  • Android: Why my user Interface does not get drawn when I Inflate the resource layout file?

    - by Einiosaurus
    First of all, I'm a newbie on Android programming, so please be detailed in your answers. I have a layout main.xml file with format similar to <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android = "http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation = "vertical" android:layout_width = "fill_parent" android:layout_height = "fill_parent"> <LinearLayout xmlns:android = "http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation = "horizontal"   android:layout_width = "fill_parent" android:layout_height = "fill_parent"> <EditText android:id="@+id/a" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/xSquared" android:layout_width = "fill_parent" android:layout_height = "wrap_content" android:text = "@string/equationPart1" /> </LinearLayout> <LinearLayout ... </LinearLayout> </LinearLayout> In my Java source file, I inflate the UI using command: setContentView(R.layout.main); public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); } However, when I run the emulator, the UI does not show up like what I expect. Instead, it just display a simple EditText text box. I wonder what is going wrong. Is it because I put a layout inside another layout? I don't think there is any problem with that right?

  • Is it possible to restart the phone with Android SDK or NDK?

    - by J Andy
    Is it possible to programmatically restart the phone from a application (service) running on top of the Dalvik VM? If the SDK does not provide this functionality, then how about using the NDK and calling some functions provided by the kernel? I know this option is not preferred (not stable enough libs), but if it's the only option, I'll have to consider that as well.

  • How to set Camera View as background with views over it?

    - by Android Student
    So, I'm trying to make the background to one of my apps look "futuristic." I thought of an idea to make the screen look almost transparent yet have views over it. So, it would look something like this: I'm thinking that I can use the camera to capture the background of the phone (without taking a picture, just having the real time view in the background) and then, if possible, place a semi-transparent slightly blurred ImageView over that. Finally, on top of that I can place the other views including the ImageButtons. So, my question is how would I go about doing this? I have searched but haven't found anything relevant. It must be possible; its just how to do it? I don't expect you to give me all the code as an answer, just if you have any ideas that can help or links or code that can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • Android - How to circular zoom/magnify part of image?

    - by IZI_Shadow_IZI
    I am trying to allow the user to touch the image and then basically a cirular magnifier will show that will allow the user to better select a certain area on the image. When the user releases the touch the magnified portion will dissapear. This is used on several photo editing apps and I am trying to implement my own version of it. The code I have below does magnify a circular portion of the imageview but does not delete or clear the zoom once I release my finger. I currently set a bitmap to a canvas using canvas = new Canvas(bitMap); and then set the imageview using takenPhoto.setImageBitmap(bitMap); I am not sure if I am going about it the right way. The onTouch code is below: zoomPos = new PointF(0,0); takenPhoto.setOnTouchListener(new OnTouchListener() { @Override public boolean onTouch(View v, MotionEvent event) { int action = event.getAction(); switch (action) { case MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN: zoomPos.x = event.getX(); zoomPos.y = event.getY(); matrix.reset(); matrix.postScale(2f, 2f, zoomPos.x, zoomPos.y); shader.setLocalMatrix(matrix); canvas.drawCircle(zoomPos.x, zoomPos.y, 20, shaderPaint); takenPhoto.invalidate(); break; case MotionEvent.ACTION_MOVE: zoomPos.x = event.getX(); zoomPos.y = event.getY(); matrix.reset(); matrix.postScale(2f, 2f, zoomPos.x, zoomPos.y); canvas.drawCircle(zoomPos.x, zoomPos.y, 20, shaderPaint); takenPhoto.invalidate(); break; case MotionEvent.ACTION_UP: //clear zoom here? break; case MotionEvent.ACTION_CANCEL: break; default: break; } return true; } });

  • Why do apps from Android 2.1 stop working with 2.2?

    - by poeschlorn
    Hi guys, I've just updated my nexus one to 2.2. Now all of my (own and some from the market) apps throw exceptions and were closed. It's weird, in the app I'm developing atm, there it displays only my start page with buttons, but when I tap on one button to fire an intent to another activity my app gets closed with an exception. Yesterday before the update everything worked fine. The same thing in my emulator: I have two devices, one with API level 7 and one with level 8. Level 7 worked fine, but level 8 killed my app :( What is the problem and how can I solve this? I'm desperatly trying to get it working again :( I hope someone can help me fixing this

  • You Don’t Need to Install a Task Manager: How to Manage Running Apps on Android

    - by Chris Hoffman
    Google Play is full of task managers for Android. These utilities can show you apps running in the background, kill running apps, and otherwise manage your apps — but you don’t need to install any third-party software to do this. We’ll show you how to quickly and easily kill and manage your running apps using only the software included with your Android phone. Third-party task managers are unnecessary and many include harmful features, like task killers.

  • Best Platform/Engine for turn based Client/Server Android game

    - by Paradine
    I'm currently designing a turn based game for tablets. Initially for Android with porting to iOS later considered in design. I'm having trouble narrowing down the available technologies to even know where to spend my research time. I am hoping that if I explain what I am trying to achieve someone may be able to suggest a platform and/or engine. I've looked into some of the open source Engines ( http://www.cuteandroid.com/ten-open-source-android-2d-or-3d-game-engine-for-android-developers ) and some appear to handle much of what I might require - although with a higher focus on graphics than i need. Mages looks interesting although development appears to have ceased. If I could somehow leverage GoogleApps that would be excellent. Here is what I am trying to achieve: PvP turn based strategy game over internet - minimal animation and bandwidth required Players match up online using MetaGame system MatchID created on Resolution Server and Game starts Clients have 30 second countdown to select MoveString Clients sends small secure timestamped and MatchIDed MoveString to Resolution server Resolution server looks up Move String for each player, Resolves and Updates Players status in MatchID on Server Resolution server updates Client Views Repeat until victory conditions met - MatchID Closed, Rewards earned in MetaGame There will also need to be a full social and account system and metagame backend - but this could be running on separate system(s) Tablet in Offline mode would be catalog browsing and perhaps single player AI - bum I'm focusing on the Resolution Server at this point I'm not even certain if I would be looking at an Android App or a WebApp at this stage! I want a custom GUI so I guess an app - but maybe as I have little animation a WebApp might also work. Probably some combination of both. There will be very small overhead in data between client server - essentially a small text string every 30 seconds sent to the Resolution server which looks up the Effect and applies it to the Opponents string and determines some results to apply to the match. The client view is updated minimally with the results (only 5 in game Integers tracked) - perhaps triggering small animations/popups on the client to show the end result. e.g Explosion. If you have suggestions for a good technology or platform to best achieving the Resolution Server I'd love to hear. Also if you have experience with open source Engines - and could narrow down which (if any ) might be most suitable that would be a big help. Thanks in advance

  • Ubuntu 13.10 japanese keyboard layout intercepts Caps Lock

    - by Envek
    I've installed Ubuntu 13.10 (clean install on new machine), there are lot of changes for configuring keyboard layouts and I've tried to configure it as I've used earlier: Englis (US), Russian and Japanese (Anthy) with switching between them with Caps Lock key. (See screenshot) Caps Lock switching works fine between Russian and English and vice-versa, but with Japanese I can switch only TO Japanese (not FROM), in Japanese layout Caps Lock starting to work as usual Caps Lock (as a switch between small and BIG letters), so I need to use mouse to switch back to Ru or En layout. This happens ONLY with Japanese layouts (I've tried also simply "Japanese" and "Japanese (Kana)"), not with Chinese, Korean or anything else. I'm not sure who is blame for that, is it ibus-anthy or anything. Please help, I want to use Caps Lock to switch between all layouts. Also, I've created a bug in the LaunchPad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/1247363

  • Inserting data to database from Android

    - by Angel
    I have to build an application where the requirement is that my clients will send data from their Android device and I have to save that data to a database. I have done the part of coding that inserts data from Android emulator to my XAMPP database on localhost, now I have to implement the real thing. How can I connect the devices where my application will be installed to the XAMPP database I have created so that the data they send can be inserted into it?

  • android third party libraries

    Its hard to believe that there aren't a ton of awesome third party (possibly open source) libraries out on the web for android using java but, I cant say I have found a great many so far but, droid seems like the only notable one I've come across. Any other majorly useful android libraries out there? Sorry in advanced if there is a dupe out there somewhere (seems like there should be) but if there is by all means post it and let me know.

  • Wake laptop when lid is opened?

    - by crackout12
    I have a SAMSUNG laptop, which by the experience in the last months, has been a great one. I am actually implementing some functionality to it, and since I noticed, I am able to wake up my laptop from sleep by just opening the lid on Windows 7, however, I need to press to power button to wake up in Ubuntu. Using a program called i-nex, I noted that the kernel DOES dettect a "lid switch", and I am looking forward to use it to wake up function. Any ideas? UPDATE: Thanks @yossile for bringing up some clues! However, output of command cat /proc/acpi/wakeup does not show the LID device. I still tried the second set of commands you gave me with no effect. Then I tried experimenting, guessing that LID should be named by other value, so I tried enabling the others. No victory so far. But I noticed that devices that did not have any pci listings were disabled at all time no matter what I tried. Here is the output of command cat /proc/acpi/wakeup: root@samsung:~# cat /proc/acpi/wakeup Device S-state Status Sysfs node PCE4 S4 *disabled pci:0000:00:04.0 SBAZ S4 *disabled pci:0000:00:14.2 P0PC S4 *disabled pci:0000:00:14.4 GEC S4 *disabled PE20 S4 *disabled pci:0000:00:15.0 PE21 S4 *disabled PE22 S4 *disabled pci:0000:00:15.2 PE23 S4 *disabled PWRB S5 *enabled So maybe it could be that LID is either GEC,PE21, or PE23? Still, there is /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state file which shows that LID is opened. Any more ideas?

  • How to Use Quick Toggles on Your Android Phone

    - by Chris Hoffman
    One of the big new features in Apple’s iOS 7 is Control Center, which allows you to quickly access and toggle common setting from anywhere. However, Android phones have had quick toggles for a long time. Android now has its own built-in quick toggles, while popular manufacturer-customized interfaces like Samsung’s TouchWiz have their own quick toggles, which work differently. You can also add custom quick toggles in different places.

  • How do I handle calls to AudioTrack from jni without crashing?

    - by icecream
    I was trying to write to an AudioTrack from a jni callback, and I get a signal 7 (SIGBUS), fault addr 00000000. I have looked at the Wolf3D example for odroid and they seem to use a android.os.Handler to post a Runnable that will do an update in the correct thread context. I have also tried AttachCurrentThread, but I fail in this case also. It works to play the sound when running from the constructor even if I wrap it in a thread and then post it to the handler. When I do the "same" via a callback from jni it fails. I assume I am braeaking some rules, but I haven't been able to figure out what they are. So far, I haven't found the answer here on SO. So I wonder if anyone knows how this should be done. EDIT: Answered below. The following code is to illustrate the problem. Java: package com.example.jniaudiotrack; import android.app.Activity; import android.media.AudioFormat; import android.media.AudioManager; import android.media.AudioTrack; import android.os.Bundle; import android.os.Handler; import android.util.Log; public class JniAudioTrackActivity extends Activity { AudioTrack mAudioTrack; byte[] mArr; public static final Handler mHandler = new Handler(); /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); mArr = new byte[2048]; for (int i = 0; i < 2048; i++) { mArr[i] = (byte) (Math.sin(i) * 128); } mAudioTrack = new AudioTrack(AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC, 11025, AudioFormat.CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO, AudioFormat.ENCODING_PCM_8BIT, 2048, AudioTrack.MODE_STREAM); mAudioTrack.play(); new Thread(new Runnable() { public void run() { mHandler.post(new Runnable() { public void run() { mAudioTrack.write(mArr, 0, 2048); Log.i(TAG, "*** Handler from constructor ***"); } }); } }).start(); new Thread(new Runnable() { public void run() { audioFunc(); } }).start(); } public native void audioFunc(); @SuppressWarnings("unused") private void audioCB() { mHandler.post(new Runnable() { public void run() { mAudioTrack.write(mArr, 0, 2048); Log.i(TAG, "*** audioCB called ***"); } }); } private static final String TAG = "JniAudioTrackActivity"; static { System.loadLibrary("jni_audiotrack"); } } cpp: #include <jni.h> extern "C" { JNIEXPORT void Java_com_example_jniaudiotrack_JniAudioTrackActivity_audioFunc(JNIEnv* env, jobject obj); } JNIEXPORT void Java_com_example_jniaudiotrack_JniAudioTrackActivity_audioFunc(JNIEnv* env, jobject obj) { JNIEnv* jniEnv; JavaVM* vm; env->GetJavaVM(&vm); vm->AttachCurrentThread(&jniEnv, 0); jclass cls = env->GetObjectClass(obj); jmethodID audioCBID = env->GetMethodID(cls, "audioCB", "()V"); if (!audioCBID) { return; } env->CallVoidMethod(cls, audioCBID); } Trace snippet: I/DEBUG ( 1653): pid: 9811, tid: 9811 >>> com.example.jniaudiotrack <<< I/DEBUG ( 1653): signal 7 (SIGBUS), fault addr 00000000 I/DEBUG ( 1653): r0 00000800 r1 00000026 r2 00000001 r3 00000000 I/DEBUG ( 1653): r4 42385726 r5 41049e54 r6 bee25570 r7 ad00e540 I/DEBUG ( 1653): r8 000040f8 r9 41048200 10 41049e44 fp 00000000 I/DEBUG ( 1653): ip 000000f8 sp bee25530 lr ad02dbb5 pc ad012358 cpsr 20000010 I/DEBUG ( 1653): #00 pc 00012358 /system/lib/libdvm.so

  • How to handle screen orientation change when progress dialog and background thread active?

    - by Heikki Toivonen
    My program does some network activity in a background thread. Before starting, it pops up a progress dialog. The dialog is dismissed on the handler. This all works fine, except when screen orientation changes while the dialog is up (and the background thread is going). At this point the app either crashes, or deadlocks, or gets into a weird stage where the app does not work at all until all the threads have been killed. How can I handle the screen orientation change gracefully? The sample code below matches roughly what my real program does: public class MyAct extends Activity implements Runnable { public ProgressDialog mProgress; // UI has a button that when pressed calls send public void send() { mProgress = ProgressDialog.show(this, "Please wait", "Please wait", true, true); Thread thread = new Thread(this); thread.start(); } public void run() { Thread.sleep(10000); Message msg = new Message(); mHandler.sendMessage(msg); } private final Handler mHandler = new Handler() { @Override public void handleMessage(Message msg) { mProgress.dismiss(); } }; } Stack: E/WindowManager( 244): Activity MyAct has leaked window com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView@433b7150 that was originally added here E/WindowManager( 244): android.view.WindowLeaked: Activity MyAct has leaked window com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView@433b7150 that was originally added here E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewRoot.<init>(ViewRoot.java:178) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.addView(WindowManagerImpl.java:147) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.addView(WindowManagerImpl.java:90) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.Window$LocalWindowManager.addView(Window.java:393) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.Dialog.show(Dialog.java:212) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ProgressDialog.show(ProgressDialog.java:103) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ProgressDialog.show(ProgressDialog.java:91) E/WindowManager( 244): at MyAct.send(MyAct.java:294) E/WindowManager( 244): at MyAct$4.onClick(MyAct.java:174) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.performClick(View.java:2129) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.onTouchEvent(View.java:3543) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.widget.TextView.onTouchEvent(TextView.java:4664) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.dispatchTouchEvent(View.java:3198) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1593) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1089) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.Activity.dispatchTouchEvent(Activity.java:1871) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.dispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1577) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1140) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:88) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:3739) E/WindowManager( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) E/WindowManager( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:515) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:739) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:497) E/WindowManager( 244): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) and: W/dalvikvm( 244): threadid=3: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x4000fe68) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception E/AndroidRuntime( 244): java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: View not attached to window manager E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.findViewLocked(WindowManagerImpl.java:331) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.removeView(WindowManagerImpl.java:200) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.Window$LocalWindowManager.removeView(Window.java:401) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.dismissDialog(Dialog.java:249) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.access$000(Dialog.java:59) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog$1.run(Dialog.java:93) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.dismiss(Dialog.java:233) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at MyAct$1.handleMessage(MyAct.java:321) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:88) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:3739) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:515) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:739) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:497) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) I/Process ( 46): Sending signal.   • Android "single top" launch mode and onNewIntent method

    - by Rich
    I read in the Android documentation that by setting my Activity's launchMode property to singleTop OR by adding the FLAG_ACTIVITY_SINGLE_TOP flag to my Intent, that calling startActivity(intent) would reuse a single Activity instance and give me the Intent in the onNewIntent callback. I did both of these things, and onNewIntent never fires and onCreate fires every time. The docs also say that this.getIntent() returns the intent that was first passed to the Activity when it was first created. In onCreate I'm calling getIntent and I'm getting a new one every time (I'm creating the intent object in another activity and adding an extra to it...this extra should be the same every time if it was returning me the same intent object). All this leads me to believe that my activity is not acting like a "single top", and I don't understand why. To add some background in case I'm simply missing a required step, here's my Activity declaration in the manifest and the code I'm using to launch the activity. The Activity itself doesn't do anything worth mentioning in regards to this: in AndroidManifest.xml: <activity android:name=".ArtistActivity" android:label="Artist" android:launchMode="singleTop"> </activity> in my calling Activity: Intent i = new Intent(); i.putExtra(EXTRA_KEY_ARTIST, id); i.setClass(this, ArtistActivity.class); i.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_SINGLE_TOP); startActivity(i);

  • Android: trouble updating to Android SDK Tools, revision 7.

    - by Arhimed
    Currently I have Android SDK 2.1 (+ tools revision 4). I'd like to upgrade to Android SDK 2.2. When I try to do it I'm informed I need to upgrade Android SDK Tools to revision 7 first. So I agree, the process starts and then I get an error: -= warning! =- A folder failed to be renamed or moved. On Windows this typically means that a program Is using that Folder (for example Windows Explorer or your anti-virus software.) Please momentarily deactivate your anti-virus software. Please also close any running programs that may be accessing the directory 'D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\too!s'. When ready, press YES to try again. Downloading Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Installing Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Failed to rename directory D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools to D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\temp\ToolPackage.old01. I am aware of http/https and antivirus issues. So I disactivated my AV. I also closed any application that might hold a handle to the folder. Eclipse is also closed (I start the manager via command line). However I still get the same error. Looks like the only app that can hold a handle to the folder is the manager itself, because its starting directory is the one the error complains about ('\tools'). I am on Win XP Pro + SP3. Does anyone have an idea?
