• CSS issue with elements spanning columns

  Hi folks. Overview: I'm trying to create a relatively simple page layout detailed below and running into problems no matter how I try to approach it. Concept: - A standard-size-block layout. I'll quote unit widths: each content block is 240px square with 5px of margin around it. - A left column of fixed width of 1 unit (245px - 1 block + margin to left). No problems here. - A right column of variable width to fill the remaining space. No problems here either. - In the left column, a number of 1unit x 1unit blocks fixed down the column. Also some blank space at the top - again, not a problem. - In the right column: a number of free-floating blocks of standard unit-sizes which float around and fill the space given to them by the browser window. No problems here. - Lastly, a single element, 2 units wide, which sits half in the left column and half in the right column, and which the blocks in the right column still float around. My current problem is that the 1x1 blocks on the right do not respect the 2x1 block, and as a result half of the 2x1 block is overwritten by a 1x1 block in the right-hand column. I'm aware that this is almost certainly an issue with position: absolute taking things out of flow. However, can't really find a way round that which doesn't just throw up another problem instead. • Ball to Ball Collision - Detection and Handling

  With the help of the Stack Overflow community I've written a pretty basic-but fun physics simulator. You click and drag the mouse to launch a ball. It will bounce around and eventually stop on the "floor". My next big feature I want to add in is ball to ball collision. The ball's movement is broken up into a x and y speed vector. I have gravity (small reduction of the y vector each step), I have friction (small reduction of both vectors each collision with a wall). The balls honestly move around in a surprisingly realistic way. I guess my question has two parts: What is the best method to detect ball to ball collision? Do I just have an O(n^2) loop that iterates over each ball and checks every other ball to see if it's radius overlaps? What equations do I use to handle the ball to ball collisions? Physics 101 How does it effect the two balls speed x/y vectors? What is the resulting direction the two balls head off in? How do I apply this to each ball? Handling the collision detection of the "walls" and the resulting vector changes were easy but I see more complications with ball-ball collisions. With walls I simply had to take the negative of the appropriate x or y vector and off it would go in the correct direction. With balls I don't think it is that way. Some quick clarifications: for simplicity I'm ok with a perfectly elastic collision for now, also all my balls have the same mass right now, but I might change that in the future. • WPF - List View Row Index and Validation

  Hi, I have a ListView with TextBoxes in second column. I want to validate that my text box does not contain a number if the third column(data_type) is "Text". I am unable to do the validation. I tried a few approaches. In one approach I try to handle the MouseDown event and am trying to get the Row number so that I can get the data_type value of that row. I want to us this value in the Validate method. I have been struggling for a week now. • Why do I get this error when I try to push my SQLite3 to Postgresql (via Taps) on Cedar Stack?

  I've done quite a bit of research on Heroku Dev Center and I am now looking to the community for help. Here is my problem. I can not push my db to Heroku Cedar Stack. I am trying to migrate a sqlite database to postgresql via Taps gem. When I am ready to deploy I run: bundle install --without production heroku run db:push I get the following result: Running db:seed attached to terminal... up, run.17 sh: db:seed: not found heroku run rake db:migrate And when I run the migration: heroku run rake db:migrate I get the following: Running rake db:migrate attached to terminal... up, run.18 rake aborted! No Rakefile found (looking for: rakefile, Rakefile, rakefile.rb, Rakefile.rb) /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2367:in `raw_load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2007:in `block in load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2058:in `standard_exception_handling' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2006:in `load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:1991:in `run' /usr/local/bin/rake:31:in `<main>' Everytime I push to Heroku (git push heroku master) it fails because my gem file is attempting to install sqlite3 gem-even though its inside of the development and test groups in my Gemfile. • Getting overflow-y:scroll to work with fixed positioning html & css

  I have a Jquery tools scrollable thats set to be fixed to the bottom of the browser window. Ideally i would just like to get a overflow-y:scroll; working for the page as a whole when the browser is < 700px. (so no content gets hidden, as its all fixed place). This feels like it should be simple but its causing me huge headaches. js solutions are fine at this point. • What is the right tool to detect VMT or heap corruption in Delphi ?

  I'm a member in a team that use Delphi 2007 for a larger application and we suspect heap corruption because sometimes there are strange bugs that have no other explanation. I believe that the Rangechecking option for the compiler is only for arrays. I want a tool that give an exception or log when there is a write on a memory address that is not allocated by the application. Unfortunately I think that the solution is deeper than that. We use a patched version of Bold for Delphi as we own the source. Probably there are some errors introduced in the Bold framwork. Yes we have a log with callstacks that are handled by JCL and also trace messages. EDIT3: The theory right now is that the Virtual Memory Table (VMT) is somehow broken. When this happen there is no indication of it. Only when a method is called an exception is raised (ALWAYS on address FFFFFFDD, -35 decimal) but then it is too late. You don't know the real cause for the error. Any hint of how to catch a bug like this is really appreciated!!! We have tried with SafeMM, but the problem is that the memory consumption is too high even when the 3 GB flag is used. So now I try to give a bounty to the SO community :) EDIT4: One hint is that according the log there is often (or even always) another exception before this. It can be for example optimistic locking in the database. We have tried to raise exceptions by force but in test environment it just works fine. EDIT5: Story continues... I did a search on the logs for the last 30 days now. The result: "Read of address FFFFFFDB" 0 "Read of address FFFFFFDC" 24 "Read of address FFFFFFDD" 270 "Read of address FFFFFFDE" 22 "Read of address FFFFFFDF" 7 "Read of address FFFFFFE0" 20 "Read of address FFFFFFE1" 0 So the current theory is that an enum (there is a lots in Bold) overwrite a pointer. I got 5 hits with different address above. It could mean that the enum holds 5 values where the second one is most used. If there is an exception a rollback should occur for the database and Boldobjects should be destroyed. Maybe there is a chance that not everything is destroyed and a enum still can write to an address location. If this is true maybe it is possible to search the code by a regexpr for an enum with 5 values ? EDIT6: To summarize, no there is no solution to the problem yet. I realize that I may mislead you a bit with the callstack. Yes there are a timer in that but there are other callstacks without a timer. Sorry for that. But there are 2 common factors. An exception with Read of address FFFFFFxx. Top of callstack is System.TObject.InheritsFrom (sys\system.pas:9237) This convince me that VilleK best describe the problem. I'm also convinced that the problem is somewhere in the Bold framework. But the BIG question is, how can problems like this be solved ? It is not enough to have an Assert like VilleK suggest as the damage has already happened and the callstack is gone at that moment. So to describe my view of what may cause the error: Somewhere a pointer is assigned a bad value 1, but it can be also 0, 2, 3 etc. An object is assigned to that pointer. There is method call in the objects baseclass. This cause method TObject.InheritsForm to be called and an exception appear on address FFFFFFDD. Those 3 events can be together in the code but they may also be used much later. I think this is true for the last method call. EDIT7: We work closely with the the author of Bold Jan Norden and he recently found a bug in the OCL-evaluator in Bold framework. When this was fixed these kinds of exceptions decreased a lot but they still occasionally come. But it is a big relief that this is almost solved.

• Custom binding with WCF

  I have a wcf service where i have to implement the call backs and also i need to host the wcf service on the IIS 6.0, since IIS6.0 doesnot support the net.tcp binding, i decided to go for the custom binding. The reasons for going for custom binding is that the service is accessed by different clients in different timezones. Using custom binding i can set the allowed clock skew time to other values other than the default one. Once i uncomment the line in red, it will pop up a box stating that the application was stopped unexpectedly. • JSF : able to do mass update but unable to update a single row in a datatable

  I have a simple data object: Car. I am showing the properties of Car objects in a JSF datatable. If i display the properties using inputText tags, i am able to get the modified values in the managed bean. However i just want a single row editable. So have placed a edit button in a separate column and inputText and outputText for every property of Car. the edit button just toggles the rendering of inputText and outputText. Plus i placed a update button in a separate column which is used to save the updated values. However on clicking the update button, i still get the old values instead of the modified values.   I've written a custom view, with the OpenGL_1 technology, in order to let user rotate a red triangle just by dragging it along x axis. (Will give a rotation around Y axis). It works, but there is a bit of latency when dragging from one direction to the other (without releasing the mouse/finger). So it seems that my code is not yet "goal perfect". (I am convinced that no code is perfect in itself). I thought of using a quaternion, but maybe it won't be so usefull : must I really use a Quaternion (or a kind of Matrix) ? • Fading in/Fade out text in IE

  I had a problem and whipped up a quick solution: fade-in and fade-out a series of quotations. My solution works just as I want it in every browser except any of the IEs. The only problem with the IEs is that the text does not fade in and fade out; the text simply pops into existence. I believe I've run into a similar problem before when trying to dynamically change the filter:alpha(opacity=xx) of an element. • jQuery: Highlight element under mouse cursor?

  I'm trying to create an "element picker" in jQuery, like Firebug has. Basically, I want to highlight the element underneath the user's mouse. Then I listen for the mouseover event on every element, then move the div so that it covers that element. Right now, this just makes the whole page go red as soon as you move your mouse over the page. How can I get this to work nicer? Edit: Pretty sure the problem is that as soon as my mouse touches the page, the body gets selected, and then as I move my mouse around, none of the moments get passed through the highligher because its overtop of everything. • Architecture choice about representation of collections in Business Objects

  I have made certain choices in my architecture which I request the community to review and comment. I am breaking up the post in smaller sections to make it easier to understand the context and then suggest/comment. I am sorry that the post is long, but is required to explain the context. What am I building A typical business application where there are application users, security roles, business operation/action rights based on roles and several business modules like Stock Receive, Stock Transfer, Sale Order, Sale Invoice, Sale Return, Stock Audit etc. and several reports. The application is a WinForm application since it has a lot of rich and responsive UI requirements and has to operate in disconnected mode (with a local SQL Server), most of the time. What have I done I have built a framework - nothing to boast about, but just a set of libraries that serves the repetative requirements of my application, e.g. authentication, role based authorization, data access, validation, exception handling, logging, change status tracking, presentation model compliance and reasonable loose coupling between components. No, I have not written everything from scratch, you can say I have consolidated many things together like some concepts from CSLA, Martin Fowler for Presentation Model, blocks from Enterprise Library, Unity etc. to build a set of libraries that will help my developers be productive quickly without having to look up Google for many of the technical requirements. I have tried to keep the framework generic so that it can be used in typical business applications and also tried to follow some best practices that will support the same Business Objects to be used in an ASP.NET MVC environment also. My present architecture serves my objectives well, and have built several modules (on WinForm) without much trouble. The architecture also lent itself well to build some usable prototype on ASP.NET MVC with the same set of business objects, without changing a single line of code. My Dilemma I have used Custom Business Objects since that gives me a clearer OOP representation of the problem scope in my solution scope, and helps me visualize my entire solution as collection of objects with data and behavior rather than having a set of relational data (DataSet) and implement behaviours (business logic, validation) etc. separately. With rich databinding support in .NET 2.0 binding Custom Business Objects to UI was a breeze. Now while building my business objects, I am still in a dilemma about representation of collections in business objects. Currently I am using DataSets to represent collections while I have seen many suggestions to implement custom collections. For example, in my vision, a typical Sale Invoice Object will contain 'Sales Invoice Items' as a collection. Now theoritically, I can accept that the each 'Sales Invoice Item' should have its own behavior along with their data (ItemCode, Name, Qty, Price etc.) but typically managing of Sale Invoice Items in a Sale Invoice is handled by the Sale Invoice Object itself, e.g. adding/removing Items from collection. Additionally, we can also put business logic/rules for the Sales Invoice Items like "Qty should not be greater than the ordered qty", "Price should be max 10% above the price in Sale Order" etc. in the Sale Invoice object itself. With that kind of a vision, I felt that most business object child collections can be managed by the parent itself, including add/remove from collection as well and implementing business logic for the collection items, hence the collection items hold nothing but data. Additionally, typical collections are represented in UI in Grids, where ability to support DataBinding becomes very important for any collection. Implementing a custom collection, in that case would also mean, I have to implement robust DataBinding support as well, for the collection, which is of course time consuming. Now, considering child collection behaviors are implemented in the parent and the need for DataBinding of child collections, I chose DataSet to represent any child collection in my business objects. In the above example of Sale Invoice I will have 'Invoice Number', 'Date', 'Customer' etc. as attributes of the 'Sale Invoice' but 'InvoiceItems' as a DataSet. Of course, when I say DataSet, it is not a vanilla dataset but an extended DataSet that supports business rule validation and the same role based security model of my framework to allow/deny any business operation to rows/columns of the DataSet, automatically. This approach has allowed easier collection management and databinding in my business objects and my developers are able to deliver modules rapidly. Questions Do you feel that the approach is reasonable? Do you see any shortcomings of this approach? I am recently thinking of using 'Typed DataSets' as child collections, for easier representation in code, that will allow me to write 'currentInvoice.InvoiceItems' (for the DataTable) and 'invoiceItem.ProductCode' or 'invoiceItem.Qty', instead of 'drow["ProductCode"].ToString()' or '(int)drow["Qty"]' etc. Does this choice have any demerits? • How to occupy all the space in a div when working with min-height header / footer

  I believe this is a beginner's CSS question. I am utilizing the method described in http://www.xs4all.nl/~peterned/examples/csslayout1.html to fix a header to the top and a footer to the bottom. What I'd like to achieve now is two columns inside the content div. A left one of 200px and a right one that takes up the rest of the width. Unfortunately, I can't get the left and right divs to display correctly: they just don't grow vertically, and if I make the right div "width: 100%" it positions itself underneath the left one. What is the trick to make the left and right div take up all the space within the content div? The layout1.css is the original one.
