  • Updated Intel display driver causing errors when booting

    I upgraded to to Graphics Installer 1.0.6 on my Ubuntu 14.04 and installed the drivers using the Intel Graphics Installer. The laptop is Intel Ivybridge powered with Intel HD graphics. It Optimus but I have disabled the Nvidia card in bios. The Intel Graphics Installer installs the package i915-3.15-3.13-dkms.deb which I assume is the updated driver. It causes a bunch of error messages when I boot. I tried to remove the package and the errors went away but I'm then running and older driver I assume?

I was wondering if there was a way to embed comments from my Facebook fan page for a specific link with that plugin or any way otherwise?

  • Upgraded to 13.10 now clock settings are all disabled and clock does not display

    I've upgraded to 13.10 and now I don't have the standard menu clock, which I need for work. I checked and 'indicator-datetime' is installed. I even uninstalled/reinstalled that applet with no luck. Also my "clock" settings under System Preferences are all disabled. I can't change anything. Does anyone know how I can get the old menu clock back? Alternatively is there another menu clock app I can download? Thanks for the responses I've restarted several times and that didn't fix the issue. I just ran the 13.10 update today. But I ran it again a few minutes ago. I got about 200KB in random updates.   • Why does the screen resolution of 1440x900 suddenly disappear from Intel GMA Control Panel?

    I'm using a Vostro 1200 laptop with the Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset powering its graphics and running Vista 32-bit SP2. I've been using the Vostro with a Dell SE198WFP LCD Monitor as the external display since day one for about two years without any problems. Recently, I plugged the Vostro into a couple of other monitors. The problem is, now the native resolution for my main monitor's (the SE198WFP) resolution of 1440x900 @ 60 Hz is no longer available. (See below) I've tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel drivers as well as the monitor drivers to no avail. I've goggled this problem and it appears that this has happened to other people but all the answers involve people giving up in frustration or reinstalling; both terrible outcomes. Has anybody ever figured why this happens and have a good solution? UPDATE: This dude has a complicated solution, which I haven't tried yet. His explanations for the problem was After an exausting search for an answer to the matter of why my brand new 19? widescreen monitor’s native resolution (1440×900) was unavailible (sic) in the display properties, I finally stumbled upon an article a person posted on Intel’s forums that basically explained what shannanigans Intel had been up to with their GMA 950 line of onboard graphic solutions. Not very comforting.

  • LaTeX-like display programming environment

    I used to be a hobbyist programmer, but now I'm also a fairly experienced physicist and find myself programming to solve certain problems quite a lot. In physics, we use variables with superscripts, subscripts, italics, underlines, etc etc. To bridge this gap to the computer we usually use LaTeX. Now, I generally use MATLAB for handling any data and such, and find it very irritating that I can't basically use LaTeX for variable names. Something as simple as sy has to be named either sigma_y or some descriptive name like peak_height_error. I don't necessarily want full on workable LaTeX in my code, but I do want to be able to use greek letters and super/sub-scripts at the very least. Does this exist?

  • 13" MacBook Pro with Win 7 and External VGA gets 640x480

    I have a brand new 13" MacBook Pro - 2.26 GHz and the NVIDIA 9400M Video card. I installed Windows 7 (final) in boot camp and booted up to Windows 7. Installed all the drivers from the Apple disk and it was working great. Then I attached the external VGA adapter (from apple) to connect to a projector and it dropped down at 640x480 resolution. No matter what I did it wouldn't let me change to a higher resolution if the external VGA was connected. Once it disconnects then it goes back to the normal resolution. If I am booted into Snow Leopard it works fine. I tried updating the NVIDIA drivers and it behaved exactly the same. Ultimately I want to get 1024x768 or better resolution when connected to an external display. If it isn't fixable then I am curious if anyone else has seen this, if it is a known issue, and who to contact for support (Apple, Microsoft or NVIDIA?) Update: Just attaching the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter kicks it into 640x480, no projector is required. I tried forcing the display driver from Generic PnP Monitor to one that supported 1024x768 and that didn't work either.

    A requirement on OTN was to disable the dependent list box of a model driven list of value configuration whenever the list is empty. To disable the dependent list, the af:selectOneChoice component needs to be refreshed with every value change of the parent list, which however already is the case as the list boxes are already dependent. When you create model driven list of values as choice lists in an ADF Faces page, two ADF list bindings are implicitly created in the PageDef file of the page that hosts the input form. At runtime, a list binding is an instance of FacesCtrlListBinding, which exposes getItems() as a method to access a list of available child data (java.util.List).   • Lock screen does not display all users (ubuntu 14.10)

    When I lock my screen using ctrl+alt+L, I am not able to see other users listed within the lock screen so I can switch instead. The lock screen shows only my name as an option for login, however I would like to switch to other user accounts. In Ubuntu 12.04 it used to show all system available users in lock screen and I was able to switch easily. Last night I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 and this option is gone. How do I set back this option?

  • httpd 2.2.15 + suPHP + suExec + php5 = permission and information ?

    Hi, i am currently playing around with suexec, suphp, php5 on my apache on slackware 13.1. Everything is installed and working properly but now i did like to got further into the directory permissions and at suphp settings and options available. initially i was planning to leave suphp disabled unless a virtualhost has it specified to be enabled but it does not seem to work, see sample: mod_php.conf which is included in my httpd.conf # # mod_php & mod_suPHP - PHP Hypertext Preprocessor module # # Load the PHP module: LoadModule php5_module lib/httpd/modules/libphp5.so # Load the suPHP module: LoadModule suphp_module lib/httpd/modules/mod_suphp.so <IfModule mod_php5.c> # Tell Apache to feed all *.php files through PHP. If you'd like to # parse PHP embedded in files with different extensions, comment out # these lines and see the example below. <FilesMatch \.php$> SetHandler application/x-httpd-php </FilesMatch> </IfModule> <IfModule mod_suphp.c> # This option tells mod_suphp if a PHP-script requested on this server (or # VirtualHost) should be run with the PHP-interpreter or returned to the # browser "as it is". suPHP_Engine off </IfModule> With the above first sample it makes suPHP and PHP not work if i comment out the php5 stuff but the module it will run just fine ... So my first question is, how could i possible make this setup work ? Leave suPHP disabled using php5 by default and if a virtualhost has suPHP enabled it will disable php5 and use suPHP. if any information is lacked here please let me know and i will update with any additional information you may need.   • Display settings changes automatically with dual monitors in 12.04 and 12.10 AMD

    Dual monitors works fine, except that the settings suddenly change. This happens very often, sometimes several times in a few minutes. It is very irritating having to set the settings again each time. Suddenly mirroring is set to on, sometimes the monitor switch places (from left to right and so on), and most of the times the screen resolutions are also changed. I use Gnome Shell. I have tried unity with the same result. I use an open driver. I have earlier used fglrx, with some better results (still happens, but not so often), but can't install it sucsessfully after upgrading to ubuntu 12.10. I know there is a similar question about this issue, but it's not answered. I hope someone can help me.

  • Unity does not display properly [closed]

    Ubuntu Unity on the Ubuntu netbook edition installs without a problem but when I log in though, where the panels are, there is just blank area with a shadow effect style thing on it. I can open apps but the Window buttons and the global menu are not visable. Does this mean that I cannot use Unity. I'm running it through Wubi on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. My total ammount of graphics memory is 831MB My dedicated memory is 128MB. The odd thing is is that Windows Aero displays without a problem so why is there a problem with Unity Hope this helps Ben

  • Why do fonts sometimes look "fat" on Mac OS X?

    Sometimes when resuming from suspend, the fonts in Mac OS X look "fatter" than normal. Unfortunately right now I can't get my Macbook Pro to exhibit the "normal" behavior for comparison, it has been abnormal yesterday and today. If I can get screenshots of what I think is 'normal', I'll add them. "Fixing" this has been random. I use an external monitor, and sometimes unplugging it and plugging back in, or even turning it off and back on has worked. Sometimes with the display attached (or not) detecting displays works. Sometimes logging out or rebooting entirely is what it takes. Displays used: Macbook Pro 15" built-in display Dell 27" LCD (2009 model) Software where I see this happen, at least most noticably: Firefox (screenshots below) iTerm Things MacIrssi (screenshots below) I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8.   • How display path ball will bounce?

    I'm trying to figure out a way to show the path a ball will travel, so that the player can line up a shot before they fire the ball. I can't think of a way to calculate this path in advance and show it to the player, especially if it involves collision detection. At first I thought I would run the game at a super high speed for one update, plot the path with some dotted lines where the ball bounced, and then in the next frame hide the 'tracer' ball. This seems to have two issues - Calculating collision detection without actually updating the frames and collision detection getting less reliable at high speeds. If they were straight lines I think I could figure this out in a while loop, but trying to take into account the speed of the ball, the curve of the path, the reflecting from other objects..it all seems a bit much. I'm not looking for any code and this isn't a platform specific question, more just help trying to figure out conceptually how this would work. Can this be done? Are there techniques to achieve this?

  • Windows no longer display with proprietary ATI Catalyst drivers

    I recently started having an issue that opening any application would would show nothing on screen. At the time I noticed it I assumed it was an incompatibility between the new 14 update so reinstalled the old 13.10 iso I used originally. I have now tried a range of ATI drivers including the latest and the exact file I installed the first time with the same results. I can only assume then that it is one of the updates applied at some point, but have no idea which one or how I would go about rolling these back or getting earlier versions of packages. Is anyone else getting this issue? The system has 2 ati 6850s installed, not in crossfire. The open source drivers work fine but I need the ATI ones for cgminer to work.

  • Cannot set video resolution above 640x480 after installing Windows XP SP2

    I've installed Windows XP SP2 on a computer (there was not SP at all). Now the display settings are set back to 640x480 and 4 bits colors. And I can't change it, it's the only option in Settings tab of the Display dialog of Windows. The screen look awful now, how can I solve this problem? UPDATE: Seems to be a problem with the video driver (thanks @Karan and @Hennes).   • Minimizing data sent over a webservice call on expensive connection

    I am working on a system that has many remote laptops all connected to the internet through cellular data connections. The application will synchronize periodically to a central database. The problem is, due to factors outside our control, the cost to move data across the cellular networks are spectacularly expensive. Currently the we are sending a compressed XML file across the wire where it is being processed and various things are done with (mainly stuffing it into a database). My first couple of thoughts were to convert that XML doc to json, just prior to transmission and convert back to XML just after receipt on the other end, and get some extra compression for free without changing much. Another thought was to test various other compression algorithms to determine the smallest one possible. Although, I am not entirely sure how much difference json vs xml would make once it is compressed. I thought that their must be resources available that address this problem from an information theory perspective. Does anyone know of any such resources or suggestions on what direction to go in. This developed on the MS .net stack on windows for reference.
