  • HTG Explains: How Internet Explorer Saves Your Passwords and How to Manage Them

    - by Taylor Gibb
Privacy is very important when it comes to the digital world, but do you know exactly how your browser saves your passwords ? Read on to find out what goes on behind the scenes. When it comes to web applications, there are many different types of authentication. One of the types is called basic authentication, which is when you navigate to website and a dialog box opens to ask for a username and password. This also happens to be the authentication mechanism defined in the RFC for HTTP. You can see in the screen shot above that there is a check box that you can use to remember your credentials, but what does that do ? You might also ask yourself what happens if you are not using Basic authentication. There is another type of authentication called Form authentication, this is when the authentication is built right into the web application, like the How-To Geek website. This allows the Developer to control the look and feel of the form that we use to log in. • How to tune down the Hyperic built-in postgresql database for a small setup

    - by Svish
We are testing out Hyperic 4.5.1 in a quite small environment for now. Currently there are just 1-5 agents and there probably won't be any more than 10-15. When I run ps ax there are 20(!) postgres processes running. For a small setup like this, that can't be necessary, can it? I'm a software developer and don't have much experience with setting up servers and such though, so don't really know. Either way, what settings are appropriate for a small Hyperic setup like this? Current, default and untouched configuration file, hqdb/data/postgresql.conf: # ----------------------------- # PostgreSQL configuration file # ----------------------------- # # This file consists of lines of the form: # # name = value # # (The '=' is optional.) White space may be used. Comments are introduced # with '#' anywhere on a line. The complete list of option names and # allowed values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation. The # commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values. # # Please note that re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it # to the default value, unless you restart the server. # # Any option can also be given as a command line switch to the server, # e.g., 'postgres -c log_connections=on'. Some options can be changed at # run-time with the 'SET' SQL command. # # This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a # SIGHUP. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the # server for the changes to take effect, or use "pg_ctl reload". Some # settings, which are marked below, require a server shutdown and restart # to take effect. # # Memory units: kB = kilobytes MB = megabytes GB = gigabytes # Time units: ms = milliseconds s = seconds min = minutes h = hours d = days #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # FILE LOCATIONS #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # The default values of these variables are driven from the -D command line # switch or PGDATA environment variable, represented here as ConfigDir. #data_directory = 'ConfigDir' # use data in another directory # (change requires restart) #hba_file = 'ConfigDir/pg_hba.conf' # host-based authentication file # (change requires restart) #ident_file = 'ConfigDir/pg_ident.conf' # ident configuration file # (change requires restart) # If external_pid_file is not explicitly set, no extra PID file is written. #external_pid_file = '(none)' # write an extra PID file # (change requires restart) #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # CONNECTIONS AND AUTHENTICATION #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # - Connection Settings - #listen_addresses = 'localhost' # what IP address(es) to listen on; # comma-separated list of addresses; # defaults to 'localhost', '*' = all # (change requires restart) port = 9432 # (change requires restart) max_connections = 100 # (change requires restart) # Note: increasing max_connections costs ~400 bytes of shared memory per # connection slot, plus lock space (see max_locks_per_transaction). - by broun
Recently found a behaviour where my application had a connection in TCP Close_wait state till the app was restarted (after about 5 hours). But during this period the SUnreclaim space was also increasing constantly and went down on restart. The application is runnning on a rhel5 os and Im not very familiar with the memory management system. Would appreciate if someone clould tell me what extactly is the Ureclaim space and why it is increasing in sync with the close_wait.

  • Storage subsystem borking after server restart (all on a Parallel SCSI bus)

    - by Dat Chu
I have a server (with a SCSI HBA) connected to two Promise VTrak M310p RAID enclosure on the same bus. Everything is working fine until I have to restart my server. Once restarted, the server can no longer communicate with the enclosures: lots of read errors and bus resets. I have to turn off both enclosure, then turn off the server, then turn on the enclosure, then turn on the server for things to work. I don't believe this is the normal behavior, what could I be missing?

  • Virtual Box state not saving upon restart/reset/shutdown - reverting to an earlier state

    - by user638756
Every time I restart/shut down my VM in VirtualBox (image is Ubuntu 10.02), whenever I start it back up, it reverts to the state it was in after I installed Guest Additions. This is extremely frustrating as every time I make progress on a project, whenever it restarts (mostly from crashing), I have to redo mostly everything. Is this a known problem with Guest Additions or with Virtual Box in general, and if so is there some solution?

  • Is there an equivalent command for 'init.d/networking restart' in OS X

    - by l0c0b0x
From time to time, I've encountered issues with OS X clients' network connections (Wired and Wireless, Leopard/Snow Leopard) where nothing will fix the issue, until you reboot. Is there a particular 'network service/process' I should be watching out for? I was thinking it would be useful to know of a command that will reset a 'network connection' type service/process (same as running a sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart). Thanks!

  • Windows Server 2008 DNS - restart after changing forwarder?

    - by Jim
I had a dns forwarder configured that seems to be choking on a particular server name so I switched to using google's dns as a forwarder (8.8.4.4). When I change that setting in Windows DNS (Server 2008 R2) Do i need to restart the dns service for the change to take effect? I ask because i can do a nslookup on the name using 8.8.4.4 and it resolves but even with 8.8.4.4 in my forwarders list it will not resolve when i run nslookup on my local DNS server.

  • Auto-start the SQL Server Agent after a computer restart

    - by Dreas Grech
I am using the SQL Server Agent to run some jobs every day, but the problem is that whenever the server (the machine itself) is restarted, the SQL Server Agent doesn't automatically start when the computer boots back up again...and I have to start it manually myself. How can I set the Server Agent to Auto-Start after a computer restart? Is there a particular Windows Service I need to set as auto-start ?

However, I'd also like some alternatives, I'd rather know WHY yum is taking up all these resources. I'm fairly new to running servers, so I'd appreciate any help.
