  • Top-Rated JavaScript Blogs

    - by Andreas Grech
I am currently trying to find some blogs that talk (almost solely) on the JavaScript Language, and this is due to the fact that most of the time, bloggers with real life experience at work or at home development can explain more clearly and concisely certain quirks and hidden features than most 'Official Language Specifications' Below find a list of blogs that are JavaScript based (will update the list as more answers flow in): DHTML Kitchen, by Garrett Smith Robert's Talk, by Robert Nyman EJohn, by John Resig (of jQuery) Crockford's JavaScript Page, by Douglas Crockford Dean.edwards.name, by Dean Edwards Ajaxian, by various (@Martin) The JavaScript Weblog, by various SitePoint's JavaScript and CSS Page, by various AjaxBlog, by various Eric Lippert's Blog, by Eric Lippert (talks about JScript and JScript.Net) Web Bug Track, by various (@scunliffe) The Strange Zen Of JavaScript , by Scott Andrew Alex Russell (of Dojo) (@Eran Galperin) Ariel Flesler (@Eran Galperin) Nihilogic, by Jacob Seidelin (@llimllib) Peter's Blog, by Peter Michaux (@Borgar) Flagrant Badassery, by Steve Levithan (@Borgar) ./with Imagination, by Dustin Diaz (@Borgar) HedgerWow (@Borgar) Dreaming in Javascript, by Nosredna spudly.shuoink.com, by Stephen Sorensen Yahoo! • Query MySQL data from Excel (or vice-versa)

    - by Charles
I'm trying to automate a tedious problem. I get large Excel (.xls or .csv, whatever's more convenient) files with lists of people. I want to compare these against my MySQL database.* At the moment I'm exporting MySQL tables and reading them from an Excel spreadsheet. At that point it's not difficult to use =LOOKUP() and such commands to do the work I need, and of course the various text processing I need to do is easy enough to do in Excel. But I can't help but think that this is more work than it needs to be. Is there some way to get at the MySQL data directly from Excel? Alternately, is there a way I could access a reasonably large (~10k records) csv file in a sql script? This seems to be rather basic, but I haven't managed to make it work so far. I found an ODBC connection for MySQL but that doesn't seem to do what I need. In particular, I'm testing whether the name matches or whether any of four email addresses match. I also return information on what matched for the benefit of the next person to use the data, something like "Name 'Bob Smith' not found, but 'Robert Smith' matches on email address robert.smith@foo".

  • When a server gets rooted, should I disconnect network or power?

    - by Aleksandr Levchuk
When a server gets rooted (e.g. a situation like this), one of the first things that should be done is containment. Quoting from Robert Moir's Answer: "disconnect the victim from its muggers" A server can be contained by pulling the network cable or the power cable. Taking into consideration the need for: Protecting victims from further damage Executing successful forensics (Possibly) Protecting valuable data on the server Which method is better?

  • MVC2: "File not found" after view is painted

    - by Dave Hanna
This is wierd. First, I'm building a site based on someone else's framework (Piers Lawson: Creating a RESTful Web Service using MVC ), so I'm not entirely sure what's going on under the covers. But when I run it in VS 2010 by pressing F5, it brings up the Home page, and THEN traps an error in Application_Error. The error is "File does not exist" exception. But I have no idea what file it's looking for. Where does flow control go after the View is finished displaying? How can I break to find out what it's looking for?

  • How can I customize the title bar on JFrame?

    - by Jonas
I would like to have a customized title bar in my Java Swing desktop application. What is the best way to do that? I can use a "Swing-title bar" by using the following code in the constructor for my JFrame: this.setUndecorated(true); this.getRootPane().setWindowDecorationStyle(JRootPane.FRAME); But how do I customize it? Is there any UI delegates that I can override or do I have to implement my own title bar from scratch? I want something like Lawson Smart Office: Or like Trend Micro Internet Security:

  • New Exadata Book Available Soon

    - by Rob Reynolds
Oracle Press is set to released the first book on data warehouse performance and Exadata on March 14th. Achieving Extreme Performance with Oracle Exadata , by my colleagues Rick Greenwald, Robert Stackowiak, Maqsood Alam, and Mans Bhuller will be available at your favorite booksellers next week. I've seen a sneak peak of the content in this book and its a great way to fully grasp the power of Exadata and how to best apply it to achieve extreme data warehouse performance. From the publisher's description: Achieving Extreme Performance with Oracle Exadata and the Sun Oracle Database Machine is filled with best practices for deployments, hardware sizing, architecting the database machine environments for maximum availability, and backup and recovery. Oracle Database 11gR2 features used within these offerings, as well as migration options and paths for Oracle and non-Oracle databases to Oracle Exadata are covered. This Oracle Press guide also discusses architecture, administration, maintenance, monitoring, and tuning of Oracle Exadata Storage Servers and the Sun Oracle Database Machine. If your company is considering Exadata, or if you need more horsepower out of your data warehouse, I highly recommend grabbing a copy of this book next week.

  • KVM swtitch , screen resolution problem

    - by Vagelism
I use the lates ubuntu version. Till to day I use it with an acer trravelmate4070 and an LG screen in order to expand my destkop. Works great. Till today that I desided to connect my LG screen to a KVM switch in order to share the big screen with an other pc when I need it. In the KVM switch the resolution is lower and I can not manually change it. I read many solutions about making an .conf file but since I am new to Ubuntu I am afraid , more over I realized that these articles talk for the same problem but not as an expantion screen but as a main screen. Any idea how to config correct this file? I send the links of these articles here: http://robert.penz.name/219/workarou...-kvm-switches/ Where is the X.org config file? How do I configure X there? • OpenJDK DIO Project Now Live! Java SE Embedded API Accessing Peripherals

    - by hinkmond
The DIO project on OpenJDK is now live! For those who grew up in the 1970's and 1980's, you might remember Ronnie James Dio, lead singer of Black Sabbath after Ozzy was fired, and lead singer of his own band, Dio. Well, this DIO is not that Dio. This DIO is the OpenJDK Device I/O project which provides a Java-level API for accessing generic device peripherals on embedded devices, like your Raspberry Pi running Java SE Embedded software. See: OpenJDK DIO Project Here's a quote: + General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO) + Inter-Integrated Circuit Bus (I2C) + Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) + Serial Peripheral Interface If you're familiar with Pi4J, then you're going to like DIO. And, if you liked Ozzy, you probably liked Ronnie James Dio. This will probably make Robert Savage happy too. The part about DIO being live now, not the part about Dio replacing Ozzy, because everyone likes Ozzy. Hinkmond

  • Morgan Stanley chooses Solaris 11 to run cloud file services

    - by Frederic Pariente
At the EAKC2012 Conference last week in Edinburg, Robert Milkowski, Unix engineer at Morgan Stanley, presented on deploying OpenAFS on Solaris 11. It makes a great proofpoint on how ZFS and DTrace gives a definite advantage to Solaris over Linux to run AFS distributed file system services, the "cloud file system" as it calls it in his blog. Mike used ZFS to achieve a 2-3x compression ratio on data and greatly lower the TCA and TCO of the storage subsystem, and DTrace to root-cause scalability bottlenecks and improve performance. As future ideas, Mike is looking at leveraging more Solaris features like Zones, ZFS Dedup, SSD for ZFS, etc.

  • Books and stories on programming culture, specifically in the 80's / early 90's

    - by Ivo van der Wijk
I've enjoyed a number of (fiction/non-fiction books) about hacker culture and running a software business in the 80's, 90's. For some reason things seemed so much more exciting back then. Examples are: Microserfs (Douglas Coupland) Accidental Empires (Robert X. Cringely Almost Pefect (W.E. Peterson, online!) Coders at Work (Peter Seibel) Today I'm an entrepeneur and programmer. Back in the 80's a I was a young geek hacking DOS TSR's and coding GWBasic / QBasic. In the 90's I was a C.S. university student, experiencing the rise of the Internet world wide. When reading these books running a software business seemed so much more fun than it is nowadays. Things used to be so much simpler, opportunities seemed to be everywhere and the startups seemed to work with much more real problems (inventing spreadsheets, writing word processors in assembly on 6 different platforms) than all our current web 2.0 social networking toys. Does anyone share these feelings? Does anyone have any good (personal) stories from back then or know of other good books to read?

  • South African MVPs deserve their title.

    - by MarkPearl
Recently I read a post by someone who felt the Microsoft MVP program had failed. My local experience with the MVP program would tend for me to disagree. On Saturday I attended a free Windows Phone 7 event organized by Robert MacLean and Rudi Grobler both of whom are local MVP’s. First of all, kudos to them for organizing the event which included a free lunch and flash stick and had some great content for a free event. Secondly, this is not the first time that either of these two MVP’s have organized events. They are active in the community, present at the majority of local events and are always approachable and give an “honest” opinion. For me, that is what an MVP stands for and at least in my region I feel that the MVP program is a real success.

  • Problems using easing equations in C# XNA

    - by codinghands
    I'm having some trouble using the easing equations suggested by Robert Penner for ActionScript (http://www.robertpenner.com/easing/, and a Flash demo here) in my C# XNA game. Firstly, what is the definition of the following variables passed in as arguments to each equation? float t, float b, float c, float d I'm currently calculating the new X position of a sprite in the Update() loop, however even for the linear tween equation I'm getting some odd results. I'm using the following values: float t = gameTime.TotalGameTime.TotalMilliseconds; float d = 8000f; float b = x.Position.X; float c = (ScreenManager.Game.GraphicsDevice.Viewport.Width >> 1) - (x.Position.X + x.frameSize.X / 2); And this equation for linear easing: float val = c*t/d + b;

A piece of advice, if you are searching for a solution to an issue, or a recommendation, or anything else on the web, when you find a post or a forum thread do 2 things.  First, check the date on the post of thread. If it is older it may no longer be fully up to date and or inaccurate. Bear that in mind.  Second, READ THE COMMENTS! Often small omissions or other issues in the post itself are resolved in the comments. If the solution to your issue does not appear to work check the comments.
