• CPU consumption of my process

  Hi all I would like to use Performance Monitor to check the CPU consumption of my process. Right now I am working on a MultiCore machine. If I have a look at my process in TASK MANAGER I see that my process consumes 20% of CPU. If I start performance monitor, I select Process--% Processor Time I see values peaking up and over 100%. Do you know why and how to get the real measure? I also looked at the CPU consumption for all of my 4 cores, but I don't know exactly how to attribute consumption to my process. If you can suggest a link or url about how to read CPU usage I would really appreciate! Thanks a lot! AFG

• Best practices for organizing .NET P/Invoke code to Win32 APIs

  I am refactoring a large and complicated code base in .NET that makes heavy use of P/Invoke to Win32 APIs. The structure of the project is not the greatest and I am finding DllImport statements all over the place, very often duplicated for the same function, and also declared in a variety of ways: The import directives and methods are sometimes declared as public, sometimes private, sometimes as static and sometimes as instance methods. My worry is that refactoring may have unintended consequences but this might be unavoidable. Are there documented best practices I can follow that can help me out? My instict is to organize a static/shared Win32 P/Invoke API class that lists all of these methods and associated constants in one file... (The code base is made up of over 20 projects with a lot of windows message passing and cross-thread calls. It's also a VB.NET project upgraded from VB6 if that makes a difference.)

Tt worked well ;) So now I was thinking I should install Rails 3.. but no, no!.. it says.. $ sudo gem install rails --pre ERROR:   Error installing rails:                  activesupport requires Ruby version = 1.8.7. So what can I do? I have 1.8.7 !

• Android: No icon for Notification

  Hello, I wanted to create a notification without the icon in the status bar (the state that is not expanded). I tried the custom expanded view and set the icon for this view only. But it did not work. When I give 0 as icon to the constructor, the icon disappears but notification also does not appear in the expanded view. Notification notification = new Notification(0, "", 0); I tried a lot of combinations but didn't come out with a solution. By the way, I know it is working because I saw this feature in some apps.   I've just taken on a new Asp.Net MVC application and after opening it up I find the following, [Project].Web [Project].Models [Project].BLL [Project].DAL Now, something thats become clear is that there is the data has to do a hell of a lot before it makes it to the View (DatabaseDALRepoBLLConvertToModelControllerView). The DAL is Subsonic, the repositorys in the DAL return the subsonic entities to the BLL which process them does crazy things and converts them into a Model (From the .Models) sometimes with classes that look like this public DataModel GetDataModel(EntityObject Src) { var ReturnData = new DataModel(): ReturnData.ID = Src.ID; ReturnDate.Name = Src.Name; //etc etc } Now, the question is, "Is this complete overkill"? Ok the project is of a decent size and can only get bigger but is it worth carrying on with all this? I dont want to use AutoMapper as it just seems like it makes the complication worse. Can anyone shed any light on this?

  Using scons I can easily set my include paths: env.Append( CPPPATH=['foo'] ) This passes the flag -Ifoo to gcc However I'm trying to compile with a lot of warnings enabled. In particular with env.Append( CPPFLAGS=['-Werror', '-Wall', '-Wextra'] ) which dies horribly on certain boost includes ... I can fix this by adding the boost includes to the system include path rather than the include path as gcc treats system includes differently. So what I need to get passed to gcc instead of -Ifoo is -isystem foo I guess I could do this with the CPPFLAGS variable, but was wondering if there was a better solution built into scons.

  I am researching a lot on intraweb, I read that in Intraweb XII (when will this be released?) it will be possible to have: 1) "silverlight enabled controls" (mentioned here, this is the old IW XI roadmap anyway silverlight task has been moved to XII now) 2) "IntraWeb XII [...] will contain the integration with CrossTalk and ASP.NET" (mentioned here, check for Intraweb XII paragraph). Now I don't understand what this mean in detail. I think IW is very cool, but it lacks a good choice of components, there is only one vendor (TMS) that makes good components, but of course one can wonder "why to be limited to one vendor when I can use more components from more vendors"? So does anyone (ideally from IW team, or that really knows the inner workings of IW XII, I mean the details of the roadmap, since XII is not being developed yet) know what the bold sentences above mean? Will this mean I can use inside IW 3rd party components from any ASP.NET and Silverlight vendor like Telerik, DevExpress, ComponentOne, and many, many, more?

However, when users from other offices (separate network, with firewall open) they get a password request input box. Why are they getting the password dialogue? What is the recommended way identify users of the app? I want to avoid using password, but windows identities. Anyone attempting to access the application is inside a trusted network.   Hello all, I have some data that I would like to save to a MAT file (version 4 or 5, or any version, for that matter). The catch: I wanted to do this without using matlab libraries, since this code will not necessary run in a machine with matlab. My program uses Java and C++, so any existing library in those languages that achieves this could help me out... I did some research but did not find anything in Java/C++. However, I found that scipy on python achieves this with mio4.py or mio5.py. I thought about implementing this on java or C++, but it seems a bit out of my time schedule. So the question is: is there any libraries in Java or C/C++ that permits saving MAT files without using Matlab libraries? Thanks a lot

  Hi, I'm trying to learn some aspects of the CH ( chomsky hierarchy ) which are related to PL ( programming languages ), and i still have to read the Dragon Book. I've read that most of the PL can be parsed as CFG ( context free grammar ). In term of computational power, it equals the one of a pushdown non deterministic automaton. Am I right ? If it's true, then how could a CFG holds a UG ( unrestricted grammar, which is turing complete ) ? I'm asking because, even if PL are CFG they are actually used to describe TM (turing machines ) and through UG. I think that's because of at least two different levels of computing, the first, which is the parsing of a CFG focuses on the syntax related to the structure ( representation ? ) of the language, while the other focuses on the semantic ( sense, interpretation of the data itself ? ) related to the capabilities of the pl which is turing complete. Again, are these assumptions rights ? thanx a lot.

• How to disable scrolling the document body?

  I have a HTML which has lot of content and a vertical scrollbar appears as soon as the HTML is loaded. Now from this HTML a full screen IFRAME is loaded. The problem is when the IFRAME is loaded, the parent scrollbar still persists, I want to disable the scrollbar when the Iframe is loaded. I tried: document.body.scroll = "no", it did not work with FF and chrome. document.style.overflow = "hidden"; after this I was still able to scroll, and the whole iframe would scroll up revealing the parent HTML. My requirement is, when the IFRAME is loaded, we should never be able to scroll the entire IFRAME if the parent HTML has a scrollbar. Any ideas?

  Hello - I'm looking for some feedback, blog links, etc that offer some tips and tricks for iPhone GPS development. I've read and understand the API, I have my demo app up and running, etc but I have run into some "quirks" with gps on iphone. For example, it seems that you you will receive a lot less location updates when your iphone enters "power save" mode. I've read that you can combat this by playing music in your application [not sure if this is true]. It also seems that, terms of making a reasonable pedometer, you should filter out any reading with horizontal accuracies less than 20 meters. Does this sound right? Is there any kind of checklist out on the web for iphone gps gotchas? Thanks in advance.

• I never really understood: what is CGI?

  CGI is a Comman Gateway Interface. As the name says, it is a "common" gateway interface for everything. It is so trivial and naive from the name. I feel that I understood this and I felt this every time I encountered this word. But frankly, I didn't. I'm still confused. I am a PHP programmer. I did lot of web development. user (client) request for page --- webserver(-embedded PHP interpreter) ---- Server side(PHP) Script --- MySQL Server. Now say my PHP Script can fetch results from MySQL Server && MATLAB Server && Some other server. So, now PHP Script is the CGI? because its interface for the between webserver & All other servers? I don't know. Sometimes they call CGI, a technology & othertimes they call CGI a program or someother server. What exactly is CGI? Whats the big deal with /cgi-bin/*.cgi? Whats up with this? I don't know what is this cgi-bin directory on the server for. I don't know why they have *.cgi extensions. Why does Perl always comes in the way. CGI & Perl (language). I also don't know whats up with these two. Almost all the time I keep hearing these two in combination "CGI & Perl". This book is another great example CGI Programming with Perl Why not "CGI Programming with PHP/JSP/ASP". I never saw such things. CGI Programming in C this confuses me a lot. in C?? Seriously?? I don't know what to say. I"m just confused. "in C"?? This changes everything. Program needs to be compiled and executed. This entirely changes my view of web programming. When do I compile? How does the program gets executed (because it will be a machine code, so it must execute as a independent process). How does it communicate with the web server? IPC? and interfacing with all the servers (in my example MATLAB & MySQL) using socket programming? I'm lost!! They say that CGI is depreciated. Its no more in use. Is it so? What is its latest update? Once, I ran into a situation where I had to give HTTP PUT request access to web server (Apache HTTPD). Its a long back. So, as far as I remember this is what I did: Edited the configuration file of Apache HTTPD to tell webserver to pass all HTTP PUT requests to some put.php ( I had to write this PHP script) Implement put.php to handle the request (save the file to the location mentioned) People said that I wrote a CGI Script. Seriously, I didn't have clue what they were talking about. Did I really write CGI Script? I hope you understood what my confusion is. (Because I myself don't know where I'm confused). I request you guys to keep your answer as simple as possible. I really can't understand any fancy technical terminology. At least not in this case. EDIT: I found this amazing tutorial "CGI Programming Is Simple!" - CGI Tutorial Which explains the concepts in simplest possible way. I've only have one complaint about this tutorial. Just to make what ever he explained complete he should have shown the C code he used for generating response for those GET / POST requests. • Python and App Engine project structure

  Hello, I am relatively new to python and app engine, and I just finished my first project. It consists of several *.py files (usually py file for every page on the site) and respectively temple files for each py file. In addition, I have one big PY file that has many functions that are common to a lot of pages, in I also declared the classes of db.Model (that is the datastore kinds). My question is what is the convention (if there is one) of arranging these files. If I create a model.py with the datastore classes, should it be in different package? Where should I put my template files and all of the py files that handle every page (should they be in the same directory as the one big common PY file)? I have tried to look for MVC and such implementations online but there are very few. Thanks, Joel

• SVN problems after migration with CVS2SVN

  We´ve migrated from CVS on AIX to SVN on Linux via CVS2SVN. The migration seems to have went well but when working in SVN we get a lot of Tree Conflicts that doesn´t seem to be conflicts at all? Looking at the revision graphs, one can see that the graph for e.g. trunk and a branch isn´t the same, i.e. they contain different sets of revisions of the file. Either of the 3 ways to resolve this conflict when merging in TortoiseSVN leaves the revision graphs separate, they cannot be "melted" together. Could it be that CVS2SVN didn´t understand that a file in different branches is the same even if the file system path is the same? Anyone who has experienced this? Thanks, Bjorn

• 100% width bg images not extending on horizontal scroll

  I'm noticing this issue. I made a quick screen capture to demonstrate: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/904456/2010-06-14_2323.swf Basically when you have a min-width set and the viewport goes under that constraint, a horizontal scroll bar appears. Pretty much what you would expect, but when you scroll over horizontally all elements that are suppose to extend across the entire width of the page and have background images/colors different from the body do not extend. If you resize the viewport it seems to catch up. Is this a known issue? You can see it on a lot of sites, http://gowalla.com for example. Any ideas?

• Problem with Japanese/International Characters with IIS7 URL Rewrite

  I have a friend with a Japanese blog, using wordpress, he has the pretty url. Basically domain.com/postname. Well an example of a url might be. "domain.com/???". His blog is hosted on an Apache web server. I am running IIS7 and am trying to get my Japanese blog going like it should, and have "domain.com/???" show just that one post when you visit that url. My thinking is it has something to do with url-encoding. I can't find too much information on utf-8 or anything about getting international characters to work in a url. Any help on this would be great. I am thinking I should change something in the web.config file, but not to sure. I haven't had a lot of experience with IIS7. Thanks.
