  • How long does it take in practice to warm up large in-memory databases?

    Companies such as Peak Hosting are offering 64 core machines with 512Gb RAM for $2K/month. This is a very interesting choice for in-memory databases such as Memcached/Redis as well as databases whose performance degrades rapidly when the data & indexes don't fit in RAM, such as MongoDB. My main concern with monster machines such as these is the time it takes to warm up an in-memory database. In my experience, theoretical metrics, e.g., that SATA can load 100Mb/sec, fall short of what happens in practice. Even at that rate, 100Mb/sec means that loading up 512Gb RAM machine from SATA disks can take over 1 1/2 hours (!). I am looking for real-world reports of warm-up times for machines with very large memory. Please, share details of the software on the machine, data size, storage configuration, e.g., SATA or SSD, network, hosting/cloud provider, if relevant, etc.

  • Easy Threading in WPF

    Hi everyone, I've been reading a lot about threading in C#, WPF and Silverlight but can't get it to work. My main problem is I have the _load (_Initialized) action and it has a lot of object creation and along with that I have timers working doing different things, this causes the startup time of the program to be very slow and obviously causes the UI to hang and it isn't a good thing for deploying to a lot of users. My timers change values of labels and textfields but having them do that on another thread is an obvious no go. So can someone give me some examples on how to achieve what I need to do? Thanks

The problem in Internet Explorer 7. The option is included, but the expected display is '----category'. But Internet Explorer 7 displays only category in options. Since I am using tree order I need to have hyphens before some category. How can I solve it in Internet Explorer 7?

    I am trying to send a multi part formdata post through my java code. Can someone tell me how to set Content Length in the following?? There seem to be headers involved when we use InputStreamBody which implements the ContentDescriptor interface. Doing a getContentLength on the InputStreamBody gives me -1 after i add the content. I subclassed it to give contentLength the length of my byte array but am not sure if other headers required by ContentDescriptor will be set for a proper POST. I am able to see the selected border style in designer. Like None, FixedSingle or Fixed3D. But when I set the border style to FixedSingle, the border does not appear at runtime.
