• Troubleshooting .NET "Fatal Execution Engine Error"

  Summary: I periodically get a .NET Fatal Execution Engine Error on an application which I cannot seem to debug. The dialog that comes up only offers to close the program or send information about the error to Microsoft. I've tried looking at the more detailed information but I don't know how to make use of it. Error: The error is visible in Event Viewer under Applications and is as follows: .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.3607 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (7A09795E) (80131506) The computer running it is Windows XP Professional SP 3. (Intel Core2Quad Q6600 2.4GHz w/ 2.0 GB of RAM) Other .NET-based projects that lack multi-threaded downloading (see below) seem to run just fine. Application: The application is written in C#/.NET 3.5 using VS2008, and installed via a setup project. The app is multi-threaded and downloads data from multiple web servers using System.Net.HttpWebRequest and its methods. I've determined that the .NET error has something to do with either threading or HttpWebRequest but I haven't been able to get any closer as this particular error seems impossible to debug. I've tried handling errors on many levels, including the following in Program.cs: // handle UI thread exceptions Application.ThreadException += new ThreadExceptionEventHandler(Application_ThreadException); // handle non-UI thread exceptions AppDomain.CurrentDomain.UnhandledException += new UnhandledExceptionEventHandler(CurrentDomain_UnhandledException); Application.EnableVisualStyles(); Application.SetCompatibleTextRenderingDefault(false); // force all windows forms errors to go through our handler Application.SetUnhandledExceptionMode(UnhandledExceptionMode.CatchException); More Notes and What I've Tried... Installed Visual Studio 2008 on the target machine and tried running in debug mode, but the error still occurs, with no hint as to where in source code it occurred. When running the program from its installed version (Release) the error occurs more frequently, usually within minutes of launching the application. When running the program in debug mode inside of VS2008, it can run for hours or days before generating the error. Reinstalled .NET 3.5 and made sure all updates are applied. Broke random cubicle objects in frustration. Rewritten parts of code that deal with threading and downloading in attempts to catch and log exceptions, though logging seemed to aggravate the problem (and never provided any data). Question: What steps can I take to troubleshoot or debug this kind of error? Memory dumps and the like seem to be the next step, but I'm not experienced at interpreting them. Perhaps there's something more I can do in the code to try and catch errors... It would be nice if the "Fatal Execution Engine Error" was more informative, but internet searches have only told me that it's a common error for a lot of .NET-related items.

• IE7 not digesting JSON: "parse error" [resolved]

  While trying to GET a JSON, my callback function is NOT firing. $.ajax({ type:"GET", dataType:'json', url: myLocalURL, data: myData, success: function(returned_data){alert('success');} }); The strangest part of this is that my JSON(s) validates on JSONlint this ONLY fails on IE7...it works in Safari, Chrome, and all versions of Firefox, (EDIT: and even in IE8). If I use 'error', then it reports "parseError"...even though it validates! Is there anything that I'm missing? Does IE7 not process certain characters, data structures (my data doesn't have anything non-alphanumeric, but it DOES have nested JSONs)? I have used tons of other AJAX calls that all work (even in IE7), but with the exception of THIS call. An example data return (EDIT: This is a structurally-complete example, meaning it is only missing a few second-tier fields, but follows this exact hierarchy)here is: {"question":{ "question_id":"19", "question_text":"testing", "other_crap":"none" }, "timestamp":{ "response":"answer", "response_text":"the text here" } } I am completely at a loss. Hopefully someone has some insight into what's going on...thank you! ANSWER I finally managed to figure it out...mostly via tedious trial-and-error. I want to thank everyone for their suggestions...as soon as I have 15 rep, I'll upvote you, I promise. :) There was basically no way that you guys could have figured it out, because the issue turned out to be a strange bug between IE7 and Django (my research didn't bring up any similar issues). We were basically using Django template language to generate our JSON...and in the midst of this particular JSON, we were using custom template tags: {% load customfilter %} { "question":{ "question_id":"{{question.id}}", "question_text":"{{question.question_text|customfilterhere}}" } } As soon as I deleted anything related to the customfilter, IE7 was able to parse the JSON perfectly! We still don't have a workaround yet, but at least we now know what's causing it. Has anyone seen any similar issues? Once again, thank you everyone for your contributions.

• Truncate text to fit table cell without wrapping using css or jquery

  I want the text in one of the columns of a table to not wrap, but to just truncate so that it fits within the current size of the table cell. I don't want the table cell to change size, as I need the table to be exactly 100% the width of the container. This is because the table with 100% width is inside of a positioned div with overflow: auto (it's actually inside of a jquery UI.Layout panel). I tried both overflow: hidden and the text still wrapped.   i would like to ask you which automated build environment you consider better, based on practical experience. i'm planning to do some .Net and some Java development, so i would like to have a tool that supports both these platforms. i've been reading around and found out about CruiseControl.NET, used on stackoverflow development, and TeamCity with its support for build agents on different OS-platforms and based on different programming languages. so, if you have some practical experience on both of those, which one you prefer and why. currently, i'm mostly interested in the ease of use and management of the tool, much less in the fact that CC is open source, and TC is a subject to licensing at some point when you have much projects to run (because, i need it for a small amount of projects). also, if there is some other tool that meets the above-mentioned and you believe it's worth a recommendation - feel free to include it in the discussion.

  I'm only starting with Android dev, and while the Milestone is a nice device Java is not my natural language and I'm struggling with both the Google docs on Android SDK, Eclipse and Java itself. Anyway... I'm writing a microblog client for Android to go along with my Windows client (MahTweets). At the moment I've got Tweets coming and going without fail, the problem is with the UI. • iPad application crash in Apple review - cannot replicate in simulator, have crash log

I have tried repeatedly to submit an application to Apple (iPad in this case) that is crashing on their end when testing but I cannot replicated the situation on my end (obviously I only have the damned simulator to work with at this point). If retrieving the album cover fails for some reason the object is filled with a default image and then added. The last line of the code is what's showing up in the crash log. It runs fine in the simulator but crashes 100% in testing on device apparently. Can anyone tell me what I am missing here?

• Can't Deploy or Upload Large SSRS 2008 Report from VS or IE

  So far in this project I have two reports in VS2008/BIDS. The first one contains 1 tablix and is about 100k. The second one contains 3 tablixes (tablices?) and is about 257k. I can successfully deploy the smaller report from VS and I can upload it from the Report Manager in IE. I can view/run it from Report Manager and I can get to the Report Server (web service) URL from my browser just fine. Everything is done over HTTPS and there is nothing wrong with the certificates. With the larger report, the error I get in VS is "The operation has timed out" after about 100 seconds. The error when I upload from IE is "The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send" after about 130 seconds. In the RSReportServer.config file I tried changing Authentication/EnableAuthPersistence from true to false and restarting the service, but still get the error. I have the key "SecureConnectionLevel" set to 2. Changing this to 0 and turning off SSL is not going to be an option. I added a registry key named "MaxRequestBytes" to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters and set it to 5242880 (5MB) and restarted the HTTP and SRS services as suggested in a forum post by Jin Chen of MSFT. I still cannot upload the larger report. This is on MS SQL 2008 and WS 2003. • jQuery - growlUI and ASP Update Panel Postback Problem

  I am using the jQuery blockUI plugin's growlUI to display a return status message to the user when returning from an async postback from an update panel. What happens is after returning and displaying the growl notification, any further postbacks seem to be broken and the app just spins. I am using the ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock method to register the script. and calling the growl UI method in javascript with $.growlUI('Notification', 'Message'); There are no javascript errors being displayed.

  Hi, We want to configure ADFS 2.0 as SP and CA SiteMinder as IdP using SAML 2.0. In ADFS 2.0 we have a test application which is deployed using WIF. We have configured both the things correctly. However, while testing the federation it gives 2 options of selecting the Identity provider correctly. However, after we enter the credentials we get internal server error as message.   I'm trying to automate in a WinForm using a WebBrowser control to navigate and pull report info from a website. You can enter values in textboxes and invoke the click events for buttons and links, but I have not figured out how select a option drop-down .... in a automated way. The web service is developed with WCF, basic http binding, SOAP 1.1. If I use SOAP UI (JAVA), the service works properly. But instead the Element "NS2:GetCustomerReques" was found. Now my questions is: Can I somehow change the way Delphi creates the envelope? Or are the ways to make WCF work with such message formats? Any help is greatly appreciated!

• TFS 2010 build config transform problem

  Hi all, I'm facing quite a problem while setting up automated TFS Builds. Basically I created new configuration called Tests, added transform config, defined different connection strings for the Database. Then defined TFS build, building whole solution with MSBuild arguments /p:DeployOnBuild=True /p:Configuration=Tests. The problem is that in the drop location (Build_PublishedWebsites\Project) I get web.config, web.debug.config, web.release.config and web.tests.config, however I would expect just one transformed web.config. I already checked PDC presentation Web Deployment Painkillers: Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 & MS Deploy but didn't help. Thanks for any answer.

I'm thinking things like ORMs (NHibernate, EF), logging frameworks (Log4Net), IoC containers, rules engines, UI frameworks (Telerik), etc. Are there certain technologies that you always bring in regardless of project type / complexity? Are there certain others that you bring in sometimes when complexity warrants it? This seems like a moving target, and I'm curious what people are using as their "basic setup" nowadays.
