• Networking 2 Virtual PC with one VPC as DHCP server

  My host OS is Win XP Professional. The host has a real network connection via DSL and I created a second network connection using Microsoft Loopback Adapter. Internet connection sharing is enabled. The Microsoft Loopback adapter has a IP address of 192.168.0.1. I have 1 Virtual PC which has Windows Server 2003. I have setup the network connection on this VPC to use Microsoft Loopback Adapter. I setup this VPC to be the Domain Controller , DNS Server and DHCP Server. I set this to a static IP address 192.168.0.2 (on the same subnet as the MS Loopback adapter) I have a second Virtual PC which also has Windows Server 2003. The network connection on this VPC is set to "Local Only". I want this VPC to get its IP address from the 1st VPC on which I setup as a DHCP server. What i want is the 2 VPC should be in a network with one of the VPC acting as the domain controller, DNS Server and DHCP server. The second VPC shoud get its IP address from the 1st VPC. It should be a part of the domain of the 1st VPC. When i tried to make the second VPC get the IP address from the first VPC I am not succeeding. Can somebody post some suggestions on how to go about this ?

  I have tried disabling firing wall and checked sqlbrowser is started but for some reason I cannnot connect to my datbase... called server_name\sqlexpress.. I have a virtual machine and a full scale MS SQL Server 2008 R2 running on it... and I have several other vm running sqlexpress. they run fine and I can connect to them using sqlexpress... but when i try to access from sqlserver... I get this error. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) Digging deep into the error, I found this Error Number: -1 Severity: 20 State: 0 and finally this... • Setup Entourage for Exchange via HTTP communication

  Our ISP set up a hosted exchange server for all our mail. I've setup all our Outlook users with no problems. We have two people using Mac OSX Leopard and Entourage. Entourage has the option of adding an Exchange account, but I have no idea how to tell it to connect to exchange via HTTP. Heres an excerpt from the client setup docs the hosting company sent me for Outlook: 1 .Go to control panel 2. Select ‘Mail’ 3. Select ‘Email accounts’ Under the E-mail tab select ‘New’ Select ‘Manually configure server settings......’ - click next Select ‘Microsoft Exchange’ – click next Complete details as below with Microsoft Exchange Server as: [server address] Do not select ‘Check Name’. Instead select ‘More Settings’. Go to the Connection tab, and select the bottom option ‘Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP’. And then select the ‘Exchange Proxy Settings’ button. Enter Proxy server for Exchange Check Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate, Enter msstd:[servername] Proxy Authentication - select Basic Authentication Select OK, and again, so that you return to the main screen. Now select ‘Check Name’. Enter Username and Password: The username should now be the full name and underlined. If so select next, and then finish.   We're running a PHP 5.4 application on Server 2008 R2. We would like to connect to a SQL Server 2008 database, on a separate server, using Windows authentication (must be Windows authentication--the DB admins won't let us connect any other way). I have downloaded the SQL Server drivers for PHP and installed them. IIS is configured for Windows authentication, and anonymous authentication has been disabled. $_SERVER['AUTH_USER'] reports our currently logged on Windows account. In php.ini, we have set fastcgi.impersonate = 1. • Error 0x80073cf9 when installing or updating apps from windows store

  On my Windows 8 desktop I keep getting error 0x80073cf9 when I try to install or update an app from the windows store. In the installings apps pane it just says "This app wasn't installed -- view details" and when I select that it says "Something happened and this app couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0x80073cf9" I am using the built-in windows firewall and antivirus. And my laptop is able to install updates when it is on the same network. • Windows 7 Explorer keeps crashing

  I currently have an issue with Windows Explorer. It keeps crashing when I browse through a network drive. This is happening on several computers. • In general, do 3rd-party laptop AC adapters / chargers work reliably?

  The AC adapters for my 2 dell laptops wore out very quickly. One supplies power but won't charge the battery (it's about 3 years old, the other is a bit newer). Both have worn through to the shielding around the notebook connector and look like they'll be unusable soon. Checking user reviews of the replacement adapter on Dell's own website, it appears they usually fail this fast. Apparently Dell does this deliberately to make money (their adapters sell for about 10-15 times what they cost to make). Same with replacement batteries. I can see there are plenty of much cheaper ($50 less) compatible AC adapters on eBay. Does anyone have experience with these? Naturally I'm nervous a crappy knock-off could fry my notebook, but has this ever actually happened to anyone recently? Has anyone had a good experience? Can anyone recommend a good online seller (who doesn't charge nonsensical shipping costs to Australia, preferably?)

• SharePoint, Exchange and Incoming Emails Without Directory Management Services

  Trying to keep this as simple as possible. We've already created the email accounts that we need (e.g. account[1-20]@domain.com) on Exchange/AD. We'd like to now enable incoming emails on SharePoint 2007 lists corresponding to these accounts. My thinking is we don’t need to configure Directory Management Services [2] – the architecture will be simpler without it and the application doesn’t require these services. However, we still need to route messages from Exchange to either local SMTP services (via the connector described in the articles below) or by user-specific drop-folder settings (if permitted by Exchange). So the question is: can we instruct Exchange to use a drop folder just for accounts account[1-20]@domain.com? or do we need to change the accounts to account[1-20]@sharepointsmtp.domain.com and re-route those message to the local SMTP service that will drop them on disk? • WinHttpCertCfg not importing certificate

  I need to setup a deployment script that imports an SSL certificate that my service uses. I have tried importing with WinHttpCertCfg and with CertMgr to no avail. Here are the command-line arguments I have tried to use with both: winhttpcertcfg.exe -i <certname>.pfx -c LOCAL_MACHINE\My -p <password> -a <user service runs as> and CertMgr.exe -add -all -s -r localMachine -c <cert name> My It seems from what I have investigated that CertMgr does not allow you to import certificates with a password, so I'd rather get winhttpcertcfg working. When I run them I get the following output: WinHttpCertCfg: Microsoft (R) WinHTTP Certificate Configuration Tool Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation 2001. CertMgr: CertMgr Succeeded However, when I look into the local machine certificates in MMC, try to load them from my service, or list it out through winhttpcertcfg, or even looking at the registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\MY\Certificates it is not found. I have tried all of the following: If I install the cert manually (Through CertMgr.msc dialogs) it works. The user installing is running as administrator The user installing has full access on the certificate The tools print out an error when something is wrong (wrong password) Tried it in multiple machines (All of them server 2008 R2) At this point I am officially out of ideas. • Can a power failure or forceful shutdown damage hardware?

  Can computer hardware suffer damage from forceful shutdowns (holding the power button for five (5) seconds) or power failures? I believe that normal PC hardware does not suffer from this - after all, it's not much different than what they experience under a standard shutdown. But elsewhere I've read tht another person thought that it could do physical harm to the hard drive and possibly other components as well. He also said that the journaling features of filesystems are useless in face of power failures and were intended to help mitigate damage from system crashes. I think this is nonsense, but then again I lack the experience and knowledge to say it with certainty.

• CPU Affinity on ARM processors

  I am using some RaspberryPI boards for a data acquisition system. They are nice boards, with plenty of community support around them, but they are really slow. I am thinking of gradually replacing them with ODROID multicore boards, with the Samsung Exynos processors. I have some experience using taskset to set CPU affinity on my servers because I am always running Node.js applications that are by definition single threaded. Now, is it possible to do this on an ARM board? I do not see why it would not in theory, but I have doubts over how well it is going to work. Does anyone have experience with this kind of hack? Also, I would appreciate any comments about ARM CPUs and how they differ from x86.

• Certificates required for WHQL-certified drivers

  The 64-bit Windows 7 image that we deploy to machines at our site does not contain all of the certificates included on a default Windows image. Automatic root certificate installation is also disabled per policy from higher in the organization. We have had a lot of trouble installing many WHQL-certified drivers from reputable companies (ex. HP, Lexmark, Dell, etc.), and I hypothesize that a required certificate is missing from one of the certificate stores on the machine. The error we typically get is: The driver cannot be installed because it is either not digitally signed or not signed in the appropriate manner. I know that it is signed.   Is there a way to know the source and legitimacy of the tasks in the task scheduler in windows server 2008 and 2003? Can I check if the task was added by Microsoft (ie: from sccm) or by a 3rd party application? For each task in the task scheduler, I want to verify that the task has not been created by a third party application. I only want to allow standards Microsoft Tasks and disable all other non-standards tasks. I have created a PowerShell script that goes through all the xml files in the C:\Windows\System32\Tasks directory and I was able to read all the xml task files successfully but I am stuck on how to validate the tasks. • How to set up a file server in a restricted corporate environment

  I work in a big corporation, and the disk space my team gets in the corporate file server is so low, I am considering turning my work PC into a file server. I ask this community for links to tutorials, software suggestions, and advice in general about how to set it up. My machine is an Intel Core2Duo E7500 @ 3GHz, 3 GB of RAM, Running Windows XP Service Pack 3. Upgrading, formatting or installing another OS is out of the question. But I do have Administrator priviledges on the PC, and I can install programs (at least for now). A lot of security software I don't even know about is and must remain installed. But I only need communication whithin the corporate network, which is not restricted. People have usernames (logins) on the corporate network, and I need to use them to restrict access. Simply put, I have a list of logins of team members, and only people in the list should access the files. I have about 150 GB of free disk space. I'm thinking of allocating 100 GB to the team's shared files. I plan monthly backups on machines of co-workers, same configuration. But automation of backups is a nice, unnecessary feature: it's totally acceptable for me to manually copy the contents to a different machine once a month. Uptime is important, as everyone would use these files in their daily work. I have experience as a python and C programmer, but no experience whatsoever as a sysadmin, and almost nothing of my programming experience is network programming. I'm a complete beginner in this. Thanks in advance for any help. EDIT I honestly appreciate all the warnings, I really do, but what I plan to make available is mostly stuff that now is solely on DVDs just for space reasons. It's 'daily work' to read them, but 'daily work write' files will remain on the corporate server. As for the importance of uptime, I think I overstated it: a few outages are OK, it's already an improvement over getting the DVDs. As for policy, my manager is kind of on my side, I will confirm that before making my move. As for getting more space through the proper channels, well, that was Plan A, and it's still on the table... But I don't have much hope. I'm not as "core businees" as I'd like.

• Printer spooler service stop running when sent print job

  Every time i am sending a print job to the printer, i am don't get any response from the printer, and at the printer job list at the status of the job, i see that there was an Error, but it don't give me any clue on what could be the problem. After some investigation i found that every time that i send the print job to the printer the printer spooler service stops to run, then after a second or two it start again (i think that this behavior is related to the printer spooler settings to rerun it self after it stops). Things that i have tried so far: Remove and Install again the Driver. After removing the driver, i have removed the unnecessary registry keys according to this article from Microsoft, these are: Rename all files and folders in: c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 Remove anything but Drivers Print and Processors: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Windows NT x86 Remove anything in here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors but: BJ Language Monitor Local Port Microsoft Document Imaging Writer Monitor Microsoft Shared Fax Monitor Standard TCP/IP Port USB Monitor WSD Port Disconnect and Reconnect the Printer. Clean the computer from Viruses & Spywares. Currently i am stuck, i have no more things to try, if anybody know about any kind of solution please let me know about it. Since i am want to keep this post as general problem that relate to the printer spooler, and not just my particular problem, i didn't included inside the windows version & the printer model, they are (although i think that it isn't relate just for that particular model): Windows 7 32bit, HP Officejet 4500 G510g-m (connect to the computer via USB). • View scheduled recordings remotely

  I have one computer which is equipped with a TV tuner card. The Recorded TV folder is shared so that other computers on the network can watch recordings. Now that I am upgrading my computers to Windows 7, they have Media Center, which makes for a nicer viewing experience than a Windows Explorer folder view. I have set up Media Center on my laptop to considering the Recorded TV folder on the tuner-equipped PC as an extended library location, so now I can view all the recordings from within Media Center on the laptop. • PowerPoint 2007 slides are only partially converted to PDF since SP3

  EDIT: Microsoft support has confirmed that it's a bug with PowerPoint 2007 SP3. I have recently encountered a problem with the "Save as PDF/XPS" add-in for PowerPoint 2007. When I use "Save as PDF/XPS" to create a PDF version of my presentation, some slides are only partially included in the resulting PDF file. For example, this: (download the PPTX file here) is reduced to this (in Adobe Reader X or Acrobat Pro X (both 10.1.1)): (download the PDF file here) So far, I have only encountered this with slides that contain animation elements, but which part of the elements remain in the PDF version appears not to have anything to do with the order in which the animated elements appear, so that might just be a coincidence. Update: The problem persists even if I "un-animate" the slides (removing the animation but leaving the previously animated elements intact). When viewing the affected slides in Acrobat Reader, it sometimes complains about the file containing invalid elements, and that I should complain to whoever generated the PDF file... Update 2: I have just installed Office 2007 on a new Windows 7 x64 PC. With the original Office version (12.0.4518.1014 MSO 12.0.6562.5003), a correct PDF file is generated. After installation of SP3 (12.0.6606.1000 SP3 MSO 12.0.6607.1000) a corrupt PDF file is generated. Today's Microsoft Updates (to PowerPoint version 12.0.6654.5000) haven't changed anything, by the way. Update 3: I have opened a tech support incident with Microsoft. They have confirmed the "limitation", as they called it, and it is indeed limited to 2007 SP 3 only. They are going to pass it on to the developers but they can't say when or even if a fix would be forthcoming, so I guess I'll upgrade to 2010...

• VPN is working, except for DNS lookups. Firewall (Cisco ASA 5505) issue?

  I've got the following set up: LAN -> DHCP / DNS / VPN server (OSX 10.6) -> Cisco ASA 5505 -> WAN Connecting to the LAN via VPN works fine. I get all the details properly and I can ping any host on the internal network using their IP. However, I can't do any host lookups whatsoever. I've looked through the logs on and found this nugget in the firewall log: 3 Sep 08 2010 10:46:40 305006 10.0.0.197 65371 portmap translation creation failed for udp src inside:myhostname.local/53 dst inside:10.0.0.197/65371 Port 53 is dns services, no? Because of that log entry, I'm thinking that the issue is with the firewall, not the server. Any ideas? Please keep in mind that I have very little knowledge and experience with this kind of firewall and the little experience I do have is with the ASDM GUI console, not the CLI console.

• DPM server 2010 Attach agent error : administrator privileges missing?

  I’m hoping you would be able to help me out with this little problem I’m having. I installed DPM 2010 in our test environment to test backups on Exchange 2010 servers. The environment includes : 1xDC 2x Exchange Server 2010 1x DPM 2010 server All of these are running on Microsoft server 2008 R2 Virtual machines. The host machines are using Hyper-v. So the problem goes like this : 1- I tried to install the agents from the DPM server GUI, which failed saying I didn’t have the correct permissions. 2- So then I tried the manual installation using the commands from : the Microsoft site http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb870935.aspx 3- The agent installation worked but when I get to attaching the agents to the DPM server it still gives me the error saying that the specified account does not have administrator rights. 4- I tried the Domain admin, users who are domain admin + local admin, single local admins. 5- I have turned off the windows firewall and made sure all the services are running. So now I’m out of ideas and really need help, the agent attach to the DPM server is the last thing that is holding me back from deploying everything to the production site. Any help would be really appreciated.

• SQL Server 2005 to 2008 DB attach elp please!

  I have SQL Server 2005 Standard on my personal machine. I created a very big DB about 21 gb. I made a backup and transferred the .bak file via an ftp program to my dedicated server. I have SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition on my dedicated server. I tried restore the transferred .bak file but got an error. I posted the error on here and was told the database is corrupt. How? I don't know. The connection was not interrupted during the ftp transfer. The DB works on my own machine. So then I detached the db on my own machine and transferred the mdf and ldf file to my dedicated server through ftp again and again there were not interruptions. Now I try to attach the db and get this error: The header for file 'DB.mdf' is not a valid database file header. The FILE SIZE property is incorrect. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5172) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=10.00.1442&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=5172&LinkId=20476 I already wasted 21 gb transferring the .bak file. Now I used another 21 to transfer mdf and additional ldf file. Please tell me there's a solution. The db can detach and attach fine on my machine in sql server 2005 but not SQL server 2008 on my server.

• Virtual Private Hosting DNS configuration

  I did a great deal of reading here before posting this because I didn't want to post a duplicate - but I'm on a bit of a deadline and getting frustrated, so here goes... I very, very, very sincerely apologize if this is long winded or hard to read. Please - please just ask for any information or clarification and I will give it as quickly as I possibly can. This has become very frustrating to me and this is the last place I know to turn. I have no experience with setting up DNS, no experience with nameservers, and no peers to go to for help. So this is kind of my last ditch effort. The task of setting up a private server has, through circumstances beyond my control, fallen into my lap. I own a domain (hereafter referred to as yyy.com) and have always used shared hosting - I buy a package and just point it to the domain nameservers they give me. It's always been simple. yyy.com is registered with network solutions Now I have purchased a Virtual Private Hosting package from GoDaddy.com - and it comes with Plesk 11. I have no earthly idea how to begin to get the right nameserver for yyy.com. I have gone through the instructions and have wound up exceedingly frustrated. I have 2 IP addresses from GoDaddy for the server. This is what I have so far, and I cannot tell if it is working (Since propogation takes so long, it is extremely hard to test for me) IP 1 : XX.XX.XX.XX IP 2 : YY.YY.YY.YY (obviously hidden for privacy) Now after going through the documentation setup and waiting a few days, this is the setup I have - and so far it does not appear to be working. • How to remove Media Center from Windows 8

  I bought 2 Windows 8 upgrades, 1 for my PC and 1 for my notebook. I added Windows Media Center to my notebook using the free offer in November (side note: the key was emailed to me within 5 minutes, I see many people have been complaining that it takes a few days). Today I decided to add WMC to my PC as well, so I went onto the Microsoft website, same like last time, and I received the email within a few minutes. Once I added WMC, entered the key and the computer rebooted, my activation is now broken: This product key is already being used on another PC. Try a different key or buy a new one. After rereading the product key email, I realised that the WMC key was exactly the same as the one I had received in November for my notebook (I used the same email, i.e. my Microsoft account Outlook email, for both). I didn't think this would be a problem, as on Microsoft's feature pack page it states: ...is limited to five licenses per customer per promotion. So then I decided, I'll just remove WMC from my PC and go back to Windows 8 Pro. So I turned off the WMC feature, PC restarted, activation still broken because my key has been replaced. I then tried to activate it with my original Pro key. The error it gave was that this key cannot be used with this version of Windows, as it is now Windows 8 Pro with Media Center and not Windows 8 Pro anymore. I've searched a bit and it seems the only way to remove it is do a clean install. I tried the Windows 8 Downgrade Helper, which told me I was already running Win 8 Pro when I tried to downgrade, and that I was running Win 8 Pro with Media center when I tried the other option. To sum up: How do I remove Windows Media Center from Windows 8 Pro without having to do a clean install?
