• Converting from a day of week to unix time in PHP

  Hi, I'm trying to get the unix time for date strings that are formatted like so: 'second sunday of march 2010' 'first sunday of november 2010' I was under the impression that strtotime could handle such a string, but apparently not, as this returns false. How can I convert to unix time when given a day of week, which one of those in the month (ie. first, second, etc.), a month and a year.

• Aggregating Excel cell contents that match a label [migrated]

  I'm sure this isn't a terribly difficult thing, but it's not the type of question that easily lends itself to internet searches. I've been assigned a project for work involving a complex spreadsheet. I've done the usual =SUM and other basic Excel formulas, and I've got enough coding background that I'm able to at least fudge my way through VBA, but I'm not certain how to proceed with one part of the task. Simple version: On Sheet 1 I have a list of people (one on each row, person's name in column A), on sheet 2 I have a list of groups (one on each row, group name in column A). Each name in Sheet 1 has its own row, and I have a "Data Validation" dropdown menu where you choose the group each person belongs to. That dropdown is sourced from Sheet 2, where each group has a row. So essentially the data validation source for Sheet 1's "Group" column is just "=Sheet2!$a1:a100" or whatever. The problem is this: I want each group row in Sheet 2 to have a formula which results in a list of all the users which have been assigned to that group on Sheet 1. What I mean is something the equivalent of "select * from PeopleTab where GROUP = ThisGroup". The resulting cell would just stick the names together like "Bob Smith, Joe Jones, Sally Sanderson" I've been Googling for hours but I can't think of a way to phrase my search query to get the results I want. Here's an example of desired result (Dash-delimited. Can't find a way to make it look nice, table tags don't seem to work here): (Sheet 1) Bob Smith - Group 1 (selected from dropdown) Joe Jones - Group 2 (selected from dropdown) Sally Sanderson - Group 1 (selected from dropdown) (Sheet 2) Group 1 - Bob Smith, Sally Sanderson (result of formula) Group 2 - Joe Jones (result of formula) What formula (or even what function) do I use on that second column of sheet 2 to make a flat list out of the members of that group?

• Software solution from the 2000's, should I attempt to patch or remake the whole thing?

  I was sent out to discuss a system that a certain company is currently using and what should be done with it. The company manufactures various carton displays. This system was developed to keep track of clients, orders and prices. Lots have happened since the system was created and the system is now, as the manager described it, "locked up" and "problematic", which I translate as "not dynamic" and "unstable". Some info about the system It was developed around the year 2000 Fairly small system, 2-5 users, 6 forms, ~8 tables with average quantities of data Built on early Visual Basic, forms created with the drag and drop design. Interface is basically just a window with a menu and some forms Uses MSSQL database (SQL2005 server) to store data and ODBC driver to query, data was migrated from excel before this system, and before excel it was handled, calculated and written by hand and paper Users work in Microsoft XP environment (and up) Their main problem is that they can't adjust and calculate prices, can't add new carton types etc, correctly anymore because they can't (or rather, they don't know how to) touch the data on the server. I suggested 3 possible solutions Attempt to patch the current system Create a fresh new interface (preferably similar environment, VB.net or VB based) Bring it back to an Excel solution, considering it is such a small system There might be more options, but these are the ones I could think of. My questions are What should I recommend and why? What is or could be the pros and cons of these alternatives? Are there other (possibly better) alternatives?

• Executing commands containing space in bash

  I have a file named cmd that contains a list of unix commands as follows: hostname pwd ls /tmp cat /etc/hostname ls -la ps -ef | grep java cat cmd I have another script that executes the commands in cmd as: IFS=$'\n' clear for cmds in `cat cmd` do if [ $cmds ] ; then $cmds; echo "****************************"; fi done The problem is that commands in cmd without spaces run fine, but those with spaces are not correctly interpreted by the script. • Bash commands not executed when through cron job - PHP

  Hi there! I have a cron job running a PHP script every five minutes; the PHP script executes two bash commands at the end of the script. I know the script is running due to a log file it appends to. When I run the PHP script manually via the Ubuntu Gnome Terminal both bash commands execute flawlessly; however when the PHP script is triggered via cron, the two bash commands are not ran. • Execute Oracle RAC cluster commands via Solaris RBAC?

  Executing Oracle RAC cluster management commands such as $ORA_CRS_HOME/bin/crs_start requires root permissions. Using Solaris RBAC (Role-Based Access Control), one can give a non-root user permissions to execute those commands, but the commands still fail internally. Example: $pfexec /opt/11.1.0/crs/bin/crs_stop SomeArg CRS-0259: Owner of the resource does not belong to the group. Is there a complete RBAC solution for Oracle RAC or does the executor need to be root?   Hi, I am new to PL/SQL, I'm trying to execute the commands that I learned at the course. VARIABLE area NUMBER DECLARE radius NUMBER(2) := &s_radius; pi CONSTANT NUMBER := 3.14; BEGIN :area := pi * radius * radius; END; I understand that I can run this using SqlPlus, but I remember my teacher was running this from the web browser using Application Express. I try to run the same commands there, at HOME SQLSQL Commands, but I keep getting the error "ORA-00900: invalid SQL statement" . Can you help me run it in Application Express or point me to a way where I can use an editor to run these course exercises? Thanks!

• How to make a daemon which will accept arbitrary commands

  Right now the program can be launched in a linux terminal. Once running you can type various commands and the program will do stuff on the machine until the user quits. I would like to make the program into a service that the user runs and it goes to the background. Then the user should be able to make commands to it. Like start and stop, and write something to a log and whatever else my program does. Note that I need to send it arbitrary commands that my program will handle, not just start and stop. Maybe this means it is no longer a daemon - I dont know. How do I do this? Also, if this is not too hard, I would like to be able to run multiple instances of this service. But it is not essential.

In order to do that I need some way of getting commands from php to the stdin for this backgrounded job.   HOST = same host all the time, accepts multiple connection. I have a dedicated server and I will buy extra IP's. Socket 1 connects to HOST:PORT, from IP-1 Socket 2 connects to HOST:PORT, from IP-1 Socket 3 connects to HOST:PORT, from IP-1 Socket 4 connects to HOST:PORT, from IP-2 Socket 5 connects to HOST:PORT, from IP-2 Socket 6 connects to HOST:PORT, from IP-2 After creating all sockets I want to access them easy as UNIX sockets from PHP. /sys/socket1 /sys/socket2 /sys/socket3 /sys/socket4 /sys/socket5 /sys/socket6 I want the sockets to work in background (like daemon) and I want to be able to connect from PHP to any of this sockets and RECV/SEND whatever I want. I saw "socat" and I think that's the solution for me, please tell me how to use socat, or how to do it other way. Thankyou!

  I need to start using GIT for my projects from now on and I need to use some UNIX commands. but no matter what I do, I always receive "command not found" error. I installed MacPorts, but still cant run any UNIX command :/ When I try ls, I get the error below, same for sudo, or any other command: -bash: ls: command not found and when I try $PATH, I get the lines below: hakan-yilmaz-MacBook-Pro:~ hakanyilmaz$ **$PATH** -bash: /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/bin:/opt/subversion/bin/:PATH: No such file or directory I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.6 I spent 2-3 days and kept googling and trying everything I found at forums, but no success. SOLUTION: I opened .bash_profile with TextWrangler and removed everything else than export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH Then, I reboot that Mac, and WORKING!!!!

  There's a lot of contradictory information about Unix server partitioning out on the internet, so I need some advice on how to proceed. So far, on the servers I in our test environment I didn't really care about partitioning and I configured a single monolithic / plus a swap partition. This partitioning scheme doesn't seem like a good idea for our production servers. I have found a good starting point here, but it seems very vague on the details. Basically I have a server on which I will be running a basic LAMP stack (Apache, PHP, and MySQL). It will have to handle file uploads (up to 2GB). The system has a 2TB RAID 1 array. I plan to set : / 100GB /var 1000GB (apache files and mysql files will be here), /tmp 800GB (handles the php tmp file) /home 96GB swap 4GB Does this sound sane, or am I over-complicating things?

  So we were trying to transfer files from unix server to a windows server 2003. I currently don't have any visibility on the unix server since it is being handled by another team. So in order for the 2 servers to establish connection, they sent us a public key which they said that we need to register on our windows server 2003 machine. can anyone help me? i cant seem to find anything about registering this public key generated by putty on a windows server 2003. there's no directory to put the public key(like in linux authorized_keys). Any help will be appreciated. thanks in advance. EDIT: we're trying to transfer file via pscp if this info is needed.

  It's easy enough to write a simple script that works like the which(1) command from unix, which searches for a given command along the PATH. Unfortunately, the CreateProcess function is not so simple, so this type of script does not give accurate results: CreateProcess looks in a number of directories not in the PATH, looks for files with all of the extensions listed in PATHEXT, etc. Worse, who knows what might be added in future versions of Windows? Anyway, my question is: is there a robust, accurate which(1) equivalent for Windows, which always tells you what file CreateProcess would find?

  I have a VM running Ubuntu Server 9.10 running a basic web server setup. Whenever I run an apt function it will pause for around 1 minute at 'Waiting for headers...'. It will eventually clear through and continue as normal but it is a bit of an annoyance. Everything else on the server seems to run fine. Any ideas?

  I need help for the below mentioned scenario: A Dot-matrix printer is physically connected to the Linux machine ( e.g. Ubuntu-10.04 , it can be any unix/linux flavour) From this linux machine, when I take a RDP to the Windows NT-4.0 TS, I run the DOS-based application. Now I want to print few pages from this DOS-based application to the Ubuntu's printer, When I am in RDP-Session. When I followed the samba-printing documentation, I am able to print from GUI-based apps like Notepad, MS WORD and so forth; but not able to print from the command prompt of Windows. Any idea how to do this ? [ WINDOWS MACHINE IS STRICTLY NT-4.0 2000 TS ]

• How to install Python 2.7 w/ unix libs on cygwin

  I have been trying for about a week to get this to work. Obviously getting Python 2.6 is easy - just install the cygwin package with setup.exe. Installing the windows version of Python2.7 was also easy, but I could not access the Unix Modules. So I've been trying to install Python from source, but it seems every time I fix one make error there is another waiting just behind it. Getting rather fed up with the whole thing & thinking someone else must have either done this or figured out it is impossible. I feel installing Linux would have been the easier route . . .
