  • How to speed up 'cold start' of .NET component called from VB6 app

    I have a VB6 app which brings up a form by invoking a .NET DLL, but the problem is that this form takes almost 5 seconds to appear after a menu item in the VB6 app is selected. How can I speed this up? I'm thinking that one possible solution is to load the Form from the .NET DLL during the splash screen of the VB6 app but make invisible or somehow not show it, and then when the menu item is selected I will make it show or visible. What are my options?

I'm near about 1.8 megs of text (which I found via firebug), it seems as the writing is taking more time than the script to run.. is there a way to increase this write speed? Thank you in advance.

    I'm working on some image manipulation code in c# and need to do some matrix operations (specifically 2D convolution). I have the code written in matlab which uses the conv2 function ... is there a library for C# / .NET that does good high-speed matrix manipulations? I'd be fine if it requires some specific GPU and does the matrix math on-GPU if that's what it takes.

    I noticed that Kohana 3 ORM runs a "SHOW FULL COLUMNS" for each of my models when I start using them: SHOW FULL COLUMNS FROM `mytable` This query might take a few clock cycles to execute (in the Kohana profiler it's actually the slowest of all queries ran in my current app). Is there a way to help Kohana 3 ORM to speed up by disabling this behaviour and explicitly define the columns in my models instead?

What I intend to do is to hook to some system api,like a time interrupt happens every amount of time (which is how every application in the operating system interprets time) and make an application's call to this api return some bigger/smaller result. So from the point view of an applicaiton, time has been speed up or slow down.     Assume an office of people, they want to limit HTTP downloads to a max of 40% bandwidth of their internet connection speed so that it doesn't block other traffic. We say "it's not supported in your firewall", and they say the inevitable line "we used to be able to do it with our Netgear/DLink/DrayTek". Thinking about it, a download is like this: HTTP GET request Server sends file data as TCP packets Client acknowledges receipt of TCP packets Repeat until download finished. The speed is determined by how fast the server sends data to you, and how fast you acknowledge it. So, to limit download speed, you have two choices: 1) Instruct the server to send data to you more slowly - and I don't think there's any protocol feature to request that in TCP or HTTP. 2) Acknowledge packets more slowly by limiting your upload speed, and also ruin your upload speed. How do devices do this limiting? Is there a standard way?

  • Can I increase the link speed of the RAS Server on our MS Win2k3 box?

    We are running a Win2K3 Server box, and I'm a remote employee that connects via VPN. I've been frustrated for some time by the connection speed over the VPN (the office HQ has a decent speed and I have a biz class connection here), and decided to do some checking today. This morning, I was dialed in and looked at the networking tab of the task manager, and I see that the adapter for the RAS Server (the box has 4 Gigabit adapters) has a speed that seems far too low. The speed for the RAS Server link hovers between 300 - 600 Kbps. The local connection (and others) all say 1 Gbps. Can I set this to a higher speed? Is this information accurate?     OK, so this is really weird. I ran HDTune on a newly set-up home-built computer and got the following readings from my drives in mid-November. SSD 154 MB/s RAID1 87 RAID0 198 (software installs) RAID0 98 Swap drive Today, in January, I run HDTune (same version) and get these results, in MB/s: SSD 186 RAID1 98 RAID0 241 RAID0 98 (Swap drive) Here are more details that HDTune reports on the SSD drive: HD Tune: OCZ-VERTEX Benchmark Blockquote Transfer Rate Minimum : 135.4 MB/sec Transfer Rate Maximum : 219.4 MB/sec Transfer Rate Average : 185.7 MB/sec Access Time : 0.1 ms Burst Rate : 187.3 MB/sec CPU Usage : -1.0% To get to my question: Why are my hard drives improving in performance? Most of my logical drives are in some form of RAID, except for the SSD. Will this performance ever deteriorate? Note, none of my drives are a hybrid drive that uses some form of SSD to enhance the write/reads on actual platters.
