• What's a good way to check that a player has clicked on an object in a 3D game?

  I'm programming a 3D game (using C++ and OpenGL), and I have a few 3D objects in the scene, we can say they are boxes for this example. I want to let the player click on those boxes to select them (ie. they might change color) with the typical restriction like if more than one box is located where the user clicked, only the one closest to the camera would get selected. What would be the best way to do this? The fact that these objects go through several transforms before getting to window coordinates is what makes this a bit tricky. One approach I thought about was that if the player clicks on the screen, I could normalize the x,y coordinates of mouse click and then transform the bounding box coordinates of the objects into clip-space so that I could compare then to the normalized mouse coordinates. I guess I could then do some sort of ray-box collision test to see if any objects lie as the path of the mouse click. I'm afraid I might be over complicating it. Any better methods out there?

• Dell Inspiron7520 and ubntu 12.04 issues

  I have a DELL Inspiron 7520 in the highest configuration: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM processor (6M Cache, up to 3.1 GHz) 15.6" Full High Definition (1080p) LED Display 8GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz 1TB 5400RPM SATA HDD + 32GB mSATA SSD w/Intel Smart Response Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD) AMD Radeon™ HD 7730M 2GB 6.09 lbs and I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 few days ago and I'm facing some issues: 1) sometimes the whole ntb freezes and I have to hold power button for 5 secs to shut it down. I think it is something with VGA and connected external monitor. I have read somewhere that it is already a reported bug, but what I am not sure about that it is doing sporadically. Sometimes it freezes right after I log in, sometime I ran few hours and then it freezes. I am using those proprietary drivers but I wasn't been able to install those with updates. 2) the next issue is the fan is quite noisy even when the ntb is almost Idle. (max 10% CPU usage). Can you recommend me some software which could do this power management to lower the noise? I have tried CPU frequency scaling indicator, but it seems that it has not any effects. 3) and issue no. 3: when I want to log out, restart or shutdown using the menu in upper right corner the upper and left trays disappear, but programs are still running and they won't close to complete log out or shutting down the OS. When I use the CLI command, it works fine. Thanks for any help you can provide.

• How do I get mouse x / y of the world plane in Unity?

  I am trying to make a tiled landscape. The terrain itself is not made from tiles but the world has a grid which I define. I would like to place boxes/rectangles which snap to this grid, at runtime, but in order for me to do that I must get a projection from the user screen to the real-world coordinates. I have tried various examples using the Ray class but nothing worked. It compiles and outputs a constant value no matter where I put the mouse. I have tried to add some tiles and try to detect them but no luck. I also tried with one plane as big as my world but still no luck. I am using C# but even a JS version would be helpful. This technique involves calculating which tile the mouse is under by the x and y positions. Perhaps detecting which tile itself is being pointed to would be a simpler task, at which point I can just retrieve its i/j properties. • Round-twice error in .NET's Double.ToString method

  Mathematically, consider for this question the rational number 8725724278030350 / 2**48 where ** in the denominator denotes exponentiation, i.e. the denominator is 2 to the 48th power. (The fraction is not in lowest terms, reducible by 2.) This number is exactly representable as a System.Double. Its decimal expansion is 31.0000000000000'49'73799150320701301097869873046875 (exact) where the apostrophes do not represent missing digits but merely mark the boudaries where rounding to 15 resp. 17 digits is to be performed. Note the following: If this number is rounded to 15 digits, the result will be 31 (followed by thirteen 0s) because the next digits (49...) begin with a 4 (meaning round down). But if the number is first rounded to 17 digits and then rounded to 15 digits, the result could be 31.0000000000001. This is because the first rounding rounds up by increasing the 49... digits to 50 (terminates) (next digits were 73...), and the second rounding might then round up again (when the midpoint-rounding rule says "round away from zero"). (There are many more numbers with the above characteristics, of course.) Now, it turns out that .NET's standard string representation of this number is "31.0000000000001". The question: Isn't this a bug? By standard string representation we mean the String produced by the parameterles Double.ToString() instance method which is of course identical to what is produced by ToString("G"). An interesting thing to note is that if you cast the above number to System.Decimal then you get a decimal that is 31 exactly! See this Stack Overflow question for a discussion of the surprising fact that casting a Double to Decimal involves first rounding to 15 digits. This means that casting to Decimal makes a correct round to 15 digits, whereas calling ToSting() makes an incorrect one. To sum up, we have a floating-point number that, when output to the user, is 31.0000000000001, but when converted to Decimal (where 29 digits are available), becomes 31 exactly. This is unfortunate. • "must be convertible to System.Web.UI.Page" using custom base page in Visual Studio 2010

  I have a HUGE problem. We just converted our large project to a Visual Studio 2010 solution, but maintained .Net 3.5 targets. This seemed to go swimmingly, almost too easy. Today I just encountered a huge problem. When we add a new asp.net tag to a page the designer class is not being updated. I looked around and noticed that the type specified in the Page's Inherits attribute was underlined in red. Hovering over that gives the error "must be convertible to System.Web.UI.Page". Obviously the designer isn't casting the page correctly and it's because we are using a custom base page, just as we had been with no problems in VS 2008. Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, what's the solution. This is a show-stopper for us to use VS 2010 (and lots of egg on our faces for moving to it in the first place).

It would help me a lot because I don't know how to make a universal paging usercontrol for all my datagrids in the projects for different database tables. DataGrid converts received DataContext from object to some kind of list. How it is implemented. I tried to do some casting from object to IQueryable to generalize thinig because base class of every entity in the entity model is EntityObject class. But it doesen't work in runtime although I don't receive complains at design time.

  HI all misters When I try Debug my project (unit tests) i get the following error: LoadFromContext was detected Message: The assembly named 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.Common' was loaded from 'file:///C:/Program Files/Microsoft Visual Studio 8/Common7/IDE/PrivateAssemblies/Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.Common.DLL' using the LoadFrom context. The use of this context can result in unexpected behavior for serialization, casting and dependency resolution. In almost all cases, it is recommended that the LoadFrom context be avoided. This can be done by installing assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache or in the ApplicationBase directory and using Assembly.Load when explicitly loading assemblies. It's nightmare for me...!!! I am using VS 2008 profession, XP sp2 Any suggestions , please ?? Thanks.

• Overriding Equals method in Structs

  I've looked for overriding guidelines for structs, but all I can find is for classes. At first I thought I wouldn't have to check to see if the passed object was null, as structs are value types and can't be null. But now that I come to think of it, as equals signature is public bool Equals(object obj) it seems there is nothing preventing the user of my struct to be trying to compare it with an arbitrary reference type. My second point concerns the casting I (think I) have to make before I compare my private fields in my struct. How am I supposed to cast the object to my struct's type?   I have a client application developed in .net seding a request to wcf service and supposed to send reponse .if execution time with in 1 minute,there is no error,if it exceeds 1 minute the error is Inner exception: This request operation sent to net.tcp://localhost:18001/PitToPort/2008/01/30/StockpileService/tcp did not receive a reply within the configured timeout (00:01:00). The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout. This may be because the service is still processing the operation or because the service was unable to send a reply message. Please consider increasing the operation timeout (by casting the channel/proxy to IContextChannel and setting the OperationTimeout property) and ensure that the service is able to connect to the client how to increase the time out and how?What is the best solution.

  With a view model containing the field: public bool? IsDefault { get; set; } I get an error when trying to map in the view: <%= Html.CheckBoxFor(model => model.IsDefault) %> Cannot implicitly convert type 'bool?' to 'bool'. An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?) I've tried casting, and using .Value and neither worked. Note the behaviour I would like is that submitting the form should set IsDefault in the model to true or false. A value of null simply means that the model has not been populated.

  I have a member function in a class that has a callback, but the callback isn't strictly neccessary, so it has a default callback, which is empty. It seems to work fine, but I get an annoying warning: warning: converting from ‘void (ClassName::*)()’ to ‘void (*)()’ I'm trying to figure out what it means and how to turn it off (or fix it if I really am doing something wrong). Here's some simple code: class ClassName{ public: void doSomething(void (*callbackFunction)() = (void(*)()) &ClassName::doNothing){ callbackFunction(); } void doNothing(){} }; int main(){ ClassName x; x.doSomething(); return 0; } Note: If I do this (without explicitly casting it as a void(*)()): void doSomething(void (*callbackFunction)() = &ClassName::doNothing) I get this: main.cpp:3: error: default argument for parameter of type ‘void (*)()’ has type ‘void (ClassName::*)()’

  I need to display incremented single characters to denote footnotes in a table of data in a JSP. In Java I would normally have a char variable and just increment it, or convert an int to a char by casting it (e.g. (char)(i + 97) to convert a 0-based index to a-z). I can't figure out how to do this in expression language short of writing my own JSTL function. Does anyone know how to convert an int to char in EL? Or how to increment a char variable in EL? Or possibly even a better technique to do what I'm trying to do in JSP/EL? Example of what I need to be able to produce: a mydata b myotherdata ... a first footnote b second footnote

• Multiplying char and int together in C

  Today I found the following: #include <stdio.h> int main(){ char x = 255; int z = ((int)x)*2; printf("%d\n", z); //prints -2 return 0; } So basically I'm getting an overflow because the size limit is determined by the operands on the right side of the = sign?? Why doesn't casting it to int before multiplying work? In this case I'm using a char and int, but if I use "long" and "long long int" (c99), then I get similar behaviour. Is it generally advised against doing arithmetic with operands of different sizes?

• MediaElement.Position behaviour and Windows Phone 7 issue

  I have a problem, I have written a simple Media Player for Windows Phone 7 and can Play, Stop and control the Volume of a Video (loaded from a URI) however when I try to set the position, this causes the application to freeze. I have used both these lines, but either does not work: Player.Position = new TimeSpan(0, 0, 0, 0, (int)Position.Value); Player.Position = TimeSpan.FromSeconds((int)(Position.Value)); I do have this event handler: void Player_MediaOpened(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { Position.Maximum = Player.NaturalDuration.TimeSpan.TotalMilliseconds; } And have tried using the Seconds value, casting to Ints etc, however everytime I try to set the Position, the app freezes. The video otherwise plays normally - anyone know what the problem may be here?

So from product view I'm returning variable {{stock}} which is my amount and then I'm trying to use it in template : <div class="bar_in" width="{% widthratio {{stock}} 10 100 %}px" style="background:black;"></div> But it constantly give me "Could not parse the remainder: '{{stock}}' from '{{stock}}' " error. I've tried casting it as int but still the same problem. How to make it work properly ?

  I am developing a .NET 3.5 Web Forms based website that uses URL Routing. So far I have created a few routes and I have had no issue. I now have a .ashx file that is going to handle sending .pdf files from a table in SQL Server to the website when someone clicks on a link. Normally when I create a Handler it would look like this: return BuildManager.CreateInstanceFromVirtualPath("~/ViewItem.aspx", typeof(Page)) as Page; For my .ashx file I tried: return BuildManager.CreateInstanceFromVirtualPath("~/FileServer.ashx", typeof(Page)) as Page; This doesn't work though because fileserver.ashx is not a page so casting it as typeof(Page)) as Page is going to fail. What do I cast the VirtualPath as instead of Page or is there some other way I should be doing this.

• ScrollPane has type of "movieclip" in attached movieclip

  var spw:MovieClip = contentsLayer.attachMovie("ScrollPaneWrapper", "ScrollPaneWrapper123", contentsLayer.getNextHighestDepth()); var sp_:ScrollPane = spw.sp; Here typeof(sp_) == "movieclip" and I can't set any content to it. I've tried exporting it for ActionScript, exporting the wrapper movieclip "ScrollPaneWrapper" and "Export in Frame 1" and all combinations of these options. What's more weird is that I have another Flash project in which I can access the ScrollPane as expected and I can't tell any differences between the two projects. Casting the spw.sp to ScrollPane results in null.

• InvalidCastException when creating an instance using assembly.CreateInstance

  I'm looking for an explanation for the following - I have an assembly I'm loading using Assembly assembly = Assembly.LoadFrom(filename); I then loop on all the types in the assembly, and wish to try and find out if a type implements a particular interface and if so I want an instance of that type, I've tried several things which did not work, but when I fell back to the most basic (and probably inefficient) way, I realised there's something more fundamental I don't understand - foreach (Type t in assembly.GetTypes()) { foreach (Type i in t.GetInterfaces()) { if (i.FullName == pluginInterfaceType.FullName) { object o = assembly.CreateInstance(t.ToString()); IInterface plugin = (IInterface)o; That last line causes an InvalidCastException, despite the fact that the type created definitely implements that interface. Further more - if I use Activator.CreateInstance instead of Assembly.CreateInstance (which I don't want to do), casting to the interface works just fine.
