• How to reinstall Mac OS X on OS X/Linux dual-boot system?

- by strangeronyourtrain
My setup: I have a MacBook Pro 5,5 with a Mac OS X Snow Leopard partition and a Linux partition. I use rEFIt to boot into Linux. I didn't use Boot Camp when I originally installed Linux; instead, I manually created the partition (with either Disk Utility in OS X or Gparted on a Linux live CD--I don't recall which one) and then installed Linux on it from a live CD. The problem: My OS X partition is corrupt, and I need to reinstall Snow Leopard. Since I installed rEFIt from within OS X, I'm concerned that wiping the OS X partition will prevent me from booting into my Linux partition. How can I do this without losing access to my Linux partition? Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on the partition I reserved for it, or will it automatically overwrite the entire drive? And if I do the fresh OS X install and then install rEFIt again, will it automatically recognize my Linux partition? Thanks for any tips! Specs: MacBook Pro 5,5 (Mid-2009); Snow Leopard 10.6.7/64-bit Sabayon Linux, 2.6.36 kernel EDIT/UPDATE: Thanks, but the situation has taken a more complicated turn: I tried to reinstall Snow Leopard from the DVD, but it refused to install onto my Mac partition, claiming: "The disk cannot be used to start up your computer." Disk Utility wouldn't let me resize the partition or create a new one, and it doesn't see my Linux partition. It only displays the two partitions "Macintosh HD" and Linux Swap. I can, however, see all the partitions from Linux. This is the partition table as shown in Gparted: And the output of "fdisk -l" is: WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted. Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders, total 488397168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 409639 204819+ ee GPT /dev/sda2 409640 349590464 174590412+ af HFS / HFS+ /dev/sda3 483122745 488392064 2634660 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda4 * 349590465 483122744 66766140 83 Linux Partition table entries are not in disk order I wonder if this is because I originally partitioned my disk with Gparted instead of OS X's Disk Utility (at this point, I don't recall whether I used Gparted or Disk Utility). In any case, it doesn't seem safe to do any reformatting with Disk Utility now, as I'm afraid it will wipe sda2 ("Macintosh HD") as well as sda4 (my Linux partition). So... I'm hoping to find a solution that doesn't involve wiping my entire hard disk. Would it be safe/possible to use Gparted to erase sda2 ("Macintosh HD") and then use the Snow Leopard DVD to install OS X onto just sda2 without touching the other partitions? Thanks for any insight!

• Disabling CPU management

- by Tiffany Walker
If I add the following processor.max_cstate=0 to the kernel command line for boot up, does that disable all CPU power management and throttling? I also found: http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Linux/Administration/A_3492-Avoiding-CPU-speed-scaling-in-modern-Linux-distributions-Running-CPU-at-full-speed-Tips.html The link talks of Change CPU governor from 'ondemand' to 'performance' for all CPUs/cores and disabling kondemand from kernel. • Unable to access Windows share

- by mbnoimi
I've installed Alfresco 4.2.d under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS; Everything done fine except I can't access it from Windows share although I got the link from Alfresco explorer which is: file:///%5C%5CECSA%5CAlfresco%5CSites%5Cswsdp%5CdocumentLibrary%5CAgency%20Files%5CImages%5Ccoins.JPG I tried to access it from: \\ECSA but I failed too so I made a ping (192.168.0.70 is server IP) then I got: C:\Users\user>ping 192.168.0.70 Pinging 192.168.0.70 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.0.70: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.0.70: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.0.70: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.0.70: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Ping statistics for 192.168.0.70: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms C:\Users\user>ping ECSA Ping request could not find host ECSA. • Cannot ping Localhost so I can't shutdown Tomcat

- by gav
Hi, I installed Tomcat 6 using the tar-ball via wget. Startup of the server is fine but on shutdown I get a timeout exception. root@88:/usr/local/tomcat/logs# /usr/local/tomcat/bin/shutdown.sh Using CATALINA_BASE: /usr/local/tomcat Using CATALINA_HOME: /usr/local/tomcat Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /usr/local/tomcat/temp Using JRE_HOME: /usr Using CLASSPATH: /usr/local/tomcat/bin/bootstrap.jar 30-Mar-2010 17:33:41 org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina stopServer SEVERE: Catalina.stop: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketConnect(Native Method) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.doConnect(PlainSocketImpl.java:333) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connectToAddress(PlainSocketImpl.java:195) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(PlainSocketImpl.java:182) at java.net.SocksSocketImpl.connect(SocksSocketImpl.java:366) ... I read that this might be because I have a firewall blocking incoming connections on the shutdown port (8005). I have a default Ubuntu 9.04 installation running on a VPS with no rules in my iptables. How can I tell if that port is blocked? How can I check that the server is listening for connections on 8005? Bizarrely pinging localhost or the IP of my server fails from the server itself, whereas pinging the IP of my server from another machine succeeds. -------- EDIT -------- (In reply to Davey) Thanks for all the tips and suggestions! netstat -nlp Active Internet connections (only servers) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:8005 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 9611/java tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:3306 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 28505/mysqld tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:8080 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 9611/java tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN ... • iptable CLUSTERIP won't work

- by Rad Akefirad
We have some requirements which explained here. We tried to satisfy them without any success as described. Here is the brief information: Here are requirements: 1. High Availability 2. Load Balancing Current Configuration: Server #1: one static (real) IP for each 10.17.243.11 Server #2: one static (real) IP for each 10.17.243.12 Cluster (virtual and shared among all servers) IP: 10.17.243.15 I tried to use CLUSTERIP to have the cluster IP by the following: on the server #1 iptables -I INPUT -i eth0 -d 10.17.243.15 -j CLUSTERIP --new --hashmode sourceip --clustermac 01:00:5E:00:00:20 --total-nodes 2 --local-node 1 on the server #2 iptables -I INPUT -i eth0 -d 10.17.243.15 -j CLUSTERIP --new --hashmode sourceip --clustermac 01:00:5E:00:00:20 --total-nodes 2 --local-node 2 When we try to ping 10.17.243.15 there is no reply. And the web service (tomcat on port 8080) is not accessible either. However we managed to get the packets on both servers by using TCPDUMP. Some useful information: iptable roules (iptables -L -n -v): Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 21775 packets, 1470K bytes) pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination 0 0 CLUSTERIP all -- eth0 * 0.0.0.0/0 10.17.243.15 CLUSTERIP hashmode=sourceip clustermac=01:00:5E:00:00:20 total_nodes=2 local_node=1 hash_init=0 Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes) pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT 14078 packets, 44M bytes) pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination Log messages: ... kernel: [ 7.329017] e1000e: eth3 NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: None ... kernel: [ 7.329133] e1000e 0000:05:00.0: eth3: 10/100 speed: disabling TSO ... kernel: [ 7.329567] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth3: link becomes ready ... kernel: [ 71.333285] ip_tables: (C) 2000-2006 Netfilter Core Team ... kernel: [ 71.341804] nf_conntrack version 0.5.0 (16384 buckets, 65536 max) ... kernel: [ 71.343168] ipt_CLUSTERIP: ClusterIP Version 0.8 loaded successfully ... kernel: [ 108.456043] device eth0 entered promiscuous mode ... kernel: [ 112.678859] device eth0 left promiscuous mode ... kernel: [ 117.916050] device eth0 entered promiscuous mode ... kernel: [ 140.168848] device eth0 left promiscuous mode TCPDUMP while pinging: tcpdump: listening on eth0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 65535 bytes 12:11:55.335528 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 0, offset 0, flags [DF], proto ICMP (1), length 84) 10.17.243.1 > 10.17.243.15: ICMP echo request, id 16162, seq 2390, length 64 12:11:56.335778 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 0, offset 0, flags [DF], proto ICMP (1), length 84) 10.17.243.1 > 10.17.243.15: ICMP echo request, id 16162, seq 2391, length 64 12:11:57.336010 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 0, offset 0, flags [DF], proto ICMP (1), length 84) 10.17.243.1 > 10.17.243.15: ICMP echo request, id 16162, seq 2392, length 64 12:11:58.336287 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 0, offset 0, flags [DF], proto ICMP (1), length 84) 10.17.243.1 > 10.17.243.15: ICMP echo request, id 16162, seq 2393, length 64 And there is no ping reply as I said. • FreeType2 Bitmap to System::Drawing::Bitmap.

- by Dennis Roche
Hi, I'm trying to convert a FreeType2 bitmap to a System::Drawing::Bitmap in C++/CLI. FT_Bitmap has a unsigned char* buffer that contains the data to write. I have got somewhat working save it disk as a *.tga, but when saving as *.bmp it renders incorrectly. I believe that the size of byte[] is incorrect and that my data is truncated. Any hints/tips/ideas on what is going on here would be greatly appreciated. Links to articles explaining byte layout and pixel formats etc. would be helpful. Thanks!! C++/CLI code. • ping/ssh networking problem with server from 1 particular windows xp laptop

- by user47650
I am experiencing an odd problem with one specific server at my data centre connecting from my laptop. Basically the server is accessible from other machines in my house, but not from 1 particular laptop which is running windows XP. I have setup tcpdump on the server and wireshark on the laptop, and I can see ping echo request and reply packets that actually make it back to the wireshark on the laptop, but nothing shows in the ping console output like so; $ ping xxx.55.32.255 Pinging xxx.55.32.255 with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Ping statistics for xxx.55.32.255: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss), But I can see from the wireshark on my local laptop that the ping reply gets back... No. Time Source Destination Protocol Info 46 3.964474 192.168.1.64 xxx.55.32.255 ICMP Echo (ping) request Frame 46 (74 bytes on wire, 74 bytes captured) Ethernet II, Src: Intel_31:d3:01 (00:19:d2:42:c3:01), Dst: ThomsonT_01:b8:2c (00:14:7f:02:b9:3c) Internet Protocol, Src: 192.168.1.64 (192.168.1.64), Dst: xxx.55.32.255 (xxx.55.32.255) Internet Control Message Protocol No. Time Source Destination Protocol Info 48 4.119060 xxx.55.32.255 192.168.1.64 ICMP Echo (ping) reply Frame 48 (74 bytes on wire, 74 bytes captured) Ethernet II, Src: ThomsonT_01:b8:2c (00:14:7f:01:b8:2c), Dst: Intel_21:c3:01 (10:20:d2:31:c3:01) Internet Protocol, Src: xxx.55.32.255 (xxx.55.32.255), Dst: 192.168.1.64 (192.168.1.64) Internet Control Message Protocol obviously I have disabled the windows firewall and there is nothing in the windows event log. There is nothing else obviously strange about the server as it is the same build as other servers that I can connect to fine.

• Connecting to localhost resolves 127.0.0.1 but connects with external IP [Linux, Debian]

- by skgsergio
I'm having a problem with a dedicated server, I don't known if it's the default behavior but this is the problem: If I connect to a service located on the server with localhost the service gets as source IP the external IP. Let me show an example, I use netcat for listening on 127.0.0.1:4444 xxxxxx # nc -vv -l -s 127.0.0.1 -p 4444 listening on [127.0.0.1] 4444 ... Lets check if it's ok: xxxxxx ~ # netstat -atnp | grep 4444 tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:4444 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 14038/nc Ok lets connect: xxxxxx ~ # nc -vv 127.0.0.1 4444 localhost [127.0.0.1] 4444 (?) open Return to the tty that have the listening process and I get this: connect to [127.0.0.1] from xxxxxx.net [176.31.xxx.xx] 50354 So that's the problem. I have a server daemon that have to listen on localhost and checks that the ip is 127.0.0.1 when the client connects but for some reason when I connect to localhost it reports the external ip... If I do the same with IPv6 it works as excepted... Detects connection as localhost (::1). Some info that can be useful: "localhost" resolves without problems to 127.0.0.1 xxxxxx ~ # ping -c1 localhost PING localhost (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=0.086 ms Nothing weird on my hosts file, I think... xxxxxx ~ # grep -v ^# /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain 176.31.xxx.xx xxxxxx.net ns1.xxxxxx.net ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback feo0::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters ff02::3 ip6-allhosts And ifconfig reports all ok... eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr e0:69:95:d8:30:a1 inet addr:176.31.xxx.xx Bcast:176.31.108.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: 2001:41d0:8:xxxx::/64 Scope:Global inet6 addr: 2001:41d0:8:xxxx:x:xx:xx:xx/64 Scope:Global inet6 addr: fe80::e269:95ff:fed8:30a1/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:16916 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:16914 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:8410679 (8.0 MiB) TX bytes:10539881 (10.0 MiB) Interrupt:28 Base address:0xe000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:5570 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:5570 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:744490 (727.0 KiB) TX bytes:744490 (727.0 KiB)

• Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

- by Peter
Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong? • Linux not picking up new partition correctly on emc pseudo device

- by James
Hi We have a database server running oracle rac. We were recently running out of space on the main LUN that it is attached to. I created a new 100GB LUN and concatenated this onto the existing LUN creating a new MetaLUN. After some messing I managed to get linux to recognise the new space. I then created a new partition in on the pseudo device, to use the new space. Previously when I have done this on other system the next step is to create an ASM disk on the new partition and add this disk to the oracle disk group. This however fails. I am aware of various issues with ASM and powerpath, but I don't think this is the issue here. As on while investigating the issue I discovered that one of the underlying logical device is not reflecting the size change. • Cannot connect to MySQL Server on RHEL 5.7

- by Jeffrey Wong
I have a standard MySQL Server running on Red hat 5.7. I have edited /etc/my.cnf to specify the bind address as my server's public IP address. [mysqld] datadir=/var/lib/mysql socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock user=mysql # Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x # clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package). old_passwords=1 # Disabling symbolic-links is recommended to prevent assorted security risks ; # to do so, uncomment this line: # symbolic-links=0 [mysqld_safe] log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid bind-address=171.67.88.25 port=3306 And I have also restarted my firewall sudo /sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --destination-port 3306 -j ACCEPT /sbin/service iptables save The network administrator has already opened port 3306 for this box. When connecting from a remote computer (running Ubuntu 10.10, server is running RHEL 5.7), I issue mysql -u jeffrey -p --host=171.67.88.25 --port=3306 --socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock but receive a ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on '171.67.88.25' (113). I've noticed that the socket file /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock is blank. Should this be the case? • ASP.NET Client to Server communication

- by Nelson
Can you help me make sense of all the different ways to communicate from browser to client in ASP.NET? I have made this a community wiki so feel free to edit my post to improve it. Specifically, I'm trying to understand in which scenario to use each one by listing how each works. I'm a little fuzzy on UpdatePanel vs CallBack (with ViewState): I know UpdatePanel always returns HTML while CallBack can return JSON. Any other major differences? ...and CallBack (without ViewState) vs WebMethod. CallBack goes through most of the Page lifecycle, WebMethod doesn't. Any other major differences? IHttpHandler Custom handler for anything (page, image, etc.) Only does what you tell it to do (light server processing) Page is an implementation of IHttpHandler If you don't need what Page provides, create a custom IHttpHandler If you are using Page but overriding Render() and not generating HTML, you probably can do it with a custom IHttpHandler (e.g. writing binary data such as images) By default can use the .axd or .ashx file extensions -- both are functionally similar .ashx doesn't have any built-in endpoints, so it's preferred by convention Regular PostBack (System.Web.UI.Page : IHttpHandler) Inherits Page Full PostBack, including ViewState and HTML control values (heavy traffic) Full Page lifecycle (heavy server processing) No JavaScript required Webpage flickers/scrolls since everything is reloaded in browser Returns full page HTML (heavy traffic) UpdatePanel (Control) Control inside Page Full PostBack, including ViewState and HTML control values (heavy traffic) Full Page lifecycle (heavy server processing) Controls outside the UpdatePanel do Render(NullTextWriter) Must use ScriptManager If no client-side JavaScript, it can fall back to regular PostBack with no JavaScript (?) No flicker/scroll since it's an async call, unless it falls back to regular postback. Can be used with master pages and user controls Has built-in support for progress bar Returns HTML for controls inside UpdatePanel (medium traffic) Client CallBack (Page, System.Web.UI.ICallbackEventHandler) Inherits Page Most of Page lifecycle (heavy server processing) Takes only data you specify (light traffic) and optionally ViewState (?) (medium traffic) Client must support JavaScript and use ScriptManager No flicker/scroll since it's an async call Can be used with master pages and user controls Returns only data you specify in format you specify (e.g. JSON, XML...) (?) (light traffic) WebMethod Class implements System.Web.Service.WebService HttpContext available through this.Context Takes only data you specify (light traffic) Server only runs the called method (light server processing) Client must support JavaScript No flicker/scroll since it's an async call Can be used with master pages and user controls Returns only data you specify, typically JSON (light traffic) Can create instance of server control to render HTML and sent back as string, but events, paging in GridView, etc. won't work PageMethods Essentially a WebMethod contained in the Page class, so most of WebMethod's bullet's apply Method must be public static, therefore no Page instance accessible HttpContext available through HttpContext.Current Accessed directly by URL Page.aspx/MethodName (e.g. with XMLHttpRequest directly or with library such as jQuery) Setting ScriptManager property EnablePageMethods="True" generates a JavaScript proxy for each WebMethod Cannot be used directly in user controls with master pages and user controls Any others?

• ASP.NET ascx.cs via GET

- by Heavy Bytes
Say I have this url: http://site.example/dir/ In this folder I have these files: test.ascx.cs and test.ascx Just to be clear, I am not a .NET developer. From a security point of view - why can't I access http://site.example/dir/test.ascx.cs and how secure is it to keep those files there? I assume IIS filters out request that query these kind of files, but can someone explain me this? Thank you.

• RHEL 6.x on Rackspace Cloud and Dedicated hardware experiencing Redis Timeouts

- by zhallett
I just recently set up a mixture of RHEL 6.1 Rackspace cloud hosts and RHEL 6.2 dedicated hosts using Rackconnect. I am experiencing intermittent Redis timeouts from within our Rails 3.2.8 app with Redis 2.4.16 running on the RHEL 6.2 dedicated hosts. There is no network latency or packet loss. Also there are no errors on any interfaces on our cloud or dedicated servers or on the managed firewall from Rackspace. When Redis timesout, there is nothing logged within redis even though it is set up to do debug logging. The only error we receive is from Airbrake saying there was a Redis timeout. • DL380 G7: Not able to access ILO on DL380 via ssh from a client

- by user117140
I have problem where I can't access my ILO(ssh to ILO IP) thru client which is in different network.I am able to ping ILO IP thru this clinet but ssh access is not possible. Is it possible to have ssh to ILO IP from a client which is in different network? FYI, from the same client I can do ssh to server application IP but ssh to this server ILO IP is not possible. Kindly help? Some more info added: ILO IP address is 10.247.172.70 and its VLAN is different than Client VLAN. Client IP address is 10.247.167.80. ping to ILO IP from this client is possible but not ssh. I can do ssh to ILO IP if I try to do it from the server(hostname:node1) having ILO port or from the other node of this cluster itself,So ssh login is enabled. • Volume group disappeared, LVs still available

- by Ben
I've run into an issue with my KVM host which runs VMs on a LVM volume. As of last night the logical volumes are no longer seen as such (I can't create snapshots of them even though I have been for months now). Running any scans all result in nothing being found: [root@apollo ~]# pvscan No matching physical volumes found [root@apollo ~]# vgscan Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... No volume groups found root@apollo ~]# lvscan No volume groups found If I try restoring the VG conf backup from /etc/lvm/backups/vg0 I get the following error: [root@apollo ~]# vgcfgrestore -f /etc/lvm/backup/vg0 vg0 Couldn't find device with uuid 20zG25-H8MU-UQPf-u0hD-NftW-ngsC-mG63dt. • FreeBSD 8.1 unstable network connection

- by frankcheong
I have three FreeBSD 8.1 running on three different hardware and therefore consist of different network adapter as well (bce, bge and igb). I found that the network connection is kind of unstable which I have tried to scp some 10MB file and found that I cannot always get the files completed successfully. I have further checked with my network admin and he claim that the problem is being caused by the network driver which cannot support the load whereby he tried to ping using huge packet size (around 15k) and my server will drop packet consistently at a regular interval. I found that this statement may not be valid since the three server is using three different network drive and it would be quite impossible that the same problem is being caused by three different network adapter and thus different network driver. Since then I have tried to tune up the performance by playing around with the /etc/sysctl.conf figures with no luck. kern.ipc.somaxconn=1024 kern.ipc.shmall=3276800 kern.ipc.shmmax=1638400000 # Security net.inet.ip.redirect=0 net.inet.ip.sourceroute=0 net.inet.ip.accept_sourceroute=0 net.inet.icmp.maskrepl=0 net.inet.icmp.log_redirect=0 net.inet.icmp.drop_redirect=1 net.inet.tcp.drop_synfin=1 # Security net.inet.udp.blackhole=1 net.inet.tcp.blackhole=2 # Required by pf net.inet.ip.forwarding=1 #Network Performance Tuning kern.ipc.maxsockbuf=16777216 net.inet.tcp.rfc1323=1 net.inet.tcp.sendbuf_max=16777216 net.inet.tcp.recvbuf_max=16777216 # Setting specifically for 1 or even 10Gbps network net.local.stream.sendspace=262144 net.local.stream.recvspace=262144 net.inet.tcp.local_slowstart_flightsize=10 net.inet.tcp.nolocaltimewait=1 net.inet.tcp.mssdflt=1460 net.inet.tcp.sendbuf_auto=1 net.inet.tcp.sendbuf_inc=16384 net.inet.tcp.recvbuf_auto=1 net.inet.tcp.recvbuf_inc=524288 net.inet.tcp.sendspace=262144 net.inet.tcp.recvspace=262144 net.inet.udp.recvspace=262144 kern.ipc.maxsockbuf=16777216 kern.ipc.nmbclusters=32768 net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=1 net.inet.tcp.delacktime=100 net.inet.tcp.slowstart_flightsize=179 net.inet.tcp.inflight.enable=1 net.inet.tcp.inflight.min=6144 # Reduce the cache size of slow start connection net.inet.tcp.hostcache.expire=1 Our network admin also claim that they see quite a lot of network up and down from their cisco switch log while I cannot find any up down message inside the dmesg. • Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware

- by Hello71
The whole installation goes smoothly up to the point of "Completing installation ...". The monitor changes resolution, after which a standard dialog box pops up saying Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware Then, in a few seconds, the whole machine powers down. Trying to restart produces the message: STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} 0x00000000 (0xc0000001 0x00100448) OR it boots into Setup and comes up with the message: Windows Setup encountered an unexpected error... (This is not the actual error, just paraphrasing) I tried using the OEM restore instead of a regular install, but it fails with the same error. (Even though it worked before...) General specs: HP Pavilion Elite e9262f Intel Core i5-750 Processor ATI Radeon HD 4650 Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 ATA Device 6GB DDR3 RAM SuperMulti DVD Burner with LightScribe Some built-in Wi-Fi module http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01916917 I've tried disconnecting the wireless card and disabling the built-in Ethernet and Firewire via the BIOS, and replacing the wireless keyboard and mouse with wired USB ones. Didn't work. I've also tried changing the SATA controller settings in the BIOS to RAID, AHCI, and IDE, reinstalling each time I changed. Still not working. I think the reason why it is showing the Fatal System Error is because it didn't finish installing before it errored out and shut down, so the system is left in an inconsistent state. I've tried 3 different copies (including the OEM restore) of Windows 7 now, and they're all failing at the same point, with the same error message. I've tried to install Windows 7 maybe 10 times already, with the exact same error message at the exact same location. Hm... Interestingly, the 32-bit version of Windows 7 works, but the 64-bit version doesn't. Perhaps it was a badly burned disk? Reburning the 64-bit version still comes up with the same error. Here's a picture of the side of the case that clearly says it came with Windows 7 64-bit, along with the model number and CPU. sudo fdisk -l: Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x0009896f Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda2 14 94119 755906445 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda3 119922 121602 13492224 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda4 94120 119922 207257740+ 5 Extended /dev/sda5 119527 119922 3170769 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda6 107174 119526 99225441 83 Linux /dev/sda7 94120 107173 104856192 7 HPFS/NTFS Partition table entries are not in disk order
