• Moving from Silverlight 4 Beta to RC - Part 2

  In my previous post I talked about updating my development environment from Silverlight 4 Beta to Silverlight 4 RC (release candidate). After updating, I opened the solution for my Task-It project and found that several things were broken. I would've been surprised if it just worked as is! What disappointed me is that after spending a decent amount of time searching the web, I could not find information telling me what I needed to update/change...and wouldn't it be nice if there was a wizard to update it for you? What changed? I wish I had made notes along the line of each of the things I found, but here are a few that I can recall: In the Web project, the following dll's no longer exist: System.Web.DomainServices.dll System.Web.DomainServices.LinqToSql.dll (if you are using the Entity Framework I believe that one is System.Web.DomainServices.EntityFramework.dll) System.Web.Ria.dll In the Silverlight project: System.Windows.Ria.dll I'm not positive which new assemblies need to be referenced for your project, but I'm going to list the ones I think you need. One way to verify is to create a new Silverlight application with support for WCF RIA Services and see which dlls are included. In the Web project: System.Data.Entity.dll System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.EntityFramework.dll (I've moved from LinqToSql to EntityFramework, so I'm not sure which one the LinqToSql stuff comes from) System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Hosting.dll System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Server.dll In the Silverlight project: System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.dll System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.Web.dll System.ServiceModel.Web.Extensions.dll Where are these dll's? These all live in either the Silverlight or RIA Services subdirectories under:         C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs Of if you are on a 64-bit machine like me:         C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs Wrap up Good luck, and I hope this helps to get you back in business! • Shared Folders in VirtualBox on Windows 7

  In my adventures with VirtualBox, my latest victory was in figuring out how to share folders between my host OS (Windows 7) and my virtual OS (Windows Server 2008).  Im familiar with VirtualPC and other such products, which allow you to share local folders with the VM.  When you do, they just show up in Windows Explorer and all is good.  However, after configuring shared folders in VirtualBox like so:   I couldnt see them anywhere within the machine. Where are Shared Folders in a VirtualBox VM? Fortunately a bit of searching yielded this article, which describes the problem nicely.  It turns out that there is a magic word you have to know, and that is the share name for the host OS: \\vboxsrv Once you know this, mapping shared folders is straightforward.  From Windows Explorer, click on the Map network drive option, and then map a drive to \\vboxsrv\YOURSHAREDFOLDER Like so: With that, its easy to share folders between the client and host OS using VirtualBox.  The reason I didnt simply use a standard network share to my host OS machine name is that both guest and host are in a VPN, and the VPN is over the Internet and in a different country, so when I went that route my files were (apparently) traveling from host to guest by way of the remote VPN network, rather than locally.  Using the Shared Folders feature dramatically sped up my ability to transfer files between Host and Guest machines. • Sql Server Prevent Saving Changes That Require Table to be Re-created

  When working with SQL Server Management studio, if you use the Design view of a table and attempt to make a change that will require the table to be dropped and re-added, you may receive an error message like this one: Saving changes is not permitted.  The changes you have made require the following tables to be dropped and re-created.  You have either made changes to a table that cant be re-created or enabled the option Prevent saving changes that require the table to be re-created. In truth, its quite likely that you didnt enable such an option, despite the error dialogs accusations, as it is enabled by default when you install SQL Management Studio.  You can learn more about the issue in the KB article, Error message when you try to save a table in SQL Server 2008: Saving changes is not permitted. Warning: As the above article states, it is not recommended that you turn off this option (at least not permanently), as it will ensure that you do not accidentally change the schema of a table such that data is lost.  Do so at your peril. The simplest way to bypass this error is to go into Option Designers and uncheck the option Prevent saving changes that require table re-creation.  See the screenshot below. The main reason why you will see this error is if you attempted to do any of the following to the table whose design you are saving: Change the Allow Nulls setting for a column Reorder columns Change any columns data type Add a new column The recommended workaround is to script out the changes to a SQL file and execute them by hand, or to simply write out your own T-SQL to make the changes. • Why does the MaxReceiveMessageSize in WCF matter in case of Streaming

  The default value of MaxReceiveMessageSize in WCF is 65,536.  When you choose streaming as TransferMode, WCF runtime will create 8192 as buffer size. So what happened now is that WCF channel stack will read the first 8192 bytes, and decode the first couple of bytes as the size of the entire envelope.
