• Intel 1.83 Mac Mini upgraded to 1.5 gig for Snow Leopard

  Even though I've upgraded countless video cards, RAM, harddrives, motherboards in PCs... this will be my first mac mini RAM upgrade. I've watched the classic "putty knife" video. (Absurd method... but I guess it's what I'm stuck with.) I have a 1.83 Intel-based Mac Mini from 2007-2008, with 1 gig of RAM. (Two 512 sticks) Can I install 1 gig + 512 ? (Or do I have to throw away my existing sticks and buy two 1 gig sticks?) This old machine is rarely used... so I want to spend the absolute minimum on this RAM upgrade. We ONLY use it to run xCode... nothing more. But wanted to increase the RAM so we can install Snow Leopard. I have no idea how many pins the memory has. I printed out over FORTY pages of specs about this machine from "About this Mac"... but didn't find what I needed. Does this sound right: DDR2 SDRAM (but no mention of SO-DIMM) 667MHZ (but don't know if I can use faster also) Pin count: Unknown Computer model number: Unknown (But I "think" it's an MB138/A) PC2 RAM (unknown... not mentioned) 5300 (unknown... not mentioned) Mfg date: (unknown... not mentioned) Number of slots: (unknown... not mentioned) Laptop or desktop RAM: (unknown... not mentioned)

• Windows7 - “The specified network password is not correct.” when the password is in fact correct.

  I have a samba server setup for some time now. It is a Hardware NAS - which unfortunately does not provide access to the Samba logs. (the exact model of the NAS is called Addonics NAS Adapter ) I also have a Windows Vista and a Windows XP machine - from both I am able to map \\192.168.0.20\Smd with no errors ( net use l: \\192.168.0.20\Smd works, after asking for my username and password). I also bought a brand new computer, with Windows 7, and when I try to execute the same exact net use command on it - using the exact same username/password pair, I get a "The specified network password is not correct." message. I also tried mapping from the Windows explorer menu, and got the same error. I synchronized the clocks of the two machines, tried again... and yet the same error persists. So what is really surprising here is that mapping works from WindowXP and Windows Vista machines, but fails from a Windows7 machine using the exact same command and username/password - Anyone has any idea of what could be causing this or how to solve the problem? • JBoss 5.1.0.GA and huge vfs-nested.tmp

  I noticed this while running a performance test with JMeter. For first half an hour everything was fine and the /server/all/tmp directory size was around 36M. Then suddenly the tmp directory grew up to 6.1G. The space was taken by jar files inside vfs-nested.tmp. I found https://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/JBAS-7126 but adding that config but it made no difference.

  I want to test Ceph (a distributed network storage and file system) on some EC2 hosts which is derived from Amazon Linux AMI (amzn-ami-2011.09.2.x86_64-ebs). The kernel version is 3.2 and btrfs is enabled. But kernel config options related to Ceph (CONFIG_CEPH_FS and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RBD) seems to be disabled. I have to make a new kernel and register it to amazon ? Or, does someone know more easy way ?

• Having trouble using psservice and sc.exe between Windows Server 2008 machines

  I'm trying to control services on one W2k8 machine from another; no domain just a workgroup. The user account I'm logged in as is an administrator on both machines. I've tried both psservice and sc.exe. These work in a Windows Server 2003 environment but it looks like I need to an extra step or two due to the changed security model in 2008. Any ideas as to how grant permission to the Service Control Manager (psservice) or OpenService (sc)? I tried running the DOS window with "Run As Administrator" and it made no difference. With psservice I get the following D:\mydir>psservice \\REMOTESERVER -u "adminid" -p "adminpassword" start "Display Name of Service" PsService v2.22 - Service information and configuration utility Copyright (C) 2001-2008 Mark Russinovich Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com Unable to access Service Control Manager on \\REMOTESERVER: Access is denied.   Hi all, I have a server with Exchange 2007 installed and I want to move over to Exchange 2010, I want to install Exchange 2010 onto a new server, what is the best way of moving all mailboxes and config over to the new Exchange 2010 server? Both would be on the same LAN in the same domain. I've yet to install Exchange 2010 if that makes a difference. Thanks Scott

• SCVMM 2008 R2 problems migrating VM from VS2005 to Hyper-V host

  I have System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 installed, and have a Hyper-V R2 host and a Virtual Server 2005 host. I'm trying to migrate my machines from the VS2005 host to the Hyper-V host, and keep getting the following error... VMM is unable to complete the requested file transfer. The connection to the HTTP server myserver.mydomain.local could not be established. (Unknown error (0x80072efd)) Recommended Action Ensure that the HTTP service and/or the agent on the machine myserver.mydomain.local are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTPS traffic. (Note - migrations between Hyper-V hosts managed by the VMM server work fine - my problem is just going from VS2005-Hyper-V hosts) I have no firewalls turned on on either of the servers, and no firewalls in the middle. I've looked all over for answers to this problem, and am getting nowhere. All the articles I find when searching are talking about either V2V or P2V - and i'm just trying to do a straight migrate VM. I've tried rebooting the boxes, changing the BITS SSL port number, restarting services, triple-checking firewalls, etc. Does anyone have any good suggestions as to how I can resolve this problem?

  I had installed virtualbox 4.2.2 in Windows 7.   VMRC was the client tool used to connect to virtual machines running on Virtual Server. Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2 with the Hyper-V role, i need a way for people to be able to use the virtual machines. Note: not all virtual machines will have network connectivity not all virtual machines will be running Windows some people needing to connect to a virtual machine will be running Windows XP Hyper-V manager, allowing management of the hyper-v server, is less desirable (since it allows management of the hyper-v server (and doesn't work on all operating systems)) What is the Windows Server 2008 R2 equivalent of VMRC; to "vnc" to a virtual server?   This is quite a mistery for me. I usually use passwordless RSA authentication to login into my remote *nix servers with ssh and sftp. Never had any problem until now. • Getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN

  I'm having issues getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN. The server setup consists of a security device (DrayTek V3300) which passes the PPTP authentication to a SBS2003 server running RRAS. The server is the DC and provides DNS and WINS, the single NIC's name server is set to the NIC's IP (192.168...), and DHCP on the DrayTek sets the server IP as the DNS. If I create a new VPN connection in Win7, leaving everything as default apart from the server, username, password and domain, I can: ping everything by IP address resolve IPs with nslookup using their fully-qualified name, as in nslookup fileserver.mydomain.local ping machines by fully-qualified name, as in ping fileserver.mydomain.local However if I try to access a file share: within Explorer, I get "Windows cannot access ..." with "Error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified Error", using net use z: \\fileserver.mydomain.local\share, I get "System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found." If I add the machine name to my HOSTS file I can use the file share, which is my last-ditch workaround, but I have a number of VPN users and would rather a solution that doesn't involve me trying to hand-edit system files on computers half a country away. If I set the WINS server explicitly in the connection's IPv4 settings I don't have to use the FQN to ping the machine, but that doesn't change anything else. EDIT: The PC I'm having the issue on is running Win 7 Home Premium. After more testing I actually have two other PCs that work, one W7HP, one XP Home, and another Vista PC that doesn't work (not tested as much as the others), all four on the same internet connection (behind the same router). All of them were tested with a straight-forward, all defaults, new VPN configuration.

• WS2008 subst in Logon script does not "stick"

  I have a terminal server environment exclusively with Windows Server 2008. My problem is that I need to "map" a drive letter to each users Temp folder. This is due to a legacy app that requries a separate Temp folder for each user but which does not understand %temp%. So, just add "subst t: %temp%" to the logon script, right? The problem is that, even though the command runs, the subst doesn't "stick" and the user doesn't get a T: drive. Here is what I have tried; The simplest version: 'Mapping a temp drive Set WinShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") WinShell.Run "subst T: %temp%", 2, True That didn't work, so tried this for more debug information: 'Mapping a temp drive Set WinShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set procEnv = WinShell.Environment("Process") wscript.echo(procEnv("TEMP")) tempDir = procEnv("TEMP") WinShell.Run "subst T: " & tempDir, 3, True This shows me the correct temp path when the user logs in - but still no T: Drive. Decided to resort to brute force and put this in my login script: 'Mapping a temp drive Set WinShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") WinShell.Run "\\domain\sysvol\esl.hosted\scripts\tempdir.cmd", 3, True where \domain\sysvol\esl.hosted\scripts\tempdir.cmd has this content: echo on subst t: %temp% pause When I log in with the above then the command window opens up and I can see the subst command being executed correctly, with the correct path. But still no T: drive. I have tried running all of the above scripts outside of a login script and they always work perfectly - this problem only occurs when doing it from inside a login script. I found a passing reference on an MSFN forum about a similar problem when the user is already logged on to another machine - but I have this problem even without being logged on to another machine. Any suggestion on how to overcome this will be much appreciated.

• How to find virtualization performance bottlenecks?

  We have recently started moving our C++ build server(s) from real machines into VMs. (MS Hyper-V) We have some performance issues that I've currently no idea how to address. We have: Test-Box - this is a piece of desktop workstation hardware my co-worker used to set up the VM before we moved it to the actual server hardware Srv-Box - this is the server hardware Test-Box-Real - This is Windows running directly on the Test-Box HW Test-Box-VM - This is Windows in a Hyper-V VM on the Test-Box HW Srv-Box-Real- This is Server2008R2 running on the Srv-Box HW. Srv-Box-VM- This is Windows running in a Hyper-V VM on the Srv-Box HW, i.e. on Srv-Box-Real. Now, the problem is that we compared Build times between Test-Box-Real and Test-Box-VM and they were basically equal (within about 2%). Then we moved the VM to the Srv-Box machine and what we saw there is that we have a significant performance degradation between Srv-Box-Real and Srv-Box-VM, that is, where we saw no differences on the Test HW we now do see major differences in performance on the actual Server HW. (Builds about ~~ 50% slower inside the VM.) I should add that both the Test-Box and the Srv-Box are only running this one single VM and doing nothing else. I should also note that the "Real" OS is Win2008R2(64bit) and the VM hosted OS is Wind2003R2(32bit). • Lion built-in VPN client times out connecting to Windows 2003 PPTP server

  I have a new iMac with OS X 10.7 (Lion) on it that refuses to connect to a PPTP-based VPN server (running Windows 2003 SBS). To shortcut past a lot of questions: There is a Dell workstation running Windows 7 on the same LAN as the Mac that is able to establish a PPTP connection to the same VPN server using the same credentials. That would seem to rule out any possible problems with the server, the port forwards on the server's firewall, the internet connection between the two, and the router local to the Dell and iMac. I've tried completely deleting the entire VPN "connection" from the Network prefpane and recreating it from scratch. I am certain the connection details are correct because they exactly match what successfully connects from the Win7 machine sitting next to the iMac. Any suggestions?

• Mouse wheel in VirtualPC (mostly) does not work on 64-bit Windows 7 RC

  I have recently upgraded my laptop from WinXP Pro (32-bit) to Windows 7 RC (64-bit). I have a number of VirtualPC 2007 images that I use for testing on various platforms and looking at beta software. I have installed the 64-bit version of VirtualPC. The images all work with the exception of the mouse wheel within the virtual machine. I have tried this out with WinXP Pro, Windows 7 RC, and Windows Server 2008 images. All are 32-bit and all exhibit the same behavior: a gentle rotation of the wheel does nothing; a quick rotation of the wheel sometimes gets a scroll and sometimes not. I regard this behavior as unusable as I tend to use the mouse wheel a lot. All of this worked just fine on WinXP. I have re-installed the Virtual machine additions on all of the machines. The Windows 7 RC virtual image was created after the upgrade to Windows 7 and the 64-bit version of VirtualPC (just to isolate the possibility that I had corrupted the images during the transition). I have googled, binged, and yahoo-ed. There are scattered mentions of this problem (dating back to VPC 2004) but no solutions. I am aware that I could start up one of these images and then use remote desktop connections to get access to that image. I, in fact, do just that for some development that I am doing; the mouse works just fine. This is acceptable in this case because I spend hours at a time in the development VM. These test environments are different in that I will bring up an image for just a short time: minutes rather than hours. Adding the rdc step is much more significant in these cases. Does anyone have any idea of what to do next?

• Problem posting multipart form data using Apache with mod_proxy to a mongrel instance

  I am attempting to simulate my site's production environment as closely as I can on my local machine. This is a rails site that uses Apache w/ mod_proxy to forward requests to a mongrel cluster. On my Mac OSX Leopard machine, I have the default install of apache running and have configured a vhost to use mod_proxy to to forward requests to a local running mongrel instance on port 3000. <Proxy balancer://mongrel_cluster-development> BalancerMember http://127.0.0.1:3000 </Proxy> For the most part, this is working fine. I can browse my development site using the ServerName of the vhost I configured and can confirm that requests are being properly forwarded to the mongrel instance. However, there is a page on the site that has a multipart form that is used to upload an image to the server. When I post this form, there is a delay of about 5 minutes and the browser ultimately returns a Bad Request Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand. In the error log for my vhost: [Tue Sep 22 09:47:57 2009] [error] (70007)The timeout specified has expired: proxy: prefetch request body failed to 127.0.0.1:3000 (127.0.0.1) from ::1 () This same form works fine if I browse directly to the mongrel instance (http://127.0.0.1:3000). Anybody have any idea what the problem might be and how to fix it? If there is any important information that I neglected to include, post a comment, and I can add to this question. Note: Upon further investigation, this appears to be a problem specific to Safari. The form works fine in Firefox.
