• j2ee implementing security and using a framwork pros and cons

  I'm a newbie to j2ee security, and i'm not j2ee expert either, though i'm really willing to put some effort and learn I've an application that i'm about to develop on Google App Engine (GAE) --with no time constraints. As you know GAE handles a lot of web container security issues for you, also I will be using openID for authentication exclusively (sessions will be handled by provider). GAE supports SSL which will help with confidentiality and integrity maybe. Authorization can be done through filters. I know reinventing the wheel is a mess, but I was looking forward to learn something about security and implement that in my new app. so what the pros and cons of using a framework like shiro, spring security, jguard etc or filling the rest of gaps on my own ?

• Retrieving Data from SQL Server within Excel 2007

  I have the following requirements I have relational content stored in a SQL Server 2005 database. I want to retrieve this data, transform it and display it in an Excel 2007 document. I would like this to be pulled from within Excel at the click of a button. As far as I can tell I have the following options... Create a view in Sql Server and reference it within a pivot table using a data connection. Create an Excel workbook using VSTO and create a web service which the workbook pulls data from Create a web service and use JScript with XMLHTTP request objects I currently only have a little experience of any of these methods (I'm very familiar with SQL Server although not pivot tables, I've created many web services although I've never used VSTO and I've used javascript extensively, but never in the context of Excel manipulation). Would you recommend one of the above approaches or is there a better way to do this?

  I'm trying to make a post, from an asp classic server side page, using the user credentials... I'm using msxml2.ServerXMLHTTP to programatically make the post I've tried with several configurations in the IIS 5.1 site, but there's no way I can make IIS run with a specified account... I made a little asp page that runs whoami to verify what account the iis process i using... with IIS 5.1, using integrated security the process uses: my_machine\IWAM_my_machine I disable integrated security, and leave a domain account as anonymous access, and I get the same (¿?) to test the user I do the following private function whoami() dim shell, cmd set shell = createObject("wscript.shell") set cmd = shell.exec( server.mapPath( "whoami.exe" ) ) whoami = cmd.stdOut.readAll() set shell = nothing: set cmd = nothing end function is it because I'm issuing a shell command? I'd like to make http post calls, to another site that works with integrated security... So I need some way to pass the credentials, or at least to run with a specified account, and then configure the remote site to thrust that account... I thought that just setting the site to work with integrated security would be enough... • Creating a Cross-Process EventWaitHandle

  I have two windows application, one is a windows service which create EventWaitHandle and wait for it. Second application is a windows gui which open it by calling EventWaitHandle.OpenExisting() and try to Set the event. But I am getting an exception in OpenExisting.   In ASP.NET you can tackle the internationalization requirement by taking advantage of native support to local and global resources used with the ResourceExpressionBuilder. But with this approach you cannot access public resources defined in external assemblies referenced by your Web application. However, since you can extend the .NET resource provider mechanism and create new expression builders you can workaround this limitation and use external resources in your ASPX pages much like you use local or global resources. • Web Services vs Persistent Sockets

  I plan on doing a little benchmarking around this question, myself. But I thought it would be good to get some initial feedback from "the community". Has anyone out there done any analysis regarding the pros and cons of these two technologies? My thoughts: Opening and closing TCP/IP connections for web service calls is relatively expensive compared to persistent connections. Dealing with intermittent connection errors and state, etc... would be easier with a web service based framework. You don't see World of Warcraft using web services. One question that I can't seem to find much of answer for anywhere (even on here)... are the limits on the # of persistent connections a single network card can support, etc?

  I have a xml that i need to bind to XTemplate. The XML structure is as follows John Smith John Doe Johny Byrd I am using Ext.data.Store with proxyurl tot he xml, Ext.data.XML reader to rad the xml and a listener that bind the data to the Xtemplate. The xmlreader needs a root node to be specified and i have to give root name as "Student_Name" It need to bind it to one more store for "Faculty_Name" as the root node. SO i end up calling my service to get xml twice. Is there a way to call service once to get the xml and bind it to two stores with different root nodes.

• What is a good pattern for binding a collection of objects coming from WCF, in Silverlight?

  Hi there, I've got a question about a Silverlight WCF Databinding pattern: There are many examples about how to bind data using {Binding} expressions in XAML, how to make async calls to a WCF service, set the DataContext property of a element in the UI, how to use ObservableCollections and INotifyPropertyChanged, INotifyCollectionChanged and so on. Background: I'm using the MVVM pattern, and have a Silverlight ItemsControl, whose ItemsSource is set to an ObservableCollection property on my ViewModel object. My view is of course the XAML which has the {Binding}. Say the model object is called 'Metric'. My ViewModel periodically makes calls to a WCF service that returns ObservableCollection. MetricInfo is the data transfer object (DTO). My question is two-fold: Is there any way to avoid copying each property of MetricInfo to the model class - Metric? When the WCF calls completes, is there any way to make sure I sync the items which are in both my local ObservableCollection and the result of the WCF call - without having to first clear out all the items in the local collection and then add all the ones from the WCF call result? thanks, Krishna

I want to log exceptions that are thrown on client to be logged in Sql Lite Database (Win app is using Sql Lite database for storing data locally). And then later it should be sent to the wcf service when required so that it can be useful for support/analysis/application improvement. I want a method which can be directly called in every catch block simply by LogHelper.Log(ex). I would like to know if anyone has done it through Enterprise library or used any good practice for such situation?

• Removing http301 redirect from client's cache

  Hi, I have a server/client architecture where the client hits the ASP.NET server's service at a certain host name, IP address, and port. Without thinking, I logged on to the server and set up permanent HTTP301 redirection through IIS from that service to another URL that the machine handles via IIS (same IP and port), mistakenly thinking it was another site that is hosted there. When the client hit the server at the old host name, it cached the permanent redirect. Now, even though I have removed the redirection, the client no longer uses the old address. How can I clear the client's cache so that it no longer stores the redirect? I have read about how permanent HTTP301 can be, but in this case, it should be possible to reset a single client's knowledge of the incorrectly-learned host name. Any ideas?

• Entity Framework - Optimistic Concurrency Issue

  I have a windows service that runs every 10 seconds ... each time it runs, it takes some test data, modifies it and persists it to the database using the EntityFramework. However, on every second run, when I try to persist the change I get the following Optimistic Concurrency Exception:- Store update, insert, or delete statement affected an unexpected number of rows (0). Entities may have been modified or deleted since entities were loaded. Refresh ObjectStateManager entries I know for a fact that there is nothing else writing to that DB but my service which updates records every 10 seconds. What could be causing the concurrency exception here ?

• WCF DataContracts and underlying data structures

  I am wondering what makes sense in relation to what objects to expose through a WCF service - should I add WCF Serialization specifications to my business entities or should I implement a converter that maps my business entities to the DataContracts that I want to expose through my WCF service? Right now I have entities on different levels: DataAccess, Business and Contract. I have converters in place that can map entities from DataAccess to Business and from Business to Contract and vice versa. Implementing and Maintaining those is time consuming and pretty tedious. What are best practices in relation to this? If I were using an OR/M such as NHibernate or Entity Framework should I be exposing the entities from the ORM directly or should I abstract them the same way I am doing now? Thanks in advance.

• Unit Testing Codeigniter Classes with fooStack - clashes

  I'm having 'fun' testing interactions in a CodeIgniter based web app. It seems when running the entire test suite "phpunit AllTests.php" it loads all of the test classes, their targets (Systems under Test) and creates a PHPUnit_Framework_TestSuite instance which presumably iterates over the classes which extend CIUnit_TestCase and runs them. The problem comes where you have multiple classes referencing another class (such as a library). As all the classes are loaded into the same process space, PHP reports "cannot redefine class xyz". Have I missed something here or doing something haenously wrong? In my test class i'm doing something like: include_once dirname(__FILE__).'/../CIUnit.php'; include_once dirname(__FILE__).'/../../libraries/ProductsService.php'; class testProductsService extends CIUnit_TestCase { public function testGetProducts_ReturnsArrayOfProducts(){ $service = new ProductsService(); $products = $service->getProducts(); $this->assertTrue(is_array($products)); } } The problem manifests as I have a controller which does: $this->load->library('ProductsService');

• ASP.Net State Server on EC2 not connection

  I am trying to set up an Asp.Net State Server on Amazon EC2. The single web server using this State Server is also on EC2. I've done the following things. I've added the IIS role on the State Server. I changed the value in the registry to allow connections for the service and started the aspstate service. I verified it is listening on port 42424 by checking netstat. I edited the web.config of the Web server to point to this server. I added the the tcp port to my EC2 security group and allowed it for all incoming ip's. Anything else I am not doing?

I just google around for some solution and i found wsimport and wsdl2java(Axis) are two options in java domain. But i am still unable to find any solution related to Android.   Hi, We're experiencing a strange problem with Oracle RAC and McAfee anti-virus. As part of the installation of the Oracle RAC we disable anti virus as directed. We have had our RAC running fine, but when we came to re-enable the AV and reboot we got the BSOD. Abnormal Program Termination (BugCheck, STOP: 0x00000035 (0x8E984678, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS Following the standard process of raising this problem with Microsoft they identify the problem and also a fix. Microsoft talk about too many file filter drivers being present and pushing the DFS upper limit beyond the default size. Upping this value, as per msdn, has no impact. We're able to recover from this BSOD by disabling AV. We don't have the problem if we run the AV service manually whilst the system is up. However, if we make the service automatic we fail to boot. • how to profile silverlight mvvm application with a lot of custom controls

  There is a quite big LOB silverlight application and we wrote a lot of custom controls which are rather heavy in drawing. All data is loaded by RIA service, processed and bound (using INofityPropertyChanged interface) to the view. The problem is that first drawing takes a lot time. Following calls to the service (server) and redrawing is quite fast. I used Equatec profiler to track the problem. I saw that processing takes a couple of miliseconds only so my idea is that the drawing by SL engine is slow. I'm wondering if it is possible to profile somehow processes inside SL to check which drawing operations are taking too much time. Are there any guidelines how to implement faster drawing of complex custom controls?
