• What alternatives are there in OS projects for c# similar to Joomla/Mambo/Drupal?

  I'm beginning a project with a client to build a web application and I'm a little stuck on which solution to go with. I've used Joomla for many clients in the past, but this client has specific requests that I KNOW I'm going to have to build myself. The problem I'm facing is that I work full time under the .NET spectrum and while I am a novice developer in PHP, and I've been studying Joomla's plug in architecture for about a month now, I am a lot more comfortable building something in ASP.NET than I am in PHP. My question is, what OS projects are out there that have a similar community following as Joomla/Mambo/Drupal, along with a plug in architecture that is somewhat akin to Joomla as well? I don't really have the time to build out a full blown CMS system in ASP.NET, but if something already exists that can give me X% (25%, 50%, something) of what Joomla has that will at least get me on the right path. Joomla just has too many extensions and too much of a community backing for me to pass it up if there's not something comparable in the ASP.NET realm.

• Why doesn't a LinkButton work with a table as it's content?

  Using ASP.NET 3.5, you can create a LinkButton then define content inside of it. It works fine if I have div tags or any kind of text or anything, but if I use a table the click doesn't actually post back for some reason. This should take you to google (you'll get an error there but it should still go) for instance: <asp:LinkButton ID="lbTest" PostBackUrl="http://www.google.com" runat="server"> <table> <tr> <td>Test</td> <td>col2</td> <td>col3</td> </tr> </table> </asp:LinkButton> I could work around it by building a "table" with divs I guess, but I hate formatting with divs.

• Prevent Jcarousel from resetting to beginning position on page postback?

  I have a nice looking jarousel running from an asp:listview element, with asp:imagebuttons for the images. When clicked, the images in the carousel send the image id to querystring, and the new page is loaded with a larger version of the image and some asp:labels are filled in to describe the image. It looks and works great, except once the page reloads the jcarousel resets to original position, which is confusing to the user. What's the best way to prevent this? I tried using an UpdatePanel but couldn't figure out how to pass the querystring variable with the partial page update. I could pass the variable in a hidden field, but this wouldn't be very SEO friendly.

• Whats the proper way of accessing a database through an assembly?

  Hi, I have a ASP.NET MVC application which is build up as an assembly that queries the database and a asp.net frontend that references this assembly and this assembly abstracts the underlying database. This means that my Assembly contains a app.config file that contains the connectionstring to the database (Linq to Sql data model). How do I go about making this more flexible? Should i make a "initialize()" method somewhere in my assembly which takes the connection string from the asp.net mvc application and then that controls which database to use? or how is this done?

  We've started using the ASP.NET recaptcha control and it works fine. but one of the requirements we have is that all outbound traffic goes over Https. I know that recaptcha supports https, but It's not clear how to configure (or even if it is configurable) when using the ASP.NET plugin option. has anyone got any experience of this? I'll expand a little on what I've found so far.... The Recaptcha package contains 3 public classes RecaptchaControl, RecaptchaValidator and RecaptchaResponse RecaptchaControl is an Asp.NET control, the recaptcha specific methods on there seem to be concerning themes/look and feel. An instance of the Validator has a RemoteIP field (which I presume would represent the verification server), but I can't a way of binding that to the control. RecaptchaResponse seems to more or less represent an enum with possible responses (valid/invalid/failed to connect).

  I am using GridView in asp .net and editing data with edit command field property (as we know after updating the edited row, we automatically update the database), and I want to use transactions (with begin to commit statement - including rollback) to commit this update query in database, after clicking in some button (after some events for example), not automatically to insert or update the edited data from grid directly to the DB...so I want to save them somewhere temporary (even many edited rows - not just one row) and then to confirm the transaction - to update the real tables in database... Any suggestions are welcomed...   Hi, I am migrating a website over to a new server, its in ASP and uses several Access databases, the site and CMS can read, display the data, and even edit and update existing data entries, but when I want to add a new entry, I get an error... • Are you using Virtual Machine as your primary development enviroment?

  Recently I have purchased a notebook that cames with Windows Home Basic (that don't have with ASP.Net/IIS. I thought in upgrade the Windows version to one with ASP.Net/IIS, but I thought in another possibility: I have an Hard Disk Case with a 360Gb HD. I thought in create a virtual machine with Windows Ultimate (installing too ASP.Net, IIS and Visual Studio 2008) in this HD Case, then I can access my "development enviroment" in any computer that I will work on (my desktop machine and my notebook). But I was worried about the performance. I don't have experience working in Virtual Machines (I use it just to quick compatibility tests)... Are you using Virtual Machine as your primary development enviroment? What your finds? ==================== Thanks for your answers! It really did help me! • Urls parameters doesn't encoding correctly!

  I'am using asp.net mvc version 1.0 and I've a problem with some parameter in a url! My url is look like so(http://localhost:2282/Tags/PostList/c#) routes.MapRoute( "TagsRoute", "Tags/PostList/{tag}", new { controller="Tags",Action="PostList",tag = "" } ); In effect the problem is that tag paramter isn't encoding and so simbol # is ignored! I am using an actionlink but maybe with version 1.0 isn't encoding parameter directly! <%=Html.ActionLink(itemtags.Tags.TagName, "PostList","Tags", new { tag = itemtags.Tags.TagName }, new { style = "color:red;" })%> With this actionlink only whitespace are encoding correctly, infact asp.net mvc become asp.net%20mvc and it work fine! But c# isn't encoding :( So I try to use Server.UrlEncode, and in effect it happen some stuff!!! Infact c# became c%2523 but it isn't correct again because hexadecimal of # is %23!   I have a folder in my web server used for the users to upload photos using an ASP page. Is it safe enough to give IUSR write permissions to the folder? Must I secure something else? I'm good in ASP.NET MVC, but I like languages like Python more than C#. I read a lot about Python and Django/Pylons/etc but I didn't find any good examples of highload projects on python. So, the question is: Is Python good for highload project? Is it enough fast? And if it is, are python frameworks like django/pylons/etc good for this? Or asp.net mvc will be better choice?   Our company would like to redirect all calls to html files on our server to a separate page. The html pages are NOT in an asp.net application. In order to do this, I've been writing and IIS Handler in asp.net. 1) Is this possible to add an IIS handler to redirect static content that isn't served by any asp.net engine, i.e. stand alone files on the server? 2) If it is possible, how do I do this? I created an http handler in a class library. In the app.config I added the handler to the and sections. I added the DLL to the GAC, I changed the html mapping to my custom IIS dll and nothing works. Is there a tutorial or explanation from A to B on how to do this? Thanks. E p.s. I'm using IIS 7.5

• MySQL ODBC error "server has gone away"

  Occasionally we're seeing an error from ASP pages: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005' [MySQL][MyODBC 5.00.11][MySQL] 2006 MySQL server has gone away We're handling it the best way we can in ASP but it still crops up. I think it's more to do with the MySQL ODBC driver than the ASP code. We never see this with PHP code we also have running under the same IIS server, however PHP re-connects each time it is ran, whereas I believe the ODBC driver connects once and stays connected. I've checked the settings in the driver but there doesn't seem to be anything I can change to help mitigate the problem. Can anyone explain why this is happening and how to reduce the number of times it happens?

• Retrieve web user's Identity outside of request scope

  I have an ASP.NET app that logs Audit reports using nHibernate's IPreUpdateListener. In order to set the current user in the Listener events, I was using System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent(). This works fine when debugging on my machine, but when I move it to the staging server, I'm getting the ASP.NET process credentials, not the requesting user. In the ASP.NET page, I can use Request.LogonUserIdentity (which works fine since I'm using integrated authentication), but how do I reference this user directly without having to pass it directly to my event? I don't want to have to pass this info through the pipeline because it really doesn't belong in the intermediate events/calls.
