• The perils of double-dash comments [T-SQL]

  I was checking my Twitter feed on my way in to work this morning and was alerted to an interesting blog post by Valentino Vranken that highlights a problem regarding the OLE DB Source in SSIS. In short, using double-dash comments in SQL statements within the OLE DB Source can cause unexpected results. It really is quite an important read if you’re developing SSIS packages so head over to SSIS OLE DB Source, Parameters And Comments: A Dangerous Mix! and be educated. Note that the problem is solved in SSIS2012 and Valentino explains exactly why. If reading Valentino’s post has switched your brain into “learn mode” perhaps also check out my post SSIS: SELECT *... or select from a dropdown in an OLE DB Source component? which highlights another issue to be aware of when using the OLE DB Source. • How To Get Google+ Invites?

  Google Plus is a new social networking service from Google and it’s aimed to compete with the social networking giant Facebook. Google’s attempts at social networking in the past were never a hit (few of them were miserable fails – Google Wave, Google Buzz) but this time Google seems to be getting things. Google Plus is an invite only service at the moment and you can’t access it without an initiation. So far Google sent invitations to selected bloggers and high profile web users. If you want an invite to Google Plus visit official Google Plus invitation request page and register your email id. There is no word from Google on when the invites will be distributed to public users. Hopefully Google should roll out invitations soon. • Content theft - Where can I go from here?

  I am the webmaster of a very successful blog in a fairly small niche. Recently our success has started to bite us with people copying posts on the site without consent and trying to pass them off as their own work. Most sites stop as soon as you contact them but there is one in particular that is a blogger site which persists in passing off our content as their own. Every post we find we report to Google and they have been fairly good at taking the posts offline within a day or two but this isn't good enough or a long term solution. Given the nature of what is being blogged about after 24 hours the post is pretty much useless so I need some way to just stop them from taking our content? Any ideas? I don't want to go down the route of using a third party for people to get our RSS feed but I guess that is one option?

  Recently I installed Google Analytics on a Blogger account. I was shocked when I saw load times for the landing pages between 10 and 60 seconds. The blog uses Facebook like-box, twitter recent messages box, live traffic feed widget and Lockerz share buttons. Almost every post in this blog contains YouTube iframes which aren't nowhere near fast. Are there any well-known solutions for this type of problems? Should I use some jQuery plugins for speed optimization, how can I make the facebook/twitter boxes load faster?

• flash twitter and facebook widgets

  I'm stuck with a crappy digital signage platform that only renders .html and .swf files (and rss feeds) No customization of rss, only way to show something dynamic in a pretty way is to use flash. The question: is there any way to embed javascript in swf files or somehow have facebook and twitter flash plugins? I looked for ready-made swf widgets for the job but didn't find any, if there is any flash widget that serves a facebook and/or twitter feed please give me a link. (sorry if the question is out of context but these things usually run a stripped-down browser to display everything so its pretty much a web page run from a file and not a web server)

This nice interactive Bing Maps mash up lets you easily visualize all the FIFA World Cup Stadiums by flying across them. • Finally found a replacement for my.live.com&hellip;

  As I had alluded to before, the transition of http://my.live.com/ to http://my.msn.com/ caused me serious grief. I've been an RSS addict for many, many years and I found the my.live.com UI to be the ultimate RSS reader and gateway to the web. It had been my home page for a long time.  My.msn has a LONG way to go before it matches the elegance and performance of my.live. The site I ended up going with is http://www.netvibes.com/ .   It’s the closest thing I could find that could do four column tiles with a reasonable amount of information density .  I’d still prefer a lot less “chrome” and better use of space, but it’s as close as I’m going to get… One feature I really do like about netvibes, is the pagination feature.  The built in feed reader is also quite nice… All-in-all, I’d recommend netvibes…

• Is there a quasi-standard set of attributes to annotate thread safety, immutability etc.?

  Except for a blog post here and there, describing the custom attributes someone created, but that do not seem to get any traction - like one describing how to enforce immutability, another one on Documenting Thread Safety, modeling the attributes after JCIP annotations - is there any standard emerging? Anything MS might be planning for the future? This is something that should be standard, if there's to be any chance of interoperability between libraries concurrency-wise. Both for documentation purposes, and also to feed static / dynamic test tools. If MS isn't doing anything in that direction, it could be done on CodePlex - but I couldn't find anything there, either. <opinion>Concurrency and thread safety are really hard in imperative and object-languages like C# and Java, we should try to tame it, until we hopefully switch to more appropriate languages.</opinion>
