  I am installing a Server @home to manage the mac client's of my family. First I wanted to make time machine Backups over the internal network to an external Hard-drive which is connected to my Mac OS X Server (10.6) but when I read about the mobile accounts and it's synchronization features I got a little bit irritated what the differences between the two Services are. So where are the differences between a mobile account and a Time Machine Backup which is made over the network? Can the synchronized mobile Account be backup to an external Harddisk, if yes, how?

• Do you know of an online back up & sync solution for Windows that actually works?

  I've been looking for some time for a program that backups your data to the cloud and is also able to sync 2 or more computers. By syncing I mean, if I change something on one computer that it should also apply the same change on another computer. I've tried two solutions so far which looked good initially but ultimately failed because they were buggy or simply don't work, or both. Syncplicity has messed up my file structure several times and they don't fix fix bugs that are literally over a year old. I then switched to SpiderOak which looked promising but ultimately had the same problems. Messed up my file structure several times, sometimes sync simply doesn't work, it's extremely inefficient and they keep pushing out releases were they say they fixed the sync bugs I reported but they did't. Does anyone of you know of an online sync solution that actually works?

• Make Windows Task Scheduler alert me on fail

  I have an automated script that pulls backups from my website to my local computer. Once my server was down, another time i accidentally move my script. How do i make Windows Task Scheduler tell me with the script fails (or doesnt run/not found)? I dont care if a prompt comes up, an email or something that appears on my desktop. I want to be notified if something goes wrong. On my server crontab emails me about errors which is great. I want something like that on my windows 7 local computer.

• iTunes Sync erasing Exchange calendar / contacts

  We have had a handful of instances where corporate iPhone users will be syncing Calendar/Contacts/etc in their iTunes settings, and we would like to prevent this. Unfortunately, when they sync their empty home Outlook calendars it then overwrites everything in their iPhone calendar. This has the unpleasant side effect up "updating" Exchange and wiping out every meeting they have. Luckily, our backups have bailed us out in each case - there seems to be no recovering from it any other way as the data is gone. We prefer to allow our users to continue loading media on their phones, which we believe requires iTunes. Is there a way, through Exchange ActiveSync or iOS mobile management, to prevent this from happening?

• Daily Weekly and Monthly DB backup with logrotate?

  I am currently keeping daily backup of my database by doing a daily mysqldump and by using logrotate to keep the 7 last days of mysqldump. I would like to improve this backup process to keep 7 daily backup, 3 weekly backups and 12 monthly backup. I found this article which explain how to di this with logrotate : http://www.hotcoding.com/os/sysadmin/35751.html However I am using the dateext logrotate option to name my backup files so I cannot use this solution. How can I do daily, weekly and monthly backup with logrotate and with the dateext option?

• Backup SQL server db issue: delete old backup files

  I tried to use sqlmaint.exe tool to back up a database on a remote PC. Here is an example of backup: sqlmaint.exe -S remoteSQLServer\SQLInstance -U username -P pwdxxx -D myDB -BkUpMedia DISK -BkUpDB C:\MSSQL_Backups -DelBkUps 3days ... Here I specified to delete backups older than 3 days. However, the job seems not deleting old bak files on the remote PC(where the SQL server sits). The remote PC has Windows 2008 Server. I also set the C:\MSQL_Backups as shared network drive for EnyOne as owner. My understanding is that the job will delete any bak files older than 3 days. Not sure what I missed? By the way, the job runs at a box with SQL server 2005 installed.

  We've used Iron Mountain's LiveVault service but found that it was only good for file level backups. We liked how it backed up every 15 minutes. It doesn't support Exchange 2007-10 and the web interface was very poor. Who else is everyone using? The most notable names in online backup such as Mozy and Carbonite don't really seem suitable for larger companies. We have SQL, Exchange and Sharepoint servers and are looking to virtualize in the near future. Until then bare metal restore capability would be nice. We are currently using Backup Exec 12.5 but that can be so troublesome at times. We have about 2 TB of data. 1TB is archival data.

• Limited access to Amazon S3 buckets

  Is it possible to somehow limit the access to an Amazon S3 account. I don't really like the idea of distributing my secret access key to all of my applications, that want to access just a single bucket on my account. If someone gains access to one of the applications, I could loose all my data stored on S3. One way I was thinking to do it would be creating a second S3 account and give it access to just one bucket of the main account, but it's not really a great solution. Another nice thing for me would be to give the secondary account only write (but not modify/delete) and read access. That way I could upload backups or other files and be sure, that they won't get lost.

What would you use to keep track of Hardware / Software inventory Backups of OS images, Drivers, and all that LAN configuration information Passwords for all the systems Currently I'm thinking of having some sort of wiki + web server on our only ''server-class'' machine, but then I fear I'd be the only one who would go through the hassle of adding information in the wiki... So, have you been through that? What would you suggest?

• How do I clone an Ubuntu server under VMWare

  I have a Ubuntu 12.04 server running under VMWare. As best as I can tell, the VMWare vmbk file has been corrupted. The server is operating normally, but this is preventing backups (using Veeam). To remedy this, I'd like to create a duplicate VM without the corruption issue. However, with the corrupted file VMWare can't help me, eg. create a simple clone. I can create a new VM. How do I clone the configuration / data from my problematic server into the new one? Updated: just to clarify: I realise I can't use the VMWare clone tools. I will manually create a new VM (with a base O/S if necessary). How to I replicate the O/S and data from one VM into another?

• Using rsync with link-dest from HFS to NTFS

  Hi, I'm having a problem with rsync. I'm on a Mac and I'd like to sync my everyday's changes from my HFS+ partition to my NTFS formated networked drive. Pretty simple, and everything goes well except that it syncs every file each times. • How to rename a BTRFS subvolume?

  I have a BTRFS filesystem with a set of subvolumes in it. So far so good. I need to change the name of a subvolume, unfortunately the btrfs program does not allow me to rename a subvolume. Searching with Google has yielded some results, one said I can just mv, the other said I can just snapshot to a new name and delete the old subvolume. Before I crash my partition and have to reload it from the backup (it's quite large), my question is: What is the currently best way to rename a subvolume? Is it ok to just mv it, or will it invalidate some internal structures? Is making a new snapshot and removing the old subvolume the way to go, or has this some drawbacks? I know everything is still experimental, but for my purposes it has been working quite well (so far, and I have incremental backups for each day).

• Optimal Disk Setup for OLTP SQL Server

  We have a high transaction (lots of reads and writes) database server (running SQL 2005) that is currently set up with a RAID 1 OS partition (C:) and a RAID 5 data/log/tempdb partition (D:). The C: has 2 drives and the D: has 4 drives. The server has around 300 databases ranging from 10MB to 2GB in size. I have been reading up on best practices for partioning the disks, but would like some opinions on our setup since we are so limited in the number of disks. It seems like RAID 10 is popular, but I dont think we could use it with only 6 total disks to work with. Thanks. • Ubuntu server: Delete first folder in directory

  How can I grab the first subfolder in a directory and delete it? I found a script to monitor the free diskspace. It sends an alert email if space runs low, but I want to also delete some unneeded stuff. I have a backup folder where I save daily and monthly backups. I want to delete the first folder since this always the oldest, but I don't know the name of the oldest backup. My folders without Jan-May and Dec: 06-01 07-01 08-01 09-01 10-01 11-01 Friday Monday Saturday Sunday Thursday Tuesday Wednesday How can I delete the first folder "06-01" without knowing its name?

• Windows XP - Repairing Corrupt System32\Config\System File

  My apologies for this long post. I would like to describe the mess I'm in then ask some questions about how to fix it: Starting up my Windows XP SP1 machine I got the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM Tried restarting several times with same results then Googled the problem. Tried the fix described here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair%5Fwindows%5Fxp (since my CPU does not have XD buffer overflow protection I did not set /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as OS Load Option). This did not work. I then found another fix for the problem on hardwareanalysis.com: Basically, boot to dos prompt (or recovery console if available) and make backups of the following files:- c:\windows\system32\config\system (to c:\windows\tmp\system.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\software (to c:\windows\tmp\software.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\sam (to c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\security (to c:\windows\tmp\security.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\default (to c:\windows\tmp\default.bak) then delete the above files (not the backups!) then copy the above files in c:\windows\repair to the c:\windows\system32\config directory restart your computer This did work (and I wish I'd done it first, since it was completely reversible, unlike the first method). However, afterwards I found that all the user accounts on the PC were gone. I resurrected them by copying the backed up security file back into the system32\config folder (I may have copied the SAM file from backup as well, I cannot remember clearly now). Now the PC boots up and I can log in. However things are still not right. I tried to alter one of the user accounts and found I could not access the User Accounts in the Control Panel. Microsoft KB 919292 had a fix for the problem. However, the fix failed with a Windows Installer error: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance. Windows Installer 3.1 was already installed. I reinstalled it but continued to get the Windows Installer error whenever I tried to run the fix in KB 919292. I have since noticed another three problems: 1) Several applications on the PC no longer run, eg Microsoft Word. Shortcuts no longer seem to do anything and if I run the executables directly (eg for Word by running C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Winword.exe) I get a message similar to: "Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application." even though the executable is clearly visible in Windows Explorer (and even though Word actually opens - the error dialog appears after Word has opened. Clicking OK to the error dialog closes Word). 2) One or the other of the two fixes I tried for the original problem caused new user profiles to be created. eg My old user profile under the Documents and Settings folder was Simon. The old one still exists but there is now a new one called Simon.DBQ2515. Obviously the new one is being used because Opera (my browser that still works) no longer sees the bookmarks file under my old profile. 3) Probably as a result of fooling around with the Security file, when I try to boot off the Windows XP CD and run the Recovery Console I am now asked for the administrator password. The only problem is there is no administrator account on the PC. There is one account, LocalAdmin, that has administrative rights but when I entered the password for that account it did not work. It is so long since I originally set up the PC that I cannot remember if the original administrator account ever had a password and, if so, what it was. So, my question is: How can I fix this mess? In particular: 1) Having tried the two fixes linked to above, have I irrepairably damaged the Windows instance, requiring a clean reinstallation of Windows + all applications, or should it be possible to get the machine working correctly again without such drastic measures? 2) Is there any way to get around the administrator password so I can use the Recovery Console again, given that there is no account called "administrator" and the password for the one account with admin privileges does not work (and that, before I started the second fix, I was not asked for an administrator password)? 3) Is there any easy way to fix the problem with the applications that think they are not installed? 4) Is there any easy way to fix the problem of the Windows Installer that does not work, even if reinstalled? • Recovering from bad ownership

  I was going to change the ownership of a directory to apache:apache, but I ended up running: chown -R apache:apache / Bad! Very bad! I knew what was going on when it started saying: chown: changing ownership of `/proc/2694/fd/48': Permission denied That's when I stopped everything (Ctrl+C). The current system I have is a server running virtualbox running CentOS 5. This problem happened inside the VM. Currently, everything seems to be working, but I have not restarted the system yet, and to be honest, I'm afraid that if I did something will break. I do not know chown's order, should I be concerned and assume something will break after a reboot? Is there a way to recover form this problem without having to rely on backups? I do have a daily one, but I thought there may be a simpler way out.

• How do you manage updates without a staging environment: CentOS 6.3

  I am managing about 20 servers, many of them virtual. They are almost all different purpose, and none are clustered. I have a distributed LAMP stack, a few application servers, some build servers, a few KVM hosts. They are CentOS 6.3 mostly with a few Ubuntu (unfortunately). I don't have the resources to setup a staging environment where I can have duplicates of my machines and test updates before rolling them out. I am taking file backups. What I want to know is how you are approaching backing up your Linux systems. I assume you don't just do yum update, but then how are you choosing the packages worthy of updating? When (if ever) are you updating the kernel, etc.. How do you test updates without a staging environment? Snapshot and hope for the best?

• Is this a valid backup strategy for MongoDB?

  I've got a single dedicated server with a MongoDB database of around 10GB. I need to do daily backups, but I can't have downtime with the database. Is it possible to use a replica set on a single disk (with 2 instances of mongod running on different ports), and simply take the secondary one offline and backup the data files to an offsite storage such as S3 (journaling is turned on)? Or would using master/slave be better than a replica set? Is this viable, and if so, what potential problems could I have? If not, how do I conceptualize this to work?

Then, why do I have also these lines in the rsnapshot.conf ? ######################################### # BACKUP INTERVALS # # Must be unique and in ascending order # # i.e. hourly, daily, weekly, etc. # ######################################### interval hourly 6 interval daily 7 interval weekly 4 #interval monthly 3 If I use cron, should I disable them ? thanks ps. I've just realized that in the crontab I still have "hourly" and "daily". Should I then uncomment only the one I use in the crontab ? • Routers with USB plug to connect external storage

  I am just about to buy a new wireless router. I want to be able to hook up a harddrive to it and let the harddrive serve the entire network. I will mostly be storing media and some backups on the drive. I know I could get some kind of NAS but I would prefer to just hook up one of my many unused hard drives directly to my router. It looks like d-link has several products that do this using shareport. If you were wanting to have network storage how would you do it? With a NAS? Using a router with a USB port. Are these systems robust? What router would you buy?

• Is Rsync like subversion, but for a server?

  I'm trying to learn how to use rsync. I want to create daily backs up of my production server. Right now I run the command rsync -azr /var/www/* [email protected]:/var/www Now let's say one day, I want to roll back the /var/www/ directory on my production server to last month's version. How do I tell rsync to retrieve version N? On reading that rsync only copies differences between src and dest, I assumed rsync works like subversion where you commit changes to a destination, and keep track of every version, and with the option to checkout any version at anytime. Is that the way rsync works? It's like subversion but for an entire server? That would be great because then it means I don't have to do full ssh copies for my nightly backups.

• Equivalent of phpMyAdmin for MSSQL?

  Is there any webinterface for administrating MSSQL similar to phpMyAdmin (for MySQL)? I want a self-service setup where developers can create a database through webinterface and upload/download backups of the database without local access. I've considered phpMSAdmin, but it hasn't had a release since 2006 so I'm not sure its worth the effort of setting it up. If there is something else (free or not-so-free) that would be great. My question is similar to this one posted 2 years ago, but no good webinterface was found back then. SQL Web Data Administrator seems interesting, but it lacks a few features - most notably creating new databases (also, not updated since 2007).

• rsync to cifs mount but preserve permissions

  I'm backing up a linux server to a windows share. I'm currently mounting the windows share with cifs and using rsync for incremental backups. File permissions and ownership are not being preserved, as should be expected after reading this samba document: The core CIFS protocol does not provide unix ownership information or mode for files and directories. Because of this, files and directories will generally appear to be owned by whatever values the uid= or gid= options are set, and will have permissions set to the default file_mode and dir_mode for the mount. How can I achieve my goal of preserving unix file permissions while writing to a windows share? Is there another network file system that would allow me to do this? Thanks.

  I have a VM created in VMWare Player. It's VHD is currently sized 17 GB, split among multiple 2 GB files. The host OS is Windows 8. I use CrashPlan in host OS for file backup. The problem is, whenever I use the VM, CrashPlan detects all parth of VHD as altered and backs up the 17 GB VHD. WHat I want is a software that can run on host OS (Windows 8), treat the VHD as a physical hard disk and create incremental backups of the VHD, includeing all files, programs and the OS
