• What kind of server configuration is best for a chatting app? [closed]

  I'm just now starting to go deeper into the world of cloud hosting and databases, and am getting overwhelmed by how deep this information goes. It's all a little too much to consume in a short amount of time. I get a lot of pricing information, but I'm unable to determine what that means to me. I'm making what you might compare to an email app. Users can send messages to one another. I just don't understand, out of the several options, what would be ideal for an app like this, where users would be constantly sending and receiving text data. With Amazon DynamoDB, I have to specify a pre-defined throughput with number of reads and writes per second. Sure I can just type 50, but I'm not exactly sure what 50 writes per second represents. I'm trying to determine what would be the most cost efficient solution, and I want to know what a throughput of 50 reads/writes/second compares to. Is that a high number? What is a good throughput number for a message sending app with say 50,000 daily users? I'm just providing specific numbers so I can understand what these throughput numbers represent. 100 transactions/second to me seems like a small number since I'm not familiar with this stuff, so I'm just looking to bring everything in context. What would 100 read/write/second be useful for? Are there any average example values available? And I'm not sure what each service is good for. For a message sending app, is there any reason I'd want to choose say Amazon DynamoDB over Google App Engine? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

• Why are SIP calls via my server silent?

  I have FreeSWITCH SIP server up and running. It has public IP and sits behind 1-to-1 NAT (it's Amazon EC2 instance actually). I can connect to it, make a call to other endpoint (namely, my android device to my pc and vice versa) and signals are send with no problems (call, answer, hangup, etc). Unfortunately, and what drives me crazy, that's all: no audio gets through, no video either. Server does not throw errors, it reports many retransmission though, looks like this: switch_rtp.c:915 [ zrtp engine]: WARNING! HELLO Max retransmissions count reached (20 retries). ID=15 Codecs are set up correctly (same config worked locally on my LAN). NAT/firewall on client side may be a problem, signals do get through (perhaps due to fixed port, data streaming runs on random one, that is currently my best bet). STUN/TURN/ICE setting on client seem to have no effect. Endpoints sit behind symmetric NAT. On server there are no iptables rules, security group is set as suggested there: http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Firewall Help, please. How to make it work or at least diagnose what's wrong?

  On a busy mysql server MySQLTuner 1.2.0 always recommends to add query_cache_size no matter how I increase the value (I tried up to 512MB). • NFS on top of GFS2 - does it work?

  We're currently using a NoSQL derivative called Splunk to receive our data. The software supports something called "search head pooling" in which the job-dispatching engine is housed on several servers which share a common storage point. Originally our intention was to use a clustered filesystem like GFS2 because of low latency, stability, and ease of setup. We set up GFS2, and it's working with no issues. However when trying to run the software, it's trying to create lock files, and a bunch of other things that their support team can't quite explain. Ultimate feedback from them was that they only support NFS. Our network administration team heavily frowns on NFS (lack of stability, file lock issues, etc). So, I was thinking about the possibility of setting up NFS on each server in the cluster to act as a wedge layer between the GFS2 filesystem and the software. Basically configure each server to export the GFS2 filesystem's mountpoint via NFS, and then tell each server to connect to that NFS share. That way we aren't introducing any single-points-of-failure should a dedicated NFS server go down, but the vendor gets their "required" NFS share. I'm just brainstorming ways around, so please tear this apart :)

• Nginx settings are screwing up my Drupal form submissions, how do I fix?

  How do I tell Nginx to "ignore" specific URLS or pages on my web site? I run a Drupal site where anonymous visitors get served via NGINX while logged in users get served via Apache. We do this to keep the load down and scale better. It works great, except, since we set up nginx, a good number of Drupal forms no longer work. For example, before installing Nginx, if you created a new article, then clicked "edit" and edited the article. You could click "save" and your changes to the article would be saved. After setting up nginx, when you make edits and then click "save," the page simple refreshes, but now with "nginx-index.php" inserted into the URL. And your changes to the form were not actually saved to the database. So if you go to edit an article, you'll be on domain.com/node/##/edit or something like that. When you try to save your changes to the form, you'll wind up at domain.com/nginx-index.php?q=node/##/edit. And your changes will not be saved. There is a way around this, but only for administrative users. If you go to a form where this problem is happening, then comment or comment-out three lines in our settings.php file, the form will save properly. Those three lines are: // 'cache_form' = array( // 'engine' = 'db', // ), If they're commented, you uncomment them, them save the form. If they're uncommented, you comment them out and save the form. Obviously, this sucks. My friend who set up our server (and then left the country) told me that there are some Nginx settings that can tell it to "ignore" certain URLs or pages which could work here. How do I do this and where do I do it?

• Mysql start fails with Operating System error 13

  I have XAMPP on my Ubuntu Lucid system and everything worked fine. But there seems to be some problem now and mysql wouldn't start. I had tried to recover a few Drupal databases and hence copied the raw files to /opt/lampp/var/mysql folder like all other database folders. And, I guess that could have caused the problem. I am pasting the last few lines of the error log. • Mysql: create index on 1.4 billion records

  I have a table with 1.4 billion records. The table structure is as follows: CREATE TABLE text_page ( text VARCHAR(255), page_id INT UNSIGNED ) ENGINE=MYISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=ascii The requirement is to create an index over the column text. The table size is about 34G. I have tried to create the index by the following statement: ALTER TABLE text_page ADD KEY ix_text (text) After 10 hours' waiting I finally give up this approach. Is there any workable solution on this problem? UPDATE: the table is unlikely to be updated or inserted or deleted. The reason why to create index on the column text is because this kind of sql query would be frequently executed: SELECT page_id FROM text_page WHERE text = ? UPDATE: I have solved the problem by partitioning the table. The table is partitioned into 40 pieces on column text. Then creating index on the table takes about 1 hours to complete. It seems that MySQL index creation becomes very slow when the table size becomes very big. And partitioning reduces the table into smaller trunks.

Nevertheless in your application data, Chrome keeps your entire browsing history in SQLite database files, with the file naming scheme of "History Index YYYY-MM". I am looking for a way to search… …through my entire browsing history, …with sophisticated filters (limit search terms to certain fields such as URL, domain, title, body text; wildcard or regex terms, date ranges). … in … …either some ready-made software. eHistory came close, as it can limit terms to fields, but it lacks wildcards/regexes, and has the same limited time horizon as the default search. Beyond that, I could not find any suited Chrome extension or standalone (Mac) app. …or a command line to join multiple SQLite database files into one database, which I can then query (with the full syntax power). • MySQL InnoDB/socket issue on Mac OS X 10.6.4

  I have an ongoing issue on my Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.4. Intermittently, my MySQL install will not create a socket on startup. Rebooting sometimes, but not always, solves the problem. Deleting the ib* files in /usr/local/mysql/data and then restarting sometimes, but not always, solves the problem. My error logs tell me the following: Plugin InnoDB init function returned error Plugin InnoDB registration as a STORAGE ENGINE failed Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port: Address already in use Do you already have another mysqld server running on port: 3306? Aborting It then appears to attempt to start again and generates this error 20 - 30 times: Unable to lock ./ibdata1, error 35 Check that you do not already have another mysqld process using the same InnoDB data or log files Though the socket file is not created, I can connect to my MySQL db directly over localhost. Although, this does not help me from a PHP standpoint. Any thoughts on what I can do to resolve the issue or debug further? I'm at a loss as to where to go from here.

• Java process eating CPU; Why?

  I have a Linux server which I have installed Java on. Sometimes, and only sometimes when a large nr of visitors visit my website, the site hangs. When I open the terminal and enter the "top" command to see whats going on, I can see that "Java" process is eating CPU! Like 400%. I have also tried ps aux command, and can see that the command is from usr/bin/java I have little experience in troubleshooting this kind of things, so I turn to you guys for help. I have a java container installed (Jetty) which I must have in order to use SOLR (search engine) which is integrated into my website. I can start and stop SOLR by: etc/init.d/solr stop But this didn't remove the java process from the "Top" command. Still java was eating 400% CPU. Is there other methods to restart java only? This has happened twice to me, and each time I have now restarted my entire servers and everithing is fine. If you need more input let me know! Thanks

• Trac vs. Redmine vs. JIRA vs. FogBugz for one-man shop?

  Background I am a one-man freelancer looking for a project management software that can provide the following requirements. I have used Trac for about a year now. Tried Redmine and FogBugz on Demand for a couple of weeks. Never tried JIRA before. Basically, I'm looking for a piece of software that: Facilitates developer-client communication/collaboration Does time tracking Requirements Record time estimates/Time tracking Clients must be able to create/edit his own tickets/cases Clients must not see Developer created tickets/cases (internal) Affordable (price) with multiple clients Nice-to-haves Supports multiple projects in one installation Free eclipse integration (Mylyn) Easy time-tracking without using the Web UI (Trac's post commit hook or Redmine's commit message scanning) Clients can access the Wiki Export the data to standard formats My evaluation Trac can basically fulfill most of the above requirements, but with lots of customizations and plug-ins that it doesn't feel so clean. One downside is that the main trunk (0.11) has been around for a year or more and I still haven't seen much tendency of any upgrades coming up. Redmine has the cleanest Web UI. It's design philosophy seems to be the most elegant, with its innovative commit message scanning and stuff. However, the current version doesn't seem to be very mature and stable yet. It doesn't support internal (private) tickets and the time-tracking commit message patch doesn't support the trunk version. The good thing about it is that the main trunk still seems to be actively developed. FogBugz is actually a very well written piece of software. However the idea of paying $25/month for the client to be able to log-in to the system seems a little bit too far off for an individual developer. The free version supports letting clients create/view their own cases using email, which is a sub-optimal alternative to having a full-fledged list of the user's own cases. That also means clients can't read/write wiki pages. Its time-tracking approach is innovative and good though. However the fact that all the eclipse integration (Bugclipse, Foglyn) are commercial. Yet other investments before I can use my bug-tracker! If I revert back to the Web UI, it's not really a fast rendering Web service. Also, the in-built report functions are excellent (e.g. evidence based scheduling) JIRA is something I have zero experience with. Can someone with JIRA experience recommend why it might be a good fit for this particular situation? Question Can we share experience on this? Any specific plugins/customizations would that would best suit the requirements for this case?

• An offscreen MKMapView behaves differently in 3.2, 4.0

  In 3.1 I've been using an "offscreen" MKMapView to create map images that I can rotate, crop and so forth before presenting them the user. In 3.2 and 4.0 this technique no longer works quite right. This no longer works in 3.2, 4.0. The only thing I have found would trigger the load is to temporarily add the map to the view (i.e. make it visible). The problem being that the map only renders to the visible area of the screen, plus a little padding. The frame/bounds are fine, but it appears to be "helpfully" optimizes the loading to limit the tiles to those visible on the screen or close to it. Any ideas how to force the map to load at full size? Anyone else have this issue?

• SSRS Report from Oracle DB - Use stored procedure

  I am developing a report in Sql Server Reporting Services 2005, connecting to an Oracle 11g database. As you post replies perhaps it will help to know that I'm skilled in MSSQL Server and inexperienced in Oracle. I have multiple nested subreports and need to use summary data in outer reports and the same data but in detail in the inner reports. In order to spare the DB server from multiple executions, I thought to populate some temp tables at the beginning and then query just them the multiple times in the report and the subreports. In SSRS, Datasets are evidently executed in the order they appear in the RDL file. And you can have a dataset that doesn't return a rowset. So I created a stored procedure to populate my four temp tables and made this the first Dataset in my report. This SP works when I run it from SQLDeveloper and I can query the data from the temp tables. However, this didn't appear to work out because SSRS was apparently not reusing the same session, so even though the global temporary tables were created with ON COMMIT PRESERVE ROWS my Datasets were empty. I switched to using "real" tables and am now passing in an additional parameter, a GUID in string form, uniquely generated on each new execution, that is part of the primary key of each table, so I can get back just the rows for this execution. Running this from Sql Developer works fine, example: DECLARE ActivityCode varchar2(15) := '1208-0916 '; ExecutionID varchar2(32) := SYS_GUID(); BEGIN CIPProjectBudget (ActivityCode, ExecutionID); END; Never mind that in this example I don't know the GUID, this simply proves it works because rows are inserted to my four tables. But in the SSRS report, I'm still getting no rows in my Datasets and SQL Developer confirms no rows are being inserted. So I'm thinking along the lines of: Oracle uses implicit transactions and my changes aren't getting committed? Even though I can prove that the non-rowset returning SP is executing (because if I leave out the parameter mapping it complains at report rendering time about not having enough parameters) perhaps it's not really executing. Somehow. Wrong execution order isn't the problem or rows would appear in the tables, and they aren't. I'm interested in any ideas about how to accomplish this (especially the part about not running the main queries multiple times). I'll redesign my whole report. I'll stop using a stored procedure. Suggest anything you like! I just need help getting this working and I am stuck. If you want more details, in my SSRS report I have a List object (it's a container that repeats once for each row in a Dataset) that has some header values and then contains a subreport. Eventually, there will be four total reports: one main report, with three nested subreports. Each subreport will be in a List on the parent report.

• Wildcard mapping in IIS 7.0 not working

  I can't seem to get the ASP.NET engine to handle ALL wildcard mapping. When I try to make a request that is supposed to be handled by the asp.net engine, i get a 404 error from the StaticFile handler Here is the content of my web.config file. • Bugs in Excel's ActiveX combo boxes?

  I have noticed that I get all sorts of annoying errors when: I have ActiveX comboboxes on a worksheet (not an excel form) The comboboxes have event code linked to them (eg, onchange events) I use their listfillrange or linkedcell properties (clearing these properties seems to alleviate a lot of problems) (Not sure if this is connected) but there is data validation on the targeted linkedcell. I program a fairly complex excel application that does a ton of event handling and uses a lot of controls. Over the months, I have been trying to deal with a variety of bugs dealing with those combo boxes. I can't recall all the details of each instance now, but these bugs tend to involve pointing the listfillrange and linkedcell properties at named ranges, and often have to do with the combo box events triggering at inappropriate times (such as when application.enableevents = false). These problems seemed to grow bigger in Excel 2007, so that I had to give up on these combo boxes entirely (I now use combo boxes contained in user forms, rather than directly on the sheets). Has anyone else seen similar problems? If so, was there a graceful solution? I have looked around with Google and so far haven't spotted anyone with similar issues. Some of the symptoms I end up seeing are: Excel crashing when I start up (involves combobox_onchange, listfillrange-named range on another different sheet, and workbook_open interactions). (note, I also had some data validation on the the linked cells in case a user edited them directly.) Excel rendering bugs (usually when the combo box changes, some cells from another sheet get randomly drawn over the top of the current sheet) Sometimes it involves the screen flashing entirely to another sheet for a moment. Excel losing its mind (or rather, the call stack) (related to the first bullet point). Sometimes when a function modifies a property of the comboboxes, the combobox onchange event fires, but it never returns control to the function that caused the change in the first place. The combobox_onchange events are triggered even when application.enableevents = false. Events firing when they shouldn't (I posted another question on stack overflow related to this). At this point, I am fairly convinced that ActiveX comboboxes are evil incarnate and not worth the trouble. I have switched to including these comboboxes inside a userform module instead. I would rather inconvenience users with popup forms than random visual artifacts and crashing (with data loss).

• Difference in css-positioning in windows and linux

  I have a problem with rendering my html page by the same browsers in different OS. There are 3 spans and position of each span is corrected through css(position:relative). But I have found out that the page that looks correct in firefox under Linux, shows not right at the same firefox(3.5.7) under Windows OS. Linux(Left - How it should be)/Windows(right): link text And the same with other browsers. What is the cause of this problem and how is possible to solve it.   I've pulled in the tree2 component (from Tomahawk 1.1.9). Had used the simpler Tree component on previous projects, and this one just looks a bit nicer. Running on websphere 6.1.x and set the server side flag that's needed (com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.invokefilterscompatibility=true) and set the extensionfilter accordingly. Everything's good, and works as expected. Here's the issue: - on a page being included on this one (just some typical footer type info with NO myfaces widgets), there's some embedded html that's getting flagged with warnings in the systemout console). These look like org.apache.myfaces.renderkit.html.util.ReducedHTMLParser parse Invalid tag found: unexpected input while looking for attr name or '/' at line 475. Surroundings: 'a id="tile:footr:viewFragment'. The problem isn't necessarily with the html (which should be cleaned up regardless :-). IF I don't include myfaces, I don't get these warning messages with the default ibm jsf renderer (using jsf 1.1 still). Obviously, IBM's implementation is a bit more lax than myFaces. The page has nothing to do with myfaces at all. The reason for needing the extension filter is that it needs (for the Tree2 anyways, I know it does more for file upload) to intercept requests and then stick some .js includes on the page. Investigated this a bit, and I've included this filter in my web.xml, but it is NO longer fronting the faces servlet. So, the filter is instantiated at startup, but is never executed. Since the filter isn't in place, I've had to hard code in the includes for the 2 .js files into my page Now, the tree2 gets rendered properly, AND I'm not getting the warnings from above, because with the extentionfilter not being called, its using the IBM renderkit ;-) I'm a bit concerned that when the extension filter is in place, everything is being rendered by myFaces, rather than IBM's renderkit (i.e. All I want is myfaces/tomahawk to render the tree2 only, and let the ri do everything else) Can anyone confirm this? When you use myfaces/tomahawk, is it doing all the rendering for the whole application, or just the page any tomahawk widget is on? Thanks for any thoughts on this mike

  Hi, I have been busy creating an app for Red5. Imagine what was my surprise when I tried to configure basic/digest authentication and I couldn't. What struck me as strange is that I have a running tomcat instance that works and authenticates correctly with the following xmls: web.xml (part of) <security-constraint> <web-resource-collection> <web-resource-name>A Protected Page</web-resource-name> <url-pattern>/stats.jsp</url-pattern> </web-resource-collection> <auth-constraint> <description/> <role-name>tomcat</role-name> </auth-constraint> </security-constraint> <login-config> <auth-method>DIGEST</auth-method> <realm-name>BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA</realm-name> </login-config> <security-role> <description/> <role-name>tomcat</role-name> </security-role> and a tomcat-users.xml in /conf that looks kinda like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <tomcat-users> <role rolename="tomcat"/> <user username="ide" password="bogus" roles="tomcat"/> </tomcat-users> The annoying thing is that configuration authenticates correctly when on tomcat's servlet container, but on the red5's modified one, it just keeps asking for authentication. Am I becoming mad or it should work like a charm? Red5 is version 0_9_1 The stats.jsp is accessible in both servlet containers, the only difference is that when you input the correct password and username in tomcat, you are logged in, and in red5 you are not, it just keeps asking you for the password. Any pointers? Am I missing something? I was wondering where and how in red5.xml should I specify bean properties such that I force red5 to use MemoryRealm that is under /conf/tomcat-users.xml, because it certainly doesn't do so now. It seems like the biggest question I have posted so far, but I tried to explain it as fully as possible as to avoid confusion.

  I've been working on a game with an engine that updates 20 times per seconds. I've got to point now where I want to start getting some performance figures and tweak the rendering and logic updates. In order to do so I started to add some timing code to my game loop, implemented as follows... NSDate* startTime = [NSDate date]; // Game update logic here.... // Also timing of smaller internal events NSDate* endTime = [NSDate date]; [endTime timeIntervalSinceDate:startTime]; I noticed however that when I timed blocks within the outer timing logic that the time they took to execute did not sum up to match the overall time taken. Sum of individual times: 10.001377ms Overall time: 10.016834ms Which illustrates my problem quite clearly. The overall time was 0.000012ms but the smaller events took only 0.000001ms. So what happened to the other 0.000011ms? Is there anything that looks particularly wrong with my code? Or is there an alternative timing mechanism I should use?

• Drawing performance with CGImageCreateWithJPEGDataProvider?

  I've actually curious about this for the iPhone. I am getting an MJPEG stream from a server and trying to render it natively on the iphone (without the use of safari class). Reasons for this is because the safari class while CAN render MJPEG natively, does not do so at the framerate I would like. So I tried drawing it natively, but I've come up with performance issues, namely a syncing issue between what I'm getting from the server and what I am able to draw onto the screen of the phone. (There should be a little lag, but the drift gets really bad, which is what I want to avoid). So I have a connection set up to my server and I do get the JPEGS. It's just data I insert into a NSMutableArray buffer CFMutableDataRef _t_data_ref = (CFMutableDataRef)[_buffer_array objectAtIndex:0]; //CGDataProviderRef imgDataProvider = CGDataProviderCreateWithCFData (_cf_buffer_data); CGDataProviderRef imgDataProvider = CGDataProviderCreateWithCFData(_t_data_ref); CGImageRef image = CGImageCreateWithJPEGDataProvider(imgDataProvider, NULL, true, kCGRenderingIntentDefault); CGImageRef imgRef = image; CGContextDrawImage(context, CGRectMake(0, 17, 380, 285), imgRef); CGImageRelease(image); CGDataProviderRelease(imgDataProvider); please note this is the gist of my code, but it should summarize what I am trying to accomplish with regards to drawing. Also in order to get the framerate in sync, I had to detach a separate thread that sleeps X seconds and calls [self setNeedsDisplay]. My buffer of jpeg data actually fills up quite quick, but I can't seem to actually consume what i'm getting at the same rate, actually much slower. Are there any documents that can describe what kind of performance tuning I can do to make it go faster when rendering the JPEG to the screen? Or am I kind of stuck here? Thanks!
