  Can I build a multi-threaded system that handles events from a game and sorts them, independently, into different threads based on priority, and is it a good idea? Here's more info: I am about to begin work on porting a mid-sized game from Flash/AS3 to Java so that I can continue development with multi-threading capabilities. Here's a small bit of background about the game: The game contains numerous asynchronous activities, such as "world updating" (the game environment is constantly changing based on a set of natural laws and forces), procedural generation of terrain, NPCs, quests, items, etc., and on top of that, the effects of all of the player's interactions with his environment are programmatically calculated in real time, based on a set of constantly changing "stats" and once again, natural laws and forces. All of these things going on at once, in an asynchronous manner, seem to lend themselves to multi-threading very well. My question is: Can I build some kind of central engine that handles the "stacking" of all of these events as they are triggered, and dynamically sorts them out amongst the available threads, and would it be a good idea? As an example: Essentially, every time something happens (IE, a magic missile being generated by a spell, or a bunch of plants need to grow to their next stage), instead of just processing that task right then and adding the new object(s) to a list of managed objects, send a reference to that event to a core "event handler" that throws it into a stack of all other currently queued events, which then sorts them out and orders them according to urgency, splits them between a number of available threads for as-fast-as-possible multithreaded execution.

• Changing the default boot option without losing the boot menu

  I've had a working multi-boot setup with the Windows boot loader, containing menu items for two Windows 7 systems, and one for Grub. Grub in turn contains multiple menu items, but I think that's not relevant here. I've upgraded one system to Windows 8. When I now set a different system as the default, I lose the boot menu, and I lose the possibility of booting into the other systems. I've set Windows 7 as the default, rebooted, and get Windows 7, but I don't get to choose which system to boot into. I can run its own bcdedit to change the default back to Windows 8, and another reboot shows the boot menu again, but how can I avoid defaulting to Windows 8? Here are my current boot settings, is there anything that is misconfigured? • How can I get Pinch to Zoom back in Desktop mode?

  Windows 7 had an old implimentation of Pinch to Zoom where bringing your fingers apart/together would act similar to ctrl + +/-, the standard zoom. It's not as nice as granular zoom (like iOS/Android use) but it worked. Most notably it doesn't work in Chrome (did before) but I haven't noticed it working in any other apps. In windows 8 desktop mode, pinch to zoom doesn't seem to work at all. It doesn't even work in One Note 2010, which, if I recall correctly, had granular zoom in Windows 7. I have an (older) 2 touch point multi-touch monitor, and I can see the visual feedback that the two touch points and coming closer/farther apart, but it doesn't zoom. Note I'm using the touchscreen, not a touchpad or the Arch mouse or other peripherals. Can I enable this somehow or is it gone from Desktop mode? It works fine in Metro apps. Additionally I get weird visual feedback when placing my second finger on the screen; a shrinking transparent square appears somewhere between the two fingers, visually similar to the Right Click visual queue when long-pressing. It's not a right click though, I can't tell what, if anything, it's doing.

• Convert IIS / Tomcat Web Application to a multi-server environment.

  I have an existing web application built in .Net, running on IIS that leverages a java servlet that we have running on Tomcat 5.5. We need to scale the application and I'm confused about what relates to our situation and what we need to do to get the servlet running on multiple servers. Right now I have 4 servers that can each individually process results, it almost seems like all I should have to do is add the ajp13 worker processes from three additional machines to the machine hosting the load balancer worker. But I can't imagine it should be that easy. What do I need to do to distribute the Tomcat load to the extra three machines? Thanks. Update: The current configuration is using a workers2.properties configuration file. From all of the documentation online I have not been able to determine the distinction between the workers.properties and the workers2.properties. Most of the examples that I have found are configuring the workers.properties and revolve around adding workers and registering them in the worker.list element. The workers2.properties does not appears to have a worker.list element and the syntax is different enough between the workers.properties and the workers2.properties that I'm doubtful that I can add that element. If I just add my multiple AJP workers to the workers2.properties file do I need to worry about the apparent lack of a worker.list element? • Mapping of memory addresses to physical modules in Windows XP

  I plan to run 32-bit Windows XP on a workstation with dual processors, based on Intel's Nehalem microarchitecture, and triple channel RAM. Even though XP is limited to 4 GB of RAM, my understanding is that it will function with more than 4 GB installed, but will only expose 4 GB (or slightly less). My question is: Assuming that 6 GB of RAM is installed in six 1 GB modules, which physical 4 GB will Windows actually map into its address space? In particular: Will it use all six 1 GB modules, taking advantage of all memory channels? (My guess is yes, and that the mapping to individual modules within a group happens in hardware.) Will it map 2 GB of address space to each of the two NUMA nodes (as each processor has it's own memory interface), or will one processor get fast access to 3 GB of RAM, while the other only has 1 GB? I am looking for the best pattern to call WCF service method Should I create the client proxy instance every time I call the service method and close the client as soon as I am done with that? When I profiled my client application, I could see that it is taking lot of time to get the Channel while initializing the proxy client Should I use a Singleton pattern for the client proxy so that I can use the only once instance and get rid of the re-initializing overhead?   I have a Samsung LD220Z multi touch monitor, and when I'm experimenting with some WPF and touch features the touch events arent firing. The mouse down event seems to be firing however. Does this mean that I have to take into account that not all touch screen behave the same, and how do I get the touch inputs on my screen? I've tried the Windows 7 Touch pack that microsoft released. And the multi touch features seems to work there. Any suggestion on how to proceed with this?

• chrooting user causes "connection closed" message when using sftp

  First off I am a linux newbie so please don't assume much knowledge. I am using CentOS 5.8 (final) and using OpenSSH version 5.8p1. I have made a user playwithbits and I am attempting to chroot them to the directory home/nginx/domains/playwithbits/public I am using the following match statement in my sshd_config file: Match group web-root-locked ChrootDirectory /home/nginx/domains/%u/public X11Forwarding no AllowTcpForwarding no ForceCommand /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server # id playwithbits returns: uid=504(playwithbits) gid=504(playwithbits) groups=504(playwithbits),507(web-root-locked) I have changed the user's home directory to: home/nginx/domains/playwithbits/public Now when I attempt to sftp in with this user I instantly get the message: connection closed Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? • Disable Windows 8 edge gestures/hot corners for multi-touch applications while running in full screen

  I have a full screen AS3 game maby with Adobe AIR that runs in Windows 7. In this game it may not be easy to exit (think about kiosk mode, only exit by pressing esc and enter a password). Now I want this game to run in Windows 8. The game is working like expected but the anoying things are these edge gestures/hot corners (left, top, right, bottom) and the shortcuts. I've read articles but none helped me. People talk about registery edits, but I dont get this working + the user needs to restart his/hers computer. I want to open my game, turn off gestures/hot corners and when the game closes the gestures/hot corners need to come back available again. I have seen some applications doing the same what I want to accomplish. I found this so I am able to detect the gestures. But how to ignore they're actions? I also read ASUS Smart Gestures but this is for the touch-pad. And I have tried Classic Shell but I need to disable the edge gestures/hot corners without such programs, just on-the-fly. I also found this but I don't know how to implement this.   I have a template for an email that I've put in a localized strings file, and I'm loading the string with the NSLocalizedString macro. I'd rather not make each line its own string with a unique key. In Objective-C, I can create a human-readable multiline string like so: NSString *email = @"Hello %@,\n" "\n" "Check out %@.\n" "\n" "Sincerely,\n" "\n" "%@"; I tried to put that in a .strings file with: "email" = "Hello %@,\n" "\n" "Check out %@.\n" "\n" "Sincerely,\n" "\n" "%@"; But I get the following error at build time: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary. email-template.strings: Unexpected character " at line 1 Command /Developer/Library/Xcode/Plug-ins/CoreBuildTasks.xcplugin/Contents/Resources/copystrings failed with exit code 1 I can concatenate it all together like this: "email" = "Hello %@,\n\nCheck out %@.\n\nSincerely,\n\n%@"; But that will be a mess to maintain, particularly as the email gets longer. Is there a way to do this in a localized strings file? I've already tried adding backslashes at the end of each line, to no avail.

What i need is something very similar to having tabcontrol with multiple pages and navigation buttons bellow, but i dont think that tab control is best for this task. I would like to have each view to be in seperate .xaml + class file. AND- it would be cool to have some animiation, when navigating to another page (like old page slides away or something like that. What would be best technique to achieve this?

• Java native methods issues with SUN JVM (jdk1.5.0_14) and multi-core CPU’s

  We are hosting an application on SUN JVM that handles a lot of XML parsing using Jaxb. The application is parsing the XML fine using JRockit 5 but when using the SUN JVM the JVM spends a majority of it’s time on native methods such as java-lang.System.arraycopy, java.lang.String.intern and java.lang.ClassLoader.getPackage. The CPU load is approx. 60% higher when using SUN JVM compared with JRockit. Even stranger is that when we only run the application server using one core (in WMWare) the problem disappears. As I have an excel with 20 columns, now want to use AutoFilter function to search in some columns if it contains one value (Ex: ID010). what i want is it'll display all rows that have at least one column contains ID010. Currently, i use the below code to search.
