• Fix for OpenSolaris with no gcc vs. Nexenta with no ext3

  I'm attempting to migrate my server from linux to a Solaris variant during a hardware upgrade. The machine is based around an Abit AN-M2 board which has an NForce chipset. I have what seems to be a chicken-and-egg problem of sorts: OpenSolaris 2009.06 does not recognize the NIC and I cannot compile the drivers for it as it also lacks gcc. I haven't tested as to whether or not I can mount an ext3 partition yet but its moot if there is no networking. Nexenta 3.0b3 recognizes the NIC but I cannot get the ext3 drives mounted due to FSWfspart refusing to install. I do not know much about Solaris but I wager this is due to the fact that Nexenta is based around Debian as well. While I am reusing the mobo/CPU combo, I did just spent a lot of money on the other hardware around it and would very much like to get it up and running smoothly and quickly. Does anyone have any suggestions that are not: Get a new mobo/CPU Run another OS Use alternate NIC

  I have the dreamspark MS license. However, everytime I have to install Windows on my PC, I get many updates and this process is long and boring. Is there any way to download the lastest Windows ISO with updates? I'm trying to install Windows 7 (but Windows 8 would also be helpful). Note: I don't want just download windows. I want to download the OS with the lastest updates, those that are downloaded with Windows update after installing it!! Thanks!

• How to practice object oriented programming?

  I've always programmed in procedural languages and currently I'm moving towards object orientation. The main problem I've faced is that I can't see a way to practice object orientation in an effective way. I'll explain my point. When I've learned PHP and C it was pretty easy to practice: it was just matter of choosing something and thinking about an algorithm for that thing. In PHP for example, it was matter os sitting down and thinking: "well, just to practice, let me build one application with an administration area where people can add products". This was pretty easy, it was matter of thinking of an algorithm to register some user, to login the user, and to add the products. Combining these with PHP features, it was a good way to practice. Now, in object orientation we have lots of additional things. It's not just a matter of thinking about an algorithm, but analysing requirements deeper, writing use cases, figuring out class diagrams, properties and methods, setting up dependency injection and lots of things. The main point is that in the way I've been learning object orientation it seems that a good design is crucial, while in procedural languages one vague idea was enough. I'm not saying that in procedural languages we can write good software without design, just that for sake of practicing it is feasible, while in object orientation it seems not feasible to go without a good design, even for practicing. This seems to be a problem, because if each time I'm going to practice I need to figure out tons of requirements, use cases and so on, it seems to become not a good way to become better at object orientation, because this requires me to have one whole idea for an app everytime I'm going to practice. Because of that, what's a good way to practice object orientation?

• Security Alert For CVE-2010-4476 Released

  Hello, this is Eric Maurice again. Oracle just released a Security Alert with a fix for the vulnerability CVE-2010-4476, which affects Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. This vulnerability is present in Java running on servers as well as standalone Java desktop applications. Its successful exploitation by a malicious attacker can result in a complete denial of service for the affected servers. While only recently publicly disclosed, a number of Internet sites have since then reproduced details about this vulnerability, including exploit codes, which may result in allowing a malicious attacker to create a denial of service condition against the targeted system. Oracle therefore strongly recommends that affected organizations apply this fix as soon as possible. Please note that a fix for this vulnerability will also be included in the upcoming Java Critical Patch Update (Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011), which will be released on February 15th 2011. Note that the impact of this vulnerability on desktops is minimal: the affected applications or applets running in Internet browsers for example, might stop responding and may need to be restarted; however the desktop itself will not be compromised (i.e. no compromise at the desktop OS level). Oracle therefore recommends that consumers use the Java auto-update mechanism to get this fix. This will prompt them to install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment 6 update 24 or higher (JRE), which includes the fix for this vulnerability. JRE 6 update 24 will also be distributed with the Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011. • Switching from Windows Virtual PC to VirtualBox without formatting

  I have a Win7 virtual machine running on Windows Virtual PC where I'm currently developing. I found that I dislike WVPC, and installed VirtualBox, hoping for better performance. However, importing the existing VHD into a new VM seems to not work, because even if I see the Windows boot screen, the OS will crash on a BSOD and requires the restore tool to run. That tool finds no problem, reboots but the BSOD is still present. I wouldn't like to format a new VM if possible. Is it possible to do such switching?

• VPN and Bonjour conflicting

  Does anyone know why a VPN connection might interfere with Apple's Bonjour? I've noticed that my Mac and various iDevices have trouble finding each other on my local network, when I have VPN connections open. Things like Home Sharing and Wi-Fi Sync work some of the time, but sometimes fail to find the other device. The VPN connections are made using IPSecuritas, which is a GUI around raccoon. I have the local "endpoint mode" set to Host. Apple mentions that Home Sharing may conflict with VPNs, but they don't specify why, or how to fix it. I'm using a Mac with OS 10.7.3 and IPSecuritas to connect to the VPN, an iPhone, and an iPad.

The specs are: 700MHz G4 640MB RAM (should be enough for anyone!) OS-X 10.3 40GB hard disc with 30GB free space I'd like a recommendataion for an office suite that will work on these old boxes. I have tried Open Office, both the latest version and 2.4.3 for PPC with no luck. Yes, I do have X11 installed.

• Renting linux server just to make backups of my personnal data ?

  Hi all, I would like to be able to backup ALL my computers data on a Linux server. For now, I have a home server, but soon I will be travelling, without home (so no home server). I was thinking of renting a dedicated linux webserver, but this is expensive, and I don't need a fast machine "web-oriented" with mysql server and all, I just need a full SSH access (full control, and then I install my programs). Does "backup servers" exist ? Am I doing it wrong (maybe that is not a good solution) ? Note : I run Mac OS, Windows and Linux, I backup through rsync, I want full control on my backup, not an automated "magic" backup like MobileMe or anything like that. • Is there a way to modify the default size of a new side note in OneNote 2010?

  I am a fan of OneNote, but there is one aspect of it that makes it less useful than it could be. When I make a new side note (i.e. by clicking the OneNote icon in the system tray or pressing WindowsKey + N), the size of the window of the resulting note that opens is far too large. It probably takes up 20% of my reasonably high-res screen by default. I have to click and drag to resize it, and that's a waste of my time. So, I have a two part question: Is there a way of modifying some settings somewhere (perhaps in the registry?) so that the default window size of a new side note is smaller than the default? I would prefer something more in line with the size of a new "sticky" note in OS X. If not, does anyone know of a fast way to shrink the size of a window using the keyboard? I'd appreciate any advice that anyone can give. Thanks.

• How can I update fontconfig to a newer version in Red Hat 5.3?

  I want to update fontconfig to a newer version but it seems that the OS is still finding the old fontconfig and I need the newer version to build qt. How do I make Red Hat 5.3 see the newer version? I do not know if this helps but when I did a search for fontconfig I found some files in a folder called cache. When I do yum update it tells me everything is up to date but that version is too old and is missing FcFreeTypeQueryFace. Just send me a comment if this is wrong site and ill change it.

• Good scanner to buy as of January 2010

  I'm planning to buy a scanner soon and since I didn't purchased one in years I wanted to know which brand / models are the "best". The ability to scan negatives is a nice to have but not 100% required. If you are specifing a model in particular, plase note that it must work under 64-bit OS (I'm using Windows 7 Ulitmate 64-bit). I'm not looking for a all-in-one solution like scanner/fax/printer. I want to use this to scan "old" photos from the non-digital era :) And sometimes to scan magazines and books. I am located in Canada it would be nice if your suggestion is available here. I usually buy online at NCIX and DirectCanada if it can help you see what's available there. Edit: My search leaded me to 2 particular models. I hesitate between Canon CanoScan 8800F and Epson V600. Anyone have good/bad words on either of them?

• Domain Outlook user is asked for password every time despite checking the 'remember password' button

  We have a windows 2003 domain. All users have roaming profiles. We have a couple of users who, when they log into outlook, are asked for their password every time, despite selecting the 'remember my password' option. Our email is externally hosted exchange email. I've tried several fixes found on google such as deleting 'protect' folder in the user's profile, and deleting protect key in the registry but none work. I tried storing the password in windows' password/credentials manager, didn't work. It happens on any PC the users log into so it's not a machine specific problem. Any ideas? OS is Windows XP pro. Outlook is 2007.

  Let me explain my backup strategy and the problem I am facing. My current backup strategy: Open encrypted container and execute Carbon Copy Cleaner on it at least once a week. Rotate backup disks. Problem: I have an Truecrypt partition on my 1st external hard disk. I recently found out that some files on this encrypted partition cannot be read due to bad blocks (reported by Antonio Diaz's GNU 'ddrescue'). My backup strategy is ineffective in this scenario because bad blocks are discovered during backup. Possible strategy Strategy #0: Have the encrypted partition over a RAID 1 with 2 disks. Is this a suitable strategy ? Strategy #1: Do you think of any other one ? Environment: Mac OS X 10.8 External 2.5" hard disk (SATA) No RAID

  What's a "Cloud Operating System"? Oracle's recently introduced Solaris 11 has been touted as "The First Cloud OS". Interesting claim, but what exactly does it mean? To answer that, we need to recall what characteristics define a cloud and then see how Solaris 11's capabilities map to those characteristics. By now, most cloud computing professionals have at least heard of, if not adopted, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Definition of Cloud Computing, including its vocabulary and conceptual architecture. NIST says that cloud computing includes these five characteristics: On-demand self-service Broad network access Resource pooling Rapid elasticity Measured service How does Solaris 11 support these capabilities? Well, one of the key enabling technologies for cloud computing is virtualization, and Solaris 11 along with Oracle's SPARC and x86 hardware offerings provides the full range of virtualization technologies including dynamic hardware domains, hypervisors for both x86 and SPARC systems, and efficient non-hypervisor workload virtualization with containers. This provides the elasticity needed for cloud systems by supporting on-demand creation and resizing of application environments; it supports the safe partitioning of cloud systems into multi-tenant infrastructures, adding resources as needed and deprovisioning computing resources when no longer needed, allowing for pay-only-for-usage chargeback models. For cloud computing developers, add to that the next generation of Java, and you've got the NIST requirements covered. The results, or one of them anyway, are services like the new Oracle Public Cloud. And Solaris is the ideal platform for running your Java applications. So, if you want to develop for cloud computing, for IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS, start with an operating system designed to support cloud's key requirements…start with Solaris 11.

• Which hardware changes require operating system reinstallation?

  I'm about to upgrade my computer but might keep some parts. Just wandering what I would have to keep to prevent me having to reinstall my OSs, at the moment I have a dual boot setup with ubuntu and windows 7. I'm pretty sure you can't just take your hard drive with the OS on it and put it into a different box and keep going (can you?) but I know you can change the graphics cards, secondary hard drives and ram with out a problem. So what is it that you can't change? The CPU? Motherboard? Thanks for any replies

• A Virtual Dilemma

  Solving a Gotcha with VirtualBox Guest Additions I was just building a new virtual machine based off an existing image that didn’t have the Virtual Box Guest Additions enabled.  The guest additions allow tight integration between the guest OS and the host environment, providing seemless mouse transfer and the ability to take advantage of full video screen size.  The guest additions need to be linked with the kernel which requires the kernel-devel package to be installed.  After installing this package and then trying to add the guest additions it failed, suggesting that I might not have the kernel-devel package that I had installed.  After a little though I finally realized what had happened.  When I grabbed the kernel-devel package I hadn’t checked the version of my kernel.  The kernel-devel I downloaded didn’t match the revision of the kernel I was running!  Hence my problems.  I upgraded the kernel to the same revision as my kernel-devel package and rebooted.  I had installed dkms so I was pleased to see that my VBox Additions successfully built and the mouse and screen now worked as expected. So now you know my embarrassing story for the day :-)

• Unknown filesystem error

  My computer has (had) a dual boot of Ubuntu Precise and Windows 7. Recently, when I started the computer, grub gave me an error saying "Unknown filesystem", and sent me to grub rescue. I searched for solutions to this, and found this answer: Unknown filesystem error: grub rescue. I followed the instructions there, but they didn't really help: when I restarted the computer, it went straight to Windows without grub intervening at all (so it boots successfully, just not to the OS I want). This is the log from boot-repair. My Ubuntu partition is sda6. Naturally, I'm a little worried, since the log says "unknown filesystem type ''", which to me looks like the partition might be corrupt somehow. From the Ubuntu Live CD, I started gparted and looked at my partitions, and it also told me that my sda6 is an unknown filesystem. So my questions are basically: Can I restore Ubuntu to the way it was? If not, can I at least rescue the data I had on the partition somehow? Again, if I can't restore Ubuntu, how do I clean everything up so that I can reinstall it without too many complications? Another thing I should mention is that yesterday I had a similar problem where the computer told me there was a problem with the hard drive when it was starting, but it fixed itself by running fsck (that time it got past grub, and managed to start Ubuntu). Between that occasion and me having trouble booting the computer today, I have booted it successfully at least twice. Thanks for any help!

  When all of the following conditions are true, excel will open (most of the time) but will not open the document itself. No error is displayed. This only occurs with Excel files, Word and powerpoint do open perfectly. Conditions : OS is "Windows 7 Professional 64-bit" office is "Office 2007 Ultimate". excel file is in .xls (2003 format) excel file is password protected excel file is in "My Documents" (or a subfolder of it) file is double-clicked from explorer under Windows 7. Following options do open the excel file as it should : right click and selecting the (bold) open action single click the file and pressing enter moving the file to the desktop and double-click it. non password protected files do open from the same directory. Actions taken not resolving the problem: - reboot - repair office installation - system restore does not work because of Antivirus application installed (message from system restore, using "Symantec Internet Security 2010") Anyone any idea ?

I'd like to backup my entire C:\ drive (the only partition) in a way that: Preserves all of my installed software and configuration, but Avoids backing up log files and other ephemeral / temporary files that are regenerated during normal operation of the OS. Which files and/or directories should I be excluding from backups? I'd like to make this a community wiki, so that we could all contribute towards a definitive list. • Corporate IM with video that actually works, suggestions?

  Hi. Does anyone here have a suggestion for a cross-platform IM solution wich will work with voip/video on both Windows (XP and 7) and Mac OS X from 10.4 and upwards? Right now were in a kind of mixed enviroment, with some Mac users using iChat server since they need video support (conference across several offices over VPN), but it wont't work on windows clients. The rest of us are happily using Openfire+Spark, but there's no VoIP or video avaible from what i've found, unless you want to add in several 3rd party software (like red5 and asterisk). Requirements: As said before; must work on both Windows and Mac Internal server (no Skype etc) File transfer between platforms SSO (Single Sign-On) via Active Directory authentication Some sort of screen sharing would be a plus, like switching over to a screen capture (powerpoint, software training etc) We can afford to buy software if that's needed to get this working without any hiccups across platforms.   Everyone knows of the old adage that the best programmers can be orders of magnitude better than the average. I've personally seen good code and programmers, but never something so absurd. So the questions is, what is the most impressive feat of programming you ever witnessed or heard of? You can define impressive by: The scope of the task at hand e.g. John single handedly developed the framework for his company, a work comparable in scope to what the other 200 employed were doing combined. Speed e.g. Stu programmed an entire real time multi-tasking app OS on an weekened including its own C compiler and shell command line tools Complexity e.g. Jane rearchitected our entire 10 millon LOC app to work in a cluster of servers. And she did it in an afternoon. Quality e.g. Charles's code had a rate of defects per LOC 100 times lesser than the company average. Furthermore he code was clean and understandable by all. Obviously, the more of these characteristics combined, and the more extreme each of them, the more impressive is the feat. So, let me have it. What's the most absurd feat you can recount? Please provide as much detail as possible and try to avoid urban legends or exaggerations. Post only what you can actually vouch for. Bonus questions: Was the herculean task a one-of, or did the individual regularly amazed people? How do you explain such impressive performance? How was the programmer recognized for such awesome work?

• What is the "Apple" key and what key is it that is depicted as part of an upper case X?

  I read in some answers about using the "Apple" + "Space bar" keys. Which is the "Apple" key? Also, I see in my Mac OS X Safari menu bar that to open the download window I can use a 3 key combination. The last of the 3 keys are the Command key (depicted with a clover leaf symbol) and the 'L' key. The first key is the one I don't see anywhere. It is depicted by a symbol that looks to me like an upper case 'X' with most of the forward slash part removed. What key is that? OK, just discovered by trial and error that it must be a symbol for the "option" key. What is that symbol called and why is it not on the keyboard?

• How do I learn IPSec VPN implementation on FreeBSD from pfSense

  I've been trying to figure out a complete working solution for IPSec VPN implementation on FreeBSD but with no luck till now. pfSense seems did a fantastic job on supporting IPSec and even for mobile clients, so I downloaded and installed pfSense hoping to figure out how it works, or at least see some configuration examples, but I couldn't find anything interesting maybe because I'm not familiar with pfSense, so I'd like to ask for help. How pfSense implements IPSec, what tools are used? Where does pfSense store all its configuration files? And since pfSense has its own kernel mods and acts as a different OS, there's no way for us to install it on top of an existing FreeBSD box, and plus that it is such a great project combining those fantastic features, so my question can kinda be extended as: How do we learn from pfSense, and implement its features on top of a regular FreeBSD server?
