• How to get Facebook-Feeds in Trillian without connecting to Facebook-Chat?

  I installed the trial of Trillian 5.0 Build 22 (I don't know if the version 4 Astra is any different). I successfully added my Facebook account so I can see my facebook news on Trillian and works great. The problem is that I don't want to use the Facebook-chat, and if I disconnect the Facebook-chat the rest of the facebook stuff (news, events, groups, request) also disappears. I tried by setting the Facebook status to Away; and I'm not sure if someone can chat with me if I choose that; but anyway I still have the contacts list full of people I don't want. EDIT: Maybe I wasn't clear enough about the Facebook part. And that might be why some people fell this is off-topic. But when I talk about Facebook in this question, I'm not referring to the Facebook site at any point. I'm mean the Facebook plugin of Trillian (and it's not an user plugin; it's a built-in plugin).

• Late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard EFI 1.8 downgrade

  Question: Does anyone know of an EFI downgrade for user on 1.8? I have found a 1.7 to 1.6 downgrade, but once on 1.8 this downgrade no longer works. Background: After upgrading to Snow Leopard, and installing the EFI 1.8 update (as recommended by Software Update), I have lost the ability to burn discs. This also includes when using external burners and when booting into Vista using Bootcamp. Other seemingly related problems to the EFI I have are, chronic overheating, random temporary beachball lockups, longer boot times. These 'other' problems have been solved for other users who experienced these problems on EFI 1.7, but were able to rollback to 1.6. I am looking for a solution that does not require sending my computer back to Apple.

• Apple Magic Mouse scrolling in Ubuntu 9.10

  Just received new Apple Magic Mouse and tried to install it on my computer with Ubuntu 9.10. Mouse was found as Bluetooth mouse, I entered PIN as 0000 (could not find it in user manual, so just googgled it). Now I have 2 buttons working well - left and right, but scrolling does not work. I understand that there is no driver for Magic Mouse for linux, but maybe some enthusiasts already found way to enable scrolling. Without scrolling with only 2 buttons this mouse is just like my first mouse I bought in 1997, Mitsumi as I can remember =)

• OpenVPN on Ubuntu 11.10 - unable to redirect default gateway

  I'm trying to connect to connect to OpenVPN server from my Ubuntu 11.10 machine. I use the following command to do it (under root user): openvpn --config /home/vladimir/client.ovpn Everything seems to be OK, it connects normally without any warnings and errors, but when I try to browse the internet I see that I still use my own IP address, so VPN connection doesn't work. When I run openvpn command, it displays the following message among others: NOTE: unable to redirect default gateway -- Cannot read current default gateway from system I think it's the cause of this problem, but unfortunately I don't know how to fix it.   So I am a small mac-user cog in a larger windows-based network machine. The network here works fine for most everyone else (on PCs), but I have random timeouts and issues with the Wifi. Luckily, I have identified a few problem access points by MAC address (via their log messages in Console.app). Is it possible to tell my Airport on my Macbook to avoid those access points, and only speak with the access points who are far less touchy about me drinking the Apple kool-aid? All of the points are on the same network SSID.

• How can I have my Windows keymap on Mac?

  On Mac, to get a "{" for example, you have to press OPTION key plus 8 to get a curly brace. But on Windows it is ALT-GR plus 7. Another example: On Windows I can press CTRL and Backspace to remove one whole word. On Mac it is OPTION + Backspace. Is there a way I can remap these Mac-driven behavior to be more Windows-like? Because this is, as a very long Windows user, a big burden on me to have such a different keyboard layout. Edit: I'm using a german keyboard layout.

  Hi, A friend has managed to set up their new Windows 7 Home Premium Dell Inspiron and forgot the password they have used. I have tried the following password reset software to no avail: UBCD OHPCrack Offline NT Password & Registry Editor *Trinity Kon Boot I have also tried to do a system restore but this asks for the password. The user does not have any data they need to save. Is there anyway I can get access to the restore partition using Linux to create a recovery disk or do I have to purchase a recovery disk from Dell? • Dvorak hotkey remapping in vim, worth it?

  I've been trying to learn the dvorak keyboard layout of late and I have been making some good progress this time around. The trouble I am finding now is that all of my hotkeys are all in the wrong places. As a vim user this is particularly troubling. I have found good resources to switch the bindings back so that they are in the places in vim, but I wonder if this is worth it. I also use set -o vi in my ~/.zshrc file so that I can use the familiar bindings in the terminal as well. hjkl navigation is also featured in a number of other applications such as less. For those of you out there who have successfully made the switch, is it worth remapping things to be familiar again, or is it better in the long run to just deal with weirdly placed hotkeys?

  I get a GPF dialog box out of the blue fairly often (like about 2 hours after I turn on the computer). It basically says that svchost.exe had a failure... (see the corresponding Event Log entry below). Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 5/18/2010 Time: 7:41:16 PM User: N/A Computer: DKHA-IPSA Description: Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0004eaa9. Shortly after this error pops up, the computer pretty much grinds to a halt (e.g. some UI elements on the desktop simply do not respond). And I have to do a hard reboot. How do I troubleshoot this type of thing? P.S. The PC has all the latest patches and nothing is missing in the Device Manager.

• Could I use directory junctions (symbolic link) to share music between 2 users in Windows 7

I tried making both the My Music folders point to the same folder, but that didn't work. One itunes would not store its library info in that folder. I was wondering if I could create a junction directory so that I can have both My Music folders redirect to a common library folder. I've only read about directory junctions , I havn't tried them.

  I've had Ubuntu for a year now, like it but it doesn't match my needed configuration for my old laptop. So... I am using Linux mainly for webapps so I don't care much about user interface. What I need is a distro which is small enough to install on a SD memory card (or USB) since I am removing the hard drive, all my data is in the cloud. I also want it to have as short boot time as possible. I tried Puppy Linux and it seems ok but it had preinstalled looots af small apps I don't need, I would really like to have a distro with minimal preinstallations and add them on my own. So what are my choices and why would you recommend these?

• Proper application shutdown before windows xp auto shutdown

  I frequently leave the computer on playing a movie or downloading a file while I go to bed. I do use the 'shutdown computer when finished' feature of KMPlayer or getright or uTorrent or whatever program I am using. This method effectively shuts down the computer, but the problem is that there are some applications that seem to exit forcefully when doing this kind of shutdown, this being clearly reflected in winamp not saving the current playlist and config, messenger not saving the chat logs, etc. My goal here would be to have automatically close properly all applications when the auto/scheduled program triggers it. I am looking for some Windows shutdown mode/setting that does application closing like the user would do. I am not expecting to auto-click on save dialogs prompts, if this is needed I will do it before leaving the computer on for auto shutdown.

• Disable drop shadows around windows or the menu bar on OS X

  Nocturne has an option for disabling shadows around windows. But it's only available in night mode, and changing the mode (like when opening the application) causes an annoying screen flash animation. There's no way to disable the shadow under the menu bar either. MacThemes Forum / Removing the menubar dropshadow has a link to a .psd for making special desktop backgrounds that cancel out the shadow under the menu bar. But it only works if that area of the desktop picture has a low enough brightness. Some applications that cover the desktop (like DeskShade) also cover the menu bar's shadow. That's not a real solution though. Unsanity's ShadowKiller stopped working in either 10.5 or 10.6. (It does still work on 10.7.2, but the website says "NOT compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Leopard", and I couldn't get it to work on a 10.6 installation.)   I'm a new user to GNU Screen. I've been using Bash for a very long time, and I want to give GNU Screen a try. As you know, GNU Screen uses 'C-a' (Control-A) as as the command character. Trouble is, this interferes with the Line Editing feature in Bash (and GNU Readline), because Control-A in Bash will Move to the start of the line." I know I can set the Command Character to another key sequence, like "^Q" or "``" (Backtick), but I have trouble finding another key sequence which isn't already in use (^Q is used by the terminal, backtick is used when writing shell scripts). It appears that the Command Character may only be one or two characters in length. Can I set the GNU Screen control character to be something like "Control-Shift-A"? (I can't use more then one hyperlink yet, so I cannot link to the Bash documentation)

  In the past I've maintained my address book using the built-in Address Book utility that came with Windows. Once each year, I would import my Address Book (.WAB) file into Outlook 2003/XP. (I don't use Outlook for email.) Then I would use the Mail Merge feature in Word 2003/XP to make and print address labels on standard Avery label sheets to simplify address of my Christmas cards. Since I'm now using Windows 7, and the familiar Address Book utility is no longer available, how can I print my address labels? I have both Windows Address Book (.WAB) and Comma-Separated Values (.CSV) files that contain my address book data. So, I guess I need to know two things: Which program or utility (preferably free) can I use to print my address labels. How do I import my address data into that program? If it helps, I am already a user of Gmail and Google Drive. Thanks.

  I am building a new PC with the intel i7-930 processor. I am wanting to use 12gb of RAM for it (6x2gb sticks). Here is some of the RAM I am looking at G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop 2 of these 3 stick kits. They are rated at 1600 however some of the user reviews on that product say they xcould not get it to run at 1600 and the supplier who makes the RAM made a comment that "I7 doesn't support over DDR3 1066" So I am curious, I do not know much about this, I know the more GB of RAM the better but as for the speeds, I am not sure how much of a difference it makes. So can someone explain to me what the difference in performance may be based on speeds of 1200 vs 1600 ram?

  When I run GTK applications on KDE, they use the QtCurve theme that matches my color and font scheme as configured in the KDE System Settings application. However GTK applications run as superuser use the old default GNOME, regardless of whether I run them with kdesudo, gksudo, or sudo on a terminal. For example, here's gedit run as superuser on top, and under my normal user account on the bottom: Strangely, KDE applications run with kdesudo display the default Oxygen styling but use my settings when run with sudo on a terminal. • Synchronize pasteboard between remote tmux session and local Mac OS pasteboard

  Setup: I use iTerm2 on MacOS to connect to a remote server. The remote server runs tmux, in which I open files and edit in vim sessions. Problem: I can't copy/paste between the remote tmux session and the local iTerm client. I can use iTerm 2's alt/option + mouse selection to select text, but this copies over multiple vim panes/tmux panes - bad. Is there any elegant solution to make selections in tmux panes synchronize between the remote pasteboard and the local (MacOS pasteboard)? I've seen reattach-to-user-namespace, but I'm pretty certain it doesn't do what I want.

  I have a task set up to run whenever the computer is logged onto that deletes all network folders and maps a network drive. Here is what is in the batch file: @echo off net use * /delete /y net use b: \\Server\Share /user:DOMAIN\Username password exit When the computer is restarted or logged off and back on, the task runs fine (according to the scheduled tasks window saying when it ran last) but the mapped drive doesn't show up. I'll open the command prompt and type "net use" and it simply says "There are no entries in the list". If I then right click on the task and run it, it works and the mapped drive shows up. I've checked the log and nothing shows up. I've tried adding a timer in the batch file so it waits 10 seconds (ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 10000nul) thinking that maybe the network wasn't connected, but that didn't work. What else can I try? • Problems to export java home and to find or create .bashrc in Mac OS 10.6

  Hello, I need to install a program for my studies and, this program, need java to run. When I try to perform the installation say that cannot find the JDK; since the JDK is already installed by default in mac, the problem is export the java home. I´ve try a lot and I cant do it! I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too. Thanks for your help
