You'll be surprised at how often you'll use event receivers instead of Workflow in order to implement functionality in Sharepoint, so it's probably a good idea to know more about them. And who better to get you started with a simple guide to using them than Charles Lee?

I will be speaking at the SQL Server UK User Group event in Manchester on 16.07.2009. I am going to be talking about data mining again and how it isn’t all statistics and people with PhDs from Oxford. Come join me and the excellent Chris Testa-O’Neill. I have an application that runs through various tasks as an automated process.
My client would like me to create a file in a given folder for each task as a way to flag when each task completes. They prefer this to a database flag because they can be notified by the file system rather than continually polling a database table.
I can do this but creating and deleting files as flags feels clunky. Is there a more elegant approach to notifying a third-party of an event?
I installed the Tizen SDK 2.0 which uses Eclipse 3.7.1 as an IDE on Ubuntu 12.10 64bit. When trying to create a Tizen Web Project I got the following error message from Eclipse:
Unhandled event loop exception
No more handles [Unknown Mozilla path (MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME not set)]
The problem is that Eclipse is configured to use Xulrunner as a headless browser inside the IDE. Xulrunner is not in the repositories for Ubuntu 12.10 any more, therefore Eclipse is not able to find the libraries.

Event reminder software is being used my more and more people every day because it is a great way to remind you of important events coming up and to stay organized for each one. There are many differ... [Author: Jeff Schuman - Computers and Internet - June 08, 2010]
We have a Windows Server 2003 R2 running Service Pack 2. It is a domain controller (Global Catalog) and our main internal DNS server. We run a System State backup of the machine to back up Active Directory information and save the backup to a different server.
This server has a single drive (C:), and we do have Shadow Copies enabled for the volume (which are completing successfully).
The System State Backup is now failing with the following listed in the backup logs:
Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt
1. "Event Log Writer" has reported an error 0x800423f4. This is part of
System State. The backup cannot
continue.
Error returned while creating the
volume shadow copy:800423f4 Aborting
Backup.
The operation did not successfully
complete.
When doing a vssadmin list writers, we sometimes get the following reported for the Event Log Writer (other times it says that it is in the state of "[1] Stable" with "No error"):
Writer name: 'Event Log Writer' Writer Id:
{eee8c692-67ed-4250-8d86-390603070d00}
Writer Instance Id:
{c7194e96-868a-49e5-ba99-89b61977753c}
State: [8] Failed Last error:
Retryable error
We have tried disabling the event log service via the registry, rebooting, deleting the event log files from the drive, then re-enabling the service via the registry and rebooting, but this didn't seem to solve the issue.
We also get an error message when in the event viewer when trying to open the log for the "File Replication Service" of "Unable to complete the operation on 'File Replication Service'. The security descriptor structure is invalid."
I have searched the error via Google and tried a number of different things, but nothing has seemed to help.
Any suggestions on what we might try to get the Event Log Writer to behave would be greatly appreciated!
Two of my AD controllers (both running DNS service) appear to be having a similar issue. Both are throwing lots of events in the DNS events that look like this:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: DNS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5504
Date: 5/24/2010
Time: 11:51:38 AM
User: N/A
Computer: ALPHA
Description:
The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a packet from 76.74.137.6. The packet will be rejected. The event data contains the DNS packet.
That will come with the same event, same time, with a packet from 76.74.137.7 as well. I know this is "Information" not an error, but since it is new and different it bothers me (yes, I fear unexplained change!)
Both machines are running Windows 2003 R2 SP2. The DNS servers are not exposed to the internet.
Both DNS servers are configured to use OpenDNS for Forwarders.
For both servers, this started about a week ago.
Any thoughts on:
1) should I be concerned?
2) how can I stop/fix this?
To keep it interesting, I have a 3rd AD / DNS box. Same domain, different Active Directory site. Same forwarders, yet doesn't have this issue.
