• How to reduce the windows network browsing broadcast timeout or disable this function?

  Hello everyone. My residential network is make of 300 vlans (one per room). To browse them we are using a wins server. My problem is that when I try to browse the network, windows first tries to find the neighborhood using some broadcast, and only then does it query the wins server. This "broadcast period" lasts exactly 30 seconds and is very annoying. Can I reduce it, or can I completely disable this broadcast network discovery feature from my system? • /manual/cache folder on my server?

  Hi all, On our site's server, once managed by someone who's no longer with us, there's a folder named "/manual/cache" which contains txt files named+like+this, mostly using pornographic-related keywords. The content is mainly spam-like gibberish. My assumption on the matter is that it's somehow used to spam search engines, but I might be wrong, which is the reason of my question here. Any idea what it might mean/contain? As an additionnal note, the person's hiring period oddly correspond to the dates of the files, which seem to have automagically stopped being generated after the date we parted ways.

• Migrate servers without losing any data / time-limited MySQL dump?

  Is there a way to migrate from an old dedicated server to a new one without losing any data in-between - and with no downtime? In the past, I've had to lose MySQL data between the time when the new server goes up (i.e., all files transferred, system up and ready), and when I take the old server down (data still transferred to old until new one takes over). There is also a short period where both are down for DNS, etc., to refresh. Is there a way for MySQL/root to easily transfer all data that was updated/inserted between a certain time frame?

For my project proposal, I need to calculate what is my server requirements to overcome the traffic I explained below? and if possible, I want to learn what is approximate cost of such server? I am giving the maximum expected values for calculation : -Database will be in mysql (Average service time of DB is 100-110ms in my computer[i5,4GB Ram]) -A request will transfer 150Kb data for each request on average. -Total user count : 1m -Active user count : 50k -Estimated request/sec for 1 active user : 0.06 -Total expected request/second to the server = ~5000 I am expecting this traffic between 20:00-1:00 everyday and then this values will decrease to 1/10 rest of the day. Is there any solution to this? [e.g increasing server capacity in a specific time period everyday to reduce cost]

• Create my own custom ellipsis bullet point

  I regularly use an ellipsis as a bullet point in a list of items in Word/Outlook 2010. Example: I like summer because... ... it's warm out. ... we go on vacation. ... my birthday is in July. Currently in Word/Outlook if you type certain characters like a hyphen and hit space, it will automatically start a bulleted list using the hyphen. I would really like the same functionality with the ellipsis. When I type the third period and hit space, start a bulleted list. Does anyone know of a way to do this? Registry hack? Hidden Word Setting?

  cPanel sent me the following email: IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email. This is cPanel stats runner on ***.***.com! While processing the log files for user ***, the cpu has been maxed out for more than a 6 hour period. The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of this email is 04:41:14 up 15 days, 22:36, 0 users, load average: 7.66, 7.84, 8.00 You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take steps to lower the load. If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load; Edit /var/cpanel/cpanel.config and change extracpus to a number larger then 0 (run /usr/local/cpanel/startup afterwards to pickup the changes). How can I lower the load?

• Duplicate of IPSEC certificate template not displaying

  I am working on getting IPSEC working on computers outside my domain. I am unable to get a duplicate of the IPSec Offline Request template to show on the web interface. My CA is 2008 R2 Enterprise and the permissions on the template should be adequate to allow me access (my account has read and enroll). If I publish the original template it functions as desired. I also have other custom templates in use (although using autoenrollment). The duplicate is almost identical to the original, excepting that it has a longer validity period and the private key is marked as exportable. How do I debug at this point?

• Should I install an AV product on my domain controllers?

  Should I run a server-specific antivirus, regular antivirus, or no antivirus at all on my servers, particularly my Domain Controllers? Here's some background about why I'm asking this question: I've never questioned that antivirus software should be running on all windows machines, period. Lately I've had some obscure Active Directory related issues that I have tracked down to antivirus software running on our domain controllers. The specific issue was that Symantec Endpoint Protection was running on all domain controllers. Occasionally, our Exchange server triggered a false-positive in Symantec's "Network Threat Protection" on each DC in sequence. After exhausting access to all DCs, Exchange began refusing requests, presumably because it could not communicate with any Global Catalog servers or perform any authentication. Outages would last about ten minutes at a time, and would occur once every few days. It took a long time to isolate the problem because it was not easily reproducible and generally investigation was done after the issue resolved itself.

• unlock database files when SQL server is idle

  In my development/test environment on my laptop, I can't back up the SQL server database files because the file handles are kept permanently open by SQL server (VSS doesn't work because the drive is truecrypted) I was hoping there may be some setting in SQL server that can make it unlock the data files after a certain period of inactivity and automatically open them again on demand, but I can't find anything. I don't really want to be dumping the database out every night because it's only a development environment. apart from stopping sql server before I do the backup is there any other solution?

  In Windows, a single right click (i.e., with release) displays a context menu on the screen, allowing you to select the appropriate choice with a further click from either button. In Mint 13, Cinnamon, it's hold down the right button, drag, then release on the appropriate menu choice. Both methods are fine, but constantly using both OSs regularly, I'm doing the Windows procedure in Mint by mistake all the time. This makes the single right click and release bring up the context menu and immediately action the first menu choice. Is there any mechanism to ignore right-button-up if a substantial dragging action or time period hasn't occurred, and have Mint looking for a further click to select?

Cache contention On a large site, if you are using MyISAM, contention occurs in the database tables when the cache is forced to clear after a node or a comment is added. With tens of thousands of filter text snippets needing to be deleted, the table will be locked for a long period, and any accesses to it will be queued pending the purge of the data in it. The same is true for the page cache as well. This often causes a "site hang" for a minute or two. During that time new requests keep piling up, and if you do not have the MaxClients parameter in Apache setup correctly, the system can go into thrashing because of excessive swapping.

• How to schedule download of windows 7 updates?

  To put it short: I'd like to schedule my windows updates to start/stop at certain times of day. How can I do this? More explanation: This is because my internet traffic is limited by ISP and it's free only during a specific period throughout the day (2:00am-7:00am). I've set windows update setting to check for updates but notify me before downloading in order to prevent it from automatically using up my traffic. But then I have to manually tell it when to start downloading. I obviously don't want to stay up that late just to push a button. So again, how can I schedule windows updates to start/stop at specified times?

  How to limit the connection duration per client per period (say, one MAC-address can connect only for 3 hours per week to the network). Where could be defined such a rule? In the firewall? So the rule should define not statically times (this is simple), when the client is allowed to access the network, but the duration of the connection per day/week/month, etc. How/where to implement such rules? Is it possible to do so with OpenWRT/DD-WRT?

• DIagnosing another Windows 7 Lockup

  Im running windows 7 on a fairly modern machine (8gb ram, amd fx-6100, gtx 560ti) and I notice that periodically my windows seems to just hang for a little while. Frequently this occurs after a cold boot and i start up five or six small to medium sized programs, but also occasionally it occurs during normal usage. Basically what occurs is the screen locks up, there is no keyboard responsiveness for a period of 30 seconds to a full minute - after a bit of patience, control is returned, but I'm interested in figuring out what is causing such lockups. I checked the event log and dont see any issues, and all i can see in task manager is a spike in cpu and memory usage right after this occurs. Any tips on how to even begin to diagnose this? Thanks.

  Is there a way i can use a rule or "timer" of some sort to turn on out of office, or enable an auto reply for 1 mailbox (Sales mailbox) within a time period. Reason: We deal with all timezones, we only open 6am-8pm. critical sales are sometimes lost the automatic reply will involve a telephone number for emergency sales. (yes, spam i know) I wish the auto reply to come from "[email protected]" if this is possible. I've lokekd at transport rules, cant see anything.   I have a Linux machine which runs ~10 in house written processes. Every other day(!) the machine completely runs out of RAM, goes into swap and becomes unresponsive. This happens quickly over a period of a couple of seconds, so it's not feasible to sit watching the machine until it dies. It's a sudden leak, not a gradual one, so top(1) doesn't give any indications something bad may about to happen. What is the best way of identifying which process(es) are causing the trouble?

• Editing files on linux server from windows

  I want to edit text files on Linux server from Windows, using text editor like Notepad++ or UltraEdit. I've managed to do so using WinSCP. It can edit files remotely and offers me to choose local application to open those files. That is exactly what I need, but when I hit ctrl-s (not every time, in about 50% cases), it waits for around 10 seconds, alerts that connection has failed, and offers me to "abort". When I click abort, it instantly reconnect and save file. So does anybody knows any other way to edit files remotely without this annoying waiting period.

• Vista Home Premium won't connect to network.

  I deinstalled some software (e.g. some Toolbars for IE and Norton security suite, because the free trial period of 60 days is run out and so i want to switch to microsofts free security essentials). But now i cannot connect to the network again: Neither over LAN nor over WiFi. Neither with standard DHCP ON (sets a 169.254.x.y address) nor with fixed IP-Address. No error during changing the settings. Ping to the Gateway e.g. doesn't work and gives "generall failure". The DHCP-Client sets no IP-Address. There is allways only 'local access' on every network-connection. i ran out of ideas, please help. UPDATE per 2011-03-11: I followed each and every hint but nothing changed. I did a research on microsofts homepage through all the sites belonging to network but nothing helped. What can i do next?

  We got a website with realtime transactions. The past few days we experienced some slowness during a period of time. Usually the slowness last for 5 minutes. And also during the slowness we noticed that sometimes we can not connect to SSH and FTP or sometimes very slow to connect to those services. Currently we are trying to identify the issue. I know about one such great tool - that is "Comodo firewall". It can smoothly block and accurately display apps accessing internet. The only problem of installing this is, Windows recommends only one firewall apps and as Im running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate there will be complications if I install this one. I need a tool which can accurately display which apps are accessing internet (through which port) and how much data they are receiving or sending. I also need some arrangement within the app so that I can easily temporarily block that app from accessing internet.

  We had a major SharePoint outage a few months back because a user wedged their keyboard in such a way as to cause the Enter button to be pressed indefinitely. The user was on a customized people search page and hundreds of POSTs by the same user were submitted asynchronously, which overloaded the server. Because I work in a large organization, I am looking for a more global way to prevent this from happening. Is there a way to prevent multiple web form submissions by a common user within a short period of time within IIS? I am aware we can write javascript to disable the button after it is clicked, but we are hoping to prevent this issue from occurring on other pages where a similar possibility may exist. Update: It appears looking at the source code, the javascript is performing a document.location = url, whenever keycode 13 (Enter) is pressed. Again, we can write JS to prevent this in this location, but we also want to be able to guard against this kind of issue more generally... preferably at the IIS level.

  I am new to nagios and we have a small issue I need to ask assistance with. Many of the machines that we monitor can go unresponsive for a bit when some very intensive cpu tasks are run. This makes nagios send warnings and alerts while these hosts are busy reporting things like 'ping timeout' or 'zombie processes' and even swap space warnings, but in actuality there is not a problem. Is there a way to configure nagios to not send such alerts, but check x number of times over a period of time and only then send an alert at the end of that time if the server in question has not recovered?. Looking at the commands.cfg file, I see entries like this: define command{ command_name check_local_swap command_line $USER1$/check_swap -w $ARG1$ -c $ARG2$ } How could I modify this example to accomplish what I want above.
