• Trouble tunneling my local Wordpress install to the mysql database on appfog

  I've set up a wordpress install on appfog (using rackspace), and cloned the install to my local machine for development. I know the install works (using MAMP) because I created a local mysql database and changed wp-config.php to point to it. However, I want to develop without having to change wp-config.php every time I commit. After doing some research, it seems like the Appfog service Caldecott lets me tunnel into the mysql database on the server, using af tunnel. Unfortunately, I'm having issues with getting it working. Even if I change my MAMP mysql port to something like 8889, and tunnel mysql through port 3306, it looks like it's connected but I still get "Error establishing a database connection" when loading my localhost Wordpress. When I quit the mysql monitor (using ctrl+x, ctrl+c), I get a message stating "Error: 'mysql' execution failed; is it in your $PATH?'. Originally, no, it wasn't, but I've fixed my PATH variable on my local machine so that when I go to Terminal and just type mysql, it loads up. So I guess my question is 2 parts: 1.)Am I going with the right approach for Wordpress development on my local machine and 2.)If so, why is the tunnel not working?

• MYSQL - SImple database design

  Hello guys, I would like to develop a system, where user will get the data dynamically(what I mean dynamic is, without reloading pages, using AJAX.. but well, it does not matter much). My situation is like this. I have this table, I called it "player", in this player table, I will store the player information like, player name, level, experience etc. Each player can have different clothes, start from tops(shirts), bottoms, shoes, and hairstyle, and each player can have more than 1 tops, bottoms, shoes etc. What I am hesitated or not very sure about is, how do you normally store the data? My current design is like this: Player Table =========================================================================================== id | name | (others player's info) | wearing | tops | bottoms =========================================================================================== 1 | player1 | | top=1;bottom=2;shoes=5;hair=8 | 1,2,3| 7,2,3 Tops Table ===================== id | name | etc... ===================== 1 | t-shirt | ... • [iPhone] Play video not in full screen mode

  Hello, First, excuse my english :) I've read on apple developer website that video playback provides by the framework supports only full screen mode. I will need to develop an application where video can be played in reduce screen mode. I've see that Orange TV make something which looks like what i need to do. http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1228/tvplayerorange.jpg The application is available on app store but you need to have a subscription to test this application. Whatever, to resume it, we can see video (tv stream video) in a reduce mode and if we click on the screen it switch to a full screen mode. So my question, what i want to do is possible (Orange TV made it) but i wonder the difficulty to make it. It seems that I have to make a video player. If it take a bunch of time, I tkink I will use Media Player Framework of iPhone even isn't the optimal solution for me. Feel free to ask me more details ;) Thank you for your answers.

• Tools for managing code deployment/versioning for IIS / Windows enviroments

  I've got a strong background in Linux and OSX, and just left a job where I was architecting systems based on those platforms. Now I've got a Windows Server running IIS that has a number of different websites that it hosts. Most of them are just a bunch of HTML, JS and Images, with some ASP for some customer tools. (Each website has a different set of customer tools, or they are the same tools, but with minor code changes between them.) I'm also adding a develop web server with the same code, but the 'bleeding edge' stuff. I need an effective way of managing changes and updates to the overall codebase (henceforth referring to both the images and the html and the asp, for all the sites). When a dev (or webmaster) checks in changes, I want it to show up automatically on the developer server, but should be manually pushed out to the live server. I'd be tempted to just make the websites SVN repositories, but I'd be concerned about the overhead of having the webdeveloper having to log into the server and trigger an SVN update via commandline/tortise (and heaven forbid, manage tags). Ideally I'd also manage IIS profile settings between the systems, but the major need is to be able to manage the process, and expose it to our ASP developer, and our webmaster, both of which are used to just FTPing up the files to the live site. So, any recommendations on tools (beyond some SVN hacking with BAT files + teaching the webmaster how to log into the server and do updates) or workflows that would help this out? I even considered an RPM type package (or some Windows equivalent, of course) to manage the live server, but that seems like a bit too much overhead. Thanks.

The funtion inturn calls new.rhtml which contains <% form_for(@product) do |f| % #all form elments declaration <% f.submit "Create" % <%= end % Here @product is initialized in the controller file and passed to this new.rhtml. So where does form_for(@product) gets the data? How does the control gets tranfered to create function in controller file when submit button is clicked? No where action is specified to the controller file. in the create function, wat does redirec_to(@product) specify where @product is an object received from the new.html file... I am very much confused on the basics of ROR. Somone pls help me clarify this. pardon me for making such a big post. I have lots of doubts in this single piece of code

• Dynamically change embedded video src in IE/Chrome (works in Firefox)

  I'm trying to dynamically change an embedded video on a page. It's working in Firefox but for some reason it's not working in IE and Chrome (strange combination). • Response time increasing (worsening) over time with consistent load

  Ok. I know I don't have a lot of information. That is, essentially, the reason for my question. I am building a game using Flash/Flex and Rails on the back-end. Communication between the two is via WebORB. Here is what is happening. When I start the client an operation calls the server every 60 seconds (not much, right?) which results in two database SELECTS and an UPDATE and a resulting response to the client. This repeats every 60 seconds. I deployed a test version on heroku and NewRelic's RPM told me that response time degraded over time. One client with one task every 60 seconds. Over several hours the response time drifted from 150ms to over 900ms in response time. I have been able to reproduce this in my development environment (my Macbook Pro) so it isn't a problem on Heroku's side. I am not doing anything sophisticated (by design) in the server app. An action gets called, gets some data from the database, performs an AR update and then returns a response. No caching, etc. Any thoughts? Anyone? I'd really appreciate it.

  Hi, My codeigniter project is in live. I have two copies of it. One in the root and another in a subfolder. Both are configered to work normal. The root copy if the one which was made after testing in a subfolder. While running from the a subfolder all worked well. But when copied to the root folder the default controller is loading for all requests. But were as in subfolders and in other servers it is working well. It is like the following A true copy in root folder like sitename.com and another true copy in a subfolder like sitename.com/abc when requesting like this sitename.com/gallery the default controller is loaded instead of gallery controller. • Which web solution should I use for my project?

  I'm going to create a fairly large (from my point of view anyway) web project with a friend. We will create a site with roads and other road related info. Our calculations is that we will have around 100k items in our database. Each item will contain some information like location, name etc. (about 30 thing each). We are counting on having a few hundred thousand unique visitors per month. The 100k items and their locations (that will be searchable) will be the main part of the page but we will also have some articles, comments, news and later on some more social functions (accounts, forums, picture uploads etc.). We were going to use Google AppEngine to develop our project since it is really scalable and free (at least for a while). But I'm actually starting to doubt that AppEngine is right for us. It seems to be for webbapps and not sites like ours. Which system (language/framework etc.) would you guys recommend us to use? It doesn't really mater if we know the language since before (we like learning new stuff) but it would be good if it's something that is future proof.

• How to "upgrade" the database in real world?

  My company have develop a web application using php + mysql. The system can display a product's original price and discount price to the user. If you haven't logined, you get the original price, if you loginned , you get the discount price. It is pretty easy to understand. But my company want more features in the system, it want to display different prices base on different user. For example, user A is a golden parnter, he can get 50% off. User B is a silver parnter, only have 30 % off. But this logic is not prepare in the original system, so I need to add some attribute in the database, at least a user type in this example. Is there any recommendation on how to merge current database to my new version of database. Also, all the data should preserver, and the server should works 24/7. (within stop the database) Is it possible to do so? Also , any recommend for future maintaince advice? Thz u.

• Add something to symbol in dynamicly loaded swf (ActionScript 3)

  I have a program written in Flash Builder with Flex 4.6 sdk and swf movie with some symbols inside. Those symbols moving around the stage. What I need is load that swf in my program and replace one of those symbols to my bitmap and show whole swf in flashContainer. • jQuery Fancy - popup window doesn't fully expand

• MySQL problem reconnecting (mysqld.exe) keeps giving error...

  Need some guidance figuring out what went wrong. I've been using mysql, phpmyadmin for just under a year on my home computer while I develop a webapp. 3 days ago I updated my windows vista with all the "wonderful" microsoft updates, security patches, etc...and now it's broke. I tried uninstalling all the upgrades, but there are 4 of them I can't unistall because microsoft says their "operating system" updates and can't be unistalled. My system is: windows vista, php 5+, mysql 5.1, Apache 2+. I can run my web app and it queries the database without any problems. However, when I run phpmyadmin to get into the database I get an error: "mysqld.exe has stopped working" and phpmyadmin crashes. I tried going to the command line for mysql to do a mysqldump to backup my database and it gives me an error "2013, could not connect to the server". If I restart the computer the webapp will work again. Basically, php can query the database, but if I try to get at the database through phpmyadmin, or the command prompt the mysqld.exe error occurs and blows mysql out. Any ideas what's going on here? Any ideas how to get around this to backup the db, so I can reinstall mysql?. I'm really lost where to start. I don't really know if the updates caused the problem, or if the 4 updates that can't be unistalled are really the problem. Any tips will be appreciated. thanks.

• iPhone: Same Rows Repeated in Each Section of Grouped UITableview

  I have an app that is a list of tasks, like a to do list. The user configures the tasks and that goes to the SQLite db. The list is displayed in a tableview. The SQL table in question consists of a taskid int, groupname varchar, taskname varchar, lastcompleted datetime, nextdue datetime, weighting integer. I currently have it working by creating an array from each column in the SQL table. In the tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: method, I create the controls for each task by binding their values to the array for each column. I want to add configurable task groups that should display as the section titles. I got the task groups to display as the section headers. My problem is that all the task rows are repeated in each group under each header. How do I get the correct rows to show up only under the correct section? I'm really new to development period and took on a hobby of trying to teach myself how to develop iphone apps. So, pretty please, be a little more detailed than you normally would with a professional developer. :)

• Taking wrong database configuration array

  Hi, I have one application in which i have used 2 database connections. In my database config file i have given two arrays as below. $active_group = ‘default’; $active_record = TRUE; FIRST ARRAY $db[‘default’][‘hostname’] = ‘hostname’; .............. .......... SECOND ARRAY $db[‘another_db’][‘hostname’] = ‘hostname’; .............. .......... this is working fine. Now, I copied the entire CI folder to develop another application in which only one database connection needed. So, now, in the database config file, i deleted the second configuration array. But, the db class is taking first application’s second array i.e. “another_db” and it is giving the below error. “You have specified an invalid database connection group.” When i change the default (only one) array name to “another_db” in configuration file. It is working fine. Can’t understand from where it is taking the group name as “another_db”. My application autoloads database library. I have debugged the ci_auto_loader in Loader.php class where it calls $this-database() function with no parameters. But in function database($params, $, $) {}, if I echo $params it shows “another_db”.

• C# Timer -- measuring time slower

  I'm writing a code where: I.) The user adds "events" during run-time. (To a flowlayoutpanel) These events are turning some LEDs on/off, after "x" time has elapsed and the LED-turning functions are written in a Led-function.cs class. i.e: 1) Turn left led on After 3500ms 2) Turn right led on After 4000ms II.) When the user hits start a timer starts. // Create timer. System.Timers.Timer _timer; _timer = new System.Timers.Timer(); _timer.Interval = (1); _timer.Elapsed += (sender, e) => { HandleTimerElapsed(LedObject, device, _timer); }; _timer.Start(); III.) The timer's tick event is raised every millisecond and checks if the user definied time has ellapsed. Im measuring the elapsed time with adding +1 to an integer at every tick event. (NumberOfTicks++;) //Timer Handle private void HandleTimerElapsed(Led_Functions LedObject, string device, System.Timers.Timer _timer) { NumberOfTicks++; if (NumberOfTicks >= Start_time[0]) { LedObject.LeftLED_ONnobutton(device); } } IV.) What I noticed was that when the tick was set to 1. (So the tick event is raised every millisecond) Even if I set 3000ms to the evet the LED actually flashed around 6 seconds. When the tick was set to 100. (So every 0,1s) then the flash was more accurate (3,5sec or so). Any Ideas why im having this delay in time? Or do you have any ideas how could I implement it better? I have 2 models and 2 controllers – Products and Reviews with 'Products' hasMany 'Reviews' relationship, the review form will be displayed on the current product page (Products controller, 'view' action), and this form will be use another controller (Reviews). Also I need validation with validation errors being displayed for this form. Review saves, but I don't get validation errors, and I can't add 'if ($this->Review->save($this->request->data);) { //... } because it will break this action (missed view error). My question is how to properly deal with this situation to achieve functionality that I need? Should I use elements with request action or I should move adding reviews to the ProductsController?

• Storing large numbers of varying size objects on disk

  I need to develop a system for storing large numbers (10's to 100's of thousands) of objects. Each object is email-like - there is a main text body, and several ancillary text fields of limited size. A body will be from a few bytes, to several KB in size. Each item will have a single unique ID (probably a GUID) that identifies it. The store will only be written to when an object is added to it. It will be read often. Deletions will be rare. The data is almost all human readable text so it will be readily compressible. A system that lets me issue the I/Os and mange the memory and caching would be ideal. I'm going to keep the indexes in memory, using it to map indexes to the single (and primary) key for the objects. Once I have the key, then I'll load it from disk, or the cache. The data management system needs to be part of my application - I do not want to depend on OS services. Or separately installed packages. Native (C++) would be best, but a manged (C#) thing would be ok. I believe that a database is an obvious choice, but this needs to be super-fast for look up and loading into memory of an object. I am not experienced with data base tech and I'm concerned that general relational systems will not handle all this variable sized data efficiently. (Note, this has nothing to do with my job - its a personal project.) In your experience, what are the viable alternatives to a traditional relational DB? Or would a DB work well for this?

• Determining Best Table Structure for MySQL Performance

  I'm working on a browser-based RPG for one of my websites, and right now I'm trying to determine the best way to organize my SQL tables for performance and maintenance. Here's my question: Does the number of columns in an SQL table affect the speed in which it can be queried? I am not a newbie when it comes to PHP or MySQL. I used to develop things with the common goal of getting them to work, but I've recently advanced to the stage where a functional program is not good enough unless it's fast and reliable. Anyways, right now I have a members table that has around 15 columns. It contains information such as the player's username, password, email, logins, page views, etcetera. It doesn't contain any information on the player's progress in the game, however. If I added columns for things such as army size, gold, turns, and whatnot, then it could easily rise to around 40 or 50 total columns. Oh, and my database structure IS normalized. Will a table with 50 columns that gets constantly queried be a bad idea? Should I split it into two tables; one for the user's general information and one for the user's game statistics? I know I could check the query time myself, but I haven't actually created the tables yet and I think I'd be better off with some professional advice on this important decision for my game. • REST design: what verb and resource name to use for a filtering service

  I am developing a cleanup/filtering service that has a method that receives a list of objects serialized in xml, and apply some filtering rules to return a subset of those objects. In a REST-ful service, what verb shall I use for such a method? I thought that GET is a natural choice, but I have to put the serialized XML in the body of the request which works but feels incorrect. The other verbs don't seem to fit semantically. What is a good way to define that Service interface? Naming the resource /Cleanup or /Filter seems weird mainly because in the examples I see online, it is always a name rather than a verb being used for resource name. Am I right to feel that REST services are better suited for CRUD operations and you start bending the rules in situations like this service? If yes, am I then making a wrong architectural choice. I've pushed to develop this service in REST-ful style (as opposed to SOAP) for simplicity, but such awkward cases happen a lot and make me feel like I am missing something. Either choosing REST where it shouldn't be used or may be over-thinking some stuff that doesn't really matter? In that case, what really matters?

• Web service failing when installed in seperate project from the website...

  I am totally new to web services and cannot get mine to work. My setup is on VS 2008 using IIS. I have one solution file with 3 projects in it: website, code, and services. If I put my webservice into my website and call it locally then it will work fine (it's just a hello world web service). I want to put the service into a different location for use from multiple sites. I don't know what I'm doing wrong - i've read so much conflicting info regarding disco files, access files, silverlight, flash, java, etc. I just looking for quick simple steps to create a web service that I can access from javascript and deploy to a seperate website. End goal is to have functionality in webservices so that website will call via JS and run much smoother in the loading time and async calls. Do I need to create a disco file? Do I need to configure security? -- I know this is prob best, i'm just looking to get it working at all. Do I need to allow cross browser access on IIS or on my hosted server? Are there any quick reference websites that you can recommend? Should I be using WCF as new technology? - I saw this on MSDN but seems to be more for windows apps then web apps. I'm not getting any specific error codes. I have installed the firefox debugging tools (firebug) and I can see what the headers are but I don't know how to interpret them and there is no response being passed back. Any help is appreciated!!!

  I have a form at the bottom of a long page, if a user fills out the form but it doesn't validate the page is reloaded in the typical codeigniter fashion: $this->load->view('template',$data); however because the form is way down at the bottom of the page I need the page to load down there like you do with HTML anchors. Does anyone know how to do this in codeigniter? I can't use the codeigniter redirect(); function because it loses the object and the validation errors are gone. Other frameworks I've used like Yii you can call the redirect function like: $this->redirect(); which solves the problem because you keep the object. I've tried using: $this->index() within the controller which works fine as a redirect but the validation errors are in another method which is where the current page is loaded from: $this->item($labs) but when I use this it get stuck in a loop Any ideas? I've seen this question a lot on the net but no clear answers. I'm researching using codeigniter "flash data" but think it's a bit overkill. cheers.

I know that I'll be able to run the program if I add static infront of the methods but I'm wondering why I need it (I think it's because Main is static?) and what do I need to change in order to use these methods without adding static to them?
