• Looking for Firebird GUI

  I use phpMyAdmin to manage all of my MySQL databases and SQL Management Studio Express to manage my MS SQL databases. Now I need to start working with Firebird, and I'm looking for a tool along the lines of SQL Management Studio to manage those databases as well. I can be flexible with the UI and can learn a new system, so if there's something freely available that will do the trick but isn't quite the same as SQL management Studio I think I could adapt. Bottom line: What free tools are available that provide an in-depth GUI for Firebird?

• Tool to convert a series of image into a single sprite sheet

  Are there any known tools that can take a serie of pictures and generate a single sprite sheet from them? (ie. place all the images into a single image, one after the other). I have found some very basic software doing this, but I am looking for one that is able to detect duplicate frames as well as outputting some kind of data structure that allow me to programatically retrieve the coordinate of each frame on the generated image. I need this to convert existing animations with many duplicate frames and I am a bit surprised that there is no standard software to do this, as most infos you can find on the web about this is people doing this completely manually.. Any recommendations?

• There is a commercial tool like Xen + Remus?

  Hello, I have a project where we need a completely redundant system like the one offered by Remus with a Xen virtualization system. I wondered if there is a system like this one built by VMWare or some other company because the project is a very critical one and we do not want to have to wait that a bug is fixed by "the community" and money is not a problem. What Remus does is to build a completely redundant system where you can shutdown one machine and the other continues the work where the other left it maintaining the network connections opened, etc Any hint? • Looking for WYSIWYG tool to create and edit HTML5 based presentations (slides)

  There are a lot of different implementations for HTML5 based slide presentations out there, like Google Slides or S5. But all that I have seen so far, seem to need a person being able to (and willing to) read and write HTML-Code. My company still uses Powerpoint, but some people are quite unhappy about its limitedness, e.g. the lack of possibilites to embed animation (other than just appear/disappear) without using flash. I'd love to suggest a state-of-the-art solution based on HTML5, but I don't even need to think about suggesting a solution where the project people need a techie to add or edit the content of a slide. I am not looking for an editor for non-technies to create complex HTML5/javascript based animations, of course, those should be done by a developer... basically non-technies should be capable of doing the stuff they are doing in powerpoint now. • Is Zabbix the right tool for me?

  I just want to monitor a small handful of servers (less than 10). From reading various places it sounds like the top leading contenders (for open source at least) are: nagios munin zabbix From what I have read a lot of people tend to use munin and nagios together -- munin for history and graphs, and nagios for alerting. On the other hand it sounds like Zabbix is a more complete solution and easier to configure than either of the other two. So I was thinking of going that route. My thoughts right now are: What are the general disadvantages of Zabbix? Does Zabbix have a small footprint on boxes it is monitoring? Do I really need to setup an entire other server for it? I currently have a server that is under very light load -- can I dual purpose it?

• Tool to test USB sticks?

  Some of the files I copy to a USB stick seems to be corrupted? Maybe the stick is bad but I haven't used it much and want to know for sure. Is there a Windows utility to test the stick? Mark bad areas as bad so the file system doesn't save to them? I format before I copy but I still get corrupted files? Does chkdsk work on USB sticks reliably?

• Decent bookmark manager/tool for Firefox.

  The built in bookmarks UX for Firefox is dismall. How do I bookmark a page without opening the whole shebang and shoosing a bookmark folder? I can simply 'star' the page, but then it ends up in Unsorted Bookmarks. I can move a bookmark folder to the bookmark toolbar, where I have instant access to all bookmarks in that folder, but I can no longer bookmark a page in that folder in the normal way, because when I have to click the damned bookmark folder icon and manually type in the URL and title. What add-ins are there that can make bookmarking in Firefox humanly sane?

I'll often care that the files are functionally the same, but diff by itself, would be annoying to use, especially if the XML file doesn't have a lot of linebreaks.   I am looking for a (Windows XP) utility (preferably a standalone app) that can let me set a hotkey to adjust the gamma (and hopefully other color settings) of the overlay surface. ATI Tray Tools does not have the ability to bind the overlay color adjustments to the overlay. I’ve asked him about it and he said it was difficult to implement or something (he was kind of vague). The ATI Catalyst drivers do not have a hotkey function for the overlay tab either. Can anyone help?

  hi. im looking for a small utility that can copy files over to/from remote windows hosts, and which can take the credentials (domain user and password) as part of its command line, similar to psexec. i know i can use net use to map the target directory to a drive letter and use xcopy, and i know psexec can upload files to be executed on the remote machine and then delete them, but im looking for a small utility to distribute files to remote hosts that will not be as awkward to use as net use + xcopy

  I'm in the process of deploying a bunch of Win2K8R2 VMs via vSphere's deployment template stuff, and in the deploy specification it allows you to punch a list of commands to run. Aside from activating Windows (which it doesn't do), it works pretty well. Does anyone know the command-line equivalent of going into a network adapter's properties and unchecking the IPv6 box? If I had that I could put that in the spec and not have to manually uncheck the IPv6 box.

• Hardware testing tool/suite

  Hi All, I just bought a new core i5 system (assembled) and started installing Windows 7. It was failing for many times and at some point got installed. After that, frequent crashes related to MEMORY. So checked the RAM using memtest86+ and found many errors.I got it replaced with the vendor and now if i install ANY OS, at some point in installation it either freezes completely with no response for hours, or restarts automatically. I tried installing Windows 7, Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.10. I tested the new RAM again and found no problems in about 2 passes using memtest86+. I even updated the BIOS using bootable USB and even the problem persists. I am really not sure which hardware is causing trouble. I dont have any OS inside it, so i have to check using bootable CDs DVDs and USB only. Please advice on how to proceed. Are there any suites/ separate tools for checking integrity of each hardware parts and troubleshoot it? I wanted to confirm which part is problematic before going for replacement. Thanks a lot! • Synchronizing the SamAccountName Property using Windows Azure Active Directory Sync Tool

  Using this official documentation as a guide, I would expect the SamAccountName property to sync from my on-premise AD to Office 365. I think that it used to do exactly that, but now it seems that it doesn't so much sync the attribute as it does create an entirely new, unlinked value and store it in Office 365. This has caused some minor issues for me (broken scripts, annoying permissions management, etc.) and may be part of a more major issue regarding ADFS authentication. On-Premise PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-ADUser jdoe -Properties SamAccountName | fl SamAccountName SamAccountName : jdoe Office 365 Sync'ed Objects PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-Mailbox jdoe | fl SamAccountName SamAccountName : $1A7H20-K1LCOJFFBHGS I understand how to work around this issue in my scripts -- there exists the ImmutableId property which can be mapped back to the on-premise GUID. As far as the issue I'm having with ADFS, I'm less certain how to proceed and if this is causing my issues. At this point I really would just like some verification that I'm not crazy and that this used to be sync'ed at some point in the past and that Office 365 broke it relatively recently. I also think that MS documentation should perhaps be updated to exclude SamAccountName from the list of synchronized properties on the page I linked.

• Raid-3 like software backup tool

  I have a lot of data (about 7 TB), stored across multiple hard-drives with varying sizes. I would like to have a backup of that data to be safe against drive failure. A RAID is not a good option for me, as I want to keep my cost low and be able to easily extend the storage capacity of my setup by buying an additional HD. I remember seeing a piece of software that generates parity data over all drives and stores that on an extra drive. That solution protects the setup from hard drive failure and works with varying drive sizes (as long as the parity drive is the biggest one). But I can’t seem to find that software again. Does anybody now what I’m talking about or have any other solution for my situation?

• Tool to allow Kerberos Authenticated users to modify Firewall settings

  I run a firewall on a central router. Recently, several users want to use Skype. Since firewalling Skype virtually means to switch the firewall off, I consider to allow users to temporarily punch holes for their system. Since the users have no accounts on the router, I consider using Kerberos for authentication and authorization. The router is a Debian Squeeze box, with minimal configuration, i.e. no web-server, database or similar gimmicks. Does anyone know an existing solution, which could be used for that purpose? Or does anybody know easy to use and well documented frameworks in say Perl, Python, C, C++, ... making the set-up of a Kerberos authenticated Client and Server application really simple?

• Problems installing W2K8 SP2

  Hello - We are having difficulty installing SP2 on a W2K8 SP1 x64 server. When we try to do this through Windows Updates, it runs for about 1 minute and then says that it completed successfully (when clearly it did not). When we run the file manually via the download, the install fails with the following error code: 0x800f0823 I have tried running the System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821), but that did not work. Additional info about the server: It is a domain controller, also running MS-Exchange 2007 SP1 (v8.01.0336.000). Any assistance that could be provided would be greatly appreciated. In you need any more info about the server, please let me know! Thanks!

• Best tool for writing a Programming Book?

  Well, this is not directly programming related! But a friend of mine wants to write a book about programming. Now he asked me if I knew a good software for this, because Word crashes 10 times a day on his machine, and OpenOffice is just very chunky and slow. Also none of them seem to have any useful support for including Code Listings (examples) with useful syntax highlighting or at least some sort of support for inserting code (i.e. indicating line breaks with arrows that turn around, line numbers, etc). Latex is out of question since it's incredible hard to use and has no really useful feature for including tables. It's a mess. Maybe some IT authors are here who can give some hints what tools they use. That would be great!
