  • Hotkey to shut down from login screen?

    I used to run 9.04 on my server and used to be able to use Alt-T, Alt-S to shut the system down from the login screen. It was using a KDE login screen. Now I've upgraded to 10.04 and use the Gnome login screen and I can't see any keyboard shortcuts to shutdown the server. Is there a shortcut and if so, what is it? Further info - I would normally shut down the server without turning on the monitor, which was easy using the keyboard shortcuts. Doing it with a mouse is not so easy without the monitor being on.

  • How do you off load work from the database?

    In at least the web development field, web servers are everywhere but are backed by very few database servers. As web servers get hit with requests they execute large queries on the database, putting the server under heavy load. While web servers are very easy to scale, db servers are much harder (at least from what I know), making them a precious resource. One way I've heard from some answers here to take load off the database is to offload the work to the web server. Easy, until you realize that now you've got a ton of traffic internally as a web server tries to run SELECT TOP 3000 (presumably to crunch the results on its own), which still slows things down. What are other ways to take load off the database?

  • What makes it hard to protect from hacks/bots in BF3 and Quake Live?

    After playing these games, asking other players/admins, and reading online I am led to believe that Quake Live and Battlefield 3 are frequented by bots and there are plenty of hacks of various kinds. I'm confused how this is possible, or even easy seeing how many players have access to these kinds of "tools" (sic). Isn't it possible for the game authors to digitally sign the game executables so that when they run, the server can ensure only the allowed client is sending commands, thus preventing any kind of abuse? I.e. every player command would be signed by a private key, or symmetrically encrypted (not sure which would make more sense). I understand that players can look at the running executable's behavior (memory etc.), but if games are apparently so easy to hack, shouldn't most apps be hacked as well (e.g. Skype, all DRM running on Windows etc.)?

  • Why is Backbone.js a bad option in the Technology radar 2012 of thoughtworks?

    In the latest Technology Radar 2012 they state that Backbone.js has pushed to far on it's MVC abstraction and say that Knockout.js or Angular.js should be used instead. I cannot get why they think that Backbone.js model is bad, for me it's just a way to create a standard so people can have some kind of roadmap to dev frontend JS without Spaghetti code. Also for me Angular and Knockout solve a different problem, I like both of them but having to code all MVC classes is something I think is kind of a rework. The thing is simple easy extendable and fast to learn, comes with a lot of goodies and is easy to combine with other Frameworks. (see Knockback.js) Can anybody tell me what made it so bad to their eyes ?

  • Upload ICS (calandar) file to my server

    I want to upload my ICS file to my server, well this is the easy part. What I really want is to be able to share this *.ics file with 2-3 people so they can edit. I have currently uploaded the file on the www/ (root) mydomain.com.au/myfile.ics of my server and added it to my Email/Cal client. Was all looking ok until I tried to save changes. Can someone please direct me to some documentation on how I do this properly. The easy solution would be to upload to google, but I would rather learn how to manage the file myself. Thank you

  • Looking for recommendations for a server-side newsletter program

    Hello- I'm currently using a server-side SQL based mailing list program called Php-List on multiple sites and it works fairly well. But installation and setup is quite cumbersome, quirky and the interface is not well organized... neither is the code... with pieces all over the place in random fashion. Customizing the "look & feel" and full site integration are both tedious and painful. Upgrading the version is made more complex since multiple edits need to be manually transferred each time. Also, probably due to a poor English translation, descriptions and instructions within certain areas of the user interface are contradictory and unclear. You just have to play with it and remember what you did last time it worked. It's supposed to be so my customers can send out their own newsletters... after supplying a written tutorial, about half of them seem to stumble through it okay and the other half just hire me to do it for them. So not quite easy enough for most average people to use. I'm looking for something that's as easy for them as using a blog or discussion forum. It also must be easier to set up and integrate into a site than Php-List. I have no problem getting dirty and writing CSS or HTML by hand. Nor do I have any problem editing the program code. Perhaps what I'm looking for is a solution that is more organized, a better GUI, and template or "skin" based. Therefore, if I spend many hours customizing a skin, I can simply update the program and re-use my custom skin without having to reproduce the tedious setup over and over. (I currently maintain a list of about 25 things I must manually edit or add to multiple files in multiple directories each time I install or upgrade Php-List) A great example of what I'm looking for is very much like WordPress or phpBB. They're both easy to install and customize yet powerful and packed full of features. They're also VERY well organized making customization less painful. So enough yammering for now... anyone know of something, besides Php-List, with many of the same features as Php-List; maintaining a mailing list with a server-side database, custom sign-up pages, automatic opt-in opt-out, allowing custom HTML newsletter templates, etc?   • International multi-OS keyboard layout for both coding and surfing?

    So yes, the problem has been raised in parts multiple times already. Still I'm looking for a keyboard layout that has the following features: Easy on fingers (Dvorak-like layouts welcome) Easy for coding Includes German characters (typing ä with AltGr-p is not ok). Works well with web-browsing (Ctrl-t and Ctrl-w on one hand, left one very much preferred, since that's where my ex-CapsLock, now Ctrl lies) Works well with default Emacs bindings Works on both Windows and Linux (at least easily installable) I've looked at Dvorak and Neo, they both have a "shortcut problem", i.e. web-browsing and most frequent Emacs combinations use both parts of the keyboard. Using right Ctrl is usually not an option, since it'll give me RSI much faster than keeping QWERTY/Z. Funnily enough, mirroring the default Neo layout would probably be enough for me. So, any ideas?

  • How to quantify product work in Resume?

    One of things I do in my Resume is try to quantify the impact my work has had in the particular company I was with at the time. The reason is it shows the value my work had added to the business. Is this what you guys do as well or am I the only one? In my previous job this was easy as I worked on short/medium internal applications and it was fairly easy to measure end result. For example, external consulting company quoted $50,000 for an application Business Services department wanted I completed it in 3 days so I say I saved the company $48,000. I have been in my current job for 3 years but all of it has been on 1 single well established product. About 30% work is maintenance and 70% work is on new modules. I have worked on various modules like API (WCF), Security (2 factor authentication), etc. How should I quantify work on modules? Many thanks.

  • Design difficulty for multiple panel forms [closed]

    I have form that consists of multiple panel on the right, a treeview on the left and a terminal richtextbox on the bottom. When i click on a node of the treeview i bring up the panel that is attached with the node. For example i have 10 nodes on the treeview, i have 10 panels that are attached to this nodes. On every panel, i have many textboxes, labels, comboboxes etc. I don't dynamically construct and dispose the items on the panels, i create the items in the designer file of the project. In that case, there is a problem. I really find it difficult to align or place items on the panel because there seems a lot of aligning lines on the screen. What should be done to make the design of the panels easy? I don't want to construct items dynamically. Do i have to do that dynamically or is there a design procedure that make this process easy?

  • "Unclutter" units in RTS game

    For intentional reasons, certain units in the game I'm currently programming don't have any collision detection and response among each other. This enables them to clutter right on top of each other. This is a wanted behavior, since there will be situations in the game when the player does want them to stack like that. However, I want to make the process of uncluttering them easy for the player, so that they just have to press a hotkey or click some button on the screen and have the units disperse just enough so it's easy to select a group of them with the mouse (if they stand on top of each other one mouseclick selects all units). How could I do this without running a brute force N^2 nearest neighbor search on all units?
