• Transient network dropout for Xen DomU's

  We've got a CentOS server running a cluster of virtuals. Occasionally the cluster's internal network drops out for a minute or so ... and then comes back. The problem is somehow related to the actual network traffic, but it is not a simple load issue. (The system is generally lightly loaded, and the problem occurs irrespective of actual load.) The setup: CentOS 5.6 on Dom0, various CentOS on the DomU's Hardware - a Dell R710 with a BroadCom NextXpress 2 NIC (sigh) using the latest drivers for the NIC from BroadCom Xen configured to use network-bridge and vif-bridge Some iptable tweaks to route an unrelated port to one of the virtuals. The system has one externally visible IP address, and Dom0 runs an Apache httpd configured with a number of virtual hosts each of which reverse proxies to web servers running on the virtuals. (The virtuals have to be NAT'ed, primarily because we don't have enough allocated public IP addresses.) The symptoms: Works fine most of the time. When someone tries to UPLOAD a large file to one virtuals, the internal network drops out ... for all virtuals: The Dom0 httpd sees a network timeout talking to the backend server on the virtual and reports a 502. A previously established ssh connection from Dom0 to any of the DomU's freezes. Our monitoring shows ping failures for traffic between virtuals. The Xen consoles to the DomU's do not freeze. No log messages in any log files that I can see, on either Dom0 or the DomU's ... apart from the Dom0 httpd logs. After a minute or so, the problem clears by itself. This is 100% reproducible. What we've tried: Downloading, building and installing the latest BNX2 driver on Dom0 Turning off MSI on the NIC - adding "options bnx2 disable_msi=1" to /etc/modprobe.conf Turning off tcp segmentation offload - "ethtool -K eth0 tso off". Sacrificing a black rooster at midnight. I've exhausted all my options apart from switching to KVM ... or slaughtering more roosters. Any suggestions?

• [Ubuntu]df Total size is not correct compared with the size of the disk

  I'm running Ubuntu Squeeze and on one of the partitions df is showing the Total size as 335G: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb 335G 225G 94G 71% /mnt However in the past it was showing as 360GB (which is the actual size): fdisk -l /dev/sdb Disk /dev/sdb: 365.0 GB, 365041287168 bytes lsof +L1 does not return anything (and anyway if this would be the case the Total space should not be affected.) On this partition I'm writing (and deleting) a lot of files and this happened before in the past, but problem solved by itself.

Are VMs usually used to run the backbone (actual code) of DFS structure ? • CD Burned in XP isn't readable in Vista

  I burned a CD on XP using the built-in burning software and I can read the CD on that machine, but when I insert it into my Vista machine, I can't read the files. It shows the correct volume label, and the correct 'free space', but I can't access the actual files. Am I missing something obvious? (Both systems are fully up-to-date)

  I can't change Firefox's menu background color using userChrome.css on Windows 7. menubar, menubutton, menulist, menu, menuitem { color: red !important; background-color: orange !important; } This seems to work as the menubar changes to red and orange. But the background-color on the actual drop down menu stays the same (that Windows 7 menu look), although the text color does change to red. Any ideas??

If a HD has a damaged PCB board, but the actual disc inside the drive where all the information is stored is not damaged, is it possible to take that disc and put it in another hard drive whose PCB board is not damaged? • DNS lookup aliasing of hostnames (not IP aliases), probably via dnsmasq

  I'd like to be able to set up a host, say "eg", to be an alias to some server on the internet, say "example.example.com". I just need this functionality to be available from my local machine. I'm running dnsmasq on that machine, which is running ubuntu 9.10. Is there a way to configure dnsmasq or the resolver subsystem (including avahi) to resolve that alias hostname via the actual hostname, so that eg will resolve to the ip address of example.example.com?

• Trac changesets not displaying

  I have setup Trac to integrate with our VisualSVN server. It all seems to work fine, except when I am viewing changesets, it only shows the files that have changed, not the actual diff of what has changed in the file. In addition, when I am viewing a particular file in Trac, the 'diff' link is not visible, which I have seen in other installations. I assume it is probably a configuration issue, or maybe the way the data is being entered in the first place. Any suggestions?

  I am looking to use monit to keep an eye on my site. I want it to treat it the site like an external user so am testing the url but it doesn't seem to follow redirects. The content check is being performed on the html of the redirect. #request works: if failed url http://www.sharelatex.com/blog/posts/future.html content == "301" #request fails if failed url http://www.sharelatex.com/blog/posts/future.html content == "actual content" Finding out how to get the url check to follow 30X would be great.

• Is it possible to copy a set of files, but automatically skip if file already exists?

  I know that the copy command has an option to automatically replace a file if it already exists, but I want to know if it is a way to copy the files only if they not already exist (/Y). I do not know the actual file names in the batch code, as I copy from the source using wildcards in the copy command: copy *.zip c:\destination The reason I want this instead of automatic overwrite is that the files are large, and to skip existing would save a lot of execution time.

The actual book page dimensions are around 6x9", but each scanned page is 8.5x11", the size of the scanner bed. For much smaller PDF files I could throw it into Photoshop and crop the page, but this is a huge file. What is the best way to losslessly crop all of the pages of the file, in either Windows or OS X?

  I very often use subtitles on my mkv player to watch movies. I have frequently observed that there is sometime a lag between the subtitles and the actual video. Even after setting the subtitle offset one would have to go on increasing it as the movie proceeds. • I can't connect to mysql on a remote server

  I'm trying to connect from an Ubuntu server to a RHEL6 server using mysql. I've tried telneting into the server as well as trying to connect with mysql. I've tried commenting out the bind-address but didn't have any success with that either. I don't get an error code or anything with telnet. It just fails after a minute or so. With mysql, I get this error code ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'SERVER_IP' (111). "SERVER_IP" is of course a placeholder where actual error gives that actual IP. I've included my my.cnf as well as well as my iptables from the destination server.
