find alternative I will spend another whole day Where to go? I am not big amateur but I need better system. I need better intorudction how to find what is the suitable software for you and where you can download it?

  • SQL SERVER – Download PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility

    During an early career of mine as a database consultant – when I was dealing with SQL Server 2000, I often needed to collect various data related to SQL Server. My favorite tool to collect the data is PSSDIAG tool. It is a general purpose diagnostic collection utility that Microsoft Product Support Services uses to collect various logs and data files. It collects Performance Monitor logs, SQL Profiler traces, SQL Server blocking script output, Windows Event Logs, and SQLDIAG output. The data collected can be used by SQL Nexus tool which help you troubleshoot SQL Server performance problems. PSSDIAG is a wrapper around other data collection APIs and utilities, the performance impact of running PSSDIAG is generally equal to the impact of the traces that PSSDIAG has been configured to capture. If you are using SQL Server 2000 – you need to seriously consider to upgrading it to SQL Server 2012. Here is a PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility updated in August 2012.     I have a web design project that is related to a singer, and I used Joomla for my previous project and designed good music websites. But for this project I cannot find a suitable template to edit and use. As the website is so simple and does not have any special functionality, I'm thinking about creating a website with just simple CSS, html and jQuery. I'm Good at them and can make a perfect look but I am not sure about the security. In Joomla I use different security plugins but do not know about a client-side scripting. So generally I need your ideas, about the following questions: - Is Joomla and generally CMS a good option for a music website? - How famous artists' website is base on? CMS or Client-side scripting? - Do you recommend to create it manually without using and CMS or template? - An do you suggest WordPress for this type of websites? (The website will have these pages: Biography, News, Music (with a music player), Photos, videos and contacts). That's it! Also I had a look at ThemeForest's WordPress templates and it has such a great template. I think WordPress is more active in creating artistic templates.   • ideas: per-file authentication in order to download

    i would love to use mod_xsendfile but i live in a shared environment which does not provide such a module. processing large files such as videos through a server-side script and sending it to the browser that way seems to be unacceptable in my case, so i am looking for a way to enable per-file authentication in such a way that is not going to consume resources much. nobody shall know what the actual path is to the file they are downloading. please suggest how to do that.

  • Website hosted at home pingable from outside, but not browseable from outside

    I have a simple setup. Server at home has local I.P. 192.168.1.3 IIS is running on the server and the website is up. Windows firewall on the server has an exception rule for port 80 TCP Router has static I.P. XX.XXX.XX.XXX Router is forwarding TCP port 80 to 192.168.1.3 My domain registrar is my DNS host and is pointing to the static I.P. XX.XXX.XX.XXX of the router Here's what I can and can't do. I can browse the website from within my home network either by I.P. or domain name. I can ping the domain and the I.P. from outside the network (from a computer at work). I can't browse the website either by domain name or by I.P. Wierd. Why I can't browse my website? Incidentally, I wasn't sure this question was appropriate for SO, but after finding a few others similar to it on SO, and no comments on those questions saying anything about it being innapropriate, I decided I would post this question. Let me know if this is not appropriate for SO, or is more appropriate for another of the SE websites. Thanks!

    I am not a web developer - this would be my first foray. I can do HTML/CSS/Javascript, but never created a website for a company. If anybody is creating a site for small company (expecting some 10-15 static pages), what kinda things would it need to have? I am thinking of the following: Make the eventual owner buy in his/her name: Domain name, Web Hosting package and Email package. Q - DO Web Developers generally ask their clients to buy this stuff and then ask them to share their passwords? OR - Do Web Developers ship the source files to clients so that they can upload it? Create Cross Browser compatible HTML+CSS+javascript pages Add SEO stuff like Meta tags and xml file for crawler Buy professional images from stock website Q - IS there is a best-practice for this step? Add Copyright stuff. Q - ANY idea about how to do this? Add Faceboook widgets, so people can 'like' my website. Register website somewhere so that its searchable from multiple search-engine/yellopages. Q - DOES such a thing exist? Please check my checklist :) and let me know what you think could be missing?     I have a website (www.ayrshireminis.com), which has three main sections under different directories, these are: /forum /galleries /contact I would like to have an aggregated view of the data for the whole website, but also for each section. What is the recommended approach for doing this? I believe I can create a web property that includes a profile for the entire website and duplicated filtered profiles, each section having an include filter. This is my gut instinct, but i'd like to know if there is another (better) way to do it? Maybe by having one account that includes a profile for the whole site and another profile with an include filter for the individual sections?

There was a site called Blackle ( http://www.blackle.com/) which "claimed" to save energy by using a black background (it doesn't: see here: http://skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/4373/how-much-energy-does-displaying-a-webpage-with-a-black-background-actually-save). However, blackle and it's idea of "green website design" interested me, and I was wondering if there are any ways to design an energy saving website that actually save energy. If anyone knows of any, please post them here. If nobody has any, then I guess there isn't a way to save energy through website design...

  • Mirror a website with httrack while executing javascript

    I want do save a mirror of www.youtube.com/tv. I obviously do not want to save the videos. I want the code running the website in a local copy, everything else can stay remote. The code I want is mainly contained in 2 files: live.js and app-prod.js. I tried using httrack. I have issue parsing the javascript to load anything past the first file: live.js. The %P parameter does not help. httrack www.youtube.com/tv +* -r6 --mirror -%P -j It doesn't go further than live.js because some javascript needs to be executed to load the next file. I know I can do this manually with any browser. I want to automate the process. Is httrack able to do this by itself? If yes, how?

  • Download resume support blocked by isp?

    Can ISP block resume support for downloads ? I'm using IDM (internet download manager) to download of the internet from resume supported websites, yet I am unable to resume downloads. I tried different computers with the same result. Turned off firewall, didn't have any effect i was able to download with no issues until a couple of days ago. Another thing i noticed is that before IDM used to try to connect to several connections to speed up my download, but now it can only connect to one connection. Also i tried to download using my vpn, and i was able to download and resume downloads with no problem.

    Hi all, I'm using Git to manage my website's source code and deployment, and currently have the test and live sites running on the same box. So a few questions: IS this safe? Would a better approach be to have my base repository be the test site repository (with corresponding working directory), and then have that repository push changes to a new live site repository, which has a corresponding working directory to the live site base? This would also allow me to move the production to a different server and keep the deployment chain intact. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a different, clean way to differentiate between test and production deployments when using Git for managing websites? As an additional note in light of Vi's answer, is there a good way to do this that would handle deletions without mucking with the file system much?
