  I'm trying to do some parameter estimation and want to choose parameter estimates that minimize the square error in a predicted equation over about 30 variables. If the equation were linear, I would just compute the 30 partial derivatives, set them all to zero, and use a linear-equation solver. But unfortunately the equation is nonlinear and so are its derivatives. If the equation were over a single variable, I would just use Newton's method (also known as Newton-Raphson). The Web is rich in examples and code to implement Newton's method for functions of a single variable. Given that I have about 30 variables, how can I program a numeric solution to this problem using Newton's method? I have the equation in closed form and can compute the first and second derivatives, but I don't know quite how to proceed from there. I have found a large number of treatments on the web, but they quickly get into heavy matrix notation. I've found something moderately helpful on Wikipedia, but I'm having trouble translating it into code. Where I'm worried about breaking down is in the matrix algebra and matrix inversions. I can invert a matrix with a linear-equation solver but I'm worried about getting the right rows and columns, avoiding transposition errors, and so on. To be quite concrete: I want to work with tables mapping variables to their values. I can write a function of such a table that returns the square error given such a table as argument. I can also create functions that return a partial derivative with respect to any given variable. I have a reasonable starting estimate for the values in the table, so I'm not worried about convergence. I'm not sure how to write the loop that uses an estimate (table of value for each variable), the function, and a table of partial-derivative functions to produce a new estimate. That last is what I'd like help with. Any direct help or pointers to good sources will be warmly appreciated. Edit: Since I have the first and second derivatives in closed form, I would like to take advantage of them and avoid more slowly converging methods like simplex searches.

• Emulating Windows Photo Viewer image dragging in c#

  Hi, i'm trying to emulate how image is being dragged inside the windows photo viewer when it is large. The problem is, i don't how to drag the image while keeping it intact in the form's edges. If you're observing windows photo viewer, when you drag the image downward for instance the image moves and stops when the top end of the image is visible, but in my app, it continues to move since i don't know how to check when to stop it. Any idea please?

• Possible to set monthCalendar to show current month and previous 2 months?

  In a WinForms (3.5) application there is form with a monthCalendar control. The calendar control has a calendarDimension of 3 columns by 1 row. This means that it currently shows June, July, August of 2010. Is it possible to have the calendar to show April, May, June of 2010 instead? My dataset doesn't have any future dates so the date selection will be for current or older dates.

  Hi all, I am getting an error when I go to start my world. it says that " The procedure entry point OPENSSL_add_all_algorithms_noconf could not be located in the dynamic link library libeay32.dll".I have tried re loading the whole thing, just downloading the dll file, downloading a dll file form the internet but nothing fixes it.   Hello, I'm trying to store a number in django that looks like this: 000001 My problem is that if I type this inside an IntegerField it gets converted to "1" without the leading zeros. I've tried also with a DecimalField with the same result. How can I store the leading zeros whithout using a CharField? (I need to manipulate that number in it's integer form)

  I have found similar questions to mine but none of the suggestions seems to apply to my situation, so here goes... I have a webpage with a buch of images on them. Each image has a title which in markup is between h2 tags. The title is a link, so the resulting markup is like this: <ul class="imagelist"> <li> <a href=""><h2>Title 1</h2></a> <a href=""><img src="" /></a> </li> <li> Image 2, etc... </li> </ul> All I want is for the title links to not be underlined. I tried to address this like this: .imagelist li a h2 { color:#333; text-decoration:none; } It completely ignores the text-decoration rule, yet respects the color rule. From other questions I learned that this could be because a child element cannot overrule the text-decoration of any of its parents. So, I went looking for the parent elements to see if any explicit text-decoration rules are applied. I found none. This is driving me crazy, any help?   It seems that the out of the box approve/reject buttons in SharePoint CMS try to direct you to an InfoPath form. We have implemented custom .aspx pages that we use for our workflow approval process and would like it to show these when a user clicks the buttons. Currently we get an error that the formURN cannot be found. Another question is if anyone has a clue on what the KNOWN_TRANSACTIONS_KEY is and how to fill it, is it just the product id of the purchase?

• Sharepoint calculated Date field shows incorrectly in non-US region

  If a SharePoint user (with Regional Settings set to UK) views a calculated date field in a View details form, the field shows incorrectly showing the date is in US format, thus 01-Apr-2010 for 03-Jan-2010, and doesnt show unresolvalble dates such as 31-Dec-2010. This applies even with a simnple =[Modified] formula The Server is set up in the US for that locale. Does anyone know of a workaround for this or if there is a patch available ? Thanks in advance..
