• How do I get the Touchpad Settings working on a Dell XPS 13" Ultrabook?

  Today I got an brand new Dell XPS 13 and I really like it. Wifi/Bluetooth/Brightness works very well. But only the Touchpad makes me insane. Okay, Multitouch is really nice and i love it on my Macbook but... i must click to click. How can I set up that is an "touch" to click? Its makes me insane. click, click, click.. Can I configure it? • Oracle Linux 6.3 RPMs Now Available

  The installation media ISO for Oracle Linux 6.3 is still "in the oven" but the RPMs are already available.  You can grab them on ULN, if you have an Oracle Linux support subscription, or anyone can get them from public-yum.oracle.com.  Oracle Linux 6.3 includes a quarterly update of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 2 (kernel-uek-2.6.39-200.9.0.el6uek).  To install that kernel, make sure you have the ol6_UEK_latest channel or repo enabled.  Enjoy.

• HDMI Audio stops after TV turned off

  After the 12.04 Update my HDMI audio stops working anytime I turn off my 2nd monitor(plasma TV). Graphics card is a Radeon 6800 which has DVI out to 1st monitor, HDMI out to receiver which the TV gets it's Audio/Video. Audio is always via my receiver sound. Things work fine as long as it boots with the TV and Receiver on. Turn off the TV and BART's HDMI audio will go away, and the HDMI option vanishes from the sound menu. I had an occasional HDMI issue with 11.10 but turning on/off the TV would fix the sound. How can I hardcode things so that it always uses HDMI out of audio? I suspect the TV is sending a signal upon that 12.04 is now listening for. Turning the TV back on does NOT resolve this, and I'd suggest having the ability to override this new "feature" via sound menu.

• AMD 6870 Twin Frozr II video adapter issues

  Hardware: AMD 6870 Twin Frozr II (1GB), ASUS 990 chipset Software: Ubuntu 11.10 Built a new PC from scratch, loaded it with Ubuntu 11.10. It's displaying, but with poor resolution, unable to change, as it says no drivers are installed. Ubuntu indicates that there are 2 proprietary drivers available to download: ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX Graphics driver (Post-release update) ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX Graphics driver The first won't even finish downloading. The second downloads and installs, but when I restart the PC as requested it boots up, I see purple in the background, then the video feed just stops with a black screen. I can still hear ubuntu boot up though. It seems like I just need the latest drivers, googled around and not had much luck. I'm pretty new with Ubuntu, but have basic knowledge. Any potentially helpful information would be welcome.

  E-Business Suite 11.5.10 Sustaining Support Exception & 12.1 Extended Support Now to Dec. 2018 [ID 1495337.1] As part of Oracle’s continued commitment to our customers, we will be providing an exception for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. This exception support will be comprised of three components: (1) new fixes for Severity 1 production issues, (2) United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates, and (3) payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014.  In addition, the Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended through December, 2018. Customers with an active Oracle Premier Support for Software contract will automatically be entitled to Extended Support deliverables for E-Business Suite 12.1. Please refer to the Lifetime Support section of oracle.com for further information regarding Oracle's Lifetime Support Policy for Applications. This change will be reflected in the October update to the Software Technical Support Policies.

• Which other "photo booth" program can I use besides cheese (on a Toshiba AC100)?

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04 on a Toshiba AC100 several days ago, as described at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/TEGRA/AC100, and seeing during the installation that the OS was able to use the camera (the installer suggested to make a photo for the first user), I wanted to play with the camera. I couldn't understand how to find a "photo booth" program in the new-style menu+desktop (not the classical menu with sections), so I remembered the popular "cheese" Linux program, and installed it via the Software Update tool (or whatever it is called; can be invoked from the panel on the desktop). But cheese doesn't start, i.e., it crashes. (The bug report telling the same.) As I said, the camera could be used by the OS on this machine -- this could be seen in the installer. Which "photo booth" programs can be installed and used without crashes in Ubuntu 12.04 on a Toshiba AC100 in order to play with the webcamera?

  Trailers or promotion videos can be very effective when done right and the Java community has been pretty good at it IMO. The latest ones are short teasers coming from the JavaBin folks to promote their very fine JavaZone conference in Oslo, Norway in September (celebrating their 10th anniversary). Update: the entire trailer is now available. Previous videos include Lady java and Java 4 Ever (must see if you somehow missed them). The inspiration for these may have come from the JavaPolis (now Devoxx) 2006 "There are better ways to meet your idols" trailer. IIRC, James Gosling was quoted saying "This is sick, I love it!". Your mileage may vary ;) Sun Microsystems also used to make some "promotion" videos. Here's a selection.

• How do you go about checking your open source libraries for keystroke loggers?

  A random person on the internet told me that a technology was secure(1), safe to use and didn't contain keyloggers because it is open source. While I can trivially detect the key stroke logger in this open source application, what can developers(2) do to protect themselves against rouge committers to open source projects? Doing a back of the envelope threat analysis, if I were a rogue developer, I'd fork a branch on git and promote it's download since it would have twitter support (and a secret key stroke logger). If it was an SVN repo, I'd create just create a new project. Even better would be to put the malicious code in the automatic update routines. (1) I won't mention which because I can only deal with one kind of zealot at a time. (2) Ordinary users are at the mercy of their virus and malware detection software-- it's absurd to expect grandma to read the source of code of their open source word processor's source code to find the keystroke logger.

  I am developing a multiplayer game for the web, android and ios. For the web and android i can instantly push out new versions of my game because they support executing remotly loaded code. But with IOS i need to wait for an Apple approval taking about 10 days. I want to push updates more then weekly. What if my server code changes so the client MUST update? Run an old version of the server code just for IOS? How do other multiplayer devs handle this ?

• Why has wireless disappeared after my 12.10 upgrade?

  I just upgraded to 12.10 on my Lenovo B570 laptop. NetworkManager isn't displaying a submenu for wireless connections at all, even though I downloaded the update through the wireless connection. This displeases me. • How to load a text file from a server into iPhone game with AS3 in Adobe AIR?

  Im creating an iPhone game with Adobe AIR, and I want to be able to load a simple text msg into an dynamic text box on the games front screen from my server (and then be able to update that text file on the server, so it updates automatically in the game after the game is on the app store) How would I go about acheiving that? is it as simple as using a getURL? are there any specifical issues with trying to do this on the iPhone via AIR that I should be aware of? According  to the Microsoft server division blog, the service pack will be available to Microsoft's TechNet and MSDN subscribers, as well as to Microsoft volume licensing customers, on Feb. 16, 2011. • I'm getting a black screen right after Install Ubuntu option on GRUB menu. Any ideas?

  I've formatted my USB and remade the live USB twice. I tried editing editing the commands (pressing the 'e' key while the command was highlighted on the GRUB menu) by 1. deleting quiet splash and replacing it with nomodeset 2. adding nomodeset right before quiet splash 3. deleting quiet splash and adding radeon.modeset=0 I saw another solution for a fix by editing GRUB but in command line 'sudo' 'nano' and 'update-grub' all show up as unknown commands. I'm brand new to Ubuntu, in case you couldn't tell. I would appreciate any help you could give me. I want to convince my brother that Ubuntu is a better option than iOS but I can't do that if I can't install it. If you need more information, please ask. I'm not dual booting. I want this to be a full install. Thanks.

• Quickly and Python Twisted

  I am creating a Quickly application that makes use of Python Twisted. When the user launches a window, I want to start the Twisted server I wrote. However, when I do this, it freezes the GUI, because the reactor.run method is constantly running after it is started. I need a way to start the Twisted reactor in its own thread, so that the GUI will continue to operate while the reactor is running. I have read about using Twisted with pyGTK in the Twisted documentation, but I am not sure how I would accomplish this with a Quickly application. What is the best way to start my Twisted server when a window opens without freezing the GUI? Update: My if __name__ == '__main__' statement at the end of my dialog file is: print 'Preparing GLib' GLib.idle_add(before_running) print 'Staring Reactor' from twisted.internet import reactor reactor.run()` I have imported and installed twisted.gtk3reactor earlier on in the file. The before_running method contains dialog = ClientDialog() and dialog.show, as well as the rest of the code I want to run when the dialog opens.

• How to install Edubuntu on a system with low memory (256 Mb)?

  I'm preparing an old system with 256 Mb RAM to send it to some children. It doesn't have Ethernet controller and there are no Internet access at the destination. I've chosen Edubuntu for obvious reasons and modified it with UCK trying to minimize memory usage just to install, let alone using it yet. But Ubiquity won't start even in openbox (edited /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf) because there are no space left on /cow right after booting. I've already deleted things like ibus, zeitgeist, update-manager (no network access after all), twisted-core, plymouth logos. I'm thinking about creating a swap partition on HDD, can it be later added to expand this /cow ? Is there a package for the text-mode installation which is used on Alternate CDs? I don't want to re-create Edubuntu from an Alternate CD. This behavior is reproducible in VM limited to 256Mb RAM.

Prior to this update, Gmail could search inside of HTML attachments but lacked more advanced attachment querying abilities. Now when you search your Gmail account you’ll see search results for not only the subject and body contents but also the contents of popular formats like PDF and Word documents. Don’t forget to take advantage of advanced search terms to speed up your query. If you know the information you need is in an attachment but can’t remember which email, include “has:attachment” in your search to only peek inside emails with attachments. • Semi-transparent parts of theme show as full white

  I am running ubuntu 10.04 64bit on a macbook pro, using the nvidia-drivers version 260.19.29. As of a recent kernel update, all the semi-transparent parts of my theme show as full white. This means: no gradients on scrollbars and buttons, 'inverted' dividers in context menu's, full white gnome-do panel etc. Does anyone know what causes this and how I can fix it? • Computer crashed during 3.0.0.17-generic kernel upgrade

  My computer crashed (due to heat) during the update process for the 3.0.0.17-generic kernel upgrade. My computer will not boot ant all in 3.0.0.17 now and 3.0.0.16 is unstable (wireless networking doesn't work, also crashes often). I found the boot to previous versions tool at start up and the last stable version is 3.0.0.15-generic. However, my computer still thinks that it has 3.0.0.16-generic and 3.0.0.17-generic, even though both of these versions are broken. Is there anyway to force a reinstall of the 3.0.0.16-generic and 3.0.0.17-generic kernel updates from 3.0.0.15 and associated other updates?. (Without having to do a full reinstall?) I am running ubuntu 11.10. Thanks!

• Trouble with 12.10 lag

  Well basicly lately I have been having lag problems with 12.10. I will post my specs, but before the update to 12.10, it said that I had intel graphics. Now it says I have Gallium. My specs: *Memory: 3.9 GiB *Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5500 @ 2.80GHz × 2 *Graphics: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.2, 128 bits) (used to say intel graphics) *OS Type: 32-bit *Disk: 486.1 GB The output of the command sudo apt-cache check is this: E: Invalid operation check The output of the command sudo lspci -nnk | grep -A5 VGA is this: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2e32] (rev 03) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.   I have the following problem every time i run apt-get install: for example : installing python-django-south ... Unpacking python-django-south (from .../python-django-south_0.5-2_all.deb) ...
