• Transferring existing files from ext3 to ZFS (on FreeBSD)

  I use an old machine as a file server, for backups, and as a testbed for development. I currently have Debian installed, but I'm very interested in FreeBSD because of ZFS: I really, really like its file integrity features. Before I switch, however, I wanted to ask: what's the best way to migrate my ~400GB of files from the current filesystem (ext3) to ZFS? My number-one requirement is that the migration be absolutely reliable: I don't want to lose any data. (I'll be backing it up before doing this anyway, but still.) My secondary goal is speed: I'd rather not have this take overnight if it doesn't have to. Recommendations? Is FUSE for FreeBSD stable enough to use? What about FreeBSD's native read support for ext3? NFS, maybe? How have you done this?

• Disk failure is imminent Laptop Hard drive ~5 months old

  There's another post about this, but I don't have enough 'points' to say anything on that thread. So I'll start my own ... with more details! My computer still boots, but gnome domain reports problems with HDD smart. This has been confirmed in the bios as it makes me press f1 to boot up now. I tried running HDD disk check in the bios, but it fails running the tests. As in, running the tests failed not that the tests themselves indicated a failed drive. • Best Java Book(s) for an Experienced Developer

  I have been a .NET developer now for about the past 5/6 years give or take. I have never done any professional Java development and the last time I really touched it was probably back in college. I have been toying with the Scala language a little bit but nothing serious. Recently, I've been offered an opportunity to do some pretty cool work, but using Java instead of .NET. I think I can get by alright with my current skill set, meaning I already know how to program well and am familiar with languages such as C# and C++, etc. So, the syntax and all that language stuff are really not a problem. What I need is a really good reference book and a book about how to think in Java. Each language/Framework/Stack tries to address things a certain way and I'm sure Java is no different. What are some great Java books that you simply can't live without? Are there any books that talk about the most important parts of Java that must be understood before all else? As a side note, I will be doing mostly Java web development. Not really 100% on what types of stuff they are using for persistence, framework, server, etc. Thanks again for the consideration.

• Keeping game model and graphics/animation separate but in sync

  Suppose I'm building a chess game where I want to have animations. Pieces glide to their new squares when moved. Pieces perform attack animations when capturing other pieces. I'm not sure how to effectively separate the data and logic needed for these animations and the actual game model (in the MVC sense). The pieces themselves should ideally not have to worry about their pixel coordinates or current animation frame. At the same time, many changes to the model are effectively driven by animations. A moved piece changes its position after (before?) its sprite is done gliding. A piece is removed from the board after the capturing piece is finished its attack animation. How would you suggest I manage the game model, the graphics and animations, and their relationships? For example, where would the animations "live"? How would animations be created and managed in response to player moves? How would animations drive updates to the game model, or how would the game model drive animations?

• A question about the cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script

  I have been testing the latest cobbler for PXE booting Ubuntu 12.04.1-server-x86_64 and 12.10-server-x86_64 using a Scentific Linux 6.3 host to run the cobbler server. With the former, I got everything going. But with the later, I haven't been successful. As an attempt to figure things out, I downloaded Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 source package. Examining the content, I soon noticed that Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 came with a cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script. I reviewed the code and spotted something interesting: line 9 of the script states: 9 AUTO_KOPTS='log_host=@@server@@ log_port=514 priority=critical locale=en_US netcfg/choose_interface=auto' But after extensive googling, reading both Debian and Ubuntu's documentation about the debian-installer, I don't see these two kopts log_host and log_port documented anywhere. Putting it in the profile of my current test setup, even my cobbler server host does run rsyslogd, I don't see anything logged either. No, I don't have iptables and selinux on on the cobbler server host. Can anyone point to me where I can read more about these two options? Having the ability to log an installation to a remote central logging host would be really cool.

  I am using the Hiawatha web server and running drupal on a FastCGI PHP server. The drupal site is using imagecache and it requires either private files or clean urls. The issue I am having with clean urls is that requests to files are being rewritten into index.php as well. My current config is: UrlToolkit { ToolkitID = drupal RequestURI exists Return Match (/files/*) Rewrite $1 Match ^/(.*) Rewrite /index.php?q=$1 } The above does not work.   Geekswithblogs was my first ever blog and my first post was on 22nd June 2006. Since then very little functionality has been added. This is not a complaint, but rather an observation that it is very hard to keep up with all of the blogging capabilities that people want. My point would be: “Why bother!” Vote now for a migration of the awesome Geekswithblogs content from SubText to Wordpress. Having been a long time user of GWB I have been worried of late by my envy of other blogging platforms. I made a number of requests around 10 months ago for things that almost all blogging platforms provide, but which are not available on GWB. Support other comment frameworks – The current comment system is so antiquated that it does not even have the common filters like Facebook, twitter or Google login to help prevent spam. Tags are not listed in the RSS – This can prevent you from getting the Google juice that you deserve 301 redirects to a single URL– If you use a custom URL then all your posts are split between both the GWB URL and the custom one. This is VERY bas for SEO. I realise that it is difficult to find time to add all of the features that all the uber geeks on this site want, so why bother… lets move to the most popular and moded platform available and allow everyone to add whatever widgets they like. • Visual Studio 2010 on Macbook Air

  Does anyone here run Visual Studio 2010 (or VS12 RC) on a Macbook Air? I have the current model with 4GB ram, 13" screen, and 256GB SSD drive. Before I go through the effort of configuring this, I'd like to know if anyone from the community has done this and: Was the performance acceptable? If it is, I plan to get a larger cinema display monitor as a second display and do all my coding on this machine ditching my desktop. Did you use Boot camp, Parallels, or VMWare? I feel to maximize performance that boot camp would be necessary to make the most utilization of the memory, but am not sure if this completely necessary. I'd prefer to use a VM, but wasn't sure if this was practical and would value your input before buying a license. Did you also run anything else on the Windows installation, such as SQL Server express, IISExpress, etc? Did performance lag after a certain point? Note: I would have asked this in superuser.com, but felt this applied more directly to the programming community.

• apache2 slow responding (debian)

  I'm running an apache2 2.2.9 webserver with modpython and mpm_worker_module. The current config for the mpm is ServerLimit 32 StartServers 10 MaxClients 800 MinSpareThreads 25 MaxSpareThreads 75 ThreadsPerChild 25 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 The server has 1G of ram and a 100Mbit connection. Checking netstat -na | grep ESTABLISHED | wc -l gives me a number between 50 - 60. The load is about 1.0 Every pageload is also cached by memcached. I can't see why the server is so slow in responding to new connections, sometimes droping them completely? Also tried disabling iptables to make sure it's not because of a full state table or something like that. The only thing in dmesg is a lot of spam about "TCP: Treason uncloaked!"

• SAP or Navision? Career Path

  This could be tricky to ask; I may or may not ask this question here but I thought to give it a try. I've been in Software Industry since 2002 and now it has been a time that I'm at Senior level where I normally code, lead and define the architect; giving technical solutions to the management is one of my asset that I've earned during my services. Now it is the time to define the road map for the future, $$$. I am not in favor of Project Management roles. I've been thinking of going through the ERP and my current company does provide me an option to go for Navision/ Microsoft Dynamics. They are currently on 4.0 but they are planning to move for 2009 and also to build one of their own plug-in. Indeed the option is good because Microsoft is trying to accomplish the market for Dynamics products. However, they have less success in Australia. Now, Another option is with SAP where person can go with 200 K $ a year. Where as I'd doubt that if the same kind of growth, financial, is available for Microsoft geek. What is your opinion on Navision or SAP? If I try to completely move to SAP it could be bit challenging as market will consider me a fresher. However the return is quite good. Where in case of Microsoft, I think technology changes so fast that there is a less chance to grow in, within, the same experience; in other word, if any new framework comes in .net then market look for that person who knows this new framework and not .net But in case of SAP, where the base remain same and chances are to grab more money from the market. What would you do if you were me? In stackoverflow - Navision questions are 20+ where in SAP 200+///?? :-)

• Can I upgrade an Asus M51Sn laptop to 2x4GB of RAM? (DDR2)

  My Asus M51Sn has 2 RAM slots which currently have 1x1GB + 1x2GB DDR2-800 SODimm RAM modules installed. I've found out that 4GB DDR2 SODimm modules do exist, though they are impossible to find in local stores nere here, but I've found them in online stores like these: http://www.pccomponentes.com/g_skill_ddr2_800_pc2_6400_4gb_so_dimm.html They seem to meet the specification, so can I replace both my current modules with 2x4GB modules, and reach a total of 8GB? Or should I worry about some limit (e.g. 4GB max or 2GB per slot) imposed by the matherboard, chipset or whatever? (I currently use Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit, so I plan to use the pae kernel, which supposedly supports 4GB ram on a 32bit system; or I may consider switching tu 64bit ubuntu; the question is about hardware limitations, not OS limitations).

• "io: postinst-must-call-ldconfig" when creating a package

  I'm trying to create an ubuntu .deb package for the (pretty awesome) Io Language. I am not the developer of that language, so I'm not familiar with its sourcecode yet. This is my first attempt at creating a .deb file. In order to create the .deb, I'm following these instructions: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/01/how-to-create-deb-package-ubuntu-debian.html So far I've been able to create a .deb file (io_2010.06.01-1_amd64.deb) and a changes file (io_201.06.01-1_amd64.changes). I'm using lintian to check the changes file, and it reports an issue I don't know how to resolve: $ lintian -Ivi io_2010.06.01-1_amd64.changes ... (lots of messages) I: io: no-symbols-control-file usr/lib/libiovmall.so I: io: no-symbols-control-file usr/lib/libgarbagecollector.so I: io: no-symbols-control-file usr/lib/libbasekit.so E: io: postinst-must-call-ldconfig usr/lib/libiovmall.so N: N: The package installs shared libraries in a directory controlled by the N: dynamic library loader. I think I understand what the problem is (I need to make sure that ldconfig is invoked "somewhere", possibly on a place called "posinst") but I don't know how to resolve it (i.e. where this "posinsts" file is and how should I change it). The current way of installing Io in Ubuntu is basically running sudo make install and then sudo ldconfig. Maybe the makefile should be modified so ldconfig is called from it? I don't know. • SlimDX Texture2D from DataRectangle array

  I'm totally new to DirectX. I'm using SlimDX to create a texture consisting of 13046 DataRectangles. Here's my code. • Star Trek inspired home automation visualisation

  I’ve always been a more or less active fan of Star Trek. During the construction phase of my house I started coding a GUI for controlling the house which has an EIB. Just for fun I designed a version inspired by the LCARS design used in Star Trek TNG and showed this to my wife. I showed her several designs before but this was the only one, she really liked. So I decided to go on with this. I started a C# WinForms application. The software runs on a wall mounted Shuttle Barebone-PC. First plan was an industrial panel-pc but the processor was too slow. The now-used Atom is ok. I started with the LCARS-controls found on Codeproject. Since the classic LCARS design divides the screen into two parts this tended to be impracticable, so I used my own design For now the software is able to: Switch lights/wall outlets Show current temperatures for all room controllers Show outside temperature with a 24h trend chart Show the status of the two heat pumps Provide an alarm clock (e.g. for cooking) Play internet radio streams Control absence Mute the door bell Speak status messages via speech synthesis For now, I’m working on an integration of my electric meter. The main heat pump and the electric meter are connected to my LAN. I also tried some speech recognition, but I’ve problems with the microphone. I't’s working when you are right in front of the PC, but not far away, let’s say on the other side of the room. So this is the main view. The table displays raw values which are sent over the EIB – completely useless but looks great For each floor I have a different view. Here you can see the temperatures and check the status of the lights (the buttons are blinking when a light is switched on) This is the view for the heat pump:   Next step would be to integrate a control of my squeezebox server (I use different Squeezeboxes through the house as a multiroom audio solution)

• Ubuntu 12.04 OpenCL with Intel and Radeon?

  I want to setup my Ubuntu 12.04 with OpenCL(Open Computing Language) support for i7 2600k and Radeon HD5870. My Monitor is connected to the integrated Graphics of the i7. Intel OpenCL SDK is installed and working. Iteration of avaliable OpenCL devices shows 2 entries for Intel. As recommended I installed AMD APP SDK 2.6 first and then the fglrx driver. I installed fglrx from Ubuntu repositories. This works fine till here. When I run aticonfig --inital -f and restart the system I get into trouble. • benchmark tcp: ab or iperf like tool to send hex/binary/pcap data?

  Hello all, I have written a server in Twisted for a current project I'm working on, and now I need to test it. It receives TCP packets, with the payload consisting of just a serialised binary string. I want to be able to test the server for concurrency/throughput using the binary data as the payload, but can not find any tool that will allow me to do this. I tried iperf -F but it didn't work, as I think it was sending the binary/hex data as chars. I've also looked at ab which seems to be perfect - if only for http. As well as these, I've had a look at tcpreplay, but it doesn't perform any testing (or establish TCP connections) so it's not much use. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm rather stuck on this one!

• Standards for how developers work on their own workstations

  We've just come across one of those situations which occasionally comes up when a developer goes off sick for a few days mid-project. There were a few questions about whether he'd committed the latest version of his code or whether there was something more recent on his local machine we should be looking at, and we had a delivery to a customer pending so we couldn't wait for him to return. One of the other developers logged on as him to see and found a mess of workspaces, many seemingly of the same projects, with timestamps that made it unclear which one was "current" (he was prototyping some bits on versions of the project other than his "core" one). Obviously this is a pain in the neck, however the alternative (which would seem to be strict standards for how each developer works on their own machine to ensure that any other developer can pick things up with a minimum of effort) is likely to break many developers personal work flows and lead to inefficiency on an individual level. I'm not talking about standards for checked-in code, or even general development standards, I'm talking about how a developer works locally, a domain generally considered (in my experience) to be almost entirely under the developers own control. So how do you handle situations like this? Are the one of those things that just happens and you have to deal with, the price you pay for developers being allowed to work in the way that best suits them? Or do you ask developers to adhere to standards in this area - use of specific directories, naming standards, notes on a wiki or whatever? And if so what do your standards cover, how strict are they, how do you police them and so on? Or is there another solution I'm missing? [Assume for the sake of argument that the developer can not be contacted to talk through what he was doing here - even if he could knowing and describing which workspace is which from memory isn't going to be simple and flawless and sometimes people genuinely can't be contacted and I'd like a solution which covers all eventualities.]

• What are the strategies available to minimise badblocks on an encrypted partition?

  Let me explain my backup strategy and the problem I am facing. My current backup strategy: Open encrypted container and execute Carbon Copy Cleaner on it at least once a week. Rotate backup disks. Problem: I have an Truecrypt partition on my 1st external hard disk. I recently found out that some files on this encrypted partition cannot be read due to bad blocks (reported by Antonio Diaz's GNU 'ddrescue'). My backup strategy is ineffective in this scenario because bad blocks are discovered during backup. Possible strategy Strategy #0: Have the encrypted partition over a RAID 1 with 2 disks. Is this a suitable strategy ? Strategy #1: Do you think of any other one ? Environment: Mac OS X 10.8 External 2.5" hard disk (SATA) No RAID

• VLC - Adding to playlist

  I am using Songr to find/stream songs and double click them to play in VLC which basically "plays" the URL. But as I am listening to one item and search for another and double click another item from the results, it replaces the currently playing item in VLC. How do I set it up such that double clicking adds to the current playlist? When I see now is that it adds the new item to the end of the playlist and proceeds to play it. Any ideas? Thanks

• How to enable Jetty to support cometd/reverse ajax while let it listen to port 80?

  Hi, I would like to use cometd / reverse ajax capability of Jetty 7. I tried to configure it so it listen to port 80, instead of 8080. However, according to http://jetty.mortbay.org/jetty5/faq/faq%5Fs%5F200-General%5Ft%5Fapache.html , Apache can be configured as a HTTP/1.1 proxy to pass selected request to the Jetty using the HTTP/1.1 protocol. This is simple to configure and use, but current versions of the apache mod_proxy do not support persistent connections. As far as I know, the reverse ajax in jetty is depending on continuation (I guess it is persistent connection). So how to let jetty support reverse ajax, while coexist with apache server? Thanks.
