  • SQL SERVER – Weekly Series – Memory Lane – #007

    - by pinaldave
Here is the list of selected articles of SQLAuthority.com across all these years. Instead of just listing all the articles I have selected a few of my most favorite articles and have listed them here with additional notes below it. Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2006 Find Stored Procedure Related to Table in Database – Search in All Stored Procedure In 2006 I wrote a small script which will help user  find all the Stored Procedures (SP) which are related to one or more specific tables. This was quite a popular script however, in SQL Server 2012 the same can be achieved using new DMV sys.sql-expression_dependencies. I recently blogged about it over Find Referenced or Referencing Object in SQL Server using sys.sql_expression_dependencies. 2007 SQL SERVER – Versions, CodeNames, Year of Release 1993 – SQL Server 4.21 for Windows NT 1995 – SQL Server 6.0, codenamed SQL95 1996 – SQL Server 6.5, codenamed Hydra 1999 – SQL Server 7.0, codenamed Sphinx 1999 – SQL Server 7.0 OLAP, codenamed Plato 2000 – SQL Server 2000 32-bit, codenamed Shiloh (version 8.0) 2003 – SQL Server 2000 64-bit, codenamed Liberty 2005 – SQL Server 2005, codenamed Yukon (version 9.0) 2008 – SQL Server 2008, codenamed Katmai (version 10.0) 2011 – SQL Server 2008, codenamed Denali (version 11.0) Search String in Stored Procedure Searching sting in the stored procedure is one of the most frequent task developer do. They might be searching for a table, view or any other details. I have written a script to do the same in SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005. This is worth bookmarking blog post. There is an alternative way to do the same as well here is the example. 2008 SQL SERVER – Refresh Database Using T-SQL NO! Some of the questions have a single answer NO! You may want to read the question in the original blog post. I had a great time saying No! SQL SERVER – Delete Backup History – Cleanup Backup History SQL Server stores history of all the taken backup forever. History of all the backup is stored in the msdb database. Many times older history is no more required. Following Stored Procedure can be executed with a parameter which takes days of history to keep. In the following example 30 is passed to keep a history of month. 2009 Stored Procedure are Compiled on First Run – SP taking Longer to Run First Time Is stored procedure pre-compiled? Why the Stored Procedure takes a long time to run for the first time?  This is a very common questions often discussed by developers and DBAs. There is an absolutely definite answer but the question has been discussed forever. There is a misconception that stored procedures are pre-compiled. They are not pre-compiled, but compiled only during the first run. For every subsequent runs, it is for sure pre-compiled. Read the entire article for example and demonstration. Removing Key Lookup – Seek Predicate – Predicate – An Interesting Observation Related to Datatypes This is one of the most important performance tuning lesson on my blog. I suggest this weekend you spend time reading them and let me know what you think about the concepts which I have demonstrated in the four part series. Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 Seek Predicate is the operation that describes the b-tree portion of the Seek. Predicate is the operation that describes the additional filter using non-key columns. Based on the description, it is very clear that Seek Predicate is better than Predicate as it searches indexes whereas in Predicate, the search is on non-key columns – which implies that the search is on the data in page files itself. Policy Based Management – Create, Evaluate and Fix Policies This article will cover the most spectacular feature of SQL Server – Policy-based management and how the configuration of SQL Server with policy-based management architecture can make a powerful difference. Policy based management is loaded with several advantages. It can help you implement various policies for reliable configuration of the system. It also provides additional administration assistance to DBAs and helps them effortlessly manage various tasks of SQL Server across the enterprise. 2010 Recycle Error Log – Create New Log file without Server Restart Once I observed a DBA to restaring the SQL Server when he needed new error log file. This was funny and sad both at the same time. There is no need to restart the server to create a new log file or recycle the log file. You can run sp_cycle_errorlog and achieve the same result. Get Database Backup History for a Single Database Simple but effective script! Reducing CXPACKET Wait Stats for High Transactional Database The subject is very complex and I have done my best to simplify the concept. In simpler words, when a parallel operation is created for SQL Query, there are multiple threads for a single query. Each query deals with a different set of the data (or rows). Due to some reasons, one or more of the threads lag behind, creating the CXPACKET Wait Stat. Threads which came first have to wait for the slower thread to finish. The Wait by a specific completed thread is called CXPACKET Wait Stat. Information Related to DATETIME and DATETIME2 There are quite a lot of confusion with DATETIME and DATETIME2. DATETIME2 is also one of the underutilized datatype of SQL Server.  In this blog post I have written a follow up of the my earlier datetime series where I clarify a few of the concepts related to datetime. Difference Between GETDATE and SYSDATETIME Difference Between DATETIME and DATETIME2 – WITH GETDATE Difference Between DATETIME and DATETIME2 2011 Introduction to CUME_DIST – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012 SQL Server 2012 introduces new analytical function CUME_DIST(). This function provides cumulative distribution value. It will be very difficult to explain this in words so I will attempt small example to explain you this function. Instead of creating new table, I will be using AdventureWorks sample database as most of the developer uses that for experiment. Introduction to FIRST _VALUE and LAST_VALUE – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012 SQL Server 2012 introduces new analytical functions FIRST_VALUE() and LAST_VALUE(). This function returns first and last value from the list. It will be very difficult to explain this in words so I’d like to attempt to explain its function through a brief example. Instead of creating a new table, I will be using the AdventureWorks sample database as most developers use that for experiment purposes. OVER clause with FIRST _VALUE and LAST_VALUE – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012 – ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING “Don’t you think there is bug in your first example where FIRST_VALUE is remain same but the LAST_VALUE is changing every line. I think the LAST_VALUE should be the highest value in the windows or set of result.” Puzzle – Functions FIRST_VALUE and LAST_VALUE with OVER clause and ORDER BY You can see that row number 2, 3, 4, and 5 has same SalesOrderID = 43667. The FIRST_VALUE is 78 and LAST_VALUE is 77. Now if these function was working on maximum and minimum value they should have given answer as 77 and 80 respectively instead of 78 and 77. Also the value of FIRST_VALUE is greater than LAST_VALUE 77. Why? Explain in detail. Introduction to LEAD and LAG – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012 SQL Server 2012 introduces new analytical function LEAD() and LAG(). This functions accesses data from a subsequent row (for lead) and previous row (for lag) in the same result set without the use of a self-join . It will be very difficult to explain this in words so I will attempt small example to explain you this function. Instead of creating new table, I will be using AdventureWorks sample database as most of the developer uses that for experiment. A Real Story of Book Getting ‘Out of Stock’ to A 25% Discount Story Available Our book was out of stock in 48 hours of it was arrived in stock! We got call from the online store with a request for more copies within 12 hours. But we had printed only as many as we had sent them. There were no extra copies. We finally talked to the printer to get more copies. However, due to festivals and holidays the copies could not be shipped to the online retailer for two days. We knew for sure that they were going to be out of the book for 48 hours. This is the story of how we overcame that situation! • Allocating memory inside a function and returning it back

    - by user2651062
I want to pass a pointer to my function and allocate the memory to which this pointer points. I've read in other posts that I should pass a double pointer to this function and I did so, but I keep getting segmentation fault: #include <iostream> #include <stdlib.h> using namespace std; void allocate(unsigned char** t) { *t=(unsigned char*)malloc(3*sizeof(unsigned char)); if(*t == NULL) cout<<"Allcoation failed"<<endl; else for(int m=0;m<3;m++) *(t[m])=0; } int main() { unsigned char* t; allocate(&t); cout<<t[0]<<" "<<t[1]<<endl; return 0; } the result is always this: Segmentation fault (core dumped) I don't think that there's anything missing from this code. What could be wrong?

  • Free memory outside function [migrated]

    - by Dev Bag
    Can you please help with this issue, is the below gonna leak memory or is it ok? and please let me know if there is something else that I need to pay attention to typedef struct { int len; UC * message; }pack; pack * prepare_packet_to_send(const int length,const unsigned char tag,const int numargs, ... ) { pack *layer= malloc(sizeof(pack)); va_list listp; va_start( listp, numargs ); int step = 0; layer->message = (unsigned char *) malloc(length); layer->len = length; int i = 0; int len = 0; unsigned char *source_message ; for( i = 0 ; i < numargs; i++ ) { source_message = va_arg( listp, unsigned char *); len = va_arg( listp, long); memcpy(layer->message+step, source_message, (long) len); step+=len; } va_end( listp ); return layer; } main() { pack *test = call prepare_packet_to_send(sizeof(var1)+sizeof(var2),any tag,any args) // are following two frees correct/enough? or is there something else i need to do to prevent mem leak? free(test->message); free(test); }

  • What are the advantages of Ceylon over Java?

    - by Anuj Balan
Looking for the recent and powerful upcoming programming languages over net, I came across Ceylon. I dropped in at ceylon-lang.org and it says: Ceylon is deeply influenced by Java. You see, we're fans of Java, but we know its limitations inside out. Ceylon keeps the best bits of Java but improves things that in our experience are annoying, tedious, frustrating, difficult to understand, or bugprone. What are the advantages of Ceylon over Java?

  • Books tailored for Java to C/C++ development?

    - by soulesschild
Does anyone know of good books that are tailored for Java developers looking to transition to C/C++? I have the classic K&R Ansi C book but was looking for something more tailored to those that learned Java first, such as having examples of similar code/functionality between Java and C/C++. I know there is this list, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/388242/the-definitive-c-book-guide-and-list, but was looking for books specifically written for Java developers. Thanks!

  • How to unicode Myanmar texts on Java? [closed]

    - by Spacez Ly Wang
I'm just beginner of Java. I'm trying to unicode (display) correctly Myanmar texts on Java GUI ( Swing/Awt ). I have four TrueType fonts which support Myanmar unicode texts. There are Myanmar3, Padauk, Tharlon, Myanmar Text ( Window 8 built-in ). You may need the fonts before the code. Google the fonts, please. Each of the fonts display on Java GUI differently and incorrectly. Here is the code for GUI Label displaying myanmar texts: ++++++++++++++++++++++++ package javaapplication1; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JTextField; public class CusFrom { private static void createAndShowGUI() { JFrame frame = new JFrame("Hello World Swing"); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); String s = "\u1015\u102F \u103C\u1015\u102F"; JLabel label = new JLabel(s); label.setFont(new java.awt.Font("Myanmar3", 0, 20));// font insert here, Myanmar Text, Padauk, Myanmar3, Tharlon frame.getContentPane().add(label); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); } public static void main(String[] args) { javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { createAndShowGUI(); } }); } } ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Outputs vary. See the pictures: Myanmar3 IMG Padauk IMG Tharlon IMG Myanmar Text IMG What is the correct form? (on notepad) Well, next is the code for GUI Textfield inputting Myanmar texts: ++++++++++++++++++++++++ package javaapplication1; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JTextField; public class XusForm { private static void createAndShowGUI() { JFrame frame = new JFrame("Frame Title"); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); JTextField textfield = new JTextField(); textfield.setFont(new java.awt.Font("Myanmar3", 0, 20)); frame.getContentPane().add(textfield); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); } public static void main(String[] args) { javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { createAndShowGUI(); } }); } } ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Outputs vary when I input keys( unicode text ) on keyboards. Myanmar Text Output IMG Padauk Output IMG Myanmar3 Output IMG Tharlon Output IMG Those fonts work well on Linux when opening text files with Text Editor application. My Question is how to unicode Myanmar texts on Java GUI. Do I need additional codes left to display well? Or Does Java still have errors? The fonts display well on Web Application (HTML, CSS) but I'm not sure about displaying on Java Web Application.

  • Resources relating to Java EE and Scala

    - by Ant Kutschera
Are there any good sites / blogs / books / articles on using Java EE together with Scala? Or indeed articles saying that it should not be done. Many Scala resources talk about using Akka and Lift. Akka solves a different domain problem than Java EE. I don't know Lift, but I assume its geared towards the web end of Java EE and doesn't replace app server containers which provide transactions, security, scalability, resource management, reliability, etc. (all those things which Java EE markets itself as being good at).

  • Java 1.7 update 07 and Google Chrome

    - by Peter
I've just updated Java from 1.6 to 1.7 via the Software Centre - removing the old Java 1.6 and selecting the new Java 1.7. Firefox works fine. But when I use Google Chrome to access a Java test website it says the Plugin is out of date. I click on run anyway and it says that it's running version 1.7. I've cleared Chrome's Cache and Plugin data and this hasn't changed anything. Anyway ideas? (Ps. It's Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit)

  • Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 4)

    - by hinkmond
And now here's the Java code that you'll need to read your ghost sensor on your Raspberry Pi The general idea is that you are using Java code to access the GPIO pin on your Raspberry Pi where the ghost sensor (JFET trasistor) detects minute changes in the electromagnetic field near the Raspberry Pi and will change the GPIO pin to high (+3 volts) when something is detected, otherwise there is no value (ground). Here's that Java code: try { /*** Init GPIO port(s) for input ***/ // Open file handles to GPIO port unexport and export controls FileWriter unexportFile = new FileWriter("/sys/class/gpio/unexport"); FileWriter exportFile = new FileWriter("/sys/class/gpio/export"); for (String gpioChannel : GpioChannels) { System.out.println(gpioChannel); // Reset the port File exportFileCheck = new File("/sys/class/gpio/gpio"+gpioChannel); if (exportFileCheck.exists()) { unexportFile.write(gpioChannel); unexportFile.flush(); } // Set the port for use exportFile.write(gpioChannel); exportFile.flush(); // Open file handle to input/output direction control of port FileWriter directionFile = new FileWriter("/sys/class/gpio/gpio" + gpioChannel + "/direction"); // Set port for input directionFile.write(GPIO_IN); } /*** Read data from each GPIO port ***/ RandomAccessFile[] raf = new RandomAccessFile[GpioChannels.length]; int sleepPeriod = 10; final int MAXBUF = 256; byte[] inBytes = new byte[MAXBUF]; String inLine; int zeroCounter = 0; // Get current timestamp with Calendar() Calendar cal; DateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy/MM/dd HH:mm:ss.SSS"); String dateStr; // Open RandomAccessFile handle to each GPIO port for (int channum=0; channum And, then we just load up our Java SE Embedded app, place each Raspberry Pi with a ghost sensor attached in strategic locations around our Santa Clara office (which apparently is very haunted by ghosts from the Agnews Insane Asylum 1906 earthquake), and watch our analytics for any ghosts. Easy peazy. • Oracle moves to Java technology to embedded middleware

    - by hinkmond
Here's another article pointing out our move to Java Embedded Middleware with our launch of Oracle Java Embedded Suite 7.0 See: Oracle moves to Java embedded middleware Here's a quote: At the JavaOne Embedded conference, a wafer thin embedded device that was smaller than a Ritz cracker was loaded up with the Java Embedded Suite. I like that: "a wafer thin embedded device". Just one thin wafer. Reminds me of the scene from Monty Python's, The Meaning of Life. "Better?" Hinkmond

  • Android: Showing photos runs out of memory

    - by Tom Beech
I'm using a dialog box to display images in my android project. The first one opens fine, but when I close it and do the process again to show a different one the app falls over with a memory error (it's running on a samsung galaxy s3 - so shouldnt be an issue). • Error Connecting to Oracle Database from Pentaho Report Designer

    - by knt
Hi all, I am new to Pentaho, and I am struggling to set up a new database connection. I am trying to connect to an Oracle 10g database, but whenever I test the connection, I get the below error. It doesn't really seem to list any specific error message so I'm not really sure what to do or where to go from this point. I placed ojdbc jar's in my tomcat lib folder, but maybe there is another place those should go. Any help/hints would be greatly appreciated. • How to convert String to Java.sql.date and Java.sql.time

    - by Mr Morgan
Hello If I have a method like this: public static String convertDateTimeToString(DateTime dt) { return dt.getDate() + " " + dt.getTime(); } Which takes a Datetime object of my own which contains a Java.sql.date and a Java.sql.time, what is the best way of reversing the process so that I can substring a Java.sql.date and a Java.sql.time from a string? Or if DateTime dt is a JodaTime DateTime object? If this can be done without reference to Java.util.date. Thanks Mr Morgan.

  • Traditional IO vs memory-mapped

    - by Senne
    I'm trying to illustrate the difference in performance between traditional IO and memory mapped files in java to students. I found an example somewhere on internet but not everything is clear to me, I don't even think all steps are nececery. I read a lot about it here and there but I'm not convinced about a correct implementation of neither of them. The code I try to understand is: public class FileCopy{ public static void main(String args[]){ if (args.length < 1){ System.out.println(" Wrong usage!"); System.out.println(" Correct usage is : java FileCopy <large file with full path>"); System.exit(0); } String inFileName = args[0]; File inFile = new File(inFileName); if (inFile.exists() != true){ System.out.println(inFileName + " does not exist!"); System.exit(0); } try{ new FileCopy().memoryMappedCopy(inFileName, inFileName+".new" ); new FileCopy().customBufferedCopy(inFileName, inFileName+".new1"); }catch(FileNotFoundException fne){ fne.printStackTrace(); }catch(IOException ioe){ ioe.printStackTrace(); }catch (Exception e){ e.printStackTrace(); } } public void memoryMappedCopy(String fromFile, String toFile ) throws Exception{ long timeIn = new Date().getTime(); // read input file RandomAccessFile rafIn = new RandomAccessFile(fromFile, "rw"); FileChannel fcIn = rafIn.getChannel(); ByteBuffer byteBuffIn = fcIn.map(FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE, 0,(int) fcIn.size()); fcIn.read(byteBuffIn); byteBuffIn.flip(); RandomAccessFile rafOut = new RandomAccessFile(toFile, "rw"); FileChannel fcOut = rafOut.getChannel(); ByteBuffer writeMap = fcOut.map(FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE,0,(int) fcIn.size()); writeMap.put(byteBuffIn); long timeOut = new Date().getTime(); System.out.println("Memory mapped copy Time for a file of size :" + (int) fcIn.size() +" is "+(timeOut-timeIn)); fcOut.close(); fcIn.close(); } static final int CHUNK_SIZE = 100000; static final char[] inChars = new char[CHUNK_SIZE]; public static void customBufferedCopy(String fromFile, String toFile) throws IOException{ long timeIn = new Date().getTime(); Reader in = new FileReader(fromFile); Writer out = new FileWriter(toFile); while (true) { synchronized (inChars) { int amountRead = in.read(inChars); if (amountRead == -1) { break; } out.write(inChars, 0, amountRead); } } long timeOut = new Date().getTime(); System.out.println("Custom buffered copy Time for a file of size :" + (int) new File(fromFile).length() +" is "+(timeOut-timeIn)); in.close(); out.close(); } } When exactly is it nececary to use RandomAccessFile? Here it is used to read and write in the memoryMappedCopy, is it actually nececary just to copy a file at all? Or is it a part of memorry mapping? In customBufferedCopy, why is synchronized used here? I also found a different example that -should- test the performance between the 2: public class MappedIO { private static int numOfInts = 4000000; private static int numOfUbuffInts = 200000; private abstract static class Tester { private String name; public Tester(String name) { this.name = name; } public long runTest() { System.out.print(name + ": "); try { long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); test(); long endTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); return (endTime - startTime); } catch (IOException e) { throw new RuntimeException(e); } } public abstract void test() throws IOException; } private static Tester[] tests = { new Tester("Stream Write") { public void test() throws IOException { DataOutputStream dos = new DataOutputStream( new BufferedOutputStream( new FileOutputStream(new File("temp.tmp")))); for(int i = 0; i < numOfInts; i++) dos.writeInt(i); dos.close(); } }, new Tester("Mapped Write") { public void test() throws IOException { FileChannel fc = new RandomAccessFile("temp.tmp", "rw") .getChannel(); IntBuffer ib = fc.map( FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE, 0, fc.size()) .asIntBuffer(); for(int i = 0; i < numOfInts; i++) ib.put(i); fc.close(); } }, new Tester("Stream Read") { public void test() throws IOException { DataInputStream dis = new DataInputStream( new BufferedInputStream( new FileInputStream("temp.tmp"))); for(int i = 0; i < numOfInts; i++) dis.readInt(); dis.close(); } }, new Tester("Mapped Read") { public void test() throws IOException { FileChannel fc = new FileInputStream( new File("temp.tmp")).getChannel(); IntBuffer ib = fc.map( FileChannel.MapMode.READ_ONLY, 0, fc.size()) .asIntBuffer(); while(ib.hasRemaining()) ib.get(); fc.close(); } }, new Tester("Stream Read/Write") { public void test() throws IOException { RandomAccessFile raf = new RandomAccessFile( new File("temp.tmp"), "rw"); raf.writeInt(1); for(int i = 0; i < numOfUbuffInts; i++) { raf.seek(raf.length() - 4); raf.writeInt(raf.readInt()); } raf.close(); } }, new Tester("Mapped Read/Write") { public void test() throws IOException { FileChannel fc = new RandomAccessFile( new File("temp.tmp"), "rw").getChannel(); IntBuffer ib = fc.map( FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE, 0, fc.size()) .asIntBuffer(); ib.put(0); for(int i = 1; i < numOfUbuffInts; i++) ib.put(ib.get(i - 1)); fc.close(); } } }; public static void main(String[] args) { for(int i = 0; i < tests.length; i++) System.out.println(tests[i].runTest()); } } I more or less see whats going on, my output looks like this: Stream Write: 653 Mapped Write: 51 Stream Read: 651 Mapped Read: 40 Stream Read/Write: 14481 Mapped Read/Write: 6 What is makeing the Stream Read/Write so unbelievably long? And as a read/write test, to me it looks a bit pointless to read the same integer over and over (if I understand well what's going on in the Stream Read/Write) Wouldn't it be better to read int's from the previously written file and just read and write ints on the same place? Is there a better way to illustrate it? I've been breaking my head about a lot of these things for a while and I just can't get the whole picture..

  • Installing Java3D on Eclipse

    - by Matt
I'm trying to use Java3D in my project. This is the error I receive: 29-Dec-2010 1:01:29 AM javax.media.j3d.NativePipeline getSupportedOglVendor SEVERE: java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no j3dcore-ogl-chk in java.library.path Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no j3dcore-d3d in java.library.path at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Runtime.loadLibrary0(Unknown Source) at java.lang.System.loadLibrary(Unknown Source) at javax.media.j3d.NativePipeline$1.run(NativePipeline.java:189) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at javax.media.j3d.NativePipeline.loadLibrary(NativePipeline.java:180) at javax.media.j3d.NativePipeline.loadLibraries(NativePipeline.java:137) at javax.media.j3d.MasterControl.loadLibraries(MasterControl.java:948) at javax.media.j3d.VirtualUniverse.<clinit>(VirtualUniverse.java:280) at World.<init>(World.java:10) at Start.main(Start.java:12) I have copied the .jar files into my project's lib folder and linked them in Project - Properties - Add Jar File. There was also a .dll file in the Java3D download that I haven't touched or included in any way. What am I missing?

  • LLBLGen Pro feature highlights: model views

    - by FransBouma
(This post is part of a series of posts about features of the LLBLGen Pro system) To be able to work with large(r) models, it's key you can view subsets of these models so you can have a better, more focused look at them. For example because you want to display how a subset of entities relate to one another in a different way than the list of entities. LLBLGen Pro offers this in the form of Model Views. Model Views are views on parts of the entity model of a project, and the subsets are displayed in a graphical way. Additionally, one can add documentation to a Model View. As Model Views are displaying parts of the model in a graphical way, they're easier to explain to people who aren't familiar with entity models, e.g. the stakeholders you're interviewing for your project. The documentation can then be used to communicate specifics of the elements on the model view to the developers who have to write the actual code. Below I've included an example. It's a model view on a subset of the entities of AdventureWorks. It displays several entities, their relationships (both relational and inheritance relationships) and also some specifics gathered from the interview with the stakeholder. As the information is inside the actual project the developer will work with, the information doesn't have to be converted back/from e.g .word documents or other intermediate formats, it's the same project. This makes sure there are less errors / misunderstandings. (of course you can hide the docked documentation pane or dock it to another corner). The Model View can contain entities which are placed in different groups. This makes it ideal to group entities together for close examination even though they're stored in different groups. The Model View is a first-class citizen of the code-generator. This means you can write templates which consume Model Views and generate code accordingly. E.g. you can write a template which generates a service per Model View and exposes the entities in the Model View as a single entity graph, fetched through a method. (This template isn't included in the LLBLGen Pro package, but it's easy to write it up yourself with the built-in template editor). Viewing an entity model in different ways is key to fully understand the entity model and Model Views help with that.

  • Lack of Virtual Memory - confusion

    - by Wesley
Specs ahead of time: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.00 GHz / 1 GB PC-3200 DDR RAM / 160 GB IDE HDD / 128 MB GeForce 6200 AGP / FIC AM37 / 350W PSU / Windows XP Pro SP3 So, XP has pop-ups saying that I am low on virtual memory. However, I have a program called SmartRAM (part of Advanced SystemCare by IObit) and it displays CPU & Page File Usage and Free Physical and Virtual Memory. That program shows that I have at least 2000 MB free virtual memory on my machine when the XP pop-ups say that I'm low on virtual memory. First off, would a complete lack of virtual memory cause my computer to freeze? Secondly, how can I solve this lack of virtual memory? (A complete reformat is possible but can't be done immediately...) Thanks in advance.

  • Windows 7 using exactly HALF the installed memory

    - by Nathan Ridley
I've taken this directly from system information: Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB Total Physical Memory 2.00 GB Available Physical Memory 434 MB Total Virtual Memory 5.10 GB Available Virtual Memory 1.19 GB Page File Space 3.11 GB Also the BIOS reports a full 4GB available. Note the 4gb installed, yet 2gb total. I understand that on a 32 bit operating system, you'll never get the full 4gb of ram, however typically you'll get in the range of 2.5-3.2gb of ram. I have only 2gb available! My swap file goes nuts when I do anything! Note that I have dual SLI nvidia video cards, each with 512mb of on board ram, though I have the SLI feature turned off. Anybody know why Windows might claim that I have exactly 2gb of ram total? Note: previously asked on SuperUser, but closed as "belongs on superuser" before this site opened: http://serverfault.com/questions/39603/windows-7-using-exactly-half-the-installed-memory (I still need an answer!)
