• How do you scale a pictureLink object in Excel 2010

- by vzczc
In Excel 2007 it is possible to scale a pictureLink object (created with the Camera Tool) using the following VBA code. With ActiveWorkbook.Sheets(sht).Pictures(name) .ShapeRange.ScaleWidth scaleValue, msoTrue .ShapeRange.ScaleHeight scaleValue, msoTrue .top = top .left = left End With This code places the picture correctly in 2010, but the scaleValue is ignored. The 2010 Excel documentation is patchy on this subject. The same code works fine in Excel 2007.

• Experience with Coderush XPress and Visual Studio 2010?

- by HumerGu
It is possible to use CRX with VS 2010: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1441554/can-i-use-coderush-xpress-in-visual-studio-2010 Refactor Key works. (After assigning the shortcut) What doesn't work is QuickNav and QuickFileNav. The Standard Shourtcut for QuickFileNav is CTRL+ALT+F, which is conflicted with VS View.F#Interactive. But removing this shortcut or changing the shortcuts for QuickNav and QuickFileNav doesn't bring up the nav-windows. NextReference (TABULATOR) doesn't work Any solutions? Other issues?

• Ctrl-Backspace Visual Studio 2010

- by Chris Watts
I recently upgraded to Visual Studio 2010 and found out that when i press Ctrl-Backspace on a empty line it will delete the line, which is what it did in 2008, but then it will also delete the last character on the line above. I have tried to see if there is any settings anywhere but i cant seem to find any. Does anyone know if you can change this or did they make it default in 2010 Im using C#, if that makes a difference.

• Setup Project in Visual Studio 2010 Requires .NET 4.0

- by Filip Ekberg
When setting up a Setup Project in Visual Studio 2010 and even to I removing all the prerequistes .NET 4.0 is still required on the computer that runs the Installation. Deploying with ClickOnce works but is not an option, but at least it doesn't ask for .NET 4.0. Is there a way to create a Setup Project in Visual Studio 2010 that doesn't require .NET 4.0 on installation? Edit This is one of the test configurations i've tested And this is what it looks like when I run setup.exe or the .msi

• Will Visual Studio 2010 democratize UML ?

- by asksuperuser
I've been very upset these past years with all the UML tools (especially the clunky mammoth Rational Rose from IBM which I really hated each time a client asked to use it). I think UML did suffer from bad integration. I rarely used UML myself because of lack of productivity. So I had a positive surprise with Visual Studio 2010 especially the sequence diagram reversing tool which really helps understand code. For people who had tried VS 2010 Ultimate do you think the same ?

• Which VS 2010 version to get?

- by Prabhu
I want to download VS 2010 Ultimate through my MSDN licence, but I don't see one for the 64-bit. There's Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 (x86 and x64) - DVD (English), but is that just the server or can I use it for dev too?

• Word 2007 Documents in Visual Studio 2010

- by Will Eddins
I'm currently using Visual Studio 2010 Professional, and noticed the ability to create Word 2007 and Word 2010 documents with C# code-behinds. What I'm looking to do is fill in a report-type document with information in my C# application, and then output the final .docx. Is this possible using this feature, and how do I go about doing it?

• ETA on Smart Device Projects for Visual Studio 2010

- by Vaccano
I really want to upgrade to Visual Studio 2010. But since I do a lot of development for the Pocket PC version of Windows Mobile I cannot. (I develop for a Symbol device that does not support Windows Phone 7, so that is not a option.) Does any one know any kind of time frame of when Microsoft plans to add support for Smart Device Projects into Visual Studio 2010

• Visual Studio 2010 Architecture tooling

- by Tone
Has anyone played around with the architecture tools (uml diagrams, etc) in VS 2010 and if so what is your opinion? I really am liking Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect but am also curious about what is available in VS 2010. I'm not looking for responses about how much you hate Microsoft tools or love mircosoft tools, but more for answers about how useful VS2010 arc tools are for you.

• VS 2010 IDE 2GB limt

- by user561732
I am using VS 2010 on a win 7 64 bit system with 8 GB of memory. My application is 32 bit. While in the VS 2010 .Net IDE, the app shows up in the Windows task manager as "MyApp.vshost.exe *32" while the VS IDE itself shows up as "devenv.exe *32". I checked and it appears that the VS 2010 IDE file (devenv.exe) is complied with the /LargeAddressAware flag. However, when debugging large models, the IDE fails with an Out of memory exception. In the Windows Task manager, the "MyApp.vshost.exe *32" process indicates about 1400 MB of memory usage (while the "devenv.exe *32" process is well under 500 MB). Is it possible to set the "MyApp.vshost.exe *32" process to be /LargeAddressAware in order to avoid this out of memory situation? If so, how can this be done in the IDE. While setting the final application binary to be /LargeAddressAware would work, I still need to be able to debug the app in the IDE with these type of large models. I should also note that my app has a deep object hierarchy with many collections that together required a lot of memory. However, my issue is not related to trying to create say 1 large array that requires greater then 2 GB of memory etc. I should note that I am able to run the same app in the VB6 IDE and not get an out of memory situation as long as the VB6 IDE is made /LargeAddressAware. In the case of VB6, the IDE and the app being debugged are part of the same process (and not split into 2 as is the case with VS 2010.) The VB6 process can be larger then 3 GB without running into out of memory issues. Ultimately, my objective is to have my app run completely in 64 bit to access more memory. I am hoping that in such cases, the IDE will allow the debugging process to exceed 2 GB without crashing (and certainly more then 1.4 GB as is the current case). However, for now, while 95% of my app is 64 bit, I am calling a legacy COM 32 bit DLL and as such, my entire app is forced to still run in 32 bit mode until I replace that DLL.

• Scrum for Team Foundation Server 2010

- by Martin Hinshelwood
I will be presenting a session on “Scrum for TFS2010” not once, but twice! If you are going to be at the Aberdeen Partner Group meeting on 27th April, or DDD Scotland on 8th May then you may be able to catch my session. Credit: I want to give special thanks to Aaron Bjork from Microsoft who provided me with most of my material He is a Scrum and Power Point genius. Updated 9th May 2010 – I have now presented at both of these sessions and posted about it. Scrum for Team Foundation Server 2010 Synopsis Visual Studio ALM (formerly Visual Studio Team System (VSTS)) and Team Foundation Server (TFS) are the cornerstones of development on the Microsoft .NET platform. These are the best tools for a team to have successful projects and for the developers to have a focused and smooth software development process. For TFS 2010 Microsoft is heavily investing in Scrum and has already started moving some teams across to using it. Martin will not be going in depth with Scrum but you can find out more about Scrum by reading the Scrum Guide and you can even asses your Scrum knowledge by having a go at the Scrum Open Assessment. You can also read SSW’s Rules to Better Scrum using TFS which have been developed during our own Scrum implementations. Come and see Martin Hinshelwood, Visual Studio ALM MVP and Solution Architect from SSW show you: How to successfully gather requirements with User stories How to plan a project using TFS 2010 and Scrum How to work with a product backlog in TFS 2010 The right way to plan a sprint with TFS 2010 Tracking your progress The right way to use work items What you can use from the built in reporting as well as the Project portals available on from the SharePoint dashboard The important reports to give your Product Owner / Project Manager Walk away knowing how to see the project health and progress. Visual Studio ALM is designed to help address many of these traditional problems faced by teams. It does so by providing a set of integrated tools to help teams improve their software development activities and to help managers better support the software development processes. During this session we will cover the lifecycle of creating work items and how this fits into Scrum using Visual Studio ALM and Team Foundation Server. If you want to know more about how to do Scrum with TFS then there is a new course that has been created in collaboration with Microsoft and Scrum.org that is going to be the official course for working with TFS 2010. SSW has Professional Scrum Developer Trainers who specialise in training your developers in implementing Scrum with Microsoft's Visual Studio ALM tools. • How to access HTML elements from server side code in an asp.net website

- by nikolaosk
In this post I will demonstrate with a hands on example how HTML elements in an .aspx page can be processed exactly like standard ASP.Net server controls. Basically how to make them accessible from server side code. 1) Launch Visual Studio 2010/2008/2005. (express editions will work fine). Create a new empty website and choose a suitable name for it. Choose VB as the development language. 2) Add a new item in your site, a web form. Leave the default name. 3) Let's say that we want to change the background...(read more)

• Join the Dark Side of Visual Studio 2010

- by InfinitiesLoop
Hard to believe it’s been so long, but it was almost 4 years ago when I published Join the Dark Side of Visual Studio . That was when a lot of people were still using VS2003, and importing and exporting environment settings required a custom add-in, VSStyler, which has since fallen off the planet and is hard to find (link, anyone? Let me know). Three versions of VS later, and I’m still using and loving the dark side. Pleased, I am (haha). In fact, that article for one reason or another is still one...(read more)

• Creating a simple RSS reader using ListView,XMLDatasource,DataPager web server controls

- by nikolaosk
In my last ASP.Net seminar someone noticed that we did not talk at all about the XmlDataSource,ListView,DataPager web server controls. It is rather impossible to investigate/talk about all issues regarding ASP.Net in a seminar but I promised to write a blog post. I thought that I could combine all those three web server controls to create a RSS reader. 1) Launch Visual Studio 2008/2010. Express editions will work fine. 2) Create an empty asp.net web site. Choose an appropriate name. We will not write...(read more)

• Launch 2010 Technical Readiness Unofficial Q&A.

- by mbcrump
I had an email from one of my readers about the 2010 Technical Readiness Series. Please read below: Hi Michael, I noticed you blogged a while back that you were going to attend MS 2010 Launch event. I’m going to the session in Seattle on May 27, is it worth it to attend? Also, I’m wondering if they give any free software away like VS2010 Pro? Any decent vendors? Looking forward to hearing back from you. I decided this information would probably benefit several instead of just responding back to the reader. In case you are not aware, MS has a 2010 launch event showing VS2010, Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008R2. You can sign up for an event here: https://microsoft.crgevents.com/Register2010/Content/Event_Selection.aspx I’ve answered the questions asked below. Q: Is it worth going? A: It is if you have had little or no exposure to the latest 2010 products. Most people are familiar with VS2010, but have not seen SharePoint 2010 Office 2010 or Windows Phone 7. It is designed to get you up to speed very quickly. If you have watched most of the MIX videos and keep up with .NET in general, you will benefit more by having the ability to ask questions. Q: Did you get any free software? A: No, only demos including: VS2010/Office 2010 – They give you a link to the url where you can download the trial version. Windows 7 Enterprise – You get a DVD with the trial version loaded. Q: Do they give away any cool swag? A: Just a Microsoft T-Shirt (XL). Q: What about the vendor selection? A: At the event that I went to, most vendors were pushing SharePoint products. There wasn’t a lot of variety in the selection. Most vendors were giving away the typical pens, buttons and stickers and trial software. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me. I will answer and add to this un-official FAQ.

• Can I use the Office 2007 Proofing Tools with Office 2010 RTM?

- by Martin Wiboe
Hi, I have just downloaded and installed Office 2010 RTM. Overall, it is very nice, but I miss having proofing tools available for my native language, Danish. I have installed the 2007 Proofing Tools, but they do not work with 2010: For this release we have made significant changes in the proofing infrastructure, therefore the Language Packs from previous Office versions including Office 2007 are not compatible with Office 2010. (http://blogs.msdn.com/naturallanguage/archive/2009/07/16/proofing-tools-in-office-2010.aspx) Does anyone know a workaround until the 2010 Proofing Tools are released? Thank you, Martin
