  • Editing Data in Child Window with RIA Services and Silverlight 4

    Is it possible to edit data in a SilverLight Child window when using RIA Services and Silverlight 4? It sounds like a simple enough question, but I have not been able to get any combination of scenarios to work. Simply put, I am viewing data in a grid that was populated through a DomainDataSource. Instead of editing the data on the same screen (this is the pattern that ALL of the Microsoft samples seem to use), I want to open a child window, edit the data and return. Surely this is a common design pattern. If anyone knows of a sample out there that uses this pattern, a link would be much appreciated. Thanks, Rick Arthur

  • Problem with TcpListener on Silverlight application

    I am writing silverlight 3 application wich si working on network. It works like client-server application. There is WinForm application for server and silverlight application for client. I use TcpListener on server and connect from client to it with Socet. In local network it works fine, but when I try to use it from internet it don't connect to server. I use IP address on local network and real IP with port number for internet version. Where is the problem? Thanks.

    Blend 4 is telling me this is invalid markup and its not telling me why: <ImageBrush Stretch="Fill" ImageSource="{Binding Avatar, Mode=OneWay}"/> I'm pulling data from a Twitter feed, saving to an ImageSource, and then binding it to an ImageBrush(as seen below) to be used as the Fill for a Rectangle. Everything is working but I need some assistance. I would like some advice on how to redirect the user to page they came from before they were pushed to the Login page.     Hi, I have converted an Entity framework project to use POCO objects by removing the entity data model and the domain service and meta data classes. My silverlight project works as it is showing a datagrid of Employee objects. I have not added a DataForm and when I modify the "name" property of one of my Employee objects, I get the error: This EntitySet of type 'TestEmployeesApp.Web.Employee' does not support the 'Edit' operation. The error occurs on validatingProperty() on the class Entity on the client side. I checked the metadata on the server side, and all my properties have the attribute Editable(true). I am using Silverlight 3 with VS2008. JD

    Trying to do basic webclient data pull in C#, and the methods are not available in visualstudio, and the code is not compiling. //snip WebClient client = new WebClient(); byte[] resp = client.DownloadData(url); //snip Error 1 'System.Net.WebClient' does not contain a definition for 'DownloadData' and no extension method 'DownloadData' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Net.WebClient' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) C:\Users\Michael\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\search2\search2\MainPage.xaml.cs I'm doing this in a c# file for a XAML/Silverlight project, but can't imagine why that would make a difference. I can not find any reference to this issue on the web, and I had something similar to this working last month, but in a regular ASP.NET page, not in a Silverlight app.

  • Silverlight tests not working unless RDP connection open

    I have a few Silverlight UI tests that I'm automating with White. These tests are subsequently run by a TFS build agent, which is running interactively so it can access the desktop. The build passes if I have a Remote Desktop connection open to the build agent as the tests are run; I can see the mouse pointer moving around. When the test clicks on a HyperlinkButton navigation takes place, and is subsequently verified by assertions within the test. The build fails if I do not have a Remote Desktop connection open to the build agent as the tests are run. The Internet Explorer window is created and the Silverlight app loads, but no clicks happen; the application remains on the initial page and test assertions subsequently fail. Has anyone out there found a solution to this problem?

    Hey, I've been building a silverlight application and a WCF service for a while now and recently tried to host them in IIS7. I installed IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and added these two application to my default website. I am having a number of problems so im hoping one of you can help out... 1) The silverlight and WCF service applications do not work with pass-through authentication. I need to "connect as" the administrator server account when setting up the application. I read online that you should only need to use the "connect as" field when you are connecting to another computer. If i dont supply the admin credentials i get this error. Do i have to set up permissions somewhere else? HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid.   • Disabling Button with custom Content in Silverlight?

    Hi there, What is the easiest way to create a Silverlight Button with custom Content which knows how to 'look' disabled? I.e. if you set IsEnabled="False" it will look greyed out. The custom Content will be dead simple, text and an image. I have done this before in a WPF application quite easily by setting the Content to a StackPanel containing a TextBlock and an Image. I then implemented a Style Trigger on the Image to change it to a greyed out version when it wasn't enabled. The text changed colour by itself. As far as I can tell the custom Content disappears altogether when the button is disabled in Silverlight. Any help is appreciated. Cheers, Andrej.

  • Silverlight WCF service acting strange

    Hi I have a silverlight project that calls into a wcf service. Everything works fine on my local machine. However when I deploy to a virtual machine, with the exact same query the wcf service returns, but the result is empty. I've tried debugging, but have not been able to get it to break in the wcf service. Any ideas what the problem could be, or how I could go about debugging it? Thanks I figured out what the problem is, but am not sure what the solution is. In my silverlight project the wcf service I am referencing is http://localhost/.../SilverlightApiService.svc I used fiddler on my vm to see the request that was made and instead of trying to contact the above service, it was trying to contact: http:///.../SilverlightApiService.svc So, for some reason my machine name is getting inserted in there instead of localhost. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

    Hi all I have created my first silverlight app :-) It has a basic page and connects to a db to populate a list. the connection is done using wcf, so my silverlight connects to a ServiceReference that does the stuff. This all works fine when i run from VisualStudio. My problem is that i am not sure how to host this app. I created an account on aspspider uploaded my default.html, zap file(which i renamed to zip), and Database. this work fine until it needs to connect to the db. What do i need to upload to get the database connection working ? Thanks :-) Martin

  • Looking for efficient scaling patterns for Silverlight application with distributed text-file data s

    I'm designing a Silverlight software solution for students and teachers to record flashcards, e.g. words and phrases that students find while reading and errors that teachers notice while teaching. Requirements are: each person publishes his own flashcards in a file on a web server, e.g. http://:www.mywebserver.com/flashcards.txt other people subscribe to that person's flashcards by using a Silverlight flashcard reader that I have developed and entering the URLs of flashcard files they want to subscribe to, URLs and imported flashcards being saved in IsolatedStorage the flashcards.txt file has the following simple format: title, then blocks of question/answers: Jim Smith's flashcards from English class 53-222, winter semester 2009 ==fla Das kann nicht sein. That can't be. ==fla Es sei denn, er kommt nicht. Unless he doesn't come. The user then makes public the URL to his flashcard file and other readers begin reading in his flashcards. In order to lower the bar for non-technical users to contribute, it will even be possible for them to save this text in a Google Document, which they publish and distribute the URL. The flashcard readers will then recognize it is a google document and perform the necessary screen scraping to get at the raw text. I have two technical questions about this approach: What is a best way to plan now for scalability issues: e.g. if your reader is subscribed to 10 flashcard files that are each 200K, it will have to download 2MB of text just to find out if any new flashcards are available. Or can I somehow accurately and consistently get at the last update date/time of text files on servers and published google docs? Each reader will have the ability to allow the person to test himself on imported flashcards and add meta information to them, e.g. categorize them, edit them, etc. This information will be stored in IsolatedStorage along with the important flashcards themselves. What is a good pattern to allow these readers to share and synchronize this meta data, e.g. so when you are looking at a flashcard you can see that 5 other people have made corrections to it. The best solution I can think of now is that the Silverlight readers will have to republish their data to a central database, but then there is the problem of uniquely identifying each flashcard, the best approach seems to be URL + position-in-file, or even better URL + original text of both question and answer fields, but both of these have their obvious drawbacks. The main requirement is that the bar for participation is kept as low as possible, i.e. type text in a google document, publish it, distribute the URL, and you're publishing within the flashcard community. So I want to come up with the most efficient technical solutions in order to compensate for the lack of database, lack of unique ids, etc. For those who have designed or developed similar non-traditional, distributed database projects like this, what advice, experience or best-practice tips you can share on the above two points?

    Hello.. I am very new to Silverlight development. I understand that this is client side technology therefore the paradyme is differant from that of conventional ASP.NET development. Having said that, I don't understand where my server side code is deployed. I have a silver light \ MVC application. I am trying to read an XML document from within my 'Models' folder. The following peice of code is executed from within a class that is in the same location as the XML document, 'Models'. The load() results in a SystemIOFileNotFound exception. I noticed that when building the application the XML document is not laid down in the same location as the web project's assembly. I assume this is specific to the fact that this is a Silverlight project. I saw that there is a way to play a WAV file on Silverlight (here), but when i tried to impliment it, i got an error playing the file because it is not in PCM format but encoded. The files that i'm trying to play are encoded with a special encoder, so i thought that the only way is to decode the WAV file on the server and stream it back to the client. The limitation is that the decode process should occur in real time because it is not reasonable to convert all the WAV files that exists. Is it possible to do it? Which streamer can i use? (Windows Media Service can help here?) Does somebody has any experience with such a scenario? Appreciate your help.

    In a Silverlight 4 project I have a class that extends Canvas: public class AppendageCanvas : Canvas { public float Friction { get; set; } public float Restitution { get; set; } public float Density { get; set; } } I use this canvas in Blend by dragging it onto another control and setting the custom properties: When I run the app, I get the following error when InitializeComponent is called on the control containing my custom canvas: I'm not sure why Silverlight isn't able to convert this property from it's string representation in Xaml, to the float that it is. Anyone have any ideas?

    When I see the call System.Windows.Browser.HtmlPage.Window.Eval (which is evil) in ReportErrorToDOM (in App.xaml.cs) this shows me that it has no relationship to onSilverlightError. So what kind of JavaScript-based scenario calls onSilverlightError? When will onSilverlightError definitely be needed? What are Silverlight error-handling conventions in general? This is a very important comment by Erik Monk but needs more detail: There are 2 kinds of terminal errors in Silverlight. 1) Managed errors (hit the managed Application_UnhandledException method). Note that some errors may not even get to this point. If the managed infrastructure can't be loaded for some reason (out of memory error maybe...), you won't get this kind of error. Still, if you can get it, you can use a web service (or the CLOG project) to communicate it back to the server. 2) Javascript errors.
