  • What's the best way to store sort order in SQL?

    The guys at the top want sort order to be customizable in our app. So I have a table that effectively defines the data type. What is the best way to store our sort order. If I just created a new column called 'Order' or something, every time I updated the order of one row I imagine I would have to update the order of every row to ensure posterity. Is there a better way to do it?

  • Centos 7. Freeradius fails to start on boot

    I was messing around with FreeRADIUS and MySQL (MariaDB) and it seems FreeRADIUS service can't start properly on startup. But it starts fine using root user or in debug mode (radiusd -X) and works just fine! And it spits out the same problem as in the radius.log. I tried disabling iptables and firewalld and rebooting, but no luck: systemctl disable iptables systemctl disable firewalld So maybe the problem is in the process startup order or delay of some kind. Maybe FreeRADIUS's SQL module can't connect to not yet started MariaDB? If it, how can I fix this? In earlier versions of RHEL/CENTOS I know you easily see service start order in like rc.d or stuff, now IDK. I am new to this fancy "systemd", "systemctl", "firewalld" stuff Centos 7 introduced so sorry I'm a little bit confused. Also this new FreeRADIUS 3 structure... PS.   • Copy one db diagram from one db to another on different servers? (Same db)

    I used the copy database wizard to copy my database from our test server to our production server, the database copied everything fine except for the diagram. Okay no problem, first I make sure the target database on production has the support objects created to use database diagraming. Then I select to import data from the other database and chose the dbo.sysdiagrams.Go through with the rest of the import data wizard, but then I get the following error: Validating (Error) Messages Error 0xc0202049: Data Flow Task: Failure inserting into the read-only column "diagram_id". (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) Error 0xc0202045: Data Flow Task: Column metadata validation failed.     I was just reading this article where the author talks about the file system fragmentation that can be caused by growing database files. There was one bit that I didn't quite follow. What about Windows defragmentation tools? Although you can use a Windows defragmentation tool to defragment your database files, these tools simply move chunks of files around to get them contiguous. This moving of chunks of files can cause internal fragmentation that you might not be able to resolve easily. Is the author saying here that the disc defragmenter makes no attempt to put the chunks of files in the correct sequence or have I misunderstood? If he is saying that then is this a limitation of all disc defragmenter utilities - even commercial ones?

  • Why when trying to restore a SQL DB from backup, it keeps referring to backup's original location an

    I've done a full DB backup to C:\Backups\MyDb.bak Then I've setup a job to incrementally back the DB up every day to that same location. Then I've moved the backup files to X:\Backups\, changing the target directory in backup job Now that I try to restore the database from backup, it keeps trying to refer to C:\Backups\MyDb.bak, but that file is no longer there. How do I fix the issue w/o having to move the backup files back to C:\Backups?

When I select Attach Databases and then attempt to browse to the files (C:\Users\username\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\nameofproject) it only lets me navigate to C:\Users\username...Why? How can I fix this?

  • SQL Server architecture - they want to move my database to new instance...Why?

    Our current production database environment contains about 10 similarily managed databases. Our agency has just purchased and is installing new blade chasses and wants to move my database to a new instance (leaving the other 9 on another). This decision is being driven by one of our IT staff, not a DBA. I am a project manager, not a DBA but I know enough to not necesarrily have a good feeling about this decision and I am urging our IT department to make a sound decision based on what is best for the database. Our IT department has stated that it is not good to have all our eggs in one basket, and has also stated that my database contains "regulatory data" so it should be on its own instance. A couple of truths: - None of the databases on the current instance are OLTP databases nor are any of them data warehouses - My database currently has joins/views to a couple of the other databases in the production environment So my questions are as follows: Am I wrong to disregard a statement about eggs in baskets? (hello, this is why we have maintenance plans/disaster recovery plans). I'll mention that other databases also have regulatory data too. What types of questions do I need to ask to determine if this is a sound decicion? (A DBA friend mentioned that if the service level agreement of said database does not radically differ from the others then why do they want to do this?) I have done some research on linked servers. What arguments should I bring forth about the fact that I have views setup that rely on data from other DBs currently?

If you connect using a connection string without sspi to a server is there any way a 3rd party can intercept on the wire the password used to log in? "Data Source=MyServer;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase;User Id=sa;Password=CanThisBeSniffed;" I am not asking about MiTM attacks just someone listing on the same computer or on the same hub on the network with wireshark or something similar running. I fired up wireshark myself and did not see it in plain text but it could be a simple obfuscation or proper encryption, I just wanted to know which.

I'm trying to keep this database to a certain size (do to MSDE size restrictions for my desktop users) and I'm not sure if the unallocated space affects the overall database size. Is there a way to remove this unallocated space from the database?

This site serves PDFs which has quick web view and if I access a pdf directly from the IIS server the PDFs starts to display immediately but if I go through the proxy I have to wait until the entire pdf downloads before I can view it.     I am trying to create a reporting spreadsheet that can print reports for a given time period. The query below works, but when I try to use a "?" parameter in place of the date, I get an error after selecting a cell containing my date. If I use single quotes ('?') I get a conversion from string to date/time failure, if I don't (?) I get a syntax error near @p1. Eventually I will need either a start and end date or a formula adding a month or shift to the starting date/time to filter the data down to important information. The query was built in Microsoft Query.   • Issue with corrupt 1tb volume: can we rescue SQL databases?

    We have an instance where some how a 1tb volume has become corrupted. There are Event ID 55 errors in the system event viewer. When running chkdsk, it gets to 47% verifying indexes and returns to the command prompt. If we are unable to rescue the data on the drive then we have a full backup of the databases from some time ago. The logfiles of which are on a different volume which is intact. Would it be viable to restore the databases and somehow replay the log files? I have seen articles about replaying logfiles from a logfile backup (.trn), however we have the actual logfiles (.ldf) Any help would be appreciated.

    I'm running Microsoft SQL 2008 on a Windows 2008 Server. The MSSQL server server authentication is set to SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode. I have created an active directory security group "xyz app users". I have added a normal user (without any active directory admin privledges) and a user with domain admin privledges to the "xyz app users" group. I have added the group to the MSSQL management console as a login user. This group is a member of the public server role and is mapped to two databases. On a workstation, when the normal user is logged in, I configure a DSN ODBC connection, and I'm able to successfully create the DSN and test the SQL connection. However, when I'm logged in as the user with domain admin privledges, when I attempt to configure the DSN ODBC connection, I can't get past the login ID configuration screen. If I select "windows authentication" and click "next", I get an error: Connection failed: SQLState: '28000' SQL Server Error: 18456 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'mydomain\myuser' On the server's application event logs, this error appears: Login failed for user 'mydomain\myuser'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: 172.x.x.x] And in MSSQL's event logs: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11 Solutions that I've seen so far do not seem to fit this situation (some solutions I've seen are only applicable when the BUILDIN\Administrator is being used locally on the server, which is not the case here).

  • mysql-connector-c++ - ‘get_driver_instance’ is not a member of ‘sql::mysql’

    I am a beginner at c++ and figured the only way I am going to learn is to get dirty with some code. I am trying to build a program that connects to a mysql database. I am using g++, on linux. With no ide. I run "make" and this is my error: hello.cpp:38: error: ‘get_driver_instance’ is not a member of ‘sql::mysql’ make: *** [hello.o] Error 1 Here is my code including makefile.
