  Hi all, I wonder if someone could take a minute out of their day to give their two cents on my problem. I would like some suggestions on what would be the best data structure for representing, on disk, a large data set of time series data. The main priority is speed of insertion, with other priorities in decreasing order; speed of retrieval, size on disk, size in memory, speed of removal. I have seen that B+ trees are often used in database because of their fast search times, but how about for fast insertion times? Is a linked list really the way to go?   I've got a view for reports, that looks something like this: SELECT a.id, a.value1, a.value2, b.value1, /* (+50 more such columns)*/ FROM a JOIN b ON (b.id = a.b_id) JOIN c ON (c.id = b.c_id) LEFT JOIN d ON (d.id = b.d_id) LEFT JOIN e ON (e.id = d.e_id) /* (+10 more inner/left joins) */ It joins quite a few tables and returns lots of columns, but indexes are in place and performance is fine. Now I want to add another column to the result, showing comma-separated values ordered by value from table y outer joined via intersection table x if a.value3 IS NULL, else take a.value3 To comma-separate the grouped values I use Tom Kyte's stragg, could use COLLECT later. Pseudo-code for the SELECT would look like that: SELECT xx.id, COALESCE( a.value3, stragg( xx.val ) ) value3 FROM ( SELECT x.id, y.val FROM x WHERE x.a_id = a.id JOIN y ON ( y.id = x.y_id ) ORDER BY y.val ASC ) xx GROUP BY xx.id What is the best way to do it? • Compound IDENTITY column in SQL SERVER 2008

  An Orders table has a CustomerId column and an OrderId column. For certain reasons it's important that OrderId is no longer than 2-bytes. There will be several million orders in total, which makes 2-bytes not enough. A customer will have no more than several thousand orders making 2-bytes enough. The obvious solution is to have the (CustomerId, OrderId) be unique rather than (OrderId) itself. The problem is generating the next Customer's OrderId. Preferably, without creating a separate table for each customer (even if it contains only an IDENTITY column), in order to keep the upper layers of the solution simple. Q: how would you generate the next OrderId so that (CustomerId, OrderId) is unique but OrderId itself is allowed to have repetitions? Does Sql Server 2008 have a built in functionality for doing this? For lack of a better term I'm calling it a Compound IDENTITY column.

• How to avoid this very heavy query that slows down the application?

  Hi, We have a web application running in a production enviroment and at some point the client complained about how slow the application got. When we checked what was going on with the application and the database we discover this "precious" query that was being executed by several users at the same time (thus inflicting an extremely high load on the database server): SELECT NULL AS table_cat, o.owner AS table_schem, o.object_name AS table_name, o.object_type AS table_type, NULL AS remarks FROM all_objects o WHERE o.owner LIKE :1 ESCAPE :"SYS_B_0" AND o.object_name LIKE :2 ESCAPE :"SYS_B_1" AND o.object_type IN(:"SYS_B_2", :"SYS_B_3") ORDER BY table_type, table_schem, table_name Our application does not execute this query, I believe it is an Hibernate internal query. I've found little information on why Hibernate does this extremely heavy query, so any help in how to avoid it very much appreciated! The production enviroment information: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 (Tikanga), JDK 1.5, web container OC4J (whitin Oracle Application Server), Oracle Database 10.1.0.4, JDBC Driver for JDK 1.2 and 1.3, Hibernate version 3.2.6.ga, connection pool library C3P0 version 0.9.1. • checkins/recent not returning comments or even counts of comments

  My application has been using the checkins/recent endpoint to show where all the current users friends are currently at and I had included a button the user could press to comment on a checkin. The button used to have the comment count on it until recently. It seems the checkins/recent endpoint no longer returns comments or even a comment count for those checkins. I would have to query each checkin in order to get the comment count which adds to the data usage not to mention API usage counts. Is there another way to do this that I'm not seeing? Could you please at least put the comment count back? You have the photo information, why not comments? Thanks

I want to perform the inverse: creation of a string from an integer. i.e. I want some function int2base(num,base) such that: int( int2base( X , BASE ) , BASE ) == X the function name/argument order is unimportant For any number X and base BASE that int() will accept. This is an easy function to write -- in fact easier than describing it in this question -- however, I feel like I must be missing something.   Hi. I was just wanting some explanation as to what is going on once you have split your tables out into a back end file, and set an mde out for use. When a user accesses the mde, is the mdb still required to get to the tabes (or in order to make it work)? Let say I put these access apps on a shared drive for folks to use. If I split the be end on to the shared drive, and placed the mde on the shared drive, would I the mdb have to exist for that version mde to work (communicate with the tables)? Or does the mde sort of speak to the mdb which speaks to the tables? Hope this question makes sense. Thanks

The results are returned in chunks to a callback function: int myfunc(const char *data, int (*callback)(char *result, void *userdata), void *userdata); Using ctypes, it's no big deal to call myfunc from Python code, and to have the results being returned to a Python callback function. In order to store away the result chunks, I'd like to do e.g.: def mycb(result, userdata): userdata.append(result) userdata=[] But I have no idea how to cast the Python list to a c_void_p, so that it can be used in the call to myfunc. My current workaround is to implement a linked list as a ctypes structure, which is quite cumbersome.

• Extracting information from PDFs of research papers

  I need a mechanism for extracting bibliographic metadata from PDF documents, to save people entering it by hand or cut-and-pasting it. At the very least, the title and abstract. The list of authors and their affiliations would be good. Extracting out the references would be amazing. Ideally this would be an open source solution. The problem is that not all PDF's encode the text, and many which do fail to preserve the logical order of the text, so just doing pdf2text gives you line 1 of column 1, line 1 of column 2, line 2 of column 1 etc. I know there's a lot of libraries. It's identifying the abstract, title authors etc. on the document that I need to solve. This is never going to be possible every time, but 80% would save a lot of human effort.

But can't use another page or <mx:TextInput /> in this confirmation page, it will be <mx:Label />. After show the confirmation page if clients click on Button then submit the info. Say I have a database looking like this; Product with columns [ProductName] [Price] [Misc] [Etc] Order with columns [OrderID] [ProductName] [Quantity] [Misc] [Etc] ProductName is primary key of Product, of some string type and unique. OrderID is primary key and of some integer type, and ProductName being a foreign key. Say I change the primary key of Product to a new column of integer type ie [ProductID] Would this reduce the database size and optimize lookups joining these two tables (and likewise operations), or are these optimizations performed automatically by (most/general/main) SQL database implementations?

• How to stop worker threads in a multithreaded Windows service on service stop

  I have a Windows service that uses the producer/consumer queue model with multiple worker threads processing tasks off a queue. These tasks can be very long running, in the order of many minutes if not hours, and do not involve loops. My question is about the best way to handle the service stop to gracefully end processing on these worker threads. I have read in another SO question that using thread.Abort() is a sign of bad design, but it seems that the service OnStop() method is only given a limited amount of time to finish before the service is terminated. I can do sufficient clean-up in the catch for ThreadAbortException (there is no danger of inconsistent state) so calling thread.Abort() on the worker threads seems OK to me. Is it? What are the alternatives?

• How can I deploy my .NET app to Amazon EC2?

  I have a .NET Windows service and a .NET Web Application that I would like to deploy to my Amazon EC2 Windows 2008 instances. At this point, all I need to do is to copy the zipped files across to the EC2 box and remote desktop to the EC2 instance and finish the deployment. In order to do this, I have tried LogMeIn Hamachi2 to create a P2P VPN and use RoboCopy to copy the files, however it seems Hamachi doesn't work on Windows EC2. What is your solution for deploying your .NET apps to Windows EC2 instances? I want to avoid running an FTP server on the box just to get my files up on the server and don't have a VPN server (like OpenVPN) running to run a cloud based VPN solution. Perhaps I can find a simple way of using Amazon S3 as a strategy? Any ideas? Suggestions?

  When hitting a button, an error would occur: System.Web.HttpUnhandledException: Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown. --- System.ArgumentException: Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using in configuration or in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation. I then added EnableEventValidation="false" into my @Page directive, which fixed the error. Now after manipulating the listbox, the new values in the listbox are not posted back to the server. How can I solve this?

  Hi all, I'm having a scrollview and a view over it both of which I'm creating through interface builder. But whenever I run the program the scrollview displays the part of the view which is almost at its center. It is scrollable, so when I pull it down, I can see the text in the view above but when I leave it's again positioned the earlier way i.e. somewhat down the actual (0,0) position. Can anybody hint me at the property which should be set in order to fix this?

• Specify which row to return on SQLite Group By

  I'm faced with a bit of a difficult problem. I store all the versions of all documents in a single table. Each document has a unique id, and the version is stored as an integer which is incremented everytime there is a new version. I need a query that will only select the latest version of each document from the database. While using GROUP BY works, it appears that it will break if the versions are not inserted in the database in the order of version (ie. it takes the maximum ROWID which will not always be the latest version). Note, that the latest version of each document will most likely be a different number (ie. document A is at version 3, and document B is at version 6). I'm at my wits end, does anybody know how to do this (select all the documents, but only return a single record for each document_id, and that the record returned should have the highest version number)?

• PHP Include Windows XP Notepad++ Editor - Nav Include Not Working - Nav Disappears

  I am creating a website, and have a tabbed horizontal menu. In order to cut back on the number of files I have to edit when I have to make changes to the menu I want to put the navigation in a separate file that I can call using a PHP include statement. When I do this, however, the nav disappears entirely from the page. The rest of the content remains, and there are no error messages. I have been looking for answers for this for weeks, and have tried every version of the PHP include statement that I could find. None of them worked. This was the last attempt. I have the file "nav.php" in a folder named "includes" in a main dir called "testsite" I use Windows XP, use NotePad++ as my text editor, and have been testing in Firefox. I can't find an answer anywhere - any help would be appreciated. Lorianna

• Passenger: RailsBaseURI case sensitive?

  I used Passenger to deploy a RoR app to a sub URI on my domain. The problem I'm facing is that the sub URI seems to be case sensitive. Navigating to http://mydomain.com/RailsApp resolves fine. However, if I go to http://mydomain.com/railsapp, http://mydomain.com/railsApp, or any other variation, I get a 404 error. How can these requests using different casings get resolved correctly? • Are there any worse sorting algorithms than Bogosort (a.k.a Monkey Sort)?

  My co-workers took me back in time to my University days with a discussion of sorting algorithms this morning. We reminisced about our favorites like StupidSort, and one of us was sure we had seen a sort algorithm that was O(n!). That got me started looking around for the "worst" sorting algorithms I could find. We postulated that a completely random sort would be pretty bad (i.e. randomize the elements - is it in order? no? randomize again), and I looked around and found out that it's apparently called BogoSort, or Monkey Sort, or sometimes just Random Sort. Monkey Sort appears to have a worst case performance of O(∞), a best case performance of O(n), and an average performance of O(n * n!). Are there any named algorithms that have worse average performance than O(n * n!)? Or are just sillier than Monkey Sort in general?
