installing php gd on ubuntu on a vps server

I was working on localhost with resizing images and everything was great. Than I uploaded to my server and things got interesting. After searching around, looks like I have to enable php-gd on my server. I tried running the line sudo apt-get install php5-gd using putty, and it didn't work. Any ideas why? Also, after the install, I assume I will need to run the function sudo reboot right? clearly I'm not an expert in this area :p

Would a USB hub work in reverse?

Imagine for a moment with a 4 port USB hub. Normally how this would work is the hub has one plug that goes to the computer, then 4 ports that you can plug in other things to (thumb drive, keyboard, mouse etc). I am wondering if I can use it in reverse. So I would have 1 keyboard going in to the hub, and then plug in male to male usb cables from the 4 ports to 4 different PCs, my aim is that when a key is pressed on the keyboard all 4 PCs will receive it as if the keyboard were plugged in to them. Does anyone know if this would work? And if not does anyone have any ideas how I could get the same effect? EDIT: So I am looking for more of a KVM switch type device rather than a USB hub. However all of the KVM switches I've found use some sort of mechanism to select which computer you'll be using. (some are physical switches / buttons, others do it via software "automatically" some how) However I need to have 1 keyboard hooked up to 2 computers and when I press a key on the keyboard I want the keypress to be sent to both computers simultaneously, not to one or the other. Does anyone know if KVMs with this feature exist?

Migrate from MySQL to PostgreSQL on Linux (Kubuntu)

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... Trying to migrate a database from MySQL to PostgreSQL. All the documentation I have read covers, in great detail, how to migrate the structure. I have found very little documentation on migrating the data. The schema has 13 tables (which have been migrated successfully) and 9 GB of data. MySQL version: 5.1.x PostgreSQL version: 8.4.x I want to use the R programming language to analyze the data using SQL select statements; PostgreSQL has PL/R, but MySQL has nothing (as far as I can tell). A New Hope Create the database location (/var has insufficient space; also dislike having the PostgreSQL version number everywhere -- upgrading would break scripts!): sudo mkdir -p /home/postgres/main sudo cp -Rp /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main /home/postgres sudo chown -R postgres.postgres /home/postgres sudo chmod -R 700 /home/postgres sudo usermod -d /home/postgres/ postgres All good to here. How do I ensure that adding new rows in PostgreSQL will start enumerating from the index of the last row inserted (and not conflict with an existing primary key from the sequence)? How do you ensure the schema name comes through when transforming the data from MySQL to PostgreSQL inserts? How can I resolve Hibernate 3's ConstraintViolationException when updating a Persistent Entity's Col

I'm trying to discover why two nearly identical class sets are behaving different from Hibernate 3's perspective. I'm fairly new to Hibernate in general and I'm hoping I'm missing something fairly obvious about the mappings or timing issues or something along those lines but I spent the whole day yesterday staring at the two sets and any differences that would lead to one being able to be persisted and the other not completely escaped me. It is identical except for name. Instead of Job it's Web. Instead of JobStateChange it's WebStateChange. Instead of JobState it's WebState. Both Job and Web's SortedSet of StateChanges are mapped as a Hibernate CollectionOfElements. Both are @Embeddable. Both are SortType.Natural. Both are backed by an Enumeration with some advancement rules in it. And yet when a nearly identical test is run for Web, no issue is discovered and the data flushes fine. For the sake of brevity I won't include all of the Web classes here, but I will include the test and if anyone wants to see the actual sources, I'll include them (just leave a comment). Everything works perfectly. Not so with Job. A possibly pertinent detail: the reconstitution code works fine if I cease to map JobStateChange.data as a TIMESTAMP and instead as a DATE, and ensure that all of the StateChanges always occur on different Dates. The problem is that this particular business entity can go through many state changes in a single day and so it needs to be sorted by time stamp rather than by date. If I don't do this then I can't sort the StateChanges correctly. That being said, WebStateChange.date is also mapped as a TIMESTAMP and so I again remain absolutely befuddled as to where this error is arising from. I tried to do a fairly thorough job of giving all of the technical details of the implementation but as this particular question is very implementation specific, if I missed anything just let me know in the comments and I'll include it. Hi I'm using JNI to access the exiv2 library (written in C++) in Java and I'm getting a weird runtime error in the JNI code. I've tried using various -Xms and -Xmx options, but that seems to have no affect. Installation stuck on "Installation Type" screen

I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 with Windows 7 from a CD. I am using an HP Pavilion dm4. I've never used Ubuntu (or any Linux) before. Everything goes alright until I get to the "Installation Type" screen. Instead of giving me options, it just has a blank menu, and all the buttons are disabled. When I click "Continue", it gives me an error saying that it can't find the root or something like that. The trial version works fine, but I can't actually install it. Everything on the trial version is really slow, presumably because everything is on the CD or the Windows partition. I did some research, but the only post I could find was http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1870478 Where the only advice is to format the entire drive, which I'm not willing to do. Any suggestions? I'm downloading 10.04 right now and I'm going to try with that instead. EDIT: 10.04 didn't work either. I got to the partitioning screen and got the same problem. I read some more forums, loaded up 11.10 trial from the disk, opened the Terminal and typed sudo apt-get remove dmraid and then y. Then I was actually able to see something on the "Installation type" page: "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" or "Something else". Which is weird, since Windows 7 should be installed. When I click Something Else, I get: /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdb1 (ntfs) (208 MB) (69 MB used) /dev/sdb2 (ntfs) (477542 MB) (unknown used) /dev/sdb3 (ntfs) (18085 MB) (16094 MB used) /dev/sdb4 (fat32) (4265 MB) (3084 MB used) I have no idea what any of this means. In 12.04: Failed to load session 'ubuntu' [closed]

Possible Duplicate: There's an issue with an Alpha/Beta Release of Ubuntu, what should I do? I'm using 12.04 beta. Today I was prompted to install some updates, which I did, followed by a reboot. On reboot, X starts, but all I see is a single dialog window in the middle of the screen with the text: Failed to load session 'ubuntu' I don't even see the mouse, or the login screen, just this 1 line of text. When I hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to run dist-upgrade from a command prompt, I get this: The following packages have been kept back: libgnome-desktop-3-2 So to see why it was kept back, I tried the following: $ sudo apt-get install libgnome-desktop-3-2 ... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libgnome-desktop-3-2 : Depends: gnome-desktop3-data (= 3.3.92-0ubuntu1) but 3.3.91-0ubuntu2 is to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. Anyone else seeing this, or have an idea how to fix it? If you're going to close it as a duplicate, can you please link to the duplicate question?

Things I tried already: I googled and found a Ubuntu bug with apparmor (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-5.5/+bug/970366), I changed apparmor from enforce mode to complain mode: sudo apt-get install apparmor-utils sudo aa-complain /usr/sbin/mysqld sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor reload but it didn't help. I still can't start mysql. I also thought the issue may be because the InnoDB logfiles were a different size than mysql was expecting. I removed the innodb log files before restarting using: sudo mv /var/lib/mysql/ib_logfile* /tmp. No luck though. Workaround: I re-installed 12.04, made sure not to touch /etc/mysql/my.cnf in any way. Mysql is working so I can get on with what I need to do. But I will need to edit it at some point - Hopefully I'll have figured out a solution, or this question will have been answered by that point...

Eclipse Execute from Home - Eclipse.org Version

Due to a lot of minor errors with the eclipse from the repository( cannot install mylyn or pydev due to unmet dependencies) I manually downloaded from eclipse.org. I have not had this problem before but when I go to ~/eclipse (where I extracted the zip) and try to run eclipse it will not run. From the command line I just get eclipse not installed use sudo apt-get to install it. I just installed Raring Ringtail on this dell latitude D630 and I can't get it to connect without a wifi dongle. Cannot get realtek8188ee to work in 14.04

I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A5300 laptop. When I run lspci -nn it shows 02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188EE Wireless Network Adapter [10ec:8179] (rev 01) It has always had the common problem others have asked about here (and many, many other places on the web) where it would connect, then drop the connection at random intervals. I tried every solution I could find, here & elsewhere, and they always caused errors after running "make" (more details below), but as I could still connect to networks I just dealt with it. I upgraded to 14.04 a few days ago and now it won't connect at all - I need help getting this to work. Laptop with Intel Graphics: external VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no "hot plugging")

I am able to get an external VGA monitor (or projector) to work if I start my laptop with it connected. However, if I start the laptop with it disconnected there is no signal on the external. The Displays screen shows the external, and thinks that it is active, but there is no signal being sent to it. This has been a persistent problem since 10.04 (I am now on 12.04.... each upgrade hoping something is improved). I should note that even when it works (starting with display connected), Displays still says the monitor is "unknown" (but it sends the signal). For the correct resolution to display, I have had to add a few xrandr lines for my monitor to my .xprofile file... otherwise resolution is limited to default 1024x768. So, resolution issues can be worked around, but the main issue is that the external doesn't get a signal without starting the machine with it connected. I then performed a restart of the server and now apache2 starts up but when I navigate to http://192.168.1.72/phpmyadmin/ I am getting a 403 error. Ubuntu backlight problem with Nvidia graphics

I have a laptop mySN QMG6 / Chiligreen Mobilitas NW which is Quanta TW9 barebone with intel i3 and nvidia 335m GT onboard. On ubuntu distros 10.04, 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 i had problem with changing screen backlight with nouveau and nvidia drivers. FN+F4/F5 buttons did not change my brightness. I tried to edit xorg.conf, adding Option “RegistryDwords” “EnableBrightnessControl=1? Also tried to add some lines to grug acpi_osi="Linux" acpi_backlight=vendor Neither worked for me. Today I installed Ubuntu 12.04 beta2 and... With nouveau driver my FN key works, and changes the brightness (is it a new 3.0.22 linux kernel, or patched nouveau driver, i don't know). This is a big step forward. But, when installing proprietary nvidia driver (295.33) FN button stops working and i can't change brightness. I also tried workaround with xorg and grub with no result. Tried to install acpi from apt - no result. Is there anything left to try? I really need that nvidia driver working with FN keys, as i would like to have a working 3D acceleration. P.S. Does the nouveau driver has 3d acceleration like nvidia drivers??? If there is need to provide some log data, please write what should i print, as i'm a bit new to Ubuntu. P.P.S. Same problems i had with other Linux distros (Mint, Fedora and others) P.P.P.S. Other FN buttons work with both drivers (Mute, VOL UP/DOWN, WiFi on/off, Bluetooth, Sleep, Start/Pause, Stop, Next/Prev song)

Cannot get webapps to work after upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04. But I cannot use WebApps. In fact there is no sign of them anywhere. Firefox and Chromium are not prompting for integration. I tried re-installing both browsers/webapps plugin of each, but no luck. Out of curiousity, I tried to install unity-webapps-preview through terminal, apt-get reported that this operation is going to need 127mb. After installation, restarting session, nothing. I re-ran the unity-webapp-preview in terminal and SURPRISINGLY it again asked me that this operation is going to need 58mb. After Installation, nothing. Firefox is showing the unity-webapp plugin in Extensions but in Preferences there is noting like Unity settings or options for exceptions in General tab (as I seen in some threads). Chromium is not even showing the plugin in Extensions nor in the settings. Really need help. I know there is a reported bug but it is mostly about the complains that the webapps are not working as they should but in my case they don't seem to exist.
